"fox news sunday" what's shaking on sunday for you? >> shannon: we have ronna mcdaniel. folks saying they may or may not show up for the debates. and we have democratic senator chris van hollen to talk about the president's re-election and debt ceiling showdown. >> bill: enjoy the weekend, shannon. good to be with you. thanks for being here today. gillian turner now is in for harris. >> gillian: thank you. fox news alert straight off the bat today. president biden's job approval rating is hitting an all-time low the same week he kicks off his re-election campaign. i'm in for harris today. the voters put his rating in the low 40s. the new poll shows his latest approval at 37%. prior to this week the low was

"the new york times" says this. president biden formally moved from a campaign in waiting to a campaign of waiting. critics say voters, though, do want a change. listen. >> this is a guy who has tried to coerce the country on everything from transgender issues to climate issues to the border. and this is a guy who frankly has run a pretty incompetent administration which is why most americans think america is in decline and most americans think that we need a different approach. >> gillian: rich edson is at 1600 pennsylvania avenue this morning. hi, rich. >> good morning. republicans jumping into the race.

a number of polls show voters are generally uninterested in a 2020 rematch. defendants are defending the president's decision to run again saying he is their best chance to hang onto the white house. >> president biden is for making sure manufacturing comes back to america. president biden is for protecting unions and increasing working wages. the republican plans are for cutting spending, for tax cuts for the wealthy and i think that's what the election will come down to. >> congressman said he thinks biden should agree to debate his democratic shall eners williamson and robert kennedy junior that the staff overprotects him and that he should have more press conferences. another biden run is an opportunity for them to return to the white house say republicans. >> the issues that we're talking about, the border wide open. china an adversary, this administration treats them like allies. the issue of the economy.

>> senator tim scott has an exploratory committee. the vice president if she were to decide or president were to decide to step away. polls are lower for harris in the latest fox news survey. the vice president is at 43% approval. 54% disapproval. that's up from 39% approval in january. now as with most sitting presidents, it is expected that president biden will be renominated by the democratic party. democrats have made it easier this time around demoteing states on the calendar and pushing states on the calendar like iowa and new hampshire in favor of more biden-friendly states like michigan and south carolina. gillian. >> gillian: thank you. take a look at the axios reporting on the president now. they say he faces what they are calling an age trap on the 2024

campaign trail. his schedule so far reveals how his staff tried to insure he is at his best. four public events before 10:00 a.m. a dozen after 6:00. mostly dinners and receptions. 12 full weekends so far without any public events. the white house in response put out a one word reply calling this reporting false. let's bring in marc thiessen. fox news contributor and former speech writer and columnist for the "washington post." marc, a lot to unpack there. a good place to start is we both worked at the white house, seen the job up close and personal. it is a tough, tough job. people in their 20s would struggle to keep up with the commander-in-chief's schedule in any administration. >> yeah. i had a tough time keeping up with president bush. i would be at my desk at 5:45 in

the morning having been there until 7:00 p.m. the night before and he was working the whole time, too. it's a hard job. pictures of president bush. we look at the pictures of the president on the day he took office and compare it to the end of the administration and you see oh my gosh how much gray hair he has and many more wrinkles. look at joe biden two years ago compared to today. you've seen similar aging in a short span. imagine what he is 86 years old. 68% of americans think that he is too old for a second term and 70% don't want him to run. but he is going to run and get the nomination. >> gillian: i worked at the white house for four years. i looked 25 years older on my last day. leave it at that. >> you gained it back. don't worry. >> gillian: no primary debate so far. charlamagne tha god called out the dnc this week.

>> it's whacked the dnc won't do no primaries next year. do some primary debates. put joe biden on stage with bobby kennedy and marianne williamson and whoever steps up to the plate and let's have a discussion. >> gillian: expletives aside do you think it is a good idea? >> if i was joe biden i wouldn't debate. there is not a serious candidate out there. robert f. kennedy never held elected office. it is interesting he has 19% based on his name recognition. if a serious contender ever got in there and wanted to knock biden out they would come in even higher. he will follow the basement strategy. instead of the basement in delaware it will be the basement of the white house. he will let -- he ran against donald trump by letting donald trump in 2020 be the focus of the campaign and turn it into a referendum on donald trump. that's his strategy going into 2024 is looks like trump is headed towards the nomination.
8:07 am
and the "wall street journal" poll last week, trump's old pollster and a super pac right now looked at the voters who said that they disapproved of both men, trump and biden, and biden wins those by 39 points. 54 to 15. so the swing voters who disapprove of both biden and trump disapprove of trump even more. that's a big problem for the republicans going into the fall because they need to win the 59% in the gallup poll who disapprove of biden's performance in office. but if it's somebody on the other ballot who they disapprove of more biden will get reelected. >> gillian: there is also the economy. president biden said he has never been more optimistic of the future. wall street has some concerns. one top exec said the u.s.
8:08 am
economy is unwell. only 35% approve of biden's handling of the economy. very challenging for the president's re-election campaign. voters this week were calling it their top issue. growth numbers out this week is like not going to help, either. take a listen. >> 1.1% growth of the economy in the first quarter. it was estimated that it would be 2%. it was still down from the fourth quarter of last year. the economy is slowing down. that's not the way you want to go into an election. >> gillian: the economy has been the one consistent factor over the first half of the first term. whenever former president trump is in the future, whatever candidates may emerge on the other side, this is something that biden will be held accountable for. >> or not. so 75% of voters in that gallup poll say they expect the economy to get worse. only 19% think it is getting
8:09 am
better. it could get worse as we go along. it was about the same number before the mid-terms in 2022 and joe biden turned in the best performance of any president in the first mid-term election except for george w. bush right after the 9/11 attack. it wasn't because they approved of him but disapproved of the alternatives the republicans were putting forth. if we put forward the wrong types of candidates, it is a get out of jail free card for joe biden on his economic performance. we have the worst inflation in 40 years, worst collapse in real wages and worst border crisis and worst crime wave since the 1990s. highest gas prices on records. his campaign should be dead on arrival. the only way it gets revived if we choose candidates who are going to -- voters will look and say biden is terrible but this would be worse. >> gillian: well, on that upbeat note, marc, we will have to say
8:10 am
goodbye. thank you for taking time with us this morning. >> all right, take care. >> gillian: biden administration putting out plans to help the border. republicans say they have had it with spend, spend, spend policies. listen. >> apparently the president has failed civics 101. it is the legislative branch that controls the purse strings and the way our founders set it up. his budget would increase spending and taxes. we have to get it under control. >> gillian: the white house not budging on budget negotiations. some democrats are saying it's time to talk. jason smith will join us next. veteran homeowners, it's time to fight inflation. use the three p's: plan ahead by getting a va cash out home loan from newday. pay off your high rate credit cards. pay yourself cash. okay everyone, our mission is complete balanced nutrition.

>> gillian: a national treasure off limits to americans for a while starting tonight parts of yosemite will be closed for a few days because of massive flooding expected as snow melts. the second time they have had to close just this year. fox weather's robert ray is live at the park. >> good morning to you. it is absolutely magical and beautiful here in yosemite national park. look at the expanse but look at some of the aerials and ground video of snow pack in sierra

nevada mountains. causing a melt off they haven't seen in years in yosemite. in the distance you see potentially the water coming down this canyon side, the granite beautiful majestic mountains. with all that water coming down. tonight at 10:00 p.m. tourists are going to have to leave yosemite for several days. they are hoping to reopen at some point early mid next week. they just don't know what these rivers are going to do over the weekend. they could potentially flood some roads out and you see in this meadow now we're beginning to see some of the water that is coming down and seeping through. that water is rushing on creeks that normally are very slow moving and the waterfalls are coming down intensely. if you get close to some of those waterfalls you feel the air and energy come at you like a tropical storm if you are on the ground. they haven't seen flooding like

this since the late 90s. they hope it won't get as bad as it potentially could. as that snow continues to melt in the sierras in the spring and summer you can expect the potential for rolling closures in the next few months. back to you. >> gillian: robert ray live from yosemite. thank you. a lawsuit with the ban on transgender surgeries and they say drugs and procedures are medically necessary for some kids. new opinion piece is fighting back on this claim. quote this is not civil rights or acceptance or inclusivity. it is reckless, dangerous, and most of all unnecessary. for about a dozen or so states have taken similar action similar to the tennessee laws.

some democratic states are doing a opposite. some proposals even prevent parents from knowing what their kids are doing. here is kat timpf. >> on the basic level i believe that children are their parents' children and don't belong to the states. how would a parent not know that a child was going through something like this? this is something that parents have to know about just logistically regardless of the fact that i think it's crazy to have children be making permanent decisions when they are minors. >> gillian: let's bring in sean duffy, co-host of "the bottom line" on fox business. what do you say? >> if you care about kids, you don't want to let them make a decision when they aren't old enough to sign a contract. you can't sign a contract if you're under 18. now to say you will have the department of justice under joe biden push back on states that want to protect children from castrating themselves, mutilating their genitals is
8:50 am
insanity coming from the department of justice. i think when you peel back the layers you say what has happened in culture and society where you have had an explosion of young people who say they are gay or trans or non-binary. is this a natural percentage that comes in society or is something happening socially or psychologically to the community that's making them say i want to go through this transition? if it's not in their hearts and it's actually a social pressure, they will transition and live to regret it. they may not be able to have kids in the future and mutilating their bodies. what is wrong saying wait until you are older and more mature to make a decision that will alter your life for the rest of your life? democrats, gillian, we saw they don't care about kids whether we shut down schools, masking our children and now fighting to make sure that children can mutilate themselves. this policy doesn't make any sense if you care about the children of america.
8:51 am
>> gillian: look at this, sean. two california middle school teachers are suing a school district claiming the school's policy required them to lie to parents about their kids' gender identity claiming any pronouns or gender-specific name requested by the student during school and using biological names when speaking to parents to hide their gender identity from them. this issue and the two sides fighting back and forth about it hinge on if you put aside gender identity, sexual identity for a moment here, this narrowly is about parents' right to know and the fact that some teachers now feel infringed upon because they are in effect banned from sharing information about the child with the parent. that doesn't exist anywhere else. there is no other specialized category of information about kids in classrooms that teachers are not allowed to share with

parents. >> right. it goes back to kat's point that you aired earlier joe biden earlier this week said our nation's children belong to all of us. no, it doesn't. your children belong to the parents. if the school is making decisions or teachers are helping a child make decisions and it is a wrong decision, those teachers aren't there to counsel and care for the child for the rest of their life. the principal isn't there, the school board isn't there. it's the parents who are there for the child. the parents are the ones who know the child the most and care the most about the child. let them be part of the decision making for the child. and so again, i think this is a small radical group of leftists trying to push this ideology. we've seen it online. what would the leftists say if you had a teacher secretly baptizing children in school and promoting faith in school without the knowledge of the parent? they would lose their minds over that, right? you can't pour water on someone's head and baptize them
8:53 am
but mutilate their genitals without the parents knowing? this is how crazy the left has become. it is out of sync with the mainstream culture in america. >> gillian: it goes a step beyond that meaning when some teachers feel it is in the interests of the child to share information about them with the parent, they are blocked from doing that. it seems a perversety. >> i think the parent knows what kind of social pressures and psychological issues the child might have and are better able to help the child navigate what is happening in their personal lives far more than a school system or teacher or principal or school counselor. again, in the end the consequence of this is kids get hurt. kids don't make good decisions when you take it out of the realm of the family and parents. >> gillian: hunter biden appears in a courtroom on monday over a

child support dispute involving his 4-year-old daughter. he insists the child is not his daughter. information in his financial files could relate to the probe of his overseas business dealings. "the washington examiner" has a new report on former intelligence officials who signed that 2020 letter. it suggested the hunter biden laptop story was likely russian disinformation. three of those people who signed ended up getting top political appointments. what do you say? >> first off, the mother of the child of the 4-year-old baby, navy, the mom is asking for financial assistance. child support from hunter biden and hunter is like here are my taxes. the mom is smart, a graduate and says i won't take your tax records. i've read the reports, i've seen the whistleblower. this is fought your actual income. you have made far more money with your shady foreign deals. i want to see all of the income you've made. to your point, that can play

into this long-running i.r.s. case that happened with hunter biden and so listen, i think it will play out in a very interesting way. the court can force this information to the public square where the i.r.s. will not. >> gillian: we have to leave it there. thank you for your time today. >> thanks. >> gillian: thanks for watching "the faulkner focus."
