folks who had the misfortune to be anywhere near these flash mob style crimes. correspondent jeff paul has that story this evening. good to see you jeff. >> good to see you jonathan. we will begin with chicago where for three nights in a row hundreds of teenagers flooded the city's streets downtown. this was millennium park on saturday. witnesses describe absolute chaos as a mob-like group of mostly teenagers and younger people stormed the streets smashing car windows and even attacking one driver. the two teens were also hospitalized after being shot. it took hundreds of police officers where the help of swat teams to go eventually get things under control. >> it's bad parenting. our kids should not be out here. where are their parents at? >> mayor elect brandon johnson says he doesn't condone the activity but in a statement adsed, quote, it is not construct f to demonize youth

there were six similar incidents in the los angeles area just like that video you saw there. >> thirty nine hear them saying it's not safe for them to go if to thesekine of situations. >> they're outnumbered. >> thank you, jeff. let's take a deeper dive ina tonight's crime stories with former fbi special agent nichole parker. first of all, you, as an fbi agent, have experience on the causes and effects of violent crime. this kind of violence that we're seeing in so many cities across the united states, what does that do to the psyche of people who live in those cities? >> it's a really important topic right now. i'm a former fbi special agent and where focused on violent crime. we talked about these hearings that took place 9 york city. i'm also a former resident of new york city. i can you that i recently visited new york city and it has changed.

people are saying in these hearings on one side of the fence that there is no increase in crime. those statistics don't show that. i can tell you that residents f new york city do not feel safe in new york. the perception of crime is just as important as the crime itself. if people do not feel safe to leave their homes, that is not okay. it's not good for people to not feel safe where they live. the came needs to be addressed. >> you mentioned the hearing that took place today, some people it scribing it as political theater. republicans who hell that hearing obviously saying it was very necessary and very important. let's just listen to that exchange of ideas. here they are. >> the scales of justice are weighed down by politics. for the district attorney justice isn't blind. it's about looking for opportunities to advance a political agenda. a radical political agenda. >> i want to thank all the witnesses including the victims

of crime. i fear that you are being used for political purpose despite your sincerity. >> nichole, there were real victims of crime there who gave very emotional testimony. any evidence of what zoe lofgren was saying that this is political theater and everybody's playing games with those victims? >> you know, that's highly insulting to these victims of vie lent crime f. i've worked with silent crime victims throughout my fbi career. i always took a victim-centered approach. law enforcement and prosecutors, you are being paid by the taxpayer dollars of the citizens you serve. it is your obligation to protect citizens and protect them from dangerous situations. if they do not feel safe it your job to protect them. lenient policies, you know, the cash reforms, things of that nature, the progressive policies are not good for the cities.

we're seeing it nationwide and there are droves of people leaving these cities and heading to more law enforcement friendly states. it's important that law enforcement is backed up and supported when you are defunding the police that is nut a good thing for your city. we need law enforcement there. we need law and order, we need respect. people need to know if you commit crimes you will be held accountable. there is a consequence and that's very, very important. >> what is the simple answer here? is it just more police officers on the streets, or does it go a lot deeper than that? >> you know, it's not just more law enforcement on the streets. you need leadership and mayors and your elected officials to support law enforcement that allow them to do their jobs. if they're not, you know, being able to enforce the laws it's not that helpful. unfortunately with the disrespect for law enforcement, many people are leaving law enforcement in droves. it's a dangerous job. you're putting your life at risk every
