4:01 pm
he missed an opportunity to show america's face. this was maybe the big epps moment of his career and there's no video of it. there was nothing for networks to broadcast. no clips to distribute and run on loop for days. nothing to post online. newspapers and web sites couldn't even slap the announcement image on the front page. plus, run the risk of glitches and that could have been executed better. but, on the flip side. his team says the risk paid off because the guy has raised a ton of money since then. he raised over 8 million bucks in 24 hours and that's a record. and now that the twitter launch is out of the way, desantis is sticking to a more traditional campaign approach. is he doing the media blitz, fox, talk radio, podcast. and next week he is holding events in iowa, new hampshire, and south carolina. so his foot is on the gas and his sights are set on trump, he is looking to neutralize ron's strength on covid. listen. >> when the ron desanctimonious facts come out. you will see that he is better than most democrat governors,

political correctness, so we will see how that plays out. and desantis adds this: trump is going left on policy, too. he hits him with this. >> he has attacked me for opposing an amnesty bill. he wanted the amnesty 2 million illegal aliens in 2018 when he was president. i opposed him on that because i'm opposed to amnesty. he also attacked me for opposing some of the spending bills, and i did because it was a waste of money. donald trump signed those bills. that was not consistent with his america first rhetoric in 2016. he said he was going to eliminate the national debt when he ran in 2016, he ended up adding almost 8 trillion to the debt in four years. and so he is running to the left. i don't know what happened to donald trump. this is a different guy today than when he was running in 2015 and 2016. and i think the direction that he is going with his campaign is the wrong direction. >> jesse: ron is saying don spent too much money and pushed amnesty. none of this really matters

until they face each other on the same debate stage. everything melts away and the voters get to see these arguments under pressure. joe biden is in the weakest in his presidency. fox news polling say 64% of voters say biden is a weak leader and cnn did their own polling and it turns out their numbers were just as bad. >> horrible news. horrible for joe biden you are our new cnn poll while the president leads democratic competitors by a huge margin. two thirds of all of the american people surveyed, 66% of the public say that a biden victory would either be a setback or a disaster for the united states. >> biden is facing headwinds, his favorability rating dropped in 42% in december to 35%. >> i can't get over this number. 66% of voters in this poll say biden's 2024 win if he wins what will that mean for the country? 66% say it will be a disaster or

desantis' calculation is to plate long game and be there as the alternative. you know, he could see trump facing indictment. some of these dragging into next year. if desantis can hang onto the money, if he can survive the debates, which won't be easy, he could play a factor. but, right now it's early and trump's in the driver's seat. let's bring in dan everhart. he is a desantis donor and after dan we are going to have a trump supporter. so, dan, my analysis so far is that the play for ron to hang in there, stack the cash, survive the debates and then be there in the spring of next year? >> i would put it differently, jesse, but i agree with a lot of your opening monologue. i would say two things, first of all, donald trump's numbers, i would be a lot more scared if i was him. he has run twice as the republican party nominee. he is the incumbent there was no republican on the ballot before him last time. and the best can he do right now is 55% in the primary?

i would be worried if i was donald trump. secondly, as far as governor desantis, it's concern, look. this is just where is he starting the race. is he going to make his case in iowa. he is going to make his case in new hampshire. he is going to have the money to get his message out. and trump hasn't faced primary voters in seven years. i think when he does, and primary voters can choose between what governor desantis has done in florida and what donald trump has done the last two or three years, they are going to flip and turn to governor desantis. >> jesse: so you think the move is to get to the right of donald trump on culture and on policy? >> i would put it differently, jesse. i would say the move is to stay to the right of donald trump and be a consistent conservative and have the coat tails that ron desantis had in november of '22 and carry that message on and republican primary voters are going to come off the sidelines and coalesce around ron desantis as soon as they see he is viable in iowa and viable in new hampshire. donald trump's 55% is a ceiling

[laughter] >> jesse: that's a bold prediction, dan with due respect. >> yeah. well, fair enough. but, look, trump hasn't faced primary voters in seven years. jesse, i think when they have a chance to choose between governor desantis' record and what trump has done the last two or three years. they are all going to break for governor desantis and there is going to be a resounding victory for the governor in iowa. >> jesse: all right. we will see how that shakes out. i don't know if trump loses
