"the ingraham angle" is up next. >> laura: good evening, i'm laura ingraham. this is "the ingraham angle" from washington tonight. a growing unfathomable biden created crisis at our southern border. tens of thousands are poised to burst through when title 42 officially ends next week. now, as tens of thousands of our fellow citizens are dies on the streets by fentanyl smuggled across the border, the biden dhs has been sabotaging what is left of the country by ending all of the trump era policies that

worked to keep the border secure. secretary mayorkas has it all under control. >> the border is not open. it has not been open. it will not be open subsequent to may 11th. >> laura: bull. it's been catch and release at the border for more than two years. millions were waved through. lord knows how many got-aways there's been. it's an obscene subversion of our national sovereignty. what was president biden doing today? he went to a taco store to celebrate cinco de mayo. the people that supported the fauci approach, the vax

mandates, work from home, the school closures, masks are now bemoaning the results of their own policies. >> one in two adults in america report levels of loneliness and these levels are greater among kids. you find that loneliness has serious effects on our mental health and physical health. raising the risk of heart disease, stroke, dementia and premature death. >> laura: who would have predicted this? the lingering effects of shutting kids out of education, sports, social interaction with other kids, they have been horrific. >> we couldn't go to our first homecoming. i couldn't have an eighth grade graduation. >> if you feel if you're son was still in school he'd still be alive. you still feel that way? >> 100%. >> we're not supposed to be socially isolated.
7:03 pm
>> he would still be here. he said, mom, i just don't know what to do. that's the last thing that he said to me. >> laura: it's heart breaking. of course, we human beings are social beings. we naturally want to be communicating and collaborating with others. >> the places that used to bring people together, you know, whether it was churches and synagogues and temples an mosques or whether it was volunteer organizations in your community or whether parent associations in your kid's schools, participation in those organizations has gone down. >> laura: you don't say? we all know that church attendance was declining long before covid started. but we also know that it accelerated the fall-off and we know stories of young people, especially in blue states, who just stopped playing sports altogether after almost two years without them. biden's medical cartel chief repeatedly blames school

athletics for the spread of the virus. well, it was constant fear mongering. >> we're finding out that it's the team sports where kids are getting together, you know, obviously many without masks that are driving it rather than in the classroom spread. when you go back and take a look and try and track where these clusters are coming are coming from, it's just that. >> laura: these people advocated policies that ruined education and sports for countless children. remember, they urge mask wearing even on preschoolers. some kids today are paranoid about masks to this day. >> you think the president will ever make us wear masks again? >> i hope not. i hope not. you guys are at the age where you don't have to deal with it. >> laura: it's patronizing. it's person, yeah, k.j.b.

when children including my own struggled with forced online education. we found out last fall that math and reading scores for 9-year-olds federal between 20 and 2022 by a level not seen in decades. this year we saw similar states among eighth graders. new test results show a first ever decline in civics. again, all due to the unhi main covid lockdowns. what did our brilliant education secretary miguel cardona have to say about this? >> it's very alarming. it's disturbing. it's not surprising. 1 1/2 years ago, over half hoff our schools were not open for full time learning. >> laura: now, this has put schools in a total bind. the mental health struggles, anxiety and poor performance. it's a triple threat. >> schools nationwide have been trying to hire more staff including tutors and psychologists. with teacher burnout and a

shrinking pipeline, many schools face a teacher shortage, especially in rural areas and those with more low income families. >> laura: that's right. especially hard hit are students of color. but don't try to blame randi. >> do you regret not pressing for full school, full in-person school sooner? >> i regret covid. i regret that we didn't know sooner what was key to keeping people safe and keeping schools open. what we were trying to figure out is how to reopen schools and how to do it safely. >> laura: that woman is a complete menace. a liar who shouldn't be allowed within 100 yards of any child. today we learned that cdc
7:07 pm
director rochelle walensky is stepping down two years too late. think of all of the damage that she inflicted in tandem with her pal, randi. the truth is we knew early on that southern schools in states like nebraska, south dakota, only locked down for a short time, were doing just fine keeping schools open. but weingarten never cared about the kids. she was too busy catering to her natural constituency. the democratic party. if liberals regret anything about the covid years, it's the political consequences that some of them felt. >> wasn't the union just doing its job in advocating for teachers that didn't feel safe or do you think that their moves harmed our children? >> schools are about children. woe demonstrated that our schools were safe. we put $100 million in to retro-fitting classrooms. the learning loss is real. the union needed to work with
7:08 pm
us. they never did that. >> laura: well, lightfoot may not have lost her job if she really stood up to the unions. it's all good after the fact. but that's not in the democrats dna, is it? they're all disingenuous. all of these politicians should be forced to live with the consequences of their actions, not our kids. major blue states including in places like california, washington state and beyond, they're bleeding population. knew irs data is showing that 105,000 people left illinois in 2021. new york lost 261,785 people and $25 billion in revenue and the golden state started losing luster with 32,000 taxpayers leaving and 29.1 billion. meanwhile, florida and texas, they benefitted with a big influx of money and people who
7:09 pm
were fleeing from liberal la-la lands from new york, california, new jersey and illinois. the decline of blue lockdown states is most apparent in their cities. the lockdowns, plus the remote work option offered by esg-loving companies is killing commercial real estate. the analysis by the "wall street journal" is chilling. the u.s. office vacancy rate hit 29% exceeding the rate during the 2008 financial crisis. depressed building values could hurt cities which depends on property tax revenue and bank balance sheets. staying at home to improve your work, life balance, that may be good for the core power yoga studios nearby, but there's big ripple effects. "new york times" columnist, maureen dowd row that as i write
7:10 pm
this, i'm in the times d.c. office. the last year, there's been only a mattering of people when i'm here with row upon row of empty desks. i'm mystified when i here that so many of our 20 something news assistances prefer to work at home. at that age i would have had a hard time finding mentors if i wasn't in the newsroom. i couldn't find stories if i hadn't raised my hand and said i'll go. she didn't link the empty office problems to the d.c. government's draconian handling of the pandemic. we know that she knows the truth. back in 2020, the angle warned blue states that they'd be left behind if they did not follow georgia and florida and open up quickly. left behind they were without foot traffic or office building workers, other businesses are suffering as well. now combine that with reimagine policing? you have a recipe for disaster.

criminals begin to run the streets with impunity. retail sales are replaced by drug sales. as we saw last week reporting in san francisco, it's bad. >> when did you get hooked on drugs? >> when i was young. 16, 17. >> you want to get off? >> drugs is my medication. because i had open heart surgery. once i had that, i got addicted to like my pills. >> oxy? >> you have to get clean, ma'am. you have to get clean. >> i have to get clean. but since i've been on the street, because i just barely started using fentanyl. to me, fentanyl has been like something else keeping me alive. helps me not think about some of the trauma that i've been
7:12 pm
through. when i don't get it, i like can't breathe sometimes or have anxiety really bad. but when i have it, i immediately calm down. i immediately calm down. >> it's okay. >> laura: and even the biggest brand retailers pull up stakes because of high crime. nordstrom announced that they were leaving san francisco because of a theft problem. whole foods said they were closing meaditely. so i wendt for myself to see house it was impacting folks. more on that in moments. now it's infuriating to see these things happen to good people, but liberal policies are literally killing america. illegal aliens gunned down five in texas over the weekend. hit and runs, duis are off the charts and biden's open borders are flooding beleaguered chicago and new york.
7:13 pm
>> new york cannot take more. we can't. we're pointing the finger where it should be pointed. that's our national government. this is a national problem. there is no more room in new york. >> laura: the liberal mayors know that democrats and biden own this crisis. just like they know big city pro criminal mayors own the crime problem. but they'll never take any responsibility or point a finger at biden. they'll never do that. that would be telling the truth. they know the truth would set democrat voters free. free to vote for someone else in 2024. that's the angle. now for part three of my series, san francisco sabotage, we showed you the drugs, we showed you the crime. now it's time to see how both of those things are hurting the city and its residents economically. >> just over a year ago, whole foods opened this store. a flag ship on market street in
7:14 pm
san francisco. now it's closed. the company says its temporary, but we know what's going on. in the span of one years, 911 received 568 calls about what was happening in this store. there were assaults on employees with knives, attempted shootings, a machete, attacks almost every day. and people just didn't feel safe. this is all the result of policies that have been terrible for this city. the failure to enforce criminal law. and that's resulted in stores like target, walgreen's and others putting a lot of their toiletries behind plastic and thick plastic shields. other stores also closing like nordstrom and saks fifth closing as well here. what is the loss of retail going to do to san francisco?
7:15 pm
when will people wake up? >> even if you go to walgreen's, there's security guards at the front trying to prevent people from stealing like basic necessities. basic necessities are like boxed up. like plastic boxes. >> laura: what does it feel like when you go for toothpaste and it's behind plastic enclose slurs? >> i'm used to it. >> laura: do you get numb to it? people around the block shooting up? >> yeah, i go home at 6:00 and 7:00. i see a lot. >> laura: you want it to improve? >> yeah. i don't think anyone really likes living like this. >> laura: do you people get numb to what's going on here in the city with obviously the drugs and the crime? >> i don't know if people are numb. they're aware of it. talk about it. especially since covid really is mainly -- the shift has changed.
7:16 pm
i'm worried about the future of the city overall. >> i was here when it opened. >> laura: you were here when it opened? >> yeah, i live here. it was easy to get my milk and groceries, anything i needed. then it started closing earlier. that was a problem. and now it's gone. >> laura: how worried are you about that? how it might change the city without retail? >> i think it's going to be horrible. it only gets worse. it's been getting worse since i got here. everybody is just complaining about the crime. it's terrible here after 6:00 p.m. walking around at night. >> laura: are you afraid after 6:00? >> i can't do it alone. >> laura: the a.p. is reporting that florida governor ron desantis is going to launch a presidential bid next week. so what better time to look at where the polls sit? not just between desantis and trump but how they would fare against biden. a full download with analysis and our pollsters next. and if you're taking a multi-vitamin alone, you may be missing a critical piece...

>> i think you could say it's a two-man race. even though desantis is far back, he's way ahead of anybody else. >> you can see that between 70 and 80% of republican voters are picking either donald trump who is the big dog or ron desantis, who also gets a sizable chunk of people. i think that's because republican voters like what
7:22 pm
they've done while in office. >> laura: now, in this two-man race, trump has a commanding lead. new polls show that trump is beating desantis by 36% in both. the former new hampshire republican party chair, even noted that the former president's organizational skills adding that by comparison to the desantis people are rookies. now, for its part, the desantis team rejects that saying the machine is built, full of rocket fuel and ready to launch. as far as the polling goes, they say their candidate is the only one that can win a general. for evidence, they're pointing to a number of battleground state polls showing that trump is struggling versus biden while desantis wins all the hypothetical matchups so where do we stand? joining me now, chris wilson, pollster for never back down and robert cahally for the trafalgar
7:23 pm
group. chris, are battleground polls in this hypothetical matchup really enough to go off of right now to proclaim that desantis is the only one that can win this? >> that's the case. ron desantis leads joe biden in every single important battleground state. in fact, trump loses, again, to joe biden in all of those states. not just in those states but one of the most alarming things, numbers came out of texas from the university of texas poll that had trump down to joe biden in the lone star state. look, you can't hold texas, you probably shouldn't be the nominee. let's look at the implications of that. the ramifications of a joe biden victory, which right now not even giving joe biden texas, if it was a trump and biden race, you have a wipe-out in the electoral college similar to what occurred with barack obama and mitt romney.
7:24 pm
if that happens, you're looking at a democrat taking the house back, democrats expanding their lead in the senate, stack the supreme court, washington d.c. becomes a state. the list goes on and on the problems that are created by donald trump as the nominee. that's why it's so important that ron desantis is the nominee. i'd say that if you look at the organizations being put together by never back down, the preparation is there. when you look at the early states, iowa, new hampshire, south carolina, nevada, the desantis organization there will be very strong. >> laura: robert, you were very famous for being the only polster to correctly call trump's win in 2016. i don't think you got it right in 2020. you say that there are some things that trump has definitively going for him in these swing states. explain. >> yeah, actually we have the lowest error report in 2020 as well. a little different in the final outcome. it's easy to rely on some of --
7:25 pm
you have polls showing that trump can win the swing states and some saying that he can't. really depends who is doing the polling and what their incentive is. the university of texas never thought the republicans can win texas. i'm not going to fool with that. there's numerous republican candidates that can win this general election. donald trump is most certainly one of them. one of the things that people really upset about and worried about these days is with putin and xi and those guys getting together. made people scared, more than any point during the cold war. so if you ask simple question, would russia have invaded ukraine if donald trump was president. every one of the swing states say no. are you -- >> laura: the number 1 issue is it not the economy? it's the inflation, the prices, and the economy. that's where trump has an unbelievable record.
7:26 pm
2019, 2018 versus today, to me, that's his strongest argument to winning. what desantis is going to say -- chris, you can correct me -- desantis will say something like trump's policies were awesome and we salute donald trump. but i'm going to win this thing. i'm going to win women, i'm going to win suburban women. for that he's toxic. that's what i bet desantis will argue. so what does trump say to move these polls to the independents and the suburban win toward him to combat what i believe desantis will argue? >> well, i can't speak to what trump will do. what i can say is when one of the questions we ask, you know, are reagan test, are you better off now than four years ago. absolutely, another one of those tests where the economy is the leading indicator and people say they're better off in trump's economy.
7:27 pm
why never had two guys that have run and have a full comparison. americans are very good with a-b choices. i know some of the people with desantis and other can did will say trump has been demonized and we have a better shot. remember when the liberals liked elon musk? he speaks up for free speech. now he's a pariah. doesn't matter who the republicans nominate, they'll go after them with the same vicious vigor that they have trump. so anybody that thinks any of the other republican candidates it will be a panacea and everybody can't wait for them to get elected, that's not reality. >> laura: no. the problem will attack any republican nominee. you're absolutely right. chris, one of the things that the big donors are concerned about is the focus on the cultural issues. you know, i love what desantis is doing on the cultural issues. since the number 1 issue for the country and the independent voters is the economy, do you see desantis in a general really
7:28 pm
shifting to economic concerns and perhaps moving away from these a these issues -- i love this stuff. people that are weary of them, abortion, peter teal is one of them. he said he could support desantis but wants the focus to be on the economy. >> sure. i'm there with you in terms of appreciating what he's done and taking on capitalism and making florida where woke goes to die. but you have to look at what they did in the past. donald trump won in 2016 and ran against joe biden in 2020 and lost. what happened with ron desantis? he won a very close election in 2018. what happened to the state of florida? you saw a massive change in registration. they went from a deficit of registered republicans to a surplus of over 300,000. you have people moving in from blue states to get down to florida where it became the free state of florida. what happened with ron desantis, not only did he win
7:29 pm
overwhelmingly in 2022, he did so in a manner that swept republicans across the state of florida in to office. i'll point out, laura, he did that in the same time where we should expect a red wave to occur nationally. it didn't. there's a study by jacobson in 2023 that shows that is attributable to donald trump. where there are races in which there was not an incumbent, pennsylvania, georgia, nevada, arizona, donald trump's impact cost us those senate states. look at another study by ballard where they quantify the impact of trump's endorse meant on senate races, it could us 15 in 2018 and 10 in the house and five in the senate. the impact of the trump candidacy is damaging down to state level and nationally. >> laura: certainly helped j.d. vance in ohio. certainly helped i think in new york on some of those house races we won.
7:30 pm
but your response to those charges, robert, about what trump does down ballot. >> well, you know, it's interesting that he would say that trump is not effective down ballot. again, i'm not here to defend the trump campaign. i'm here to suggest that many republicans have a shot. in the year when donald trump lost, the republicans picked up a lot of seats in congress and didn't have the impact that everybody would assume if they lost the presidency. they won all the way down the ticket. so i mean, that's what happened last time. >> we should have won those states and he couldn't win. shows what a weak candidate donald trump is. >> laura: we're going to see. this will be fascinating. chris and robert, thanks for the analysis. these polls move and they're all over the place. this is early. so chris and robert, thanks so much. >> thank you, laura. >> thank you. >> laura: biden turns to ai for presidential answers and raymond has three wishes for out of
