eighth generation rancher with pearce cattle company joins us from o okeechobee. >> why is it different in florida than for instance in california. >> in florida we have a lot of sandy soils and shallow root zones. the rain needs to be sprinkling on this ground every week. out west, you have a lot deeper root zones and larger particle size in your soil. and it will hold moisture deeper. we're just suffering because we had some frost this year that we don't normally have and then that kills the grass and then you have got prolonged periods of drought where there is no water for surface water drinking or growing grass. we are right in the middle of grazing season where it should be growing right now. >> exactly right. i was talking to a friend down in jupiter florida chip block.
3:44 am
he said we need more rain to fill up the aquifer because the aquifer where people get the water from in florida is very low. now, that's not your concern because you don't actually irrigate as we look at some of this pasture land right there. you need rain on top of that grass to grow the grass so the cattle can graze on it and get bigger, right? >> yes, sir, that's true. and what we're doing, we are right in the middle of breeding season right now. as the cows they have less grass available. we are trying to get these cattle pregnant to where they will have calves nest year. nex. we typically depend on grass for the nutritional value of the cow. we are having to supplement additional whether i liquid feed or cubes on the ground. and, it's increasing our production costs and it will have a long-term effect on our bottom line as we don't get as many of these cows impregnated. >> steve: that's right. i remember from my future
3:45 am
farmers of america's day, underweight cattle have a harder time getting pregnant. that costs you money out of your pocket. >> yes, sir. on today's markets, we will probably be anywhere from 75 to $100 a head in additional molasses or dry feed supplementation. we are going to extend this feeding season for about 90 days, i would think, unless this drought breaks. then it could be prolonged for more. >> steve: okay. one of the things, matt, i know there is a lot of citrus growing down in florida as well. those farmers do use irrigation to keep their trees, their, you know their orange trees and whatnot going, right? >> that's true, yes, sir. that's a strain because diesel is expensive, labor is expensive to irrigate. and there is nothing better than mother nature moisture with the nutrients and everything that it provides to these citrus growers as well.
3:46 am
>> steve: okay. what are you going to do about it? how are we going to get some rain down there to you in florida? >> we're just going to keep -- ranchers are very resilient. we will manage through. this and we do a lot of rotational grazing where we move cattle from pasture to pasture and give the grass a rest. we pray for rain and, like i say, manage through it. >> steve: pray for rain for the folks down in florida. matt, thank you very much. i know you have got your chores to do. thank you for dropping by "fox & friends." >> yes, sir. thank you, steve. appreciate you covering. >> steve: appreciate you telling your story. good luck. coming up, after generations of boy-only births. a michigan family welcomes a baby girl to end a 130-year streak. the clark family joins us live coming up next ♪ you break my heart ♪ and leave me sad ♪ tell me what did i do wrong ♪ to make you stay away so long ♪ baby love ♪ my baby love
