>> they seem upbeat and optimistic, but as you mentioned the clock is ticking. just nine days to go, that's a week from thursday. let's get right to where the sticking points are and what they are trying to work through, the biggest sticking point is whether the two sides can agree on the length and size of spending caps. white house wants to preserve the president's signature legislation like the inflation reduction act while speaker mccarthy wants spending cuts but not in defense.president biden issued a statement yesterday saying "while there are areas of disagreement, the speaker and i believe negotiators henry and graves and our staff will continue to discuss the path forward". speaker mccarthy had this to say yesterday. >> i think the tone tonight was better than any other time we had discussions. i thought it was productive because we both know, we have walked through this for a long time, where our differences we explained that we give a give and take of what we think would be best for moving the country

forward. >> mccarthy also said philosophical differences remain as treasury secretary janet yellen said clearly "i'm writing to note that we estimate is highly likely that treasury will no longer be able to satisfy all the government's obligations if congress is not acting to raise or suspend the debt limit by early june and potentially as early as june 1. this comes as president biden continues to give low marks on his handling of the economy the ap reporting only 33 percent of americans approve of the job he is doing even worse they find only 24% believe the economy is in good shape. where we stand on that debt ceiling clock ticking down? they are saying they are talking every day and working overnight there is no scheduled meeting right now to meet here at the white house but what's interesting i doesn't feel there is a sense of urgency right now with so few days

desantis having failed to fill the vacuum, there was a large vacuum of non-trump republicans. trump keeps gaining, the latest poll today has about 61% and republican primary which is astonishing. at the same time, desantis didn't prove capable of reaching out to all the different elements of the party. you now have more and more people who say, i could be a competitor and tim scott is a terrific person. i watched him since he ran for county commission in 1995 then he became a congressman, then a senator. is terrific for the country to have tim scott, who is a deeply committed christian, offering a vision of hope of opportunity of unifying us, i think he's going to be one of the real stars of the next two years. i think with glenn young ken does a video thinking about the future of america as opposed to the future of virginia. there is more than a little bit of a hit but i think the real

challenge for him is to do really well and off your legislative elections. he's got a pretty good argument to run for president next year. >> all of that is super interesting. the media and the democrats want to go after ron desantis as well. what you had on sunday night was the naacp warning african-americans not to travel to florida. the naacp expels florida from the union the groups travel advisory distorts the states record a take a shot at ron desantis. is this going to backfire on the naacp or will it hurt ron desantis? >> backfire and it's crazy. they can issue a warning about baltimore and new york or chicago there are a lot of big cities dramatically and more physically dangerous than any place in florida. echoes right at his strength he

brutal stabbings of four university of idaho students last call was charged with four counts of first-degree murder yesterday. he stayed silent during the arraignment, the judge entering not guilty plea to all the charges. matt finn's live in moscow idaho with more. what does all of this mean for the case against him? we know when the trial is going to take place, what else do we have? >> reporter: and heading into the arraignment we were aware of the rather unusual option

that koger had which is to enter the standing silent plea but then when it happens some people seemed a bit surprised or puzzled by it. here in idaho if the defendant enters a standing silent plea by default a judge enters a not guilty plea on their behalf. this murder case there is a gag order which is being challenged but for now attorneys on both sides cannot give statements or any feedback on what happened in court. this morning there really is just speculation about why you chose to enter the standing silent plea. it's possible that it will allow koger's team to better negotiate the prosecution and any type of deal since he could not formally entered a standard plea or could set him up to take the stand in his defense during the trial considering he did not enter a plea either way. you might recall he was given a

phd in criminology at washington state university he might consider himself savvy enough to use the standing silent plea to his advantage. yesterday during his arraignment coburg or appeared extremely alert and attentive his eyes were wide open and he answered loud and clear yeses and knows when the judge asked him questions about the four murder charges and his rights. >> do you understand the charge and count to murder and first-degree? >> yes. >> do you understand the penalty? >> yes. >> here in idaho the prosecution has 60 days from yesterday to indicate if they are going to seek the death penalty. also, coburg's attorney is asking for all the transcripts from the grand jury that indicted him on those four murder charges to be released. >> john: one thing we should point out is that idaho recently reauthorized the firing squad as a method of death penalty. matt finn, thank you, we will have a lot more on this coming. with steve gonzales whose daughter kaylee was one of the

emotional testimony in an hour from now but what's the solution? is it better vetting? as she suggests. restricting to a greater degree people coming across the border? >> yes to all the above. first of all, we have secured borders at the end of the trump administration, it was joe biden on his first day of office that cancel construction of the border wall, ordered i.c.e. not to enforce deportation orders and canceled the remaining mexico policy. that's the incentive that's causing all of this illegal migration if you make a phony assignment claim today you are automatically guaranteed of being admitted into the country you get indefinite residency, work authorization, lots of free stuff and when your claim is finally rejected by the court system years in the future you are not going to be deported because we are not enforcing deportation. >> john: 㦠>> this is the tragedy with kayla, the police when they

arrested this guy he had ms-13 gang tattoos they made one call to el salvador and authorities and confirmed there was a known ms-13 gang member the authorities to the border didn't lift a finger they didn't note the tattoo and they certainly didn't make the call to el salvador to find out is this guy dangerous? so they immediately traffic him to maryland and ultimately he ends up killing kayla. >> we know what a problem ms-13 here is this country, president trump made one of his issues to crack down on the border 㦠>> ms-13 is entering the country, cartels are entering the country we just have not far for my district in california cartel execution of a family of six including a young mother shot in the head trying to protect her child. >> speaking of children in the border, raul parties tweeted

out this video in recent hours of a young child four years old being dropped over a very high border fence in san diego, you could see in the highlighted section of the video the child being dropped overcome this as a child we don't know where the child came from but made a treacherous journey up through mexico to the border and then gets dumped over the wall by himself we don't know where he's going, who do you blame here? do you blame the cartel for bringing this child up do you blame whose evidence country who asked for the child to be brought up? the administration or all of the above? >> i blame principally joe biden and alejandra mallorca's, the cartels are paid thousands and thousands of dollars to traffic these children into the united states. the border authorities the agents tony this would stop immediately if we simply began returning these children safely home. the cartels don't give refunds the moment that the children are returned to their homes their business dries up and all the tragedy stops.

teenage boy who was killed. mayor brandon johnson facing the deadly reality following campaign promises to focus less on law enforcement.joining us now and xes reporter covering chicago justin kaufman, thank you for being here.under lori lightfoot there were 2000+ homicides, this year so far in 2023 197, these are tough for chicago and i want to give you one more statistic that really opened my eyes this morning that 56% of the black and hispanic population will witness a shooting by the age of 40. >> reporter: can you believe that? that is stunning. that's just a human stat that is stunning. chicago is right now the weather gets nice, the weekends get longer and we see more violence, this is something we've had in chicago for decades now. it's mayor johnson's first weekend and i think it's unfair

to say that it has anything to do with his administration but he has a huge litmus test coming up this weekend, memorial day weekend in chicago is traditionally one of the most violent in chicago the three-day weekend, nice weather, usually as disaster when it comes to chicago violence it will be interesting to see how the police department reacts this is usually when you get overtime, cancel days off this is when you get all hands on deck and there is a new interim superintendent under mayor johnson so we will see how it plays out this memorial day weekend. >> is there a sense of optimism in the city? >> i think there is only in the sense that it's been on the priority for mayor johnson he set up a new office of community safety, the police there have been ããhe was very supportive in his inauguration speech last week. we will see what happens. this is an area where we will see how the police react.

it's really hard to curb violence in chicago from an administration standpoint. >> dana: there was a flash mob of 400 teams devolving into some chaos we have some video of that i believe. and armed forces event in the police i would imagine are overwhelmed by this, there's other events coming up this summer in chicago how are we going to get a handle on this? >> where that happened was not even chicago it was the south suburbs, that's a major story because chicago a couple weeks ago had downtown melee and mayhem just like this the police officers and police department respondent they locked down you have dump trucks down by running part of this is in the suburbs where a lot of the police officers and departments are not equipped to be able to handle flash mobs and social media meet ups they don't have officers that are on that beat. chicago has actually adjusted

they have a force of police watching for social media meet ups but uranus he likens suburbs like tinley park or evanston you will see police having to allocate resources to watching tik tok to make sure they are watching the stories on instagram. in this case the one thing about this melee, which is a small part of it, there were no shots fired there was no guns it was a coordinated team may have a vent, which we are seeing more and more of across the city and the country. >> dana: let me give you one more topic, we don't have a lot of time, we have video was captured by independent photojournalist rebecca brannon this is where you have mattresses on the floors of chicago law enforcement officers these are migrants that have been bussed to the city. yes, crime in other cities, migrants and other cities and this doesn't look like a sustainable situation.

>> this is a bad situation for chicago. this is part of the process. they will start their process of being documented once they get to chicago by going to the police station to check in may call 311 which is the information line to find shelter and then there is a backlog and a log jam and what's happening a lot of the migrants are stuck at police stations in chicago waiting to be picked up or to be sure to other places. it's causing a serious concern, the police union of chicago has filed a civil rights lawsuit saying working conditions are poor for police officers this is not a great situation but this is also a situation that was really kind of bumbled by the former mayor mayor lightfoot now mayor johnson has spent his first week looking to find new shelters, he's looking at city college in chicago to be able to house some of these migrants. >> lots on his plate and we thank you for being with us, thank you.

we will see 17 million americans fly out of the u.s. airport from thursday through monday, they of course hoping for smooth travel for that weekend and the summers probably going to be the biggest memorial day weekend on the books. we been here all morning and able to talk to the passengers ahead of the meeting secretary of transportation pete buttigieg is having we want to ask how they feel about the transportation system. what we are hearing is overall they do not feel the department has done enough and they don't necessarily have confidence in transportation secretary buttigieg. >> i don't trust anything he says i go by experience and what i see and what i actually do i don't know if he's with the laypeople but from what i've seen it's got a little bit better but i think the pilot issue and the staffing issue is really big. >> we are going to have issues i don't think they hired the staff back quickly enough so i think there's gonna be issues all summer. >> i been hearing things haven't been going so well so i have my fingers crossed.
