cincinnati. i love that town. thanks for the wonderful, wonderful. how about that swing, dana? >> dana: i think he looks very well balanced. >> bill: the shot probably hit a tree. >> dana: you didn't hit a hole in one? >> bill: i heard it was the deal. >> dana: you better watch. harris faulkner is up next. here she is. >> harris: busy week for the presidential campaign announcements. this time it will be florida governor ron desantis kicking off his candidacy later today. i'm harris faulkner and are you in "the faulkner focus." the governor is trying to whip up excitement and bump former president donald trump as the top contender in the gop primary. his wife, casey desantis put out this patriotic preview. >> this is worth the fight.
8:01 am
do i have the courage? is it worth the sacrifice? america has been worth it every single time. >> harris: desantis is likely to be one of the most well-known in the pack outside of donald trump. trump's lead among gop candidates is widening since march. some top republicans including former presidential candidates say the governor has his work cut out for him. >> what's happening to desantis, he is beginning to shrink from being 1 of 2 and 1 of many. >> is there an opportunity to grow in the polls? >> absolutely. at this point president trump is way ahead so it is a daunting task for any of these other candidates. >> i think desantis has to run his own race. he has a crowded field. he has to show he is the alternative to donald trump. but he has an uphill climb. >> harris: jason chaffetz,
8:02 am
former utah congressman in "focus" now. jason, now there are seven by tonight with desantis. >> yeah, look. donald trump is clearly out in front. it feels like he is lapping people at this point but there is a long way to go. ron desantis is a serious candidate. he has the money and bank account to do it. the presence to do it. he has been building his campaign team and he has a lot to offer the country. successful as a governor. i think he is the only one. correct me if i'm wrong, but he has a military background serving as a jag officer overseas for our nation. he has been a successful governor. >> harris: let me ask you this because i know everyone immediately focuses on the obvious in the room. that is donald trump. how did they match up? is the criticism that he is
8:03 am
trump light or completely different than trump and much more woke? what sticks of ron desantis in your mind? >> i actually look at it differently. i see the stickiness of donald trump. donald trump has so many people, millions of people that want donald trump and nobody else. they probably like ron desantis. they probably like tim scott and like vivek ramaswamy and what he is saying but they are so loyal to donald trump they feel like he got screwed over by the department of justice, the woke media and everybody else and they feel like he needs to finish what he was doing for four years. on the other hand, ron desantis, his case is going to be i don't bring the drama. i get the results, you get the same quality. i'm 32 years younger than donald trump. i am the future. if i run and win i can go for two terms or eight years as opposed to just four more years of donald trump. >> harris: you know, it got nasty pretty quickly with the
8:04 am
topic of race when senator tim scott jumped into with his candidacy yesterday. two days ago he did his first interview and after that yesterday. interesting how quickly mainstream media will pounce on conservatives. "vanity fair" headline, ron desantis will announce his 2024 bid with elon musk because apparently david duke wasn't available. jason. >> it is so patently wrong, it is false, it is disgusting and why people hate politics and why a lot of good people don't run for politics. ron desantis and tim scott are two of the finest americans we have in this country. they have amazing stories. a beautiful, wonderful families. the story of tim scott rising up and his connection to his mom and everything he has gone through. ron desantis serving his nation,
8:05 am
being a successful governor and successful congressman. he has a wife, three kids. his wife is fighting breast cancer. it doesn't get any more american than that. can't they give them three minutes to actually have some balance? >> harris: they can't. it's a narrative the left isn't comfortable. when you talk about military service it was navy seal team one that ron desantis was the legal advisor for. so just that. senator tim scott, though, kind of got an interesting bounce of reality for some on the left. he also announced, as i said, his bid for the white house on monday. co-host of the view, joy behar, reacted this way. >> he is one of these guys who like clarence thomas, black republican rather than
8:06 am
understanding the systemic african-americans. he doesn't get it and neither does clarence and that's why they're republicans. >> harris: she knows what it is like to be black in america? i know there have been accusations of black face. i don't know if it happened with her. i didn't see it. those accusations are there. that doesn't count. >> yeah. they would never talk about justin trudeau or some of the other things that happened on the democratic side. it is just disgusting. these people are viable. there is a reason why the republicans are so strong. you know what? the reason they go after tim scott and they go after ron desantis is because they are a threat. they are a threat to the very narrative that they have tried to perpetuate on the american people. and ron desantis went in and won his last race by 19 percentage points after barely squeaking by the first term. the people of florida really
8:07 am
like what's going on with ron desantis as their governor. >> harris: so do the people of california because they keep moving there. senator tim scott has taken it before like this and see how desantis will handle it. here is how senator scott has repeatedly fired back at those types of attacks that are completely untrue from joy behar and outlined his own personal experiences on multiple occasions. watch. >> typically when you've been here for a couple years law enforcement officers know your face. just last year after being here for five years on the capitol and officer looked at me with attitude and said the pin, i know, you i don't. show me your i.d. either he thinks i am committing a crime impersonating a member of congress, or what? >> harris: that was a two-day series on the senate floor and
8:08 am
his full throated backing of the police department and law enforcement across the country was coupled with has he had his own experiences transparently? joy behar needs to read or go to youtube, i suppose. let's talk about the field again. how do you rise in a field like this? how do you set yourself apart and be different? >> well, look, there will be all kinds of ads, a lot of barnstorming, small meetings. people in iowa get to meet each of the candidates. i really do think when fox news hosts that debate in august, that will be a major moment. how do you break out? how do you have so many people on a stage and have an actual debate? but that is where ron desantis made his move against adam pu putnam. i was at the event.
8:09 am
ron desantis was way behind. putnam had more money and name recognition. even though ron desantis had the backing of donald trump he was still way behind. after that debate he was the clear frontrunner and he dominated from there. now, debating against donald trump will be different than putnam, believe me and such a fascinating experience. >> harris: all right. good to see you, thank you. we'll watch all of it. wait, don't go away. don't leave. fox news alert now. i want you to stay for this. house speaker kevin mccarthy is set to speak this hour after saying he is nowhere near a debt deal with president biden. just to remind you, we're eight days away from what they call the x date from the treasury department when we begin to default in the united states. the u.s. hit its 31.4 trillion debt. they hit that ceiling back in january and they've been doing
8:10 am
all sorts of financial gymnastics to get us to this point. it is now t minus 18 until the projected default date. work requirements are sticking points and spending cuts, a new editorial out says democrats, quote, stupid debt ceiling tricks accusing the white house of more spending items being kept out of negotiations. they don't want any changes. they just want more money on the left. one high profile progressive threatens that any cuts would mean big repercussions. >> i think there would be a huge backlash from our entire house democratic caucus, progressives but also in the streets. it is important that we don't take steps back from the very strong agenda that the president himself shepherded and led over the last two years. >> harris: a new poll finds a majority disagree. 60% of americans said congress
8:11 am
should only raise the debt ceiling if it also cuts spending. jacque heinrich is live with more. >> it is clear that treasury is getting pretty ansi about the lack of a deal. they started reaching out to federal agencies to see if any payments can be slid to a later date effectively postponing the x date and buying congress more time to hash out a deal. a spokesperson tells fox the outreach is necessary to get a true estimate of when the country will run out of money. meantime, mccarthy on capitol hill trying to stay optimistic but not sounding all that great. >> democrats don't want to spend less, they want to spend more. that's unreasonable when you spend more than any time in american history. i'm hopeful they come back and realize what the american public is telling them as well. >> the speaker's team said the biggest -- democrats are
8:12 am
resistant to new work requirements for some welfare programs saying the latest g.o.p. ovaritis cuts snap benefits beyond the house-passed bill and harsher than what trump tried to do. it's not being echoed by house democratic leadership that they're making a good effort. >> speaking mccarthy is beholding to the most extreme members of his conference. >> they want to end social security as we know it. >> the white house is not disavowing what's being said. >> i believe he is the leader of the democratic caucus on the house so i would presume that's a yes. >> it seems like there is a bit of divide between the rhetoric he is using and what we're hearing out of the white house. >> multiple things can happen at the same time. >> house democrats not at the
8:13 am
negotiating table trying to engineer an end run around biden's negotiation and pass a vehicle for a clean bill to raise the debt ceiling with a discharge petition. the white house denies that there is any doubt in the president's ability to lead. >> harris: great pushing back on the white house press secretary. two things can be true but not when they're oppositional. you can't say something is happening and it's not happening at the same time. they actually both can't be true. jacque, great job. house republicans taking on the biden administration's relentless green energy push including banning gas stoves. that hearing is happening right now on capitol hill. i wish i could be there. you know how i feel about it. we're watching this and we'll jump into it for any interesting moments. like let us cook our food. big backlash after north carolina's democrat governor declared an emergency over a
8:14 am
republican education bill. >> what's the emergency? parents will be allowed to pick the schools their children attend. goodness gracious. what an emergency. >> harris: more and more states are looking to give parents the right, more rights when it comes to their own children's education, the left is putting up quite a fight. power panel next. ♪ veteran homeowners. if you need cash, the last thing you want to do is spend cash just to see if you qualify for a home loan. yet, some lenders charge you hundreds of dollars in upfront fees just to apply. they keep your money even if they turn you down. call newday. unlike other lenders, at newday there's no upfront appraisal fee, no upfront termite inspection fee and no upfront water test fee. not $1 out of pocket. give us a call.

and rockland county including the crossroads hotel. the veteran advocates were misleading local officials and it turns out the eviction claims on veterans was false. more information as we get it. democrat north carolina governor roy cooper has declared a state of emergency over an education bill. he doesn't like want the republican party has done. he wants to stop a gop school choice bill. the democrat governor apparently had to get create rev. republicans hold a veto proof majority there. critics say it won't drain funds from public schools. this is political. >> this is a state of emergency for special interests who want to trap kids in failing -- he is having a temper tantrum and total meltdown.
8:21 am
him and his party are losing control over the minds of other people's children and not a dang thing they can do about it. we will empower all families with school choice this year in north carolina. >> harris: he told that governor to cry harder. a growing number of states are giving parents more rights. five states now have a universal policy which lets parents use state money to send their children to schools of their choice. nearly two dozen other states offer tax credits or scholarships. cassie, former executive director of america rising pac and cassie, i'll start with you. your top line thoughts about this governor saying wait, this can't happen here. it is an emergency. >> it can't happen here except wait. the governor sends his child to a private school. apparently the public schools are great except for my own kid. we end up finding that out about
8:22 am
so many politicians, barack obama comes to mind with his kids. the bigger deal and what has been pointed out. north carolina schools are underperforming but seven out of ten want school choice. polls across the country support for school choice high 60s, mid seven 0s. why? it is because parents are saying i want my child to go to a school that suits my child's needs and i deserve to have a say. who loses in this issue? those in the underperforming schools. often those in the poorer neighborhoods. democrats continue to tout that they are the party of the poor while pushing policies that promote unions while hurting the poor and those most in need in our society. >> harris: some of the proposals in the bill the governor calls extreme are a parent has the right to direct child's education and religious training, make healthcare
8:23 am
decisions for the child. who would be against that, david car lucci? >> the governor is taking a stance here and refreshing. this governor is term limited. not running again. he is standing up for what he really believes, the foundation of a public education. there is a place for private schools, a place for charter schools. but it is not to supplant or replace public school education. and it is great when you can get your kid into a great private school but remember, that's not mandatory. private schools can deny you. they don't have to take you and -- >> harris: make healthcare decisions for the child, notification of criminal offense against a child. that's not political but parenting and that's our job. >> when you see the governor's statement he put out a statement and spoke to the camera and said what he is worried about is the degrading of public school education. when money goes away that means
8:24 am
that extracurricular decisions get lost. >> harris: decisions in public schools won't degrade anything. republicans are calling out the president's green energy agenda. the house oversight committee is holding a hearing at the push to ban gas stoves. you know i'm thirsty to be there. they say the regulations take away consumer's choices, gop lawmakers say it puts a huge burden on average americans. >> since joe biden took office, he made clear from day one he was on a mission to abolish fossil fuels. what is more american than a gas stove? not just gas stoves, it is also targeting dishwasher, refrigerators, water heaters, fur furnaces. the biden administration is trying to make americans' lives even more expensive.
8:25 am
>> harris: what's more american than cooking your food the way you want to? here in new york, i don't know if the left checked. 39% support this, 53% oppose this. i'll go in reverse order since you were a state senator, david, how will you sell it? >> i think this is being misguided, misunderstood. biden made it clear he is not looking to ban gas stoves. what the department of energy is simply doing is -- >> harris: new york is and other places are. >> the standards are to make manufacturers have more induction stoves and electric appliances. the inflation reduction act puts in up to an $8 hundred rebate if you buy an electric stove. this has been misguided. how we reach the next generation of reusable energy. >> harris: i think of restaurants and other small businesses that maybe -- when
8:26 am
you phase things out you can't fix what you have. this forces everybody to capitulate for somebody else's vision how we ought to cook. >> let the free market decide. industry will keep up with people want. people don't want it. this is the government trying to have more control of our lives. the last topic with the governor putting unions first over children and families. this is the government putting their special interests groups and those interests over the american people. a slippery slope to get more of a stronghold over our lives. that's the big picture here. >> harris: they talk about ventilation and restaurants are mandated to have ventilation. crack a window and do those sorts of things. we don't see it scientifically being a problem now. if it were we would know. people eat every day. a second whistleblower coming forward now about how the department of justice is
8:27 am
handling hunter biden's criminal accusations and accusations of retaliation by the i.r.s. we all fear them. plus democrats still arguing there is no crisis at the border. >> republicans have spent the last few weeks fear mongering over the end of title 42. >> that is not a secure border. that is not a closed border. >> new york city is about to come a tent city. keep talking. even the governor said that. republicans are not standing down on the fight. while border communities are just overwhelmed. house judiciary committee chairman jim jordan in "focus" next.

8:33 am
you saw jacque heinrich reporting on. it didn't have to come to this. mccarthy went to the president shortly after he was made speaker. he said 97 days it took president biden to even approach the topic of the debt ceiling, what this nation owes and keep us from the brink of default. this is on the democrats now because you had a democrat president who sat back wherever he was away from this topic while the republicans leaned in. mccarthy doing something that critics said might not be able to be done. you might not get everybody in your party together. he got enough. and they passed a bill and now it sits. the president, you know, republicans and the people that he has delegated to come to the table with republicans. the president is saying we don't like spending cuts. we don't want work requirements for benefits.
8:34 am
when the house speaker steps up, we'll take it live and it could be at any moment. a second i.r.s. whistleblower has come forward now. he sent documents to congress saying they show the i.r.s. purged the entire investigative team into hunter biden's tax fraud and related crimes. the new whistleblower also says the i.r.s. kicked him out without explanation last week. the agency denies the claim saying the i.r.s. is deeply committed to protecting the role of whistleblowers and there are robust processes and proper shead yours in place to protect them. we take any issue involving whistleblowers seriously. nancy mace encouraging others come forward, talk. >> when you hear stories about the whistleblowers in the i.r.s. and one being fired for no good reason, my message to anyone at the i.r.s. today or anyone in the administration, if you have something to say, if you've seen something with the hunter biden
8:35 am
investigation and want to talk to the oversight committee we'll protect you. we'll protect every whistleblower that comes forward into this investigation. if the f.b.i. and d.o.j. won't do their job, we'll do it for them. >> harris: a pair of op-eds weighing in. one says fresh evidence justice is sweeping biden family crimes under the rug. another warns i.r.s. cover-up of hunter biden could be scandal that sinks a presidency. republican congressman jim jordan of ohio, chairman of the house judiciary committee and subcommittee on the weaponization of the federal government is in "focus" now. first of all, another whistleblower comes forth. tell us what's at stake here for biden. >> fundamentally the agencies can say we're treating whistleblowers the way we're supposing and protecting them. we had three of them come testify last week in front of the select committee telling us how they've been retaliated against. the second individual at the
8:36 am
i.r.s. retaliated against. they can say whatever they want. we see what's being done to these individuals for simply coming forward and telling us the truths. they are being retailiateed against. it is a further evidence of how these agencies have been turned on we the people. turned on the american citizen. that's what we are focused on doing, speaker mccarthy and the republican majority in the congress. >> harris: from a 37,000 foot view of this they chilled an investigation. it is one thing to what you are saying break the law and put pressure on whistleblowers and retaliate against them. and then adjacent to that is to just chill the pursuit of justice. >> of course. of course. to chill speech. to chill first amendment and to chill people from coming forward and talking to congress. what they did to the three people last week and now the folks at the i.r.s. for coming forward and telling us the truth is not how it is supposed to
8:37 am
work. i think there are so many good people in our federal agencies, i think they will still come forward and tell us the truth. we would not know about the school board issue, we wouldn't know about the radical traditional catholic memorandum. we wouldn't know about these things but for brave whistleblowers who came forward and now being retaliated against. we will do everything we can to protect them as congresswoman mace said in your clip. >> harris: i mean, i had forgotten, just didn't have present in mind how many times this is happening now where talking about putting undercover f.b.i. agents inside certain christian churches. it is anti-american, illegal. but sur up >> snitches inside the parish and church looking to do that. the way they define radical traditional catholic if you are
8:38 am
a pro-life catholic, they defined you as extremist. it was signed by the chief division counsel at the richmond field office signed off on it. it is scary. they had a course-in-law school on the constitution and first amount but signed off on that memo. that's what is so alarming. >> harris: chairman jim jordan in "focus" today. so glad to have you. thank you. we are now going to get to another breaking news story this hour. the rally in support of daniel penny in new york city. speaking right now a local county executive from nasa. let's watch. >> it's pretty clear that daniel penny did nothing wrong, so i'm here today to lend my support, because of my concern for the
8:39 am
tens of thousands of nasa county residents who come into manhattan every day. we need a district attorney in manhattan that upholds the law, that values law-abiding citizens over criminals. with that, we would like to hear now from city council member vickie paledino. vickie. >> good morning, everybody. how are you? once again i find myself in a situation where i have to get behind a mic and start to talk about how somebody with mental illness and the system has failed them. this situation is certainly a sad one for all involved. it is sad for mr. neely who has been failed by the system that should have gotten him off the street and gotten him the mental services that he deserved and desperately needed. it is sad for all new yorkers who are continuously victimized
8:40 am
by those like mr. neely. it is sad for mr. penny, who took the action to protect the people who were threatened on the train that day. mr. penny served our country, his instincts were to protect and defend. those instincts carried over onto the subway that day when he took action while others stood back and took out their phones and recorded the event. mind you, the people that assisted mr. penny were made up of many different races. i stand with mr. penny. he does not deserve how he is being treated. this certainly was clearly self-defense and defense of the people that were threatened that day on that subway. i pray that mr. penny receives a fair trial in a part of
8:41 am
manhattan where we have an overpoliticized d.a., alvin bragg, who puts criminals over law abiding system every day. the system failed neely. penny needs to get the free trial he deserves. i stand by the veterans. i serve on the veterans committee and this is what it's all about. fair and equal, all the way around. neely gets the help he should have gotten and penny gets the trial that he shouldn't even be prosecuted for. this is unnecessary. thank you very much, everybody. [cheers and applause] >> harris: and you see it there, tyrus is with me for the breaking news. that was new york city council. she serves on the veterans committee. you see all the military
8:42 am
veterans around. daniel penny getting this sort of support and if you could widen the shot. we don't have control of it from here. there is a counter protest going on behind saying justice for jordan. and you heard vickie talking about jordan neely and saying look, he was let down by the system but you see people like that every day. somebody has to protect the citizens from those people. that's what she said. tyrus, your thoughts. >> first of all, it was an eloquent speech and i thought she captured what a lot of people are feeling. the ugly ness that race has nothing to do with it. if this man was any other shade of color we wouldn't have this conversation. that's what is the upsetting thing about it. because he is white and stopping what was -- he was saving people's lives potentially and we're only having this conversation. shame on the media. the first question asked when he
8:43 am
does his interview, are you a white supremacist? that's what it all comes down to. nothing to do with anything else. all these groups they love to exploit us and fighting for us but they aren't. they're fighting for themselves and using it to exploit and get on tv and make money and get donations and it is disgusting. >> harris: now let's go to the house speaker kevin mccarthy talking on the debt talks. >> i went down to meet with the president right after becoming speaker as you know february 1st. i said let's sit down, let's work together. the democrats they could have lifted the debt ceiling prior to me becoming speaker. they knew the outcome of the election already. they knew we were taking power. they passed an omnibus bill but decided not to do the rising of the debt ceiling even thief they thought people should raise it cleanly. i spoke to the president. we won't raise taxes because we
8:44 am
have more revenue coming in to our coffers at any time in american history. the problem is the democrats have been in power and they increased the amount of spending to the highest level we've ever had at any time in american history. especially to gdp. now we have the highest debt at any time in american history. i think it's common sense, reasonable and rational that we spend less next year than we spent this year. every household would do this. we have money that sits out there, covid that hasn't been used. we now know the damage that the democrats have done in the majority when they spent that extra $6 trillion. it brought us inflation harming every family, more dependent on china, created three of the largest four bank failures in american history in the last couple of months. we cannot continue down this path. the president waited 97 days, not even talked to me.
8:45 am
he could have spoken to me and said we're wrong on the other angles but he didn't. now we're eight days away from biden having to default. i don't want that to happen and that's why the republicans in the house in april lifted the debt ceiling with common sense, sensible things that pulling the covid money back, work requirements. they let people go back to work. help our supply chain and make us less dependent on china and people working and paying into social security and medicare making those entities stronger and making us stronger in the energy field where we cut the red tape to build things in america again putting people back to work. that's reasonable and rational. it sits in the senate. if the president waits too long he can always take that up. >> negotiations, has there been progress? >> there are differences we know where it's at. you have to spend less than you
8:46 am
spent last year. it is not that difficult to do. but in washington somehow that is a problem. they have increased spending with the democrats in the majority on discretionary spending by more than 33%. no household can afford to do that. we can find ways, we can eliminate that. the president eliminated a lot of places we can't talk about so i got a short area to do it. we found a reasonable way to do it. it is not that -- look, i think we can make progress today. i'm hoping we can make progress today. >> what do you say to those who believe you can't get to yes because so many of your conference won't accept anything less than the bill you passed. >> they are wrong. you underestimated the whole time. i will never give up for the american people. can we get to yes? yes. we passed a bill. >> you need a bipartisan bill now. can you get to yes on a deal? >> you just i depadentified the
8:47 am
problem. no democrats. nothing happened in the senate. i'm not a senator and don't control the senate. why didn't they pass something? the president didn't talk to us for 97 days. don't blame me for reaching out to the democrats for begging the president to meet with me, trying to find it. don't blame us, republicans, when we put a reasonable bill together that we actually took democrats' ideas. when we put spending for government and increase is 1% each year to cap it so the slow growth of government so the economy can watch up, that was a democrat idea. when we put work requirements in to help people get a job, that's something senator biden voted for and president clinton signed into law. that was a democrat-supported idea, too. it's not my fault the democrats today have become so extreme, so far to the socialist wing that they are now opposed to work requirements.
8:48 am
that they are now opposed to saving $1 less than you spent the year before. that to me is the problem are the democrats. >> the white house says they're trying to meet you halfway. at this stage of the game since you are at loggerheads, what are the off ramps? >> to solve the problem to spend less than we spent last year. it is not that difficult. they still want to spend more. you cannot do that. no household would do that. i explained this before. >> they say the plan is unreasonable. >> they don't have a plan. they never passed anything. you can't spend more money next year than you spent this year. the debt ceiling so the american people understand is having a credit card. you raise and hit the limit so year after year you just kept raising the limit so you are paying more interest. so now in america $0.17 out of every dollar that comes in just goes to interest. now you owe so much on your

credit card you have to pay it. but you owe more than you make in an entire year. now for america, we are more on our debt than our whole economy is worth. 20% more. so should you just raise the debt limit or should you think let's eliminate some waste? if we had spent money, billions of dollars for a pandemic that money has sat there for two years, pull it back. if we can have a provision to help people find jobs, let's do that. if we can find a way to cut red tape to let people go back and build things in america and make us energy independent and not beholding the china. let's do that. that's all we're asking. we are being reasonable. >> the democratic votes probably in the house, definitely in the senate. a democrat in the white house. why not offer a single concession beyond saying we are not going to default? >> we've offered a lot of concessions. the cap on the spending is a
8:50 am
democrat idea. the work requirement was a democrat idea. the -- i can't help it if the democrats have become so extreme and now is the party of bernie sanders than the party where joe biden was elected. joe biden is the president of the united states. he is the head democrat. but if aoc and bernie sanders will run the party that's not my fault. i'm not sure bernie sanders is a registered democrat. >> if the president is not willing to -- >> the premise of your question is all wrong. when have i ever said you have to agree to 100% of what i want? all i ever said to the president from february 1st, let's talk. there is only a couple things that i will not do, mr. president. i will not raise taxes. why? because we are bringing more revenue in even to the gdp. not just the 50 year average but
8:51 am
the history of americament only two other times have we brought in 20% of the gdp. 1944 and 2000. i will not put a clean debt ceiling on the floor. why? because we've spent more than we've ever spent before and have the highest debt we've ever had before. i don't think it's right. let me finish the question. then i said to the president but everything else is on the table. for 97 days he wouldn't talk to me. so we passed a bill. we're not getting everything in our bill. i am negotiating with the president. we passed a bill that raised the debt ceiling. if i did what you are saying we wouldn't be talking. i'm sitting and sending our negotiation team down with theirs. their team is highly respected on both sides of the aisle. they know this house and senate well and i know together -- maybe you discounted me, too. i didn't win speaker on the first vote. it took 15 rounds. you know what i think we're
8:52 am
stronger for it. probably we didn't solve this problem on the first negotiation but it took as 97 days. i firmly believe we will be able to get it done. >> they said concessions was the raise the debt ceiling. so within the room there, what concession are you willing to give in order to save the cone me? >> i'm willing to make america stronger, to curb inflation, less dependency on china and spend less than we spent the year before. when we're elected, the power is loaned to us from the american public. who is representing them? it is not my responsibility to represent the socialist wing of the democratic party. if they cared so much they would have passed a bill. they would have done something on the border. it is not my fault they won't take action. it is not my fault that the president would not meet with me for 97 days. i'm sorry, but the moment he was
8:53 am
willing to meet with me i have been there each and every day and i firmly believe we will get and solve this problem. >> mr. speaker, how much time will you give your conference to read the gut feeling once an agreement is reach? >> 72 hours. >> [inaudible question]. >> ask your question. [inaudible question]. >> first of all i don't think there will be a default and i don't see how you would blame republicans. if there is any blame republicans have, we're the only ones who acted. if the american public -- if they get rewarded for not taking action and ignoring the problems the democrats will win that award every day. they did it for title 42 on the
8:54 am
border, inflation, they did that with the debt ceiling and told us we shouldn't talk. i'm sorry, if you want to blame republicans for solving problems, we'll take that blame. i'm not -- the only thing i look at, if the democrats control the senate and they control the white house and they wouldn't even do a bill or communicate, i don't think i have to say who is to blame. if the republicans have passed a bill that raised the debt ceiling, did it in a responsible, sensible way, i think the american public understands that. let me tell the american public i will not give up. we won't default. we'll solve this problem. i will stay with it until we can get it done. but let's be honest about this. we have to spend less than we spent last year. it is not my fault that the democrats cannot give up on their spending. and you would think you have the most revenue in the history
8:55 am
coming in. but when the democrats were in power they spent the most money. so we have the most expenses going out. it is not a revenue problem, it is a spending problem. the highest amount of debt. don't you think it would wake them up to the sensible? i just heard on cnn that 60% of americans believe the debt ceiling should only be raised after you found savings. so to your question, your question, i think we're representing the american public and that's what we'll continue to do. i have to open up the house. appreciate spending time with you. we'll continue to keep you updated as we go and i look forward to the days ahead. thank you all very much. >> harris: all right. so that's the speaker of the house saying i'm not going to give up. i will ask my team. pop up the graphic he just talked about. he is right about this. he is with the american people.
8:56 am
60% say that they want to see spending cuts along with a debt ceiling raise. they don't want a clean debt ceiling. he says he doesn't want it and won't go for it. where is president biden? hopefully we'll see later today. he said they are set to meet later today. there were no details given on that. i will try to get some with his team. tyrus remained with me. he has some thoughts on this. there are people right now that are doing what? >> panicking. and going nuts. if you are a federal worker and you don't get paid what will you do? worst part of all we saw the last speech the president gave. at the g7. he is negotiating? he can't get a sentence. there is no meeting. 97 days it took and we're still not there. that's the closest to an explanation we're willing to do our part. when he still hasn't spoke with the president yet? he can't. this is where the issues that we see in front of us every time he
8:57 am
comes out is coming to hurt the american people. it's the american people that really will feel it. you said a great point. they have to go out and get second hand jobs to payday care. >> harris: they have to start looking for those jobs now. as a military brat i know government workers still in my life. when paychecks stop flowing you can't wait until the day -- most people are in the hole for a check. >> you owe money, oh, just get it when you can. >> harris: the daycare issues are real. the pandemic really broke us. we came back into the workforce and there are particularly women and people of color who need that help just to know i'll drop my kid right here and go work my job. they want to work. work requirements aren't necessarily offending anybody. millions of people are working. >> a lot of us diminished savings during the pandemic and went through hard times.
8:58 am
just when they catch their breath everything went up, gas, eggs, electricity and now you won't have a paycheck until these guys figure it out when they aren't sitting at the table. >> harris: one thing we saw from the house speaker here and it seemed to be a rather guarded look at this. you have to be now. you have to get sober. he talked about the 97 days he tried to meet with the president on this issue and it didn't happen. now he is saying look, that side will take the blame but push that aside, we have to get this done. politics -- >> this day in age when no one is accountable. the blame. how about taking the hurt, the american people. they don't care about blame. it is a news cycle. people getting hurt please remember this when it's time to vote. >> harris: thank you for being with me on a couple news stories. fleet week officially kicks off today with a ceremonial parade of ships.
