extremists getting social security that you paid for your entire life, dictating what healthcare decisions you can make. banning books. >> low-key launch for a low-key president who often seems to fade into the background. the day the president told the country he would be seeking a second term, that was one of 5 or 6 stories, the white house feels perfectly comfortable with that as if the let's focus on the 80-year-old president and more on the former president, but are biden's advisors giving the impression by sharply limiting his own scripted events and interactions with journalists that they don't trust him, to avoid talking his way into trouble? this is media buzz. ♪ howard: how did biden get reporters questions in advance?

to say there are different media reactions to biden's video and his candidacy would be an understatement. >> all he could come up with is calling his opponent, not just his opponent but those who vote for his opponent in the last election, calling trump voters extremists. >> president biden goes out when he's ready to go out. if he handles the media the right way, the guy is going to be very strong in 2024 whether he is 80 or 82 or 83. >> old man biden is back to the screaming how evil mag republicans are and they are going to ruin the country. >> indicted twice impeach the guy from florida. >> all biden needs is a welding press corps, they are able to shield him like they did in 2020.

attacking trump supporters. assuming trump would be the nominee, hoping trump might be the nominee. not touting his own record at all. i understand biden surrogates can show up and say he's done this, that, the other, tick off a bunch of boxes and a litany of things they would say. is that record. but the american people aren't buying it as the polling shows. he's an unpopular president. what this was an indication of is a president who's going to try for reelection against someone he hopes will be less popular than he is where it will be a referendum on the other person, not on him and he will try to run out 2,024 version of a basement campaign. howard: campaigns -- the media critique is the video route was the safest. i was so struck, mostly saw

pictures. he might stumble on a live speech. >> the washington post called a gauzy video. that's not not a compliment. i heard this morning abc this week called it a soft launch. when you look at the video piece of it, that opens him to criticism, and don't count out, the possibility for two reasons this is a calculated choice beyond avoiding those issues. in this digital age, in the demographic, are much more inclined to click on a highly produced short video than to look at something when they come home because this came out in the morning and say 47 minute speech, not listening to that. secondly, they click on that

and it spreads wider and further. we talk on this show about how networks choose not to carry speeches. campaign events, rallies, congressional events. this way they circumvent the decision by any network chief not to run it. they put it out there and it shows up in people social media feeds more widely. howard: this white house is about circling the media. president biden is the nominee barring a calamity. the majority of democrats don't want him to run. they like him but don't want him to run again. it was only whispered about several months ago. it was a key focus in the coverage even among outlets that are friendly to the president. >> that is right and in chicago i can't help but think about barack obama and the love affair the media had with him. they loved that guy.

they were strong supporters of him. with biden it is a shrug. when you look at those polls, most democrats don't want biden to running for reelection, those are democrats. that's the base of the democratic party and they don't have a thrill about this administration and this president but they have a fiery passion for the other side of the aisle. everyone looking around saying are we doing this? i guess we are doing this and they will ask questions when they can and play their part from time to time, they don't seem offended by being cut out largely from this process in terms of questions for the president directly. there are at this point going along with and we will see if that changes and surprised if it does. howard: journalists are offended by the lack of access. one angle from the media, so

focused, just in that moment, the voting doesn't start until next year. even democrats, who really don't want him to run, they will face a very different choice in november 2024 if in the rematch of president biden versus donald trump. >> what you have seen on a lot of media shows that are focused on politics, people looking and asking and going out and doing the man on the street, martha just had an 8 minute man on the street where she went all over pittsburg and the surrounding areas of pennsylvania and specifically spoke to people, democratic voters first, they did not like the idea of his age. the fact that he's 80, 82 when he is sworn in at the end of his term. that was pretty interesting.

you say they hated the previous administration, you could look at it like that or they love to hate, every time, donald trump was on the air or having a rally everybody took it. that changed a little bit but nonetheless there is less access but regardless the media are going after the age issue and you have some economists talking about it and other topics. >> the age question was whispered about. candidate nikki haley with 5 years, kind of crude. at the heart of all of these doubts, even among democrats, they watch him in action and it does tie up the critique of the media in that fewer and fewer unscripted the counters for any

length of time -- >> right. biden is fond of saying watch me to his detractors. we've all been watching him and there's less to watch to your point which is part of the problem. ask eos had a story that this is from white house sources, hard to book the president for meeting or events, and those are like bankers hours. the presidency is not a part-time job, doesn't get up for any official business, to delaware or wherever he was doing, don't get started on weekends, that's a significant story. the american people, you don't have to be age, it's less about age and more performance. izzy spry, is he quit, is the energetic? there are plenty of people in

their 80s who would give less pause through their performance than he has so it is a reasonable thing to raise. he is the almost president in the history of this country and the question about his running mate, is that something people want to think about, these are relevant issues. howard: there will be more focus on kamala harris. do uc with age being front and center, the media pouncing on every gaffe and memory lapse, just like after dan quayle, he always made gaffes, it is 40s he would stumble. >> there is the point where there are people in their 50s who are complete mental mess versus somebody like biden who is running the country, pushing things like the chips act,

semiconductor act that got bipartisan votes on it. that's complicated. there are issues when it comes to age that even biden is attacking, he made the joke at the white house correspondents dinner that he's for freedom of the press. jimmy madison wrote it. that was hundreds of years ago. he is ready and he said it is fair. he said in the speech on the same day the video was released it is fair that people question my age. that should be a decision they make. guy brought up what biden always says which is watch me. mary bruce of abc news asked watch me, the american people are watching, at least when it comes to the polls. whether was nbc or writers? >> when we come back the president's chi-chi. how did biden know exactly what and los angeles times reporter was going to ask him? ♪

howard: if president biden seems well prepared for the first question in a joint press conference with the south korean leader it may be because he had a chi-chi. a photographer captured by the next note which not only had a picture of the los angeles times reporter and her pronunciation but a summary of her question on semiconductor manufacturing with suggested answers. >> ruled against expanding chip manufacturing in china is hurting south korean companies that rely heavily on beijing. are you damaging a key ally? >> my desire to increase manufacturing jobs in america is not about china. i'm not concerned about china. remember, america invented the semiconductor.

howard: los angeles time says it's reported didn't submit the question in advance but spends time talking to the press office. karine jean-pierre said this. >> it is entirely normal for a president to be briefed on reporters who will be asking questions at a press conference, and issues that we expect they might ask about. howard: it is not clear how president biden got the gist of the first question, but there it was on his note card, a long, detailed answer about semiconductor manufacturing and geopolitics. is there something not closure? >> maybe it was a lucky guess where this reporter had been asking questions behind the scenes about this issue and said mr. president, we believe that she might ask about this and here is some preparation but that is a very detailed little cheat sheet not just with her identity, question number one,

the name, the pronunciation, the photo and talking points specifically about what she proceeded to ask about. we have several colleagues at fox who used to be white house press secretary. they all came out saying this is basically unheard-of. it should be. if there was any tipping of the hand or collusion in this way, that is very much out of bounds. we did our job. the staff doing its job, anticipated well. people have their doubts and there are reasons people have their doubts. howard: ari fleischer think this is a scandal. he will sniff around. you might guess there is a question with the south korean leader. does that leave the impression that we put it bluntly. sent about with no cards. >> did reporters give the exact

questions? let's put that aside, they are denying it at the moment. do you have the fear, i'm talking about the white house. the you have the fear that president biden may not be able to handle certain questions so they over prepare. every good comes person, i talked to ceos all the time, they have, people who will watch my previous interviews with their rock idols and figure out and try to do you do what i would ask. that is part of the game. however, you've got michael sprichonic. saying there's political malpractice being committed on behalf of the white house because it fosters the impression that he requires that level of assistance. i think ari fleischer doesn't remember things that guys should remember coming in 2019 donald trump was caught with a

cheat sheet as he met with survivors and parents of the parkland murdered children, the school shooting, he had a note card that reminded him to be empathetic and say things like i hear you. one year earlier he had gone to a press conference and talked about the ukraine scandal, whether he pressured zelenskyy on certain issues and he had written over and over again, there was no quid pro quo. that was caught on camera. let's ask this one question. do we want our world leaders to be riffing? either democrats or republicans? i don't think so. howard: there's a difference between notes and potentially a question in advance, detailed response. ashley: with rich is what i said. that's another part we are denying. we don't know. howard: i will come back to you where the president said people watch me and judge me, i have it or don't have it. he blue off the last two

bilateral press conferences. the last two meetings he had with foreign leaders, until this one. i think maybe the complaints and pressure might have prompted them to realize they should go ahead and do this. may be notecards are effective and all that. i'm not sure riffing isn't a good idea. biden is too closeted and even at the risk of saying something wrong or stumbling, people should see him in action. that would help him, it would help the press corps in the country. >> you want to have confidence the president can take questions on any relevant topic and handle those with some degree of confidence. that's a bare minimum expectation from the american people and a lot of people are questioning if that is the case. it is not unusual at all for press teams to anticipate questions. it's not unusual at all for

howard: fox abruptly parted company with tucker carlson on monday morning. >> fox news media and tucker carlson have mutually agreed to part ways. tucker's last show was this past friday. we want to thank tucker carlson for his service to the network as a host, and prior to that, as a long-term contributor. if the 16 foxes using rotating host for fox news tonight before settling on a permanent host. wall street journal reports that the chief executive of fox and suzanne scott, ceo of fox news media made the decision which came days after fox paid big bucks to settle the dominion lawsuit. fox executive's were disturbed, says the journal, by private texts in which carlson criticized management. the paper says carlson called the senior fox executive the seaward and said he didn't care who knew it. tucker privately declared as you heard that he hated donald trump.

the journal send carlson, the highest rated host but a lightning rod for criticism, saying in a, they morning minutes before the news was announced and will be paid for the rest of his contract. carlson asked why the move was being made. the los angeles times and others reported rupert murdoch supported the move and a lawsuit by a fired fox producer who worked on tucker carlson and alleges an atmosphere of sexism may have been a factor as well. carlson posted it would a video saying how stupid and irrelevant most television debates are. an hour after the fox announcement, cnn said it was parting ways with don lemon. >> he thanked don for his contribution over the past 17 years writing in part don will forever be part of the cnn family. we wish him well and we will be cheering him on in his future endeavors.

attack gop president a candidate vivek ramaswamy over black history calling him a liar come making insulting arguments and barely letting him talk. interestingly a lemon hired as his spokesperson former cnn executive allison gallas who was fired with jeff zucker for not telling the company of their affair. that is not all. during the same 24 hour period, jeff schell, ceo of nbc universal was fired by parent company comcast after an outside investigation for what he acknowledged was an inappropriate relationship with a female subordinate which i deeply regret. i'm truly sorry, i let my comcast and mc's -- nbc universal colleagues down. the next day, cnbc anchor and international correspondent hadley gamble identified herself as the woman in a years long relationship. investigation arose from a complaint that my client, of sexual harassment and sexist, nation, given the circumstances it's disappointing that my

howard: the feud between ron desantis and disney is a legal battle with the company suing the flora governor saying is being singled out for punishment, saying it really good company as woke and his spokesman says mickey mouse and

company trying to operate outside the bounds of the law. disney and ceo bob iger criticized the state law barring teaching of sexual orientation or gender identity in public schools. desantis's move a targeted campaign of retaliation. >> a lot of the media in central florida used to hate this disney arrangement and wanted it to go away. because i was the one that brought it to a end they have to be against me. they are shielding for disney to get corporate welfare, to get subsidies. can you believe that? howard: joining us is jim garrity with "national review". disney was a perfect target for desantis, woke and all but. the company had a sweet deal in florida governing its own district. i'm hearing even conservatives say it is not conservative for governor to go after a private company. >> this is a five layer cake, pick your angle.

to me this seems like a strawberry shortcake and here's how this plays out in where i think the governor finds himself in hot water. disney is one of the number one employers in the state of florida. brings in huge dollars. i was born, when i started going to disney world, taking a family four to disney world could cost you 5, 6, $700 so this company is bringing tourists to florida and business to florida. ron desantis chose to point them out because he likes to play the game in the media. where this is working against him is now disney is like we have the first amendment to say whatever we want to say and you can't stop us from saying it and ron desantis finds himself as he ways a presidential run, have i gone, overshot my skis here? how much trouble have i gotten myself in, have i opened a window for other candidates to attack me? >> he is soon going to run for

important. this is ron desantis, anyone to israel, japan, a couple other places. showing he is a born leader. this happens when his team walked back a statement about ukraine, calling a regional problem. this, here in lies the problem as he moves forward as a president a candidate. he seems to have figured out how to play florida. florida app the media and the nation's media are uniquely different. this is where he will find himself in trouble. when you answer questions like that, they will play in the united states. >> the press press was tough on him. he wasn't charismatic and the question about his personality seems to be more that he is not natural. >> i'm reminded of mitt romney's trip overseas, and a solemn memorial and a reporter said what about your gaffes? will you give us a comment about your gaffes?

howard: donald trump is planning to blow off the republican debates because he is so far ahead. >> they want to the bait. i have people, one half of 1% to one 12:45% to 1%, 3%, 2%, 4%, 7%. desantis is very low and crashing could. we are 60%, 70%. why would you do that? howard: you said you had hostile anchors asking questions. why subject yourself to be libeled and abused?

the real reason trump doesn't want to subject himself to biased anchors? >> if he is scared, yeah. this is the guy, the toughest guy in the world, i can deal with anybody, i can handle but i'm not going to debate. they could ask me questions. they could ask can ask unfair questions. he did a lot of debates last time and skipped one and i away if one in iowa if i remember in 2016. i was going to bring that up but you have quicker historical knowledge, it was a fox debate because he was angry about the previous one with megyn kelly. fox has the first debate. is it that he is substantially ahead 53% to 21% over desantis? he doesn't want to give the spotlight to people who are at 2%, 3%, 4%? >> i do think there is a campaign strategy.

a question for the trump campaign, that's what folks need to understand. in a world in which he goes to the first debate he will be on one network and one network will get this debate. or he could give a >> beyond all the networks. >> he did that. >> he could counter programs this, knowing he's ahead. he is ahead by 20 points against anybody else. it benefits him to not sit on the debate stage as much as we want him to be there. >> it will be good for the public if he still has -- of 30 lead over desantis by summer. let's talk about something that's getting coverage. he g carol says trump raped her in a department store in the 90s. he has -- it's not a criminal trial, but trump has denied even meeting her little-known raping her. a lot of daily coverage.

do you think voters are paying attention since this allegedly happened decades ago? >> not yet but we will tune in more. the headline trump rape will get people's eyes turning to it. we've seen lots of lawsuit against trump in the past, a lot get settled out of court and not coming to a climactic conclusion but i wonder if the water was charmed, the news viewer's got about audiences were prepared by the indictment in new york, the attention paid to a court case involving donald trump is a bigger deal now and he's a declared presidential candidate. >> and a former president who was indicted. one of the things that is come up since she got grilled on cross-examination is she didn't reveal this until she wrote a book in 2019. she had some rough questions, why didn't you go to the police, she said she wasn't ready to go public until she published that book. >> jim brings up a good point.

both of the stories, you don't look at them in a vacuum. you look at them overall. depends which audience he was talking to. one audience, the folks are like we are not fans of the president, the story tracks. this was awful, this is terrible but these aren't folks who were voting for trump to begin with. the second audience are folks who are supporters of the president who see all these cases in a vacuum, these are all witchhunts against the vacuum, this is not first or second case, not the first time we've seen trump and rape in the same sentence. we are going to put this in a vacuum and say this is a witchhunt against the president. depends which audience you are talking to and how they will perceive this news. >> the other cable news networks are very interested. it is interesting the way you tie those two together. if you think about it, even those who do this for living, car constant barrage of penance testify before the grand jury,
