10:20 am
to the defund the police movement by thinking that social workers could handle what was happening in san francisco streets and when it comes to the business side of it with the pictures you are seeing, the video here, corporations are leaving. whole foods opened a year ago in downtown san francisco, it's a liability to stay to have employees walking through the dangerous areas. so, ultimately you have all the small businesses which have already left, and then corporations leave, the jobs go, the tax base goes, and then you have basically a desert of open air drug dealing, criminality, which becomes a magnet for more of this type of behavior where people come and travel to engage in this kind of activity. so san francisco created this monster and now they are dealing with the consequences. >> john: this is the doom loop we were talking about, and you think about the whole foods store, flagship store trinity place, they say temporarily closed. we see this in san francisco and remember how beautiful the city was at one point. but it happens elsewhere across the country as well. you and i during the break were

talking about your experience at a walgreens in new york city. >> walgreens in times square and we were just there buying basic items around 9:00 at night and these young men walked in, no shirts on, clearly high on drugs, just taking things off the shelves, walking out of the store and then coming back into the store, berating the clerk because they did not give them a bag, the clerk saying -- >> john: didn't give them a bag -- >> and they are making everybody in the store uncomfortable, and berating the cashier, just a person trying to make an honest living by being a cashier at the walgreens, and yet they are the ones being spunsed with this kind of behavior and the policies. so when this happens in cities across the country in san francisco and we mentioned the whole foods thing is a temporary closure, easy to tear things down, difficult to build them back up. and when you see it happen in cities across the country, it will take generations to turn this around if they don't want

to elect people who are willing to put in tough on crime policies and realize the mistakes they made when it came to defunding the police. >> john: my next point, i can't believe the gall to demand a bag for something they are stealing. a target spokesperson said like other retailers organized retail crime is a concern. we are taking proactive measures, mitigation efforts include hiring additional security guards, adding third party guard services at select locations and using new technologies. these cases and tools to protect merchandise from being stolen. this is becoming the new normal across america. it shouldn't be. and where aren't politicians in places like california. gavin newsom has thought about running for president. why aren't they doing this? >> reformers say we want to send social workers which san francisco did and now a crime

10:32 am
working to get that. so do i share concerns, yes. i'm concerned about the fact the autonomous vehicles approved driving around in san francisco that i know are collecting data. on the other hand, we have to build those jobs here. the ford motor company has assured me they are managing that joint venture that no dollar is going to china, this they are going to learn from this. >> sandra: do you think china will play by the rules? >> honestly, i have to count on our government to make sure and these companies to make sure they are playing by the rules. but am i worried about national security implication, i have to tell you that i am and get it to the point we don't need a joint venture with china but that we have the ability to be at the forefront of innovation and technology and american know how and workers j the batteries. >> sandra: it's still a chinese-owned parent company. this company answers to the chinese communist party.
10:33 am
>> so there's two different -- well, ford motor company says they own the land, they own the joint venture, they are doing it. the second company i have not spent as much time with, but it is an american company. but they are in a partnership with the chinese parent -- with the chinese company and let us be clear, if you are a chinese business, the communist government is part of your business. so, it's something that worries me every day and it's a balance that we have to reach. but the fact of the matter is, i want americans building them, i want the jobs here so we have to move as quickly as possible as a country, as -- to support innovation and technology happening here, which is what we did with the chips bill. most people know i worked in the auto industry. when i started in the auto industry we built 40% of the chips in the world. now we are down to 12 or 14%. >> sandra: i think we are getting away from the point here, this would be near a u.s. military base, you are talking about hundreds of acres of land
10:34 am
that this company, that you are saying and touting will have u.s. workers, but it is still owned by a parent company that is chinese-owned, and to suggest that you are just going to believe that they'll play by the rules when they are owned and operated by china, isn't that a risk you are willing to take? >> one, i am not sure who owns that land. if it's the american parent company or the chinese, and i am going to ask that question when we are done here. i have been told that the americans control it. no, i think -- but i do want to see that innovation and technology happen here in the u.s. and these companies are saying that this is what they must do to get the i.p. so, we and our military have to be very observant and very strong protecting our national security. >> sandra: and finish by asking about the president's announcement, so this is almost
10:35 am
