independents only 36% want to see biden on the ticket. 58% say they want to see someone else. >> dana: if that's not enough of a warning sign, the same poll shows biden running six percentage points behind trump. five behind desantis. those kind of numbers have republicans pointing to a big problem for democrats. >> no president has ever had these kind of numbers and won in a second term. if i am the democratic i would be in a panic. those are dismal numbers, not just bad, they're dismal. it really shows that even democrats don't believe he has what it takes to go to a second term. >> bill: mark meredith leads a new hour live at the white house with more on this, if there is much reaction. good morning. >> there is reaction. good morning to you. the next presidential election is still 547 days away. but as you were just talking about with dana the latest polling shows the president has an uphill battle ahead of him

including with his own party. the poll took a look at the president's job approval rating. 56% disapproving. the poll showing the president losing support among black voters. he saw a major drop in support compared to a few years ago. he was at 82% in 2021. that support sitting at 52%. the biden campaign reacting to all this overnight saying we'll continue to focus on earning americans' votes, addressing the issues they care most about and defying the beltway wisdom to win a second term. later on wednesday the president will be up in new york to participate in a campaign fundraiser. while donors are sticking with him he is facing questions about his age. 81 on election day. he told msnbc last week that his age should appeal to voters, not be a turn-off. >> president biden: i have acquired a hell of a lot of wisdom and know than the vast

majority of people and more experienced than anybody who has ever run for office. i'm honorable as well as effective. >> in that same interview the president also defending his running mate, vice president kamala harris. he says she is not getting enough credit for the job she has been doing. of course, republicans have been very vocally critical of the vice president saying she has done a poor job in office especially when it comes to border issues. >> bill: trying to build her up. see how it goes. mark, nice to see you. >> dana: the same poll finds major concerns about president biden's health, physical and mental. just 32% overall think he has the mental sharpness needed to serve effectively. down sharply from 51% when he was running three years ago. a former clinton advisor, mark penn. wonderful to have you. the number is stark. 36% approval going into your re-election. your thoughts. >> when he drops here from 42 to 36 in approval in this poll,

that's all democrats who are jumping ship and saying i don't approve of the presidency he is doing. and i think we've seen for a long time the harris polling showed the same thing for a long time. people question his fitness for continued office. most democrats didn't want him to run. this poll has to send shock waves. he just announced for presidency. you are supposed to go up when you announce, not down. >> bill: you do this, too, though, right? you do the polling. your polling hasn't been this low. what did they find that all of a sudden triggered this? >> well, i think the announcement. i think the fact that he said he is running for president when less than 40% of democrats really support his re-election. remember, they rushed up this announcement. it was supposed to be in july. that would have given everyone an opportunity to see how he is doing and not freeze the field. instead he froze the field in the democratic party. everybody has to support him now.

and with numbers like this, they are looking at a potential titanic at this point unless it changes. >> dana: when you think about who might be the republican nominee, president trump obviously is the highest in the polls on that side. biden versus trump, trump over him. ron desantis not a declared candidate looks like he is going to but not yet, 42-37%. is that just people saying we would rather have a republican -- generic republican versus biden or thinking these two are the possible answer to their concerns? >> i think it's a little of both. i think this is a reflection of the low approval ratings for president biden. so he is dipping in his numbers. and the republican numbers are generally up. and i'm shocked to see trump with a 6-point lead. it says the biden re-election thing is a very risky proposition if you don't want trump to get reelected. i gave advice to the "wall

street journal" to desantis. get out of the cultural issues and get in the center. moderate conservative republicans who put romney and mccain in. you are barking up the wrong tree trying to get core trump voters. will he listen? >> bill: i was looking for the good news in this. here is the liberal patriot writing how the white working class could sink the democrats again. explain that. >> well, because that's really where the transition has been from the democratic party years ago to the republican party. let's face it, this election is really about the suburbs. who is going to be the most acceptable candidate to the suburbs? that's really going to determine the outcome. you notice when you look at the "washington post" analysis, they don't mention immigration, they don't mention crime. they barely almost wonder what's wrong with the economy? democrats don't see the full picture here. sure there are some things people think biden did well. he put in the climate change

agenda. backing a racial equity agenda. he is doing what he -- what the left wants. but even what a lot of democrats want in terms of expanding programs. on the other hand performance on the economy, crime, immigration, 40% or below. that's a problem especially when you -- >> dana: mayokas comes out all the time and says the border is secure and he says that over and over again. people aren't buying it. they have their own eyes. >> as you know, in "star wars" these are not the droids you are looking for. it is not credible. >> bill: if his voters aren't watching fox news, they don't see it. you can flip the dial and it is really hard to find. >> dana: it seems like it is working somewhere. his immigration numbers are really bad. >> crime, immigration, hunter biden story is beginning to bubble up. there is a lot of roadblocks here. look, everyone sees his age and everyone sees the question of

have to get? i think people in new york are fed up. >> bill: how bad does it have to get is the key? >> it was bad in the late 80s early 90s in new york i remember the subways you couldn't see on or off the train. they were completely covered in graffiti. when you entered the subway urn going into a war zone and we did come back from it. people said no, we're going to take control of this. then when it happened, you can't believe that people -- that they didn't see it. all the people protesting on the subway when we say from the footage of it. none of them were here and didn't see it. >> dana: they don't even ride the subway. it is ridiculous. >> bill: homelessness in california is 30% of the total number across the country. that's the numbers we have. a second topic. do you self-check out, miss perino at the grocery store. >> dana: when you go to self-cheek-out or anyplace you go if you use one of the swipe

mission. >> the additional 1500 active duty troops being dispatched for 90 days by the pentagon will join 2500 national guard troops already on the border. they are meant to act in strictly administrative roles and not to aid to law enforcement. a move used by excessive presidents going back to george w. bush. the active duty troops are pulled from camp lejeune, north carolina, a combat battalion from camp lejeune and the 93 military police battalion in texas. it will free up border patrol agents. mayokas mayokas gave this warning to migrants friday. >> the border is not open. it has not been open. and it will not be open subsequent to may 11th. >> clearly dhs felt there was a

need for the department of defense to assist so that they can continue to do their important work. secretary austin approved that request and that's what we're focused on. >> the active duty troops will not be permitted to support migrant processing or escort duties or participate in civilian law enforcement activities. they won't be responsible for property seized from migrants or have direct contact with migrants. >> president biden is sending 1500 quote soldiers to do paperwork. that's not going to secure the border. we need not 1500 soldiers, we 15,000 or to secure the border. >> most of the troops will be stationed in el paso, texas. the reason the white house has to call on active duty troops is because the decision was not taken in enough time to call up the national guard, sources tell fox. >> bill: we've seen the

reporting from el paso the last couple of weeks. that town is a mess packed with migrants already. >> dana: house republicans are teeing up a vote on a sweeping immigration bill to restart con shun on the border wall. place new restrictions on asylum seekers. let's bring in steve scalise. over the weekend and any time on air secretary mayokas says we need to pass immigration reform. never pressed to give details. is this the legislation he might get behind? >> it will be -- anybody who is serious about securing the border will support this. secretary mayokas paid lip service telling everybody the border is not open. everybody knows the border is open including people around the world, not just south and central america. we are seeing 140 countries

coming into our border. it will get worse. the bill we brought forward are things that president biden could do today. end catch and release. give our border patrol agents more tools to secure the border, not to process people coming in illegally. reinstate the remain in mexico protocol, mpp as it was known and the northern triangle agreements. those are all things president biden got rid of when he became the president and halted construction of the wall. the money is there. he could start building the wall again and do all those things on his own. he won't because president biden wants an open border. this bill to secure the border act that we'll vote on thursday shows the country how we can get secure at the border. i hope the secretary finally wakes up and says let's do it. i'm not holding my breath. we're going to act not sit on the sidelines while the crisis is already out of control and will get much worse. >> dana: so everyone has the numbers in 2021, 1.7 million people cam across. in 2022, almost 2.4 million.

nuclear power facility. it has been under russian control since the early days of the war in ukraine. watch that. >> dana: over the weekend a 24-year-old chicago police officer was shot and killed as she returned home from the city's south side. authorities say ms. preston may have been killed in an attempted robbery. no arrests have been made. garrett tenney live in chicago with the latest. good morning. >> good morning. this was just before 2:00 in the morning on saturday when officer preston was on her way home after working her shift on the city's south side when she was killed in her own front yard. at this point, police say it is not clear if the 24-year-old was targeted or if she was the victim of a robbery. her gun and badge were missing when officers found her laying in her front yard. it is also not clear why it took police more than 30 minutes to get there after the city shot spotter surveillance system

biden world preps for hunter biden fallout and says biden aides are more worried about the personal toll it will take on the president as a father. you dropped three stories last night at the "new york post." put them in one sentence. what do we need to know, miranda? >> well, again it's allegations that have been around for at least since 2018 about joe biden being involved and benefiting from his family's influence peddling scheme. we know from last week there was a whistleblower who came forward that james comer and chuck grassley in the senate seemed to be very excited about who said there was an allegation to the f.b.i. that was contained in a form with the f.b.i. from a confidential source alleging

that joe biden had received bribes from a foreign national, from the foreign country in order to change policy. don't know if those allegations are real, but that's what james comer says this whistleblower is alleging. now we find from another former u.s. attorney, this time from arkansas, that back in around that period he also brought to the d.o.j. -- in fact, to the u.s. attorney in new york, similar allegations that joe biden was involved this time in ukraine with some sort of bribery scheme. so again, jeffrey berman did nothing about this, as far as bud cummins knows and he got spied on himself. >> bill: james comer says he will talk on wednesday. we'll see what comes up and where it goes. thanks for coming on.

34 dead whales reported along the east coast. nine in new jersey alone. that disturbing number has state republican lawmakers calling for a temporary halt to off shore wind projects while further research is conducted to find out if there is any correlation. >> we only have one chance to get this right or get that catastrophically wrong. where is the harm if we pause for 30 days or 60 days in this project to see if we are going to see a continuation of the unprecedented number of whale deaths? >> state democratic lawmakers including governor murphy's office pushing back that they have haven't investigated them. there was no evidence of specific links between recent whale mortalities and ongoing surveys for off shore wind development. the murphy administration will continue to responsibly pursue its off shore wind development
