to weigh potential misdemeanor and felony charges against hunter biden. no decisions have been made that we know of yet. this is an investigation going on for almost half a decade over a variety issues including his overseas business dealings, his tax affairs, also lying on a federal form to purchase a gun. we reported his attorneys will mete with the attorney running the investigation. it began in 2018. this is a status update requested by hunter's attorneys. the president's son is by no means flying under the radar as a potential indictment looms. i use the word potential. no certainty he will face charges. he has been going with his dad, the commander-in-chief. he was in ireland shaking hands with throngs of excited people a few weeks ago. excited on the streets of ireland. before that he was strolling

democrats reluctant about biden 2024 but see no other choice. is that the consensus, jessica? >> it is certainly the consensus at these papers and a lot of democrats in the media. i'm not sure the average democrat at home is really paying much attention to this. we know joe biden is running for re-election. the video is out and we'll start hearing about it more and the agenda. this was a beltway reaction than the people who need to get up and go to work. >> bill: mr. beltway, okay. nbc news polls. >> 70% of people don't want joe biden to run again. he was supposed to be the bridge. he looked across the bridge, saw kamala standing there saying maybe not. he is at 41, 42% approval. he couldn't ask the question mentioned earlier, are you better off than four years ago? just on inflation alone and how it eroded wages the answer is no.

rich gap will grow by 2050. this is people's mindset. going into a re-election campaign is this where you want to be? >> ideally no, you would hope everyone had amazing numbers and spring is in bloom and we'll get going. the reality is the american public feels this way now but it doesn't mean that they think joe biden is personally responsible. the inflation numbers and it is a global problem. i understand the president a few times said all these countries are so much worse than we are. we do know we're in a global catastrophic inflation problem. same with the energy crisis. i think people are looking at what joe biden has accomplished and i know he didn't narrate as much of it in the video as he could have. he has them signing bill. he has bipartisan gun reform, infrastructure. new supreme court justice up there. rallying for civil rights and leads with january 6th which is a clear shot at donald trump.

had an argument and it may have been over lee's relationship with the suspect's married sister. jonathan hunt live in los angeles with more. hi, jonathan. >> good morning, as we await the court hearing in a couple of hours we are learning more about both the victim, bob lee, and the accused killer. to lead first the tech executive stabbed to death, the san francisco standard is reporting that lee visited a suspected drug dealer's apartment just hours before his death and prosecutors believe that may be connected to the murder. they are investigating the theory that the man accused of killing lee was upset about lee's relationship with his married sister. and believed lee may have been using drugs with his sister in the hours before the killing.

the woman that's seen with her husband with a court appearance for her brother. he was stabbed april 4th and seen in this viindividual stumbling and falling on the sidewalk as he bled to death. an apartment who shared an apartment with the defendant has told police he was violent towards her and prone to sudden mood swings. she called police last august, the defendant was cited then and released on suspicion of misdemeanor battery. the next court hearing in the murder case. it seems unlikely we'll learn a lot more at what is expected to be a very brief appearance in this case in which officials have repeatedly said there is much more than meets the eye. at some point they will tell us really what they are talking about. >> dana: maybe today is the day. jonathan hunt, thank you. >> bill: so miller beer, miller

lowdown on this. why don't you headline your reaction on the re-election. >> well, it's a remarkable day. i think joe biden is the democratic nominee. announcing early and freezing out the field. he has the backing of the left and the entire party. so i think the party is all in on a joe biden re-election. i thought he would maybe wait until july, give -- see how things in the country played out. try to get his job approval up. be less political as a candidate. all the polls show 70%, got him in the race to freeze the field and unify the party. >> dana: it is interesting. if democrats are all in you have the nbc poll that said a vast majority of democrats didn't want him to run again. now that he has announced they'll say this is the guy we have and he might not be our first choice or the best one but we have to go to war with him?

>> exactly. in my own poll only 37% of democrats picked him to be the democratic nominee. but there is no candidate who can run against him. no one in even single digits against him. there is no field. there is no opportunity. there will be no debates. and so he is effectively frozen the field. he runs the party machinery. and as i said since the left seems to be all in, the possibility of a challenge from the left, which is where these challenges typically come from, is remote. so i think he is it. i think it was shrewd politically to decide to get out there. it's unexpected in my view. i thought he would see how he is doing and his job rating in the low 40s. no one has ever gotten reelected with that job rating. you try to be as non-political.

he wanted to secure the election. >> bill: what you describe and what dana points out is what happened in 2020. once he has 49% of the primary vote in south carolina he was sailing and beat bernie sanders in michigan and the game was pretty much over. i look at the nbc poll and what they write. substantial majorities of americans don't want trump or president joe biden to run for president in 2024. what happens, mark, in american politics when you hold an election that no one wants? >> well, you get some very unhappy voters. that's why the action now moves to the republican primary. can donald trump be beaten by ron desantis or tim scott? i think that's the only real capability now to avoid the nation from having a rematch that most voters don't want that could never bring the country together, that would leave the

country visibly divided for another four years rather than having new, fresh candidate that could bring the country together. it is going to be a brutal political season out there. >> dana: you mentioned before -- we've talked about the first two years of the biden presidency was very progressive. he ran saying he would be a moderate, a bridge and he has accomplished some things very far to the left. now he will go into a re-election. a close election, and you were in the clinton times you guys figured out a way to come to the center so he could win re-election. is that something biden needs to do now or are those days far behind us? >> a lot of it will depend upon whether trump is the republican nominee. they figure if trump is the republican nominee it will go maga republicans, anti-trump it will be rerun the playbook from the mid-terms. i don't think you will hear much about issues from anybody if there is a new challenger, i think it will change the dynamic

of the race and maybe require him to move to the center. you saw him take 1 or 2 measures. he vetoed the reform bill, the police reform bill in d.c. you've seen him okay the drilling in alaska. you have seen him take 1 or 2 steps that he could point to as more centrist but you certainly have not seen a wholesale reorienting and you won't see it during the primary season because the left is giving him comfort to be the nominee of a more or less united party even though the polls show so little support for a second term. >> dana: there we go. thank you, mark, great to have you today. >> bill: i think there is more to come. >> dana: a lot more to come. as a reminder fox news is hosting the first republican primary debate of this election cycle. it is scheduled for august in milwaukee and we will see you there. >> bill: an honor for princess
