10:00 am
this evening and a lot of great guests. i'm going to skedaddle and get preparing for that. thanks to everyone. do not forget to dvr the show. now here is "america reports." >> sandra: we'll be watching, kayleigh. the fight over gas stoves making its way to capitol hill as house republicans put the biden administration highly controversial plan on the front burner, calling it an assault on americans. >> john: two energy department officials asked to testify chose to skip out on the grilling from the panel. what excuse are they cooking up to stay off the hot seat? charles payne to sound off on that. >> gamble, if i were advising desantis, i think it's too big of a gamble. >> you are seeing his lack of political skills and lack of political judgment and maybe desperation. >> idea of announcing on twitter, i'm old and i'm ok
10:01 am
being old. do that on television, ok? i said to see you do it on television. i don't want to dislike you. i can't help it. >> sandra: begin with the media writing off ron desantis's bid for the governor even before he joins the primary field. i'm sandra smith in new york. a lot of puns off the top alert there, but we do have a hot show coming up. >> john: yes, no question about that. all right. let's get cooking here. john roberts in washington. this is "america reports." after months of speculation, and several visits to early primary states, ron desantis will make it official not with the usual campaign kick-off rally but in a live audio only interview with the ceo of twitter, elon musk. >> sandra: we are just hours away from that. marc thiessen standing by whether desantis's entry will shake up the race and peter
10:02 am
doocy with the naacp growing war with desantis. how will desantis's rollout play out tonight? what are we and -- anticipating? >> from hot and humid miami, a bit of a different campaign rollout from what we have seen from some other republican candidates in the race. again, the donor event is going to be private, expect a twitter audio conversation and on the fox news channel later tonight. i would imagine also see a campaign video and campaign website launch later on as well. governor desantis has certainly been generating a lot of buzz, he's been dropping hints for months that he was getting ready to enter the presidential race. made early stops as you referenced in the early primary states in iowa and new hampshire and a household name during the pandemic as he pushed back
10:03 am
against mask mandates as well as the effort to reopen businesses and schools sooner rather than later. more recently he's been combatting what he says is a woke agenda and feuding with disney, which of course has gotten a lot of attention. former president trump already lashing out at desantis, though, calling him disloyal for challenging him in this race. trump's team trolling desantis on social media. former u.n. ambassador nikki haley is also attacking desantis, calling him a trump echo chamber and attacking him specifically on foreign policy, saying the governor has yet to show enough support for ukraine as it battles russia. the tim scott also on the campaign trail making his first stop in iowa after he announced on monday. the senator's telling team telling fox he's raised at least two additional million dollars, he already had a sizeable war chest. he is set to head to new hampshire tomorrow. no doubt bit, all eyes on florida for governor desantis as
10:04 am
the campaign rollout officially gets underway. we expect more events in the day's ahead after the memorial day weekend and looking to find out when he charters the jet to head to iowa soon enough. >> sandra: thank you, mark. >> john: as we await ron desantis's announcement, he has yet to comment on naacp warning black americans not to travel to the sunshine state, but peter, doesn't the white house usually avoid getting into topics like this citing the hatch act? >> yes, they do, john, but because they are carefully scripted comments do not speak to potential outcomes of election, officials here feel free to tee off on florida. >> i'm not going to comment on travel advisories specifically but i'll say this more broadly, republicans in florida have attacked diversity, they have attacked inclusion efforts,
10:05 am
limited the teaching of black history and launched attack on lgbtq youth, immigrants, women's reproductive freedom. >> republicans are calling it unfair and not just desantis. byron donalds backs donald trump. >> the third largest population of black people in any state happens to be in florida. floridians, especially black floridian, all floridians are starting businesses, kids are thriving in schools, they can live their lives free from government overreach. >> governor desantis has scripted everything he has done and said the last several months so this controversy would be part of his plan, john. >> john: peter doocy with the latest from the white house. thank you. sandra. >> sandra: marc thiessen, former speaker to george w. bush, fox
10:06 am
news contributor. marc, walk us up to tonight, what should the announcement look like to get the most attention for him and his campaign. >> i think the way we need to look at this, there are two gop primaries. there is the gop primary for the nomination to challenge joe biden and then there's the gop primary to challenge donald trump and right now desantis is receipting that gop primary, and they have to fight it out, one person has to emerge to challenge trump or else it's like 2016 all over again when he presided, one with the plurality, never reaching above 50% until the new york primary. desantis is leading in the primary and a reason for that. after the 2022 midterms, republicans were told essentially you have to choose between two different types of republican candidates. forward looking, reform-minded governors who deliver results for their people and appeal to swing voters and the populus who appeal to the maga base and maybe they don't have to choose.
10:07 am
desantis is kind of both. populous, taking on disney and the woke agenda and delivering results for florida citizens. since he won re-election, he's passed a raft of bills, including the most expansive school choice bill in the country, taken on lawsuit reform, taken on the trial lawyers, dei in schools, a whole list of accomplishments. delivers punches to the left but results for the right, it's appeal in a republican primary. >> sandra: some of the glossy new ad ahead of his big announcement. listen. >> is it worth the fight, do i have the courage, is it worth the sacrifice, america has been worth it. every single time. >> sandra: making the case that the battle for america is worth the fight. we heard from ron desantis there, meanwhile the media is going after him, marc, including
10:08 am
calling him a racist, this is "vanity fair," and he will announce with elon musk because apparently david duke was not available. a tweet from hillary clinton, ultra maga florida is not safe for people of color. lgbtq+ people or multi-billion dollar corporations. are these attacks, these racist going to work, marc? >> no, and it just shows they are afraid of him. they are worried he could actually beat donald trump and take the nomination. the democrats think the best person to run against is donald trump, they think he's the one that they can beat the most. they spent tens of millions of dollars in the 2022 midterms backing maga candidates in republican primaries because they thought they would be easier to beat. they are worried about desantis. and it's a pretty wide open field in the republican primary. if you look, there was a cbs poll, only 24% of republican
10:09 am
voters say they are only considering donald trump, 20% say they are not considering trump and 49%, the majority, say that they are, or near majority, said they are deciding between trump and other candidates. that means 76% of the republican vote is up for grabs and so desantis can make a good case he's the best person to challenge trump and beat biden. and tim scott is an i mpressive person, we have a wealth of candidates to carry the banner. >> sandra: not just nikki haley, here is her ad campaign mocking him for copying donald trump. >> make america great again. >> make america great again. ♪♪
10:10 am
>> sandra: she's ridiculing the florida governor as a copy cat of donald trump, marc. final thought. >> i think that's a pretty bad strategy, i'll tell you why. donald trump has 80% approval in the republican party. a lot of republicans like his policies even though they are not sure he's the guy to win the race. that they think they understand he's made himself very unattractive to swing voters and the election will be decided by a few hundred thousand swing voters. most republicans say i want an echo of trump, i like trump's policies, i like the low taxes and the abraham accords and killing soleimani and the great things he did in office. they are concerned about his temperament and his ability to win. i don't think going after him as an echo of trump, a lot of republicans want an echo instead
10:11 am
of trump. >> sandra: marc, thank you. p john, of course there is also the naacp taking on desantis ahead of his official announcement tonight. they took this extraordinary step as we know issuing the travel advisory to florida in response to his policies that some have criticized as discriminatory and anti-black as you heard from the media, as well as hillary clinton. >> john: saying it's dangerous if you are a black american to visit the state of florida. meantime, as pointed out, there are a number of african americans in the state of florida who are in business, who are doing quite well. employment is robust there as well, and i guess a lot of people are saying it's hypothetical for the chairman of the naacp to be living in tampa but at the same time issuing the naacp, not him himself, issuing the travel warn.

scene searching for madeleine mccann, looking for a reservoir for any traces of the 3-year-old british girl who disappeared 16 years ago now. nancy grace, host of "crime stories" on fox nation. divers are searching the waters and police are searching the banks of a reservoir. this is some 30 miles away from where she went missing in 2007. nancy, at this point, 16 years later, what are they looking for? >> well, you are right. this is the first major search regarding the maddy mccann disappearance in nine years. we have suspect number one christian brukner in jail for the rape of a 72-year-old woman. many people believe he took maddy. now, the authorities there get information from a tipster that had enough detail in the tip that they think it's very serious. why this man-made reservoir,
10:19 am
because this is a place where brukner vacationed. he would go there in his vw camper and based on photos and other information they have found a spot where he would camp near where he would park that vw, and they are doing a no holds barred search. they have divers, and i can tell you in water like that, i've dived in water like that, sometimes you can't see in front of your own hand. they have drones, they have scent dogs and they have blocked off miles around where they are searching this reservoir. they are looking for her pjs she was working with eyore on them and winnie the pooh, and looking for ration that may have something to do with her disappearance and hate to imagine for what reason rags were used in maddy's disappearance. >> john: i want to put up an aerial photograph of the area, this is a substantial area they
10:20 am
are searching. i measured it out roughly. the reservoir is about 1.1, 1.2 miles long, and at its widest part, two-thirds of a mile wide. i mean, they have a tremendous amount of territory and terrain that they have to search there, and again, after it's been this long, how much of anything would be left? >> john: realistically speaking, it's very hard for tracker dogs, scent dogs or cadaver dogs unless there was a speck of the pj or rags they have mentioned still there. now remember, this guy, christian brukner, had over 8,000 images of child porn on a disc buried underneath a pet dog. is it possible that somewhere there there is evidence buried

striking and eerie similarities. we go to moscow, idaho, we go to the crime scene, we follow the route that bryan kohberger took the night of the route, from the crime scene, 45 minutes all the way back to his place, which was a 10-minute drive, by the way, and we identify the similarities. we know that kohberger was a student of crime with unusual ties to btk, bind torture kill, and ted bundy. and we also speak to two of bundy's female survivors and kohberger also two female survivors that describe life before, during and after the attack. >> your reports are always fascinating. nancy grace, we'll be looking for that, "parallels of evil, bundy and idaho killings." thanks for joining us,

republicans calling that proposal government overreach. let's bring in charles payne, host of "making money." i don't know how it can be seen as any other way. are we coming for our gas stoves, what's happening? >> they are coming for everything, coming for everything, and gas stoves are a part of everything. and you know what's interesting, when the stories bubble up, it's like who, us, no, are we were not thinking about that, and later they push it through and then a comment aren't you guys worried about other things other than this or that? no, we are not, it comes under the umbrella of government overreach. >> nothing else going on here. i wonder, what happens with all the other gas stoves, right? are they going to let you keep the gas stove if you have it and this is only if you build a new apartment building that you have to -- there are already restaurants taking issue saying we won't be able to maintain the quality of the food without the gas stoves. >> the reason it's going to
10:31 am
happen, california has 70% gas stoves, new york, 69%, and they are going to push it through and what they do with everything. car standards, some of the crazy things that we are doing with the automobiles, you push it through and the states with the large populations and all of a sudden the manufacturers have to see to it the large states are doing and if you have a gas stove, it's probably going to be the last time. probably the last person in the family with one and it's a shame. a nation of option, a nation of free markets, we have fewer and fewer options almost every single day and that's un-american. >> sandra: look what happens with the dishwashers when they go green, they don't get the dishes as clean. look in the shower, you get the green shower head, you don't get the pressure and the shampoo is left in your hair. nothing is more telling than the empty chairs at the hearing room. biden officials that chose not to attend because the decision

is not finalized. i mean, these are department of energy officials, they were invited by republicans to testify at this hearing about this proposed gas stove regulations and the rules, but they are refusing to appear, charles, according to a gop aide telling "washington times." saying they are not attending because the proposed rules have not been finalized. but the empty chairs are something. why not just show up? this is something they believe in. >> it's arrogance. it has been finalized, it's just not official. so, they are using the wrong words. in their minds it's finalized, done. they are going to ramp it down our throats along with everything else. they are going to control our behavior, and this sort of single -- this administration, this movement, is all about one thing, the climate gods and bottom line and everything under that it's finalized, not
10:33 am
official but final. >> sandra: the energy official, the energy secretary for the biden administration who laughed when she asked what the plans are to increase oil production in this country. she said this on the gas stove ban. listen to granholm. >> there's no ban on gas stoves. i have a gas stove, it is just about making the existing electric and gas stoves and all the other appliances more efficient. it is a proposed rule. we absolutely consult with industry on it. >> sandra: ok, ok, see where that goes. meanwhile, mccarthy seems optimistic they are going to get a deal done, pop up the dow, off 232, markets are in a wait and see. what do we need to know? >> the markets are finally, finally acting, reacting. they had not until yesterday at about 2:00 and and then interesting, 2011, everyone says we don't want to repeat, seven trading days before the x date, the market fell apart, we were
10:34 am
down like 11% in two sessions, 1 or 2 sessions. so, we are starting to go down that slippery slope in the market. i like what kevin mccarthy is saying, i like that he keeps coming out to the mics but have to wait for the deal. it will -- the seeds are sown so that we'll have one -- we could have a session we are down 5% in one session. we don't want that, obviously. that's possible at this point because everyone is on pins and needles. >> sandra: larry kudlow will join us with his update next hour and he's got mccarthy on i believe tonight. >> great guest to have today. >> sandra: charles, thank you very much. >> john: looking forward to that. meantime, a new warning for the nation's top doctor about the risks of social media and children's mental health. the surgeon general recommending families create media plans to set boundaries for social media use. let's bring in dr. marc siegel, fox news contributor and professor of medicine at nyu

langone medical center. how toxic is social media to young people? >> very toxic. and as you know, i spoke to the surgeon general and interviewed him and he raised my eyebrows on a couple of things. when kids use more than three hours a day, and we have older kids and i think parents are saying now in the survey that parents are much more worried now than they were 20 years ago. when you have more than three hours on social media a day, you double or triple your chances of depression. and anxiety and you get sucked in and what the surgeon general said to me i was not aware of is that basically researchers have been trying to get technology companies and social media companies to give out information, you know, how addictive is this, how much cyber bullying is going on, how sexualized is this, how much violence and they can't get the data to figure out how to make

ago. >> i will not put a clean debt ceiling on the floor, why? we have spent more and have the highest debt. >> john: the white house is pushing back, and the game of joe biden appears to be push this thing toward the deadline so that republicans either have to capitulate on a lot of his demands or face the consequences of tipping over into default, which he would use to hang around your neck. >> he might, but if he does that, john, that will be the first president ever to default, and it will be joe biden's default. the house under kevin mccarthy's leadership has passed a debt ceiling solution which by the way we had 218 of our members support. i want to remind people that every democrat in the house voted against raising the debt ceiling when we had that vote. so kevin mccarthy has been working, trying to get this president, the white house to
10:46 am
negotiate for months. i mean, since january. finally got him to at least pay attention three weeks ago, but there has been no urgency, john. the problem is with the white house, you got the president who leaves the country, you've got a senate who leaves the district of columbia. they are taking time off right now, away from washington. this crisis, which janet yellen says could be as early as june 1st, and she's given some mixed messages. there are a bunch of us who would love to see her math, but we have to take her at her word and the speaker is as early as june 1st. republicans have been willing to work with the white house, there has not been any urgency. >> john: hakeem jeffries is blaming the speaker, saying it's my way or the highway. >> that is not a road to a bipartisan resolution.
10:47 am
that is an effort to take this country on a reckless legislative joyride to a dangerous default. and that is why america is in this situation right now. >> john: he's saying the speaker is not willing to negotiate, but it seems like he is. >> you know, last week it was republicans are cutting veterans benefits, which was not true. the week before, or this week it was it's the 14th amendment, i mean this is democrat desperation time. jeffries has a job to do, unfortunately he doesn't have much to sell. you have a white house that refuses to lead, a senate refuses or can't act, a house led by kevin mccarthy that says look, we need to raise the debt ceiling, we need to make sure there is no default in this country and we have a solution to do that with spending reforms. by the way, a cnn poll says 60% of americans agree with kevin mccarthy. >> john: $32 trillion is a big
10:48 am
number we are heading toward so quickly. mccarthy says look, i'm willing to make concessions here, i made some concession, and by the way, some of what's in the limit save grow act are democratic ideas. listen to how he put it. >> we've offered a lot of concessions. the cap on the spending is a democrat idea. the work -- the work requirement was a democrat idea. the -- i can't help it if the democrats have become so extreme and now it's a party of bernie sanders. >> john: potential bit fall here for mccarthy. if he has to make a compromise he cannot sell to the freedom caucus he needs democrats to get it through. given what happened in the vote for speakership, what it took him to get there, that could be problematic. >> john, when he's talking concessions, he's not making any concessions, not negotiating against himself. he put the deal on the table. he has made it clear republicans will not default. this is all on the president at
10:49 am
this point. if the president is going to come in and he told you in the original deal he passed with 218 members supporting it, it had joe manchin's caps on it, it had joe biden's clinton era work requirements on it. these are things that are normal and until you have the other side actually showing urgency we are not going to see much progress. >> john: fingers crossed it's going to happen. thank you. we have to jump for some breaking news. >> sandra: fox news alert as you are looking live now at the tolling of the bells to mark one year since uvalde school shooting. the bells there scheduled to ring 21 times beginning at 12:49 p.m. central time in uvalde to honor the victims of the shooting at robb elementary school there. the bells are ringing, let's listen.
