reaction on the glitches and on desantis himself. good evening. >> reporter: governor ron desantis remains confident. he did his first tv interview as a presidential candidate tonight on fox news. he explain what his top three priorities would be as pres president. >> there's a lot you can do, ripping out biden's anti-american energy policy, which you probably could do most of that executive. and then reconstitution leising the administrative state. >> reporter: also, desantis who was already called ron desantis money is by former president donald trump said he is not fazed by nicknames. he says he is ready to take on his republican challengers. >> i don't mind being called different things. i have been called everything but a child of god as it is. it does not faze me. make sure you call me a winner because that is what we have done in the state of florida and that is what we would do

nationally. >> reporter: the governor's video on twitter to announce his presidential run during the conversation with twitter ceo elon musk had some technical glitches, providing some people from viewing it initially and this group swift criticism. a spokeswoman for the democratic national committee said in a statement "in true ron desantis fashion, his potential launch was not ready for prime time. welcome to the race for the maga base." and another example of why he is just not ready for the job. the stakes are too high and but for saving america is too critical to waste on a first timer. new polls show warmer president donald trump with a 53 to 20 advantage over the florida governor. ron desantis remains confident he is very competent but -- that he is going to win the election.

>> trace: it is a big gap. desantis thinks he can close that. thank you. let's bring in the founder of the pro-desantis political action committee, former directory of homeland security. it is great to have you on. florida gop representative donald's made a good plays. listen to him and i will get your reaction. >> ron desantis has a great record. i represent the state. at the end of the day, all of his accomplishments, especially if you want to talk the abortion ban are now possible. >> trace: would desantis be as successful as governor without former president trump having that office? >> well, he most certainly wo would. i mean, desantis has distinguished himself from very good crop of chief executives including president trump. head and shoulders above them all in his accomplishment as governor of florida. i mean, the congressman only touched on one and that was his

second pro-life bill. there's also lowering debt. there's also fighting the woke mob at the corporate level and higher at which a lot of us didn't even think was possible anymore. and protecting children in k-12 and given control of their lives back and their education back to their parents and he was rewarded with a 60% victory in a swing state including winning at miami dade county digits. amazing performance that has not been matched by anybody else in the race. >> trace: trubisky got to give him that. those are big numbers that he came up with. i want to put these numbers back on the board because the gop preference, you see former president trump, 53 and desantis at 20 and the rest are in single digits. 33 points. it is a lot to overcome, does he have to close the gap fast or can this be progressive ove

overtime? >> okinaka he has got to close it by the beginning of 2024. and there's plenty of time and building to do that. donald trump has been in this race six months. you know how many doors he has knocked on in iowa? zero. desantis got in today. you know how many we have not on in his behalf? 30,000 in iowa. we are building on that movement that he has led and there's so much enthusiasm for him on the ground. it will show in doorknocking, volunteers in the million dollars he got the first hour of his candidacy. he will be the next president. >> trace: the wall street journal says the following, he is a cultural brawler, more than a likely unifier. he is no back slap her and he would benefit from even a little of ronald reagan's self-deprecating humor. i got about 30 seconds. >> well, humor helps all the time. he was armed with trey gowdy tonight. he was a smiling machine and, you know, très had him on there for a good long time. he has a sharp brain and a quick with. and a tough, tough hide that he has demonstrated to the media and the liberals and i think that that is going to play very well with republican voters as they get to know america's governor. >> trace: yeah, he definitely has some followers and likability. ken cuccinelli, best of luck for you. now from former president tr trump's side, let's bring in make america great again in spokeswoman. the former president has made it clear that he thinks that ron desantis is being disloyal for running for president. it sounds like he is concerned a bit. >> no, president trump is not concerned. he is speaking the truth.

ron desantis has been disloyal and ron desantis would not even be in this position if president tripp had not not endorsed his gubernatorial campaign back in 2018. and ron desantis' ron desantis' announcement today proves that this man is not ready for prime time. he is not ready to be the leader of the free world and save america from joe biden and the democrats disasters and gender. he announced his campaign on twitter. a big-time platform that the majority of republican primary voters don't even use, there was a plethora of technological difficulties. that were quite embarrassing and show his team is not ready but most importantly the message. did not mention ukraine. did not mention china, did not mention the foreign policy problems we have across the world. did not mention inflation or immigration either. issues that are at the top of the mind for american voters right now. >> trace: in fairness, he did talk about those issues with trey gowdy and others. my question is he has $120 million. $200 million budget, that is a

pretty good starting point for ron desantis. >> this race is shaping up to be a lot like 2016 where president trump was outspent. he was not at work. ron desantis can continue to try and build himself as trump 2.0, trump of the future. but the truth of the matter is donald trump is leading this race by more than 40 points and some polls. he is leading in new hampshire, leading in iowa and why is that? because he has a clear contrast between life in joe biden's america and life into trump's america and we need they want leadership. only president truman can walk into the white house, call gmac to get america back on track. we can't gamble america's future. there is way too much at stake. >> seven people now in this race. the former president does not go after nikki haley or tim scott, it does not go after anyone else except for ron desantis. why?

>> well, that is not quick trip president trump takes shots and he punches back at people when they punch at him. i think it has to do with that loyalty factor that you brought up at the beginning of the segment. but also, it has to do with the fact that there's blood in the water. people into that ron desantis was going to be the establishment darling. he is owned by the corporate donor class as proven by his announcement today. hanging out with those donors down at the four seasons resort in miami, we cannot afford to revert back, the old establishment gop, the republican party is unequivocally america first. ron desantis had a chance to unify with president trump and adhere to the will of the voters as proven in these polls and he decided to divide. so he dug his grave. now president trump will bury him in it. >> trace: blood in the water. karoline leavitt, thank you. >> thank you. >> trace: now for some political announcements. the spring and fox news contributor guy benson. she made a fair point there. a fair bit of glitches at the announcement on twitter. but desantis' campaign is

saying, there was so much enthusiasm for governor desantis' vision for our great american comeback that he literally busted up the internet. washington is next. 1 million raised online in one hour and counting. they are already kind of riding this like the taylor swift thing and ticketmaster. the demand was so hard that that is what happened with all the glitches tonight. what are you thinking? >> they are also leaning into it. they are saying, we have broken the internet. let's break it with these fundraising numbers. go to website. and all of that. they don't really have a choice. when something goes that wrong, you have to make the best of it and it seems like they are raking in a lot of small dollar donors. there was a lot of interest. that is sort of the counters been to. there's no disputing that. that being said, they took a risk with this practice was an unconventional launch venue. sort of an unpredictable type of setting. and the candidate himself was not able to speak for the first

20 minutes because it was not working. so that is probably something that gave him a fair amount of heartburn. that is not how they wanted this rollout to begin. i think that for those of us who hyper and wise this stuff and live, eat, breathe politics will be talking about it and there will be jokes and memes about it. what happens is what happens for the first 48 hours and the first couple weeks to see if desantis can start to on the ground eat into some of those leads for president, especially in the early states. >> trace: you heard karoline leavitt say blood in the water. there's seven candidates now in this race and they are going after desantis. i'm going after tim scott. says, he punches back. but he is going after desantis. there's clearly a little bit of concern there about that. >> reporter: i mean, a look, donald trump has been attacking ron desantis since before desantis won by 20 points. his reelection victory in florida. he coined the sanctimonious

proud to the midterm elections. he has been poking and prodding and the state of florida for months now relentlessly. without doing anything close to that for the other candidates because desantis in his mind based on the data, the polling, everything else, poses the greatest political threat to trump. i think some of the attacks are landing. i think the disloyalty thing is incredibly weak sauce. i don't think that hits with republican voters. but trump has built a large l lead. >> trace: about 20 seconds left. he has money. he has got a little bit of excitement behind him. as he close this gap relatively soon? or does it take a while? >> reporter: i think he has to show some movement in the coming month or so. he has to show some the momentum. you are not going to close 30, 40 points overnight. but incremental progress especially iowa and new hampshire, that is probably a leading indicator potentially he is going to have a real shock

the city as you put it out, trace, is facing what officials there called a humanitarian crisis. with hundreds of migrants sleeping at police stations in recent weeks. now, the city is also receiving about 700 migrants each and every day. another busload from the great state of texas is scheduled to arrive wednesday afternoon, same as it ever was, trace. >> trace: and krithi those critics say you are a century the city and now you can't handle this. now to a horrifying story where a father who was trying to protect his 14-year-old son was beaten to death by a group of adults who came to his home looking to finish a schoolyard fight. marianne rafferty is live with the senseless details. good evening. >> reporter: that family is going through a lot right now. they are grieving the loss of 43 old christopher michael right after he was brutally beaten and killed in front of his home on friday. family says the incident stemmed from a fight one of their three

they are going to fight if these guys clearly because they literally went to this father's house to ask his 14-year-old son, his fiancée's 14-year-old son to come out and finished a schoolyard fight and then they beat him to death. this is since -- we worry about drive-by shootings. we don't hear about these types of crimes very often, to. but it is, you know, it is awakened in iowa. >> not only an eye-opener but it is sickening. it is a sad situation in america where we have these kinds of incidents where grown-ups, grown-ups, you expect to have some responsibility would go to a man's home and ask his son to come out and finish a fight and when the man says, mr. wright, you know i'm going to allow my son to come out. at that stage and say, we are going to fight you. and they wound up beating this man to death.

i sincerely hope that they bring charges against all of the individuals and they charge them all with murder in this case, trace. >> trace: i think that is exactly what is going to happen. i want to move on to memphis because a tv crew was out interviewing a woman. they were talking about curfews. teenage curfews because of the crime. and watch what happened. >> my name is yolanda. [sound of gunfire] get it down. get down. just stay down and get down. it is okay. thank you, lord jesus. stay down and get down. they are coming back. >> trace: two things struck me about that. one was the actual gunfire itself during an interview about crime and how collected and calm this woman was. she was saying, stay down, the state -- it is going to be okay. it is unbelievable the amount of crime we are surrounded by.

what do you think about that? >> reporter: you are absolutely right. when you look at what happened in memphis, i would like to tell you, but it is the norm. this is the reason the woman on camera was so cool and calm and talking to the camera crew and other individuals on the scene. but this tells you how brazen they are in that city. they don't give a damn about one enforcement being there because they are limited in the amount of law enforcement in these areas and what we saw there was a brazen shooting. i remember, this happened in front of cameras. cameras and these guys are shooting at an apartment building. a drive-by shooting. it is just shocking. but this is not -- this is the norm in america. >> trace: i'm going to eat on a good note because we have some video of good samaritans who actually helped the california highway patrol officer who was getting attacked. you can.

them in jail. for a few hours. and then release them. in other words, the city wants to use their limited police resources to arrest and process drug users, give them a few hours to come down from their pride so they can, what could be more coherent to look for more drugs. common sense things that this is clearly dominating the methods. just two weeks ago, san francisco's plan was to bring in the california highway patrol and national guard to combat drug trafficking. it turned out to be a dozen guard members and a half dozen ghp officers doing restrictive work. and this all out assault on drug traffickers came on the heels of an all-out assault on drug addicts where the city open $22 million fenced in facility to address the spike in drug overdoses. the plan was to set up an area where addicts could get help. and get drugs. 49,000 people got drugs. 53 people got treatment. the center opened just after new

year's in 2022 and shut down before christmas of the very same year. common sense wonders of san francisco regrets decriminalizing drug possession. well, a bipartisan group of california lawmakers is now are trying to figure out if $20 billion in tax. -- taxpayer money allocated to fight homelessness is being spent wisely because the problem is getting worse. here is the senior correspondent, carter campbell. >> reporter: since 2018, california has spent more than $20 billion on housing and homeless programs. only to see the number of people living on the street skyrocket. with encampments going out in cities that never had them before. these homeless encampments are not safe. they are not umaine. we all know that. they are actually brutal and unacceptable. >> reporter: dave cortese he is among a bipartisan group of lawmakers supporting a sweeping audit to find out how public funds have been used and how

effective that spending has been. >> there's also been a request for our office to try to determine how many individuals have actually received shelter. >> reporter: among its many objectives, the audit will analyze california's long-held housing first policy, getting people into shelter without also requiring them to address the drug or mental health issues that landed many of them on the street to begin with. >> we really need the housing to achieve those results and without housing, it is nearly impossible to achieve any kind of healthcare or substance use treatment while you are still drilling with crisis -- dealing with crisis on the street. >> reporter: visiting an encampment, he said california should invest in solutions tied to the sober living. argument that is the policy of many privately funded housing programs. >> we have amazing programs in our community that are actually getting people out of the cycle of homeless but they require sobriety and they require you to get clean and none of those programs qualify for any of the funding. that needs to change as well.

>> reporter: the audit helps to identify whether long-term solutions will take more money or a bold new strategy. it is expected to be done by october. trace? >> trace: claudia, thank you. let's bring in the chairman, carl demaio. california has spent more than 20 billion over the last five years, to address the crisis of homelessness. the legislative audit committee as the state auditor to figure out what taxpayers have to show for their investment and the answer is very little. >> we have nothing to show but failure. we are throwing good money after bad. california has spent more than any other state per homeless person and in the aggregate. and yet we have had an increase of 33% of homelessness since 2007. while the rest of the country has had a decrease of double digits and homelessness. what is california different? california refuses to enforce rules to break the cycle of dependency.

the latest study showed that about 80% of chronically homeless individuals are dual diagnosed. mental health and substance abuse. you have got to get to the root cause or else you are basically throwing good money after bad. where is all this $20 billion going? it is going to very expensive inflated and wasteful boondoggle housing projects. we are not talk about shelter beds. were not talking about bunk beds figure talk about apartments, $70,800,000, one of the projects was a million dollars per unit. the other scam that they are going is they are propping of dilapidated. >> trace: those crappy hotels downtown, the owners are saying, have all the money. >> taxpayer-funded hotel vouchers and $6,500 per month cost per hotel room. dilapidated hotel rooms. we are finding that a lot of these vouchers are going to sex

offenders. two weeks ago, three girls were molested by two sex offenders who were supported by one of these programs. >> trace: and we did the same stories five or six stories with the sex offenders and we reported on it and nothing ever changed. homeless problem, the same thing. it is not going to change. >> there is a solution and that is, find success. there are private vendors, private providers out there who are only funded by charitable contributions. why? they are not allowed to get any government money. the state of california is discriminating against these proven programs. and that is where the money should go. we should be finding outcomes, not failure. >> trace: i want to get your take on this because it goes hand-in-hand with this. san francisco streets are filthy. we are talking graffiti and trash and broken glass and human and animal feces. these are the streets that have not been 89% feces. tenderloin, 74%, feces.
