but the fed if you look at their march meeting minutes and her own survey the wall street journal survey of economists suggest those numbers are staying too robust. there was some expectation the rate increases we have seen so far plus some of the banking problems would crimp lending. we see a little bit less economic activity perhaps is unemployment numbers rise a little bit. that is not happening. the expectation is the interest rates are going to continue to inch up. they are probably going to stay higher a little longer than people had expected. >> so, recession or recovery? >> it is interesting, arthel. you are beginning to see a sentiment shift in the fed and in our survey of economists. they have stories on this right now.

the sentiment is you will see unemployment rise, which is what the fed is kind of hoping for. he's to slow the economy. but the unemployment rise 3.5% to around a little north of 4%. an inflation he economists think will drop from about 5% to little north of three and a half. now that is still above what the fed wants to get down to, 2% before it feels there is price stability. the sentiment is it's drifting toward at least a mild recession by the end of this year. inflation is going to stay higher than people wanted to be. unemployment probably rise but still be very low. and you probably will not see rate decreases until sometime in 2020 forward for the consumer means you are borrowing costs are going to stay higher for

cars, homes, things you borrow money for to buy. if i that brings me too this. as you well know our gdp rest manning the pocketbooks of consumers. what they keep spending on those items you just mentioned especially? >> this is a price the fed and economists in general is the american public has stayed fairly robust. consumer spending has drifted down a bit but it is still pretty healthy. what you are seeing is the phenomenon or people had backlogged purchases. they are out there spending, they're out there traveling again which contributes to economic growth. but again, the expectations are the economy is going to slow. these interest rates will increases will have an effect. the imf and the world banking world are also expecting global growth to slow. but still be positive. not a global recession.

that is a bit of a bright spot on the horizon for the u.s. as well as it faces its own balancing act. how much to raise rates to slow the economy, to bring down inflation but not raise rates so much you dip into a hard landing recession. quest lexi or treasury secretary yellen has to say, let's listen. >> i think we probably need some easing of stress in the labor market to get inflation down. i believe a strong labor market and bringing down inflation are compatible goals. and i think we are seeing that play out right now. >> final word jon bussey? >> that is the nice way of saying we do not want to have so much unemployment that we run into political problems in the united states. but the fed needs to raise the unemployment level. it used to be the end of the
