policy, gas stove proposals have been unpopular, surprisingly unpopular, there was backlash against it. the administration is you have mooing ahead, but like defund police, they do not want to raise a high profile on this push against gas stoves but want to go through with it. >> ashley: i have no idea why they are pushing to ban gas stoves, it makes no sense to me. can you make any sense as to why they want to do this? >> it is not strictly speaking a ban on gas stoves, it is strangling gas stoves in so much red tape, they won't be as good, might become more expensive and they will lose marketshare significantly. natural gas is three times cheaper than electricity and despite natural gas stoves being

regulators want to go ahead anyway. >> ashley: you said proposed rules violate consumer protections in the law. explain to us. >> there is a statute that allows the department of energy to set efficiency standards. efficiency standards can't come at extent of product choice and features. while gas stoves are able to survive the department of energy, gas stoves have to cut corners to comply and features people like about gas stoves would have to go away. i believe this really is violation of the consumer protections in the law and just bad policy to not allow homeowners to get what they want in a stove. >> ashley: i think it was something like 94% of them were not compliant with this proposed rule they have, meaning 4% were

compliant. what does this mean? people have to rip it out and put something else in? >> this would be targeting next new stove and mean new stoves would not be desirable an option and there is other agencies going after gas stoves, there are bans on natural gas hookups. there is a lot going on targeting gas stoves, sum total of which could be this comes close to a ban in the years ahead. >> ashley: do you think there is benefit coming out of this hearing today? do you think it will move the needle at all in the way, direction for the people who want gas stoves and want to have that ability to have what they want in their home? >> i think shining a light on this issue will help and just last week, a different committee in the house of representatives

including the clear frontrunner former president donald trump. >> ashley: mike huckabee ran against trump in the 2016 primary. good to see you. he is behind trump. is he second in line behind trump but it is a huge gap. what does desantis need to do to move his way forward? >> well, one of the things is stay out of the way and not get branded. when trump brands somebody, it's just hard to be unbranded. that's. so things that hurt some of th candidates in 2016. i'm sitting here today because i didn't win but i wasn't stupid enough to go after donald trump and to try to take him on and call him names and enter into a spitting war with him because it just doesn't end well. and so, you know, i think desantis has to run his own race. he has got a crowded field. he has to show that he is the alternative to donald trump. but he has got an uphill climb. i think the more that we see that is just a target on donald trump's back, the harder it gets

because people are so angry that donald trump has been treated differently than any person who ever ran for president, and certainly any person who ever was president. >> todd: who do you think makes it out? is it going to be trump or is desantis going to somehow overcome to ashley wants point what looks like a completely insurmountable gap at this point? >> well, if i had to say today, i would say trump comes out because his lead is just really stunning. and in addition to that, the supporters for trump are solid. these are not people who say well, i'm kind of thinking, leaning maybe trump. these are people who are absolutely devoted, committed to voting for donald trump. and i don't see that among the rest of the field. i think there is still an opportunity for someone to be alternative but it hasn't emerged yet. >> ashley: we have plenty of time to find that out. some are saying desantis waited too long.

irs commissioner is now denying allegations that he retaliated against whistleblowers in his ranks saying, quote: the irs whistleblower you referenced alleged that the change in their work assignment came at the direction of the department of justice as a general matter and not in reference to any specific case. i believe it is important to emphasize that in any matter involving federal, judicial proceedings, the irs follows the direction of the justice department. i don't know that these allegations are even there or now they are putting the blame on the doj. >> i think this is far worse. i'm going to just say let's trust danny werfel for a moment. let's say what he says is exactly right they pulled off that investigation because they were told to by the doj. that, frankly is, far more alarming than that the irs themselves decided to, meh, let's not even look at this stuff with hunter biden. either way it's disastrous. i just want to see some people in the press corps have the
