safety. and then having people suffer as a result. so, i have actually for a long time been a strong advocate of a.i. regulation. >> steve: that's why he is calling for a pause. is he going to launch his own version of it coming up. he announced a couple days ago. it's out there. the worry is and do you remember i'm old enough to remember the movie the stanley cubric 2001 space odyssey where a computer essentially kills a crew because it's in the best interest of humanity to kill the crew. if you saw the movie you know that that was like 40 or 50 years ago. still, it's an important thought. is it possible for technology to wipe out civilization if technical nothing says you know what? man is getting in the way. >> ainsley: he says humans are

sales tax when you buy a dozen at regular price. and those are your headlines, ainsley, i'm going to send it down to you. >> ainsley: good deal. thank you so much, ashley a record 49% of american voters now call themself independents. that is nearly the same as those who identify as either a democrat or republican combined. among those independents, there is an even divide on which way they lean. some more to the right. some more to the left. here with what this means for 2024 is pollster maslansky and partners president lee carter. are you surprised by. this i'm not. this is a trend we have been seeing over time. 49% of americans identify as independence. even young people 49% identify as independents. most of them have problems on one issue or another. mostly republican ents segment not on social issues. mostly democrat but i want to fund the police. i'm not going to align myself with either party and also they're addition allusioned and

disappointed in the party system they don't trust it. >> is it a sign of how far each party has gone. >> i think it has. the other thing that is really interesting as you look at the independent votes for the first time in a number of years, more people are leaning republican than they are democrat. most people for the last several years it's been a 3 point at least minimum advantage towards the democrats. right now republicans have a slight advantage. only 1 point. 45 to 44. still, that's significant. saying to me that people are aligning more with conservative values going more republican but on some issues, specifically when you look at the social issues like abortion and look at gay marriage and some of those other issues. that's where other people are drawing the line i can't go there. >> does this give opportunity for people to come up in the ranks and say i'm going to fund police but maybe six weeks is too early. whatever the social issue is that republicans care about. >> the problem is with the primary system, it's really appealing to those folks who have decided to say i am a republican or i am a democrat because in many states there are still closed primaries.

you will get those more extreme candidates going to come through. does that mean a third party candidate come n the general election? i think it's going to be difficult. even though people are aligning themselves with independents more than they are -- they are not saying i want a third party. they are saying i want the flexibility to go with whoever is right for the moment. i think it would be really hard. they have solid base. the republicans. >> ainsley: it would change the primary fields in many states. in new york you can't vote unless you are a registered republican or a democrat. >> that's right. many states have a closed primary. it's important that people understand that. if you are an independent and you are frustrated getting two extreme candidates go out there and register one side or the other so you can have your voice heard when it comes time of the primary. a lot of people don't realize that. >> ainsley: i wonder how this is going to effect the presidency? is it going to be harder for candidates to win. >> much harder. once you get to the general election, you will see a lot of people are frustrated with the candidates that they have. the problem is a lot of people want someone in the middle a
