[chanting and shouting] >> dana: anger in new york city. protestors calling for justice after a deadly confrontation between subway passengers. their pre-conceived narrative may not fit with reality. good morning. >> those protests are coming in in response to the death of jordan kneely killed on monday after boarding a train and started yelling at passengers.
6:01 am
a man identified as a marine veteran tackled him to the ground and put him in a choke hold. the marine reportedly held him like that for several minutes. >> dana: kneely was later pronounced dead. >> the man seen tackling him was taken into custody and released and not charged yet. that is igniting outrage on the left. protestors taking to the streets. look at your screen there calling for the marine to face murder charges. some democrats are echoing that sentiment and pressuring the d.a. alvin bragg to prosecute him >> dana: kneely was 30 years old. homeless. made a living as a subway performer and michael jackson impersonator. >> he had a history of mental illness and arrested dozens of times and told police he was schizophrenic. the city failed him. >> dana: this case is reigniting the debate on law enforcement.
6:02 am
many arguing his death could have been prevented if police had been allowed to do their jobs. >> this horrible tragedy was completely avoidable but it has come about because of poor policing in new york city, a stress on the police in the city not to treat what they call minor crimes as any significance, and acceptance of homelessness as a way of life. the left objecting to putting insane and mentally ill people in the care they need because they say such a thing would rob them of agency. that's why new yorkers are used to like kneely being on their trains. >> dana: laura engel has more from the new york city newsroom. >> voices grow louder, the mayor of new york city continues to
6:03 am
ask for patience while investigations move forward. some enraged by what they have seen so far and are demanding answers. this cell phone video of the deadly struggle in the subway continues to draw questions about what happened leading up to the moment a 24-year-old former marine held the man on the ground in the choke hold. witnesses he was screaming and threatening passengers. one rider told the "new york post" this. he said he had no food, he said he had no drink. that he was tired and doesn't care if he goes to jail. >> protestors marched last night from barclay center to lower manhattan shutting down parts of the manhattan bridge, spray painting the street with justice for jordan and at times clashing with police and chanting we reject eric adams for not calling this death a murder. something the mayor doubled down
6:04 am
on yesterday. >> i have faith in the criminal justice system and let the process take its place. those who believe that i should do something differently, i respect that. >> the former marine has not been charged. he hired criminal defense attorney thomas kenneth, manhattan das formal rival who ran against him for the race for d.a. in 2021. hochul says kneely's family deserves justice and we follow this in the newsroom. >> dana: more later in the show. thank you, laura. >> u.s. labor market hitting the accelerator. economy added 253,000 jobs last month. that is stronger than analysts expected. unemployment ticked down to 3.4% matching the lowest rate in more than 50 years. jacque heinrich live at the white house on how this report could impact the president's agenda this morning, jacque.
6:05 am
>> good morning, aishah. we have not heard from the president in reaction to all of this. we expect to see him a few hours from now at 11:45 and should address this. the economy adding 253,000 jobs, way, way higher than expected. also the unemployment rate ticking down to 3.4%, lowest in 50 years. these are not good indicators for slowing the economy down. what the fed has been trying to achieve has not happened yet which means those rate hikes are possibly going to continue. that's really a pivot from what we heard from the fed yesterday indicating that they were likely to consider pausing the rate hikes. not going in the direction the president wants. and while congress is locking horns with the white house on talks to raise the debt limit, this is all the more striking. treasury secretary janet yellen warned the u.s. might not be able to pay its bills as soon as
6:06 am
june 1st. the president ruled out any kind of negotiating opened the door to sit down with the four congressional leaders. that the debt ceiling has to be raised without cutting the budget. it is unlikely yellen would have sent that signal without full buy in from the white house on what it would mean for the president's next steps. the white house in the meantime has been telling half truths about what this could mean for americans with respect to the budget. listen. >> it's important that people understand exactly what this bill would mean for them. for starters, it would cut veterans benefits. that's why we saw public outcry from two dozen veterans groups when this bill was considered. it jeopardizes public safety and laying off 2,000 border patrol agents. >> in reality republicans vowed no veterans benefits would seem cuts. the same exceptions for senior
6:07 am
entitlements and defense spending and the white house is getting criticism for -- the va claimed the budget bill would mean cuts to veterans benefits and 50 house republicans have responded in kind with a letter condemning the v.a. secretary for using veterans as a political pawn. a lot of this conversation is still continuing but the white house is sticking with their messaging blaming the g.o.p. for where things stand right now and refusing to have any serious talks about what happens next. >> nothing has changed. jacque live for us at the white house. >> dana: let's bring in larry kudlow. when i last saw you, less than 12 hours ago on "special report" with bret baier we were talking about the economy, banks and debt ceiling. how do you put this strong jobs number into the calculation and what comes out?
6:08 am
>> actually, the big story here is it's not a strong jobs number because it turns out the two prior months were revised lower by a substantial amount. march was revised lower by 71,000 and february was revised lower by 78,000. that's a total of 149,000 lower reductions, which means from the number today, which is 253, actually on net you only increased jobs by 104,000, okay? that's awfully important because that's the way the math goes. so this was a sloppy number. the unemployment rate did stay down at 3.4%. one other number worth noting here, year-on-year increase in average hourly earnings, which means wages, was up 4.4%. we don't have an inflation number for april yet, dana, but
6:09 am
the cpi in march was 5%. so this looks to be another number under water where inflation is rising higher than wages. you know, the real wage decline has been going on for over two years. the length of the biden administration. it has been the soft underbelly of the economy under president biden. so again when you look at this, these revisions, which are breathtaking by the way. i've been in the game a long time. i seldom see this kind of thing. one other thing, when you get a series of lower revisions, okay, downward revisions, that's usually a leading indicator for a poor or weakening jobs market. i can't say that definitively because it is just two months. 149,000, call it 150,000, that's a huge chunk. again, the actual number, the
6:10 am
payroll number up 104,000 when adjusted for the revisions. it is not a good number. one last stat. i hate to do this to you, dana. not your favorite thing. one more statistic. i've known you for so long. anyway, weekly unemployment claims are beginning to creep up now. they are close to 250,000. that's about 75, 85,000 above where they were at the bottom. so i guess i would take away from this it's actually a softening jobs market rather than a strengthening one. >> can i ask you about the regional banks? that seems to be the headline story right now. the rate hikes that have been coming one after the other have been killing these banks. right now about half the country, half of americans according to a gallup poll are worried about their money in banks. so how does this jobs report and what we're seeing right now,
6:11 am
what happens next? do we see more rate hikes or does it pause now? >> well, you know, from my standpoint i would like to see the fed pause. i think there is a lot of leading indicators of inflation and they are all pointing down, okay? in particular, commodity markets and commodity indexes, broad commodity indexes including, i might add, an important commodity called oil. i don't know what it is this morning. it was $69 at the close yesterday. commodities are headed down. they've been falling for about a year and that means the real value of the dollar, king dollar is very strong. that's anti-inflationary. second, the m2 money supply has been falling for well over a year. it is actually in negative territory. actually two years worth. it has gone from plus 30% to minus 4 or 5%.
6:12 am
you can't ignore that. the fed does at their own peril. the third, the treasury -- stay with me. the treasury yield curve, the difference between short-term rate and a ten year bond rate is turned up side down. the short rates are now way above the long rates. that's abnormal. a healthy curve has the long rates above the short rates. so an upside down yield curve is a recession signal. crashing money supply is a recession signal, and falling commodity prices, recession signal. all of them suggest that the inflation rate, which has been gradually coming down. it has been kind of sticky but i think it will continue to come down. and i think the fed should be careful here. i don't think there is any rush. i think they should pause for a couple of months and see what is going on. i don't think they should cut
6:13 am
their rate but why not pause for a while? you are right about these banks. people are very worried. if you have an uninsured deposit you should be worried. if you have an uninsured deposit. >> dana: i try to find somebody like you to brief on the economic days and revisions are frustrating. people are trying to make decisions while it is happening. what's happening across the pond? here you have king charles. he is greeting the well-wishers and fans of his and everybody who is gathering for this wonderful weekend of celebration they will have in the u.k. just ahead of his coronation. beautiful sunny day there today and we'll be able to talk with martha maccallum live who is there ready to give us all the information that we need before the big day tomorrow. starts at 6:00 a.m. eastern on

border chief chris clem is here to talk about the situation. let's get to griff jenkins live in brownsville, texas. the pressure on the border is reaching a boiling point. >> it sure is, dana. good morning. even with title 42 currently if place the numbers are off the charts. let's get right to fox flight team and drone in the sky. on the levy behind me another large group. we've been getting over 2,000 a day since i've been on the ground a week ago. more than 15,000 migrants mostly venezuelan have crossed right here. let me show you brand-new video. our fox flight team shot with their drone overnight. look at this. you can see even when the sun goes down the large groups are there. the u.s. side is in the bottom part of your screen with the large group and migrants in the river. top of your screen there is in mexico we can show you. video we have shot exclusively in mexico on the mexico side. look here.

me on here. shout-out to my cbp family. earlier this week they helped local officials in east texas, specifically the folks arresting the fugitive killer. a shout-out to what they're capable of doing when they are allowed to do what they need to do. they support the american people. what is happening on the border. this legislation put out there we have to ask the question why did we get to this point? we have sitting senators saying we have a problem here. and i think this is a great first step. it has drawn attention to something we've been ringing the alarm for several years on. it has been slow going. they've been doing things but not enough to get this under control. we need to stop this. it is helpful and i think it will be a first step to getting us to the table. you have people from both sides of the aisle. hopefully it will get some people to start thinking of solutions.
6:25 am
maybe the house will do the same thing and add more teeth to it like shutting down the total numbers coming in here and put stuff in there that talks about ice capabilities, detention capabilities. we have to be able to get ahold of this problem. this legislation is bipartisan and most importantly it came from the ground. it was people talking to the senators. senators listening to both sides of the aisle when it comes to elected officials, community leaders seeing the impacts. that's what the american people need to know exactly the report griff jot. the video doesn't lie. look at the numbers. 9,000 arrests along the southwest border. every border patrol sector with the exception of big ben is at 100% capacity. this is a problem. >> aishah: the administration has been hearing from these bipartisan lawmakers for a while. i attended hearings from mayokas where people and democrats are calling him and the administration out saying they
