from their normal duty and placed in the role of security officer. they are just called upon and reassigned, often at lower wage than normal correctional officer. >> is this basic training enough to do this job? >> it is what everybody is given in the national front when hired. however, they don't utilize it daily, they can be unaware of day-to-day operations. >> frank, this question, what does, how dangerous can this be for you guys, especially with the staffing shortages? >> it does create a danger, it does. fully staffed prison is a safe prison. when you reassign people, it affects the first step taking teachers and case managers and

putting into correctional officer positions, it is making it harder and helps inmate families and creates a better environment for everybody when we're fully staffed. >> ashley: right, i wouldn't imagine. frank, why are prisons having hard time retaining correction officers? what are they doing wrong? >> in florence here, prices have skyrocketed, this 25% for correctional officers is necessity to maintain decent living out here, that is our main focus, getting 25% for all is our main focus. >> ashley: right. then, john, what are incentives for prison guards to stay on and do this? any incentive they are giving you guys? >> correctional officers receive

25% retention pay. counselors and teachers receiving 10%, showing not to be working. we're seeing rise in correctional officers, however, decline in the noncustody positions, teachers or counselors to the effect of i think we retain 24 staff in a year. where is attrition at a high rate. >> ashley: latest report from the inspector general officer shows 4000 unfilled guard positions in the united states. so john, what happens if that number keeps growing? what could our future look like with the prison system? >> from our aspect locally, vantage points, you can see it, we will reassign custody staff to fill in behind correctional officer and this year alone in
