tv America Reports FOX News May 3, 2023 11:00am-12:00pm PDT
11:00 am
against traffic in some cases. you knew it was something big. four people shot, three hospitalized, at least one dead so far, and no shots fired after the initial round of shots. taking place in a medical office building and keep in mind, this was lunchtime midtown atlanta, a lot of people going to get lunch or working in their businesses, these people are scared, shots and a major police presence. they shut down the marta, probably to try and prevent an escape. shut down traffic around the area, now a ghost town as the hunt goes on. when i was there medical patients seemed to be streaming out of a building, escorted by police, so in medical gowns, or wheelchairs, and crying and hugging each other. some people getting treatment have now had to be taken for
11:01 am
more serious treatment, to grady hospital or trauma treatment. civilians have been pushed back quite a ways and being here in downtown atlanta, a sense even of those not directly victimized by this, a sense of fear. this is wednesday, middle of the day, downtown atlanta, and now a huge police presence, shots fired, an hour later the shooter still at large. so, people are afraid and they are wondering what is happening in the heart of their city. >> john: and again, we asked the question of joe cardnellie do we know any specific area or danger posed by the person on the loose if he encountered someone, or are they just casting a net far and wide across the city as we see some pictures of you mentioned medical personnel
11:02 am
exiting the building. some are wearing hair nets, may indicate they were involved in administering medical procedures at the time. again, this is an office building, it's not an actual hospital. northside hospital, the affiliated hospital is up at the intersection north of the city, but phil, i'm sorry, steve, do woe know if there is a specific area or just casting a net across the entire metropolitan atlanta area? >> i think they are trying to cast a wide net but also prevent the means to escape, by shutting down the marta and schools as well. schools are put on lock-down, how the fear, how the rear terror ripples out. anyone with a kid in public schools in midtown, shopping, working in midtown area, a sense of fear and uncertainty at this point.
11:03 am
>> sandra: we are waiting any sort of update, sometimes at this point we would be getting notification of a press conference by the police. if you can take that picture, is it live in the top right corner of the screen, ok. so, this was earlier. just so everybody knows, this was immediately on the scene when these folks were obviously exiting the building, some of them were talking to cameras right away, we had them on the program saying what they had seen, what they had heard, just a horrific, scary situation, loved ones have come to reunite with them on the scene there, everybody is on their phone calling loved ones as word was spreading. you are talking about the first phone call and response from police just after 12:30 p.m. local time, an hour and a half into this, but the spent is at large and the manhunt is underway. police are not briefing yet, they are obviously busy still looking for this person. once they have some information, i'm sure we'll get an update.
11:04 am
no word on that happening just yet. so as we continue to follow that, steve, let us know when you hear something from the ground, for now, one dead, three transported to the local hospital there and still waiting an update on their condition, and any where abouts of the subject, the subject, wearing a hoodie, a bag across his chest and considered armed and dangerous, john. >> john: certainly a big concern for everybody who is living in that area. lawrence jones is with us, and lawrence, you have so diligently reported on crime across america in so many different places. i used to live in atlanta, it was considered at the time that i was there to be a pretty safe place. but a lot of that has changed in last few years and now we see the shooting at the height of the noon hour in what is
11:05 am
typically considered to be a fairly safe area of atlanta, even though there have been some shootings in the area in the past. a man was shot in his car when somebody was hiding in the car, there was a woman who was shot, a young woman shot in a parking lot just north of there, somebody trying to steal her car. but typically not the area of america you expect a crime like this to happen. >> john, an uptick of criminal activity, shootings all over the country. law enforcement have a tough task here, i've covered a lot of the active shooter situations. right now they are trying to establish a perimeter to cut the suspect off. they have released an image, we don't have a name just yet. i'm assuming that law enforcement are using all their tools, fish shall recognition software to figure out who this guy is, x while they are maintaining this perimeter, they
11:06 am
are also trying to make sure that we don't get ourself into a barricaded situation that the suspect goes somewhere that is considered a soft target, that's schools, local businesses, those places directly in the area are now on lockdown, so the suspect doesn't get in that situation, you get some type of hostage situation. it's a big area in atlanta and so there are many places where this suspect can go, that's why the number one task is figuring out who exactly, who he is, relatives, what is the motive. we know many cases when someone shoots someone they know the person. and so they need to figure out the motive what this connection was, was it a loved one, someone they had a former girlfriend, we don't know any of that.
11:07 am
but law enforcement is trying t figure out who that person is and what connection they had to the suspect. >> sandra: and if we could go back to the scene where medical personnel are seen walking down the sidewalk, some exiting the building and surrounding buildings, everybody is evacuating or sheltering in place, one would assume. released from the building they are in, but actively wearing their scrubs and removing themselves from a situation that has been just horrific for anybody living through this or has on the ground there. >> cops are doing multiple things as once, processing the crime scene right now, they have also folks coming in to render aid to those victims as well. right now, you know, only reporting one dead and three hospitalized. but in these situations they are very fluid. there has been active shooters where someone has been nicked and did not have any clue because of the adrenalin rush. so it's a very fluid situation. plus you have a fugitive on the loose where they are going after them.
11:08 am
the cops have their hands in a lot of stuff right now, while also making sure that the suspect doesn't go after a soft target as well. hopefully they are using all the tools which i know the atlanta police, they are good at their job, i know the fbi is assisting them at their local field office. assembling their team to go after the suspect, but they don't know where he is and don't don't know the identity of the suspect. but hopefully we can get the information some time soon. right now, law enforcement are not doing briefings because there is nothing to brief the public on. they have to get their hands on the identity of the suspect, before they can release anything to the public. >> john: you mentioned potential motive and we don't know at this moment what was going on in this shooter's mind. we have seen shootings in medical centers in the past,
11:09 am
sometimes healthcare providers have been targeted for various reasons, sometimes it's domestic, somebody going after a spouse or a girlfriend or a boyfriend. we don't know any of that in this case. but i think the most important thing, lawrence, we don't know at this point is the whereabouts of this person who is being described as armed and dangerous by police. if you see this person on the street, do not approach them. but we have no idea where in the world in atlanta and it's a big place this person might be. so people are told to stay indoors, unless they are in the police lockdown area. we don't know if this person fled in a car and on the way and lord knows where they might be, or fled on foot and in another building, or piedmont park down the street, or potentially got on one of the two, went down to one of the two marta stops, midtown or arts center and
11:10 am
jumped on the train and could be bound for lord knows where. so a lot of questions at this moment, lawrence. but again, it's just a real statement sort of on where we are in america in may of 2023 where in a normally quiet area in the middle of the day, a bustling wednesday in midtown atlanta you have a mass shooting like this. >> sandra: update from the northside hospital twitter feed, they are cooperating with the hospital at the midtown atlanta location. urge people in the area to shelter-in-place and follow instructions from law enforcement on the scene. so we have some medical professionals, and the medical team we saw was escorting a patient wearing the yellow socks in the middle of them, there
11:11 am
could have been active hospital medical procedures ongoing when this happened. possibly at critical times, scary to think about, lawrence. but northside hospital saying they are cooperating with law enforcement on the scene. urging people shelter-in-place, what you have to do. and if you see anything, call 911. >> law enforcement are probably using all their tools, how did the suspect get to the scene, looking at all of that, license plate readers. one thing i will say on this, we don't know the motive or his name yet, one thing i've been hearing from law enforcement as i travel across the country, people are so angry, they are on edge. ever since the pandemic, people are just showing their frustration in such a violent way. there is going to be more of these. it's sad, but we have to prepare as a society, that's why it's important that we support law
11:12 am
enforcement, give them the tools necessary so they can go after evil. evil will always exist, seems like they feel these -- they feel empowered because of all the cities that have made it very clear that they are going to defund the police, they are not going to hold people accountable. creates the environment where people feel like they can get away with this type of madness. with we cannot live in civilized society that one. when i travel around and the men and women have the tools necessary, they will find this person, door to door, and the office building where the suspect was. every room has to be searched. he could still be there and also they are making sure that all these other buildings, schools, are on the lockdown, so we don't get ourself in another situation where it becomes a barricaded
11:13 am
suspect or hostage situation. >> john: as was pointed out before, atlanta was a regional hub for many different agencies. in addition to the local police there, in addition to the georgia state police, in addition to georgia tech police just down the street, you have all sorts of federal law enforcement as well. fbi has a substantial office there, dea is there, federal building downtown. even though many cities are experiencing a shortage of police officers, there are so many agencies there in atlanta that if you issue a bolo like they have today and issue an all hands on deck order, you are going to get a lot of man power, woman power on the streets looking for this fella and they have a pretty good idea of what he looks like as well from that one image that was taken from inside the elevator, just below the image of me on the screen
11:14 am
there. so if somebody knows who this person is, get in touch with atlanta police or any local law enforcement. >> sandra: you have to imagine the horror for the parents with kids in schools nearby, the atlanta public school system has issued a public safety alert and put their schools into lockdown. they just issued a statement saying such, aps community and the area immediately surrounding 1110 peach tree street, several atlanta public schools will operate on exterior lockdown the remainder of the day, meaning they will not let anyone in the building, not let anybody out of the building but school will continue out of abundance of caution. campuses are secure, out of abundance of caution. they say a second time in that
11:15 am
statement. families this may create traffic issues which could result in bus delays this afternoon. appreciate everyone's patience and it's going to take a whole lot of that. this person remains at large. >> the deal is, maybe he's no longer a threat, we don't know that for sure. the person could be holed up in the building, but if you run, many times a person commits a shooting at one place and then to another place and commits a shooting there, and then a third place, so there is still a palable threat to the public in atlanta. let's bring in bill daly on the phone with us. outline for us what the manhunt looks like at this point because that's really what we are concerned about at the moment>> sure. and good points made by lawrence jones with regard to police and
11:16 am
their response, high note on this, we see, unfortunately, one evil individual has caused such chaos and upsetment and death, and the other things, not just the police and the fire response, but also saw a picture before of medical personnel showing compassion and walking people, seeming to be patients, down the street out of harm's way. as much as the evil side of this, the strong human side and the strong positive thing that america provides, we come together and we work to resolve these issues. you know, a couple points, john, regarding this manhunt, and they certainly need to know whether or not the individual left that building and that's kind of key and they hopefully have resolved that, whether or not the building is clear or not, going floor by floor, if they are not too sure. no longer is that a safe haven
11:17 am
for potential place to commit another act. so, interviewing those people, you know, who may have seen this individual come in, perhaps suggested before by some of your guests is that they may know that person, maybe it was somebody related to one of the employees in some fashion or work there in some way, or had been some type of a customer or a patient, if that is the case. that's very important to help them understand who the person is. the other thing in addition to interviews and it's a technique that was alluded to by lawrence and other guests, the use facial recognition. and police, whether the atlanta people have the ability and the fbi can support, use the image, the photo is a pretty good quality and with maybe a slight enhancement and some clarification, you can use that image to run through various
11:18 am
databases. police use that to search through things such as mug shots or dmv records, to perhaps get a hit. >> sandra: i'm going to ask our team for the white house briefing, apparently kjp -- she's not talking about it right now, we'll rerack whatever, this will be the first response from the white house as this is ongoing. super brief response, a question was put to her. and alert you to the bottom of the screen, we know there will be a hospital press conference on this atlanta shooting soon, about five minutes from now, we are told. we will certainly get to that and hopefully get new information and new details. lawrence jones on set with me here. we await that. certainly this could be a moment we learn more and hopefully, hopefully we have no idea yet,
11:19 am
but possibly they may have some leads on where this person is. >> yes, honor being on with bill as well. obviously he's threading the needle what law enforcement is doing now. part of the reason why the facial recognition is so critical. >> sandra: a live picture, somebody is being pushed away in a stretcher, i don't know if you can grab that. lawrence, we'll try to grab that. >> part of the reason getting the identity is important is because once they figure out who the suspect is, they can start using the web technology to start figuring out who was in close contact with, who is his car, did he use the car to come up on to the scene. a lot of major cities now have these license plate readers, so they would be able to figure out where he was. does he have a cell phone, what towers hit on, where was the last place he turned the cell phone off or on, all of that is crucial. the suspect is at large, armed
11:20 am
and dangerous, and until he is in custody, the surrounding area is on lockdown. >> john: yeah, in order be able to get a ping off a cell phone you have to know who the fella is, lawrence, and i can expect, too, if what some of our learned police analyst said is true, a targeted shooting, it would indicate the victim or victims knew who the shooter was, and if you can get a name from a person you can probably get a cell phone number pretty quickly. absent a cell phone signal, and in hindsight with bryan kohberger and the idaho shootings, he was tracked all over the place, from the scene of the shootings and to his apartment and back again. an accurate fix where the person was. can you do that in realtime in the way that you would need to to to track the suspect down or
11:21 am
would you have to do that forensically? >> for me or bill? >> john: for you. >> that depends. some law enforcement have that technology. as bill was talking about, it's under heavy scrutiny. the fbi has the ability to detect things in realtime, not so much exactly where the suspect is, but what tower that signal is hitting on. so, if he is still in the area and his phone is still active, for example, they can say well, maybe the suspect is still barricaded, or in this radius, which is critical right now. you don't want to expand the grid way too far out as well, because then you start losing the resources of those law enforcement agencies. and they are combing through all the buildings trying to find the suspect. so you want a suspect area to hone in your resources.
11:22 am
>> sandra: a quick update as we await the police presser, don't have the shot up yet, kjp can confirm the president and the vice president are aware, that's all she said in response, at least an update from the white house as the suspect is on the run. these are live images coming in from atlanta as the search is on, and john at this point, hopefully with the press briefing coming, we'll get an update how farther looking for this person, or how close, i should say. >> john: it's a big area, i lived there a number of years and it's a big area to get lost in and big area to try to find somebody in, from where he was in midtown atlanta, it's very easy to get lost if you are -- what is good, according to the police, as of about 50 minutes ago, there were no other shots that were fired in connection
11:23 am
with this incident, at least that's what atlanta police believe, would indicate the person has not barricaded themselves inside a building, not threatened anybody else to our knowledge, and certainly not taken any shots at anybody. what while we continue to cover this breaking news, we have more breaking news that we want to bring you. news from washington involving president biden, our senior national correspondent rich edson has got more about a document that a senator and head of the oversight committee and the house are looking for. rich. >> good afternoon. the house oversight committee chairman james comer has issued a subpoena to the fbi in a letter that he and senator chuck grassley have sent to garland and wray, a highly credible whistleblower says they have a form that describes alleged
11:24 am
criminal scheme exchange of money for policy decisions. a precise description of how the criminal scheme was employed as well as it's purpose. comer and grassley are not talking about the whistleblower, or what they are alleging, in short, a document that an unidentified whistleblower says exists, and it's unclear how the department will respond. >> john: don't know what the scheme is, but only the fbi and the doj have information about the scheme? >> what these two republicans are alleging, a document that exists and they have gotten the of course from an unidentified whistleblower, showing an illegal scheme, involving the vice president and they are requesting that information now with the subpoena from the fbi
11:25 am
and justice department. but these republicans have not seen that document and they have just sent the subpoena request because a whistleblower told them it exists in the fbi. that's where we are right now with this. >> john: are we going to be hearing from them in the near future? >> unclear. i believe they are going to speak to cameras on capitol hill and of course we have a full team up there ready to cover. >> sandra: i have just reached out to chuck grassley's team myself, we'll take him on the phone if available, so we are working that right now on the story. rich, anything else you can add at this hour? this is a big breaking news, piece of information here that they are going to be demanding answers. also reach out to james comer, he was on the program earlier this week, but this is a big chunk of news. and i do see there are some folks making their way to a microphone in atlanta. quick final thought on this news. >> again, it all depends if the document exists, what's in the
11:26 am
document and now they have officially subpoenaed it. if it exists legally, there you have it. >> sandra: let's get to the hospital briefing there in atlanta. rich, thank you. >> no other injuries occurred that we know of and nobody was taken to another facility. the four that were brought here, three are critical, one is still in the emergency department, the other are upstairs being treated. two in the operating room and one in what's called interventional radiology. >> are you able to describe who was shot? >> no, i can't give out that information, i'm sorry. >> how is grady prepared to handle a mass shooting situation? >> so, we called mass casualty event. within minutes we had multiple trauma surgeons, multiple staff
11:27 am
in the trauma bay itself. we cleared out any patients who were currently in the marcus trauma center and we were fully prepared. we were anticipating up to 12 patients. fortunately we only received four, but we were completely prepared for it, we had all the staff we needed, all the ancillary staff, chaplains there, everyone was in the place. we have stopped our mass casualty call now, but we are prepared. >> [inaudible] >> we initially stopped visitors because we were not sure where the shooter is. we are confident now we can let visitors back in. we never locked the hospital down, we just wanted to stop visitors in case there was anything going on. >> can you tell us about the -- [inaudible]
11:28 am
>> when we activate our mass casualty event, that immediately starts our command center. we bring all the surgeon, all the nurses, all the ancillary staff to the trauma center itself. it goes out remotely through phones and announced over the loud speaker and they we start clearing out operating rooms and clearing out the emergency department in case we need additional space. >> i know you can't give a lot of information that can identify, but can you tell us if these are adults, children, age ranges? >> all adults. >> any genders? >> no, i don't have that. >> there their families been notified, are they here? >> a couple families are here, but i don't know about the other ones. >> you said originally preparing for 12, original call might be 12? >> that's what we heard initially, but in these situations a lot of confusion as you know.
11:29 am
>> thank you. >> we'll keep you guys updated. >> robert jansen, chief medical. >> thank you, guys. >> john: so there we hear an update from grady hospital, which is in downtown atlanta, just a couple miles from where the shooting took place. only level 1 trauma center in the atlanta area, where all major shooting victims are taken because they have the capacity to deal with that as we know, three people were injured, one person was reported deceased on the scene. initially as the doctor said there, the medical director, sandra, looked like it was much worse. they had initial information as many as 12 people might be headed to the hospital. thankfully it was not that bad, though having three people in
11:30 am
the hospital and one dead certainly is bad enough. >> sandra: indeed. so the mass casualty plan was activated, according to that doctor there, and update on the victims, the three that were taken to the hospital, one of the victims died on the scene, according to the police. the three taken to the hospital, he did not confirm genders or names, but did confirm that they were all adults. >> john: so we again search for a motive in this. police have not given us any information about what might be behind this. so, for the moment we just -- we have another tragedy on our hands that we are trying to make sense of. former fbi special agent nicole parker is on the phone with us. nicole, you have lengthy experience in this as well as other aspects of law enforcement. if you are on the ground there in that command center that we see on the left side of the screen and you are looking for a person considered armed and dangerous who has already shot four people and killed one,
11:31 am
what's the game plan? >> unfortunately, this is happening far too often in our country, but looking at it from a law enforcement perspective, like many of your other guests have said, the first thing you are doing is setting up the perimeter. make sure the area is secure, you want to take care of the safety of those that may have been affected in the immediate area. everyone needs to shelter-in-place wherever they are. there is someone on the loose, armed and dangerous, be on the lookout for this individual, but they are in a secure and safe area. law enforcement, you asked lawrence jones about tracking individuals. first of all, in order to track someone's cell phone you have to identify the person who committed the crime, but you are going to, i would be looking at the victim, who was the victim shot and killed, who were the others shot, and i guaranteed you that law enforcement is on the ground, but behind the scene
11:32 am
there are analysts running through social media accounts, running through who the victim is, and other victims to see if there is a relationship with the subject who is on the loose. once the subject is identified, then you talk about being able to identify the phone system. you can get a circumstance warrant where you can go up on someone's cell phone in an exogent circumstance. someone has been killed, others shot, likely considered an exogent circumstance, and then you can follow their phone, the pings on the phone. but until the subject is identified they cannot do that until someone is identified. a photo than seen, i saw it on the program, that is the time when individuals, someone knows the person that did this. someone in the atlanta area is likely someone's friend, relative, someone knows who this shooter is, and that picture
11:33 am
needs to get out to the general public so that they can take the assistance of those in the public who can provide tips to law enforcement. right now that's the most important and powerful tool and we had talked about, you know, the different types of surveillance you do. right now, because they don't know where the subject is, there is going to be air surveillance, helicopters, airplanes, doing oversight surveillance and the officers on the ground. canvassing the entire area. basically following the individual's tracks and trying to back to where he came from. did he come from an uber, from a car, come from a bike, take the bus, whatever it might be, take the video surveillance they have and backtrack exactly where he was and they are going to do a canvas and that area and find all the video surveillance footage, piece it together and try to identify who the person is. he was covered, he had a mask on
11:34 am
at one point but at some point they can back into who the individual was. so between looking at the victims, the relationship -- >> sandra: looks like we have dropped nicole, important information she's giving us. >> she was going into specific detail on the backtracking and figure out exactly how the suspect got to the area because right now as she said, they don't, we don't have identity. we have the photo, why they are asking folks if you have information contact the local police. once they get the identity of the suspect then they can start using all the tools that we have been going through from license readers, to the surveillance, to the phone tracking, all that, but until they know who the guy is, this makes it very difficult for law enforcement.
11:35 am
also it's important to identify him because other people -- >> sandra: he's been identified, atlanta police department just posted his name, suspect name, deonpatterson, date of birth, october 1998, and that is what they have just updated. call 911 if you have any information on the person, do not approach him, armed and dangerous. >> they know what his car is, all the pings where his car, right before the shooting is going to come up for him. going to his house, all his known relatives. anyone helping him, they'll talk with them about when is the last time they talked with him, can they get in contact with him. law enforcement want to resolve this situation, it's already deadly, they want to do it peacefully, they want him to be arrested, don't want to go after anyone. what they are going to try to do right now.
11:36 am
>> john: lawrence jones, thank you so much. appreciate it. now that we have a name for the suspect, police will be hot on this person's trail. there's no question about that. we want to jump to the other story that rich edson was talking about, marc thiessen, former white house speech writer for president biden and fox news contributor. we don't know a lot about this. news is just breaking, but two have written to the attorney general seeking a document they say is in possession of the fbi, unclassified internal document, includes very serious and detailed allegations implicating the current president of the united states in a potential criminal investigation while he was vice president. do we know anything about? it's a mystery. >> it is a mystery, it's breaking news, don't know a lot about it. but certainly if the president of the united states was involved in the criminal
11:37 am
investigation the american people have a right to know this, and he was vice president, you know, a decade ago. this is now just coming out right now? like why is it taking this, and why -- chuck grassley is the senator that whistleblowers turn to when they lose hope something will happen through official channels. if this is coming to senator grassley, somebody in the fbi has been trying to raise it through the system a long time and has not been able to get satisfaction, he's going to the senate, to the protector of whistleblowers. >> john: we have no detail on this, but inkling what it is connected to, they ask secretary antony blinken to preserve and provide records he may have related to hunter biden's business dealings overseas, and asked him to provide by may 15 any relevant emails that he may have on this from his personal account. according to a deputy
11:38 am
spokesperson for the state department, state has received the inquiry, we are reviewing it appropriately. what i will say, though, is that i would be -- i would hesitate to take everything that the hill says at face value, there's been a clear track record in many instances taken out of context, misrepresented, so don't know the intent or what's going on here. said we have seen the inquiry and will review it appropriately. so, that gives us a little moderate of an inkling as to what might be afoot here. >> probably some politics going on on capitol hill, not with chuck grassley. he's a straight shooter, a protector of whistleblowers, he would not do it for political purposes, that's not how he operates. >> sandra: left to wonder when they are going to hear from him.
11:39 am
we have reached out, whether we will see a press conference from comer, grassley, either or both in the next couple hours, marc. >> we wait to see the details. again, senator grassley is just the most credible source there is, very bipartisan, a strong track record of other -- put forward other whistleblowers and them having had the goods. we'll wait to see what he says. >> john: president biden at the white house correspondents dinner makes a joke, in a the lo of ways this dinner sums up, i'll talk for ten minutes, take no questions and cheerfully walked away. everybody was laughing at that, but basically saying i'm going to play you folks and will continue to do it. >> never saw the finger press
11:40 am
the finger as quickly as he did. he's not going to talk to the press, not going to give more access, he's going to run the basement strategy. he won the presidency by hiding in his basement in delaware and thinks he can win again by hiding in the basement in washington, d.c., he wants the election, anticipates donald trump will be the nominee, and he does not want it to be a referendum on him, and the worst record of any president in my lifetime, most agree with, but a referendum on donald trump. and i'm sure trump is happy to oblige him. >> sandra: i got a response from the grassley team, they are working on a statement. >> i want to know what it's all about. >> sandra: so by the way, we are still waiting a further update on the ground as this manhunt is underway there in atlanta. marc, you've been following this with us, i'm sure, as well.
11:41 am
the white house just was asked another question about this. i believe the last thing we heard is the president and the vice president are aware of the situation and on atlanta specifically, karine jean-pierre received another question in the briefing, said the president is "frustrated" by the gun violence epidemic as we continue to look at these live pictures out of atlanta. marc, quick thought on this. >> as we are watching this, people fighting for their lives in a hospital, as there is a dead american, the last thing i want to hear is from the white house, and the last thing -- we -- let's leave politics out of this for about five minutes and actually be concerned about the people and the individuals who are -- who have been hurt and try to find this guy and bring this to an end before we politicize it. generally speaking, often times we have seen not only unseemly, but sometimes back fires when they politicize things too soon. >> john: marc, thank you for
11:42 am
joining us, appreciate it. we anxiously await more information on what the hunter biden and joe biden stuff is all about. joe, retired nypd lieutenant. we have an i.d. from atlanta police, 24-year-old deon patterson, don't know anything about him right now, but trying to find out if he has a criminal background or what the deal may be. what are you thinking off the top of your head here, joe? >> i'm thinking that this is, as we stated earlier, targeted and that he has some affiliation with that building, whether it be through a relative that may have been wronged in the medical field or a girlfriend that's there or somebody, or maybe he even worked over there. we'll find all these things out. the key is get him into custody, he still is armed and dangerous, and as we stated earlier, they'll be backtracking. now they have the person identified, they can start
11:43 am
pinging the phone if they have a phone number, and looking at the cameras, and which way he went and widen the dragnet. but lawrence did cover a lot of good areas there, and what's happening in america right now is that the face of crime is changing so drastically. far and few a few years ago, in the 21 years i'm with the network there, it's getting progressively worse and what lawrence is saying is he's on the ground right now watching it change and he's taking you inside these police departments and feel for how everything goes. when you have the shootings now, everybody is notified, the hospitals, everybody is on board right away. there is no delay. the fbi is brought into it right away, it goes to their regional office and they assign people right away. it's boots on the ground immediately. while everything is changing, you still learn every time this happens something new that has
11:44 am
to be put in the protocol. the priority is getting this person in custody before anything else is done, and getting, as lawrence said, the police department does not want to take him out in a dramatic fashion, they would like to ask him what's going on, the rhyme or reason to rest and see what's going on with the person who did it. >> sandra: joe, are you surprised to see people out and about on the streets in atlanta, considering the person could be anywhere, armed and dangerous? >> nope. i've seen it so many times in new york city where you try to tell people to stay in place and everything, you just try to control -- contain the public as much as you can in the surrounding area, but people are curious, and people want to see what's going on. people are getting too used to these things happening right now, and people get involved -- we would hope they would get involved a little more and another point lawrence brought up so crucial, social media. what's it going to take to remove the handcuffs from the --
11:45 am
off the police and let social media get involved with these things immediately without worrying about privacy rights and everything else. when it comes to serious crimes like this, it should be automatic that resources are tapped into by law enforcement, automatic, no discussion about that. >> sandra: we are going to keep watching the situation on the ground, suspect named, deon patterson, four pictures provided, the police is asking for anyone and everyone, anyone with a tip to please speak out. thank you very much, joe, for joining us. straight to chuck grassley and the news, the iowa senator is joining us announcement i know you've just issued a statement on you as well as your colleague, james comer, demanding the fbi record on alleging this criminal scheme involving then vice president biden. this congressional subpoena, you see, seeks a specific fbi
11:46 am
document. thanks for jumping on with us. what can you tell us? >> i will only add to what you say that this comes from a credible and unclassified whistleblower disclosures of this possible criminal activity when biden was vice president and we are -- we want this information and there's a subpoena going to be, or is issued now, and it really boils down to my traditional oversight of government, particularly see the executive branch is doing the work they are supposed to be doing so the justice department and the fbi needs to come clean to the american people what they did with the document because we know the document exists from very credible whistleblower information that we got. we really need to know what
11:47 am
steps did the justice department and fbi take to investigate and to vet the document, to determine if it's accurate or not. and did the justice department and the fbi follow normal investigative procedures or did they let political calculations interfere. you know, and i've documented several times where political interference has kept -- i guess leave it this way. i've had plenty of evidence of political decision-making and who should be investigated or not be investigated. but if the justice department and the fbi have any hopes of redeeming their once trusted position with the american people, garland and wray must answer this subpoena and tell us what they are doing with this information we think is very credible based on what whistleblowers are telling us. >> john: senator, it's john
11:48 am
roberts here. we are wondering exactly what this is all about. according to a press release sent out by james comer's office, the information provided by a whistleblower raises concerns that then vice president biden allegedly engaged in a bribery scheme with a foreign national. and says the american people need to know if vice president biden sold out the american people to make money for himself. that wets our appetite to what this is all about. does this have to do with hunter biden's foreign business dealings in ukraine or china or something else? >> i guess basically, we've got to wait to see what the document exactly says but i'm convinced that we've got to get this detail and at this time the fbi needs to explain whether it's accurate or not.
11:49 am
but this is based upon information that we get from what i think are very credible sources within the department. >> sandra: ok, so we are just getting -- getting a lot of information on a couple different fronts here. all right, also getting an update on hunter biden, senator grassley, u.s. attorney david weiss is said to be close to charging decision. this is being reported by the "washington post." >> isn't it about time after three years, and particularly with that gun situation, pretty -- if you lie to get a gun, that's pretty certain that you should have been prosecuted probably a long time ago. >> john: senator, another piece of breaking news unrelated to this, apparently our affiliate
11:50 am
in atlanta, going back to the shooting, is reporting a car was ditched at campbell middle school in cobb county, they believe he stole a car and dumped it at the middle school and then fled on foot. back to the matter at hand with you, apparently there was also a request to the state department for some documents regarding hunter biden's foreign business dealings. how does all of that tie in with what you are talking about right now? >> i think i see it as separate issue, and it's kind of getting that we want to know exactly what role the secretary of state played and we want this role to be saved through his emails and any other communication he had with the people that wrote the
11:51 am
famous letter, cia former people, in which they said that this business about hunter biden just before the last election was russian disinformation. we know that's a lie but he played a role in it. we want to know what that role is. >> sandra: all right, just reading directly from this, we believe the fbi possesses an unclassified internal document, just to bring our viewers along with this, that includes very serious and detailed allegations implicating the current president of the united states. what we don't know is what, if anything, according to your statement, senator grassley, the fbi has done to verify these claims or investigate further. the fbi's recent history of botching political charged investigations demands close congressional oversight and
11:52 am
quoting you on that, senator grassley. where do you expect it to go next? >> something i'm fearful of, a nonclassified document if it's really got explosive information in it will soon be classified. that's what i'm afraid of. >> john: documents unclassified do have a propensity to suddenly become classified documents when someone goes looking for them. what do you expect the chances are, senator, that this document will be forthcoming? >> well, if it's as explosive as we heard, we expect it to be very difficult to get it. but we know it's unclassified now, and the american people deserve transparency from the fbi, and that's what this is all about. and you know, over several years i've made accusations about this situation or another crime being committed or another political
11:53 am
interference and never once has the fbi or the department of justice challenged my authenticity on what i bring up to them. and even though they don't challenge it, i don't get the information i want that would clear everything up, and it's -- and i think it really hurts the fbi's credibility, it hurts the doj's credibility if they don't cooperate. so i would hope they would want to enhance their credibility by cooperating with us on this. >> sandra: just want to follow up on the report from the "washington post" on hunter biden, a couple different things we are covering with you here, on hunter biden, and the u.s. attorney david weiss saying, is now saying they are close to a charging decision. people familiar with the matter said weiss is nearing the end of his decision-making process, although they offered no specific timetable.
11:54 am
according to the post, they caution the probe is taking longer than some officials thought it would, to your point, senator, about time i believe quoting you directly, frustrating some and law enforcement officials and could slow down before a decision has been reached. we don't know what the time frame here is, no doubt senator any decision could have a significant impact on president biden who is running again for president. >> or could be as simple as his pleading guilty to a gun charge and they drop everything else. >> john: that's -- >> a little tongue in cheek but the way i think today. >> john: something else you are looking at, senator, came out a couple days ago, intended antony blinken was not fully forthcoming to congress in 2020 when he was interviewed about any contact that he had with hunter biden. the question was put to him, did you ever talk with hunter biden on the phone, blinken, not that
11:55 am
i recall. did you have any other means of correspondence with him, emails, texts, blinken, answers no. you say based on the evidence now available your above statement is patently false. emails did reveal you emailed hunter biden on at least two occasions, contradicting what you told congressional investigators. do you need to bring hunter biden back up again before some committee there in congress, i know that you don't control the committees in the senate, but how do you get to the bottom of this? >> well, if they'll prosecute, lying to congress is a crime in and of itself. but i -- i don't know whether i'm so anxious to get somebody found guilty of a crime, i'm interested in this information, and the american people have been hood winked for 3 or 4
11:56 am
years over everything that went to turn the election through this fraud to biden instead of trump, through these accusations of russian disinformation and all that stuff, and we are going to pursue it just to get the information out. you know, transparency brings accountability in government and this cover-up stuff to keep people from being embarrassed is wrong. johnson and i are on this and we are going not going to give up. >> sandra: got it, sounds like nobody is giving up on the hunter biden investigation, to your point years in the making but a decision could be close. senator, what should we expect next on all fronts? >> well, if you are talking about what we have talked about during this program, i think we are just going to have to wait until we get the document. i'm more interested in -- >> sandra: what's the time frame
11:57 am
for that, senator? for getting the document? >> i'm sorry. i want answers and so does america and i don't know whether a time frame works out very well here. we could say we need this information by the middle of may, they don't abide by those deadlines because they don't particularly want to cooperate with us, but it's my job to make sure they do cooperate because of the constitutional responsibility of oversight on the part of congress to make sure that the executive branch of government, republican or democrat, and it doesn't matter to me whether it's republican or democrat, that they enforce the law as the constitution requires to enforce the law. their credibility is on the line. >> john: we will keep following this, appreciate you joining us and look forward to future developments, i'm sure there will be many. >> thank you. >> john: fox news alert, police
11:58 am
in atlanta looking for 24-year-old deon patterson in connection with a multiple shooting at a medical building in downtown atlanta. we do not know his whereabouts, though fox 5 atlanta affiliate said it's believed he stole a car and traveled to a middle school in cobb county where he then ditched the car and fled on foot. campbell middle school is the name of the school he apparently, according to our fox 5 affiliate, drove this car to. so, sandra, police may be zeroing in on the suspect's whereabouts, which is a good thing. >> sandra: and if he's on foot, a lot easier to find him. look at this massive law enforcement effort on the ground there, they are set up everywhere, and if indeed this is what happened, this car is ditched at campbell middle

school, cobb county, the suspect fled on foot, you have to think it could be a short time from now, john, when they are able to get this guy. >> john: armed and dangerous, he is considered, clearly he is dangerous. he shot four people, killed one of them. the other three are at grady medical center in downtown atlanta. we do not know the extent of their injuries. praying for them to pull through. but police are saying if you encounter this individual, stay away from him, because it's likely he still has the weapon that he used in the shooting, allegedly used in the shooting in midtown atlanta and probably desperate to avoid getting caught by the police. >> sandra: indeed. this is the scene in atlanta, the middle of the workday, horrific thing for all these people to go going through. massive effort to find this person. call 911 if you see him or know anything. they are looking for any leads, any tips to find the suspect,

considered armed and dangerous at this hour. >> john: and reminds us again of the capricious nature of crime, you can be in an area like midtown atlanta, which i felt was a very safe area when i lived in atlanta, and you can see how much it's changed. >> sandra: let's be clear, atlanta has a lot of crime, a lot of problems just like every other city in america right now, and is a dangerous place, especially right now. i'm sandra smith. >> john: i'm john roberts. see you >> martha: thank you. good afternoon. i'm jilgillian turner in for maa maccallum this afternoon. first, police identify the man suspected of opening fire at a medical building in midtown atlanta about 12:30 eastern time. he's killed one person and hospitalized at least four others. police say 24-year-old dee
