desantis officially joining 2024 presidential race as the gop field fills out. with us today is ashley davis, former j w. bush white house official and west front strategies founding partner also al motor partner and democratic strategist. welcome to you both. thank you for being here. ashley, i will begin with you, the desantis campaign says in 24 hours after announcing they brought in $8.2 million. so with that in mind, let's take a look at some polling here. these are new fox polls. gop presidential nominee preference among republican primary voters former president trump is at 53% and ron desantis at 20%. now keep in mind that trump back in february was at 43%. so he's come up and ron desantis has gone down, what does that tell you? >> well, i think governor
10:04 am
desantis has been going down because of some of the different problems that he's had in regards with some of his policies he's taken and with regards to president trump as we all know the more trouble he gets in, the more people like him especially his base. but i have been saying for a long time, i still think we have a long way to go. we have the debates that are starting with you fox news in august and we will see how that goes, but we also have several governors that are suppose today get in, maybe governor christie, governor youngkin from virginia as well as governor burgan from north dakota and tim scott, tim scott just got in as well. senator from south carolina as well as we see nikki haley's numbers going up. we still have a long way to go. alicia: how close are democrats watching out in the republican party or is it just too early to watch closely in. >> we watch because it's
10:05 am
entertaining but i think the numbers aren't that meaningful. there's a long way to go. i do find it interesting that you have the lanes that seem developing, you have trump, you have desantis who is like trump but different just because he's not trump and you have the other individuals that ashley mentioned that are moderate and aspirational. tim scott offers optimistic vision in america whereas desantis and trump, things are bad and we are the ones that need to fix it. i'm curious to see how the dynamic plays out in the debates. alicia: democrats have challenges on their own. let's look at the fox news poll on the condition of the economy right now. as of right now 18% of those polled said they feel it is excellent or good, 83% only fair or poor and we will follow that up with the fox news poll on president biden's job performance. right now it's at 42% approval.
10:06 am
disapproval 58%. this is a real challenge, al, for democrats. refer of course, it is, although i would note when president obama was running for reelection a year out he was in low 40's as well. what does numbers say now don't necessarily mean what people will feel in november and, of course, the most important thing who would president biden would be running against. you have a rematch against trump, there would be a lot of fatigue and that would be good rematch for the party. >> and the interesting thing is you have the other group that if president trump and president biden are the candidates that are running against each other, they will come up with a third-party candidate and so what they are trying too do is get on different ballots. you do have theory match you have an interesting dynamic and i don't know who that will help. alicia: and, al, ashley brings
10:07 am
up good point with no labels because they are not connected to either party. they are seeking space on the ballots and candidates out there. this is something below the surface if you're not paying attention to the day-to-day. how concerns are democrats about this? >> i think right now leading democrats feel like that could be problematic for us but as ashley said it's hard to tell. the people running labels are nancy jacobson and mark penn, i think frequent fox commentator. i think that the candidates that have been talked about, it's speculative, have been talked about no labels folks to run as that independent voice have been joe manchin, senator from west virginia, charley baker, former republican governor from massachusetts and governor hogan, former republican from maryland. so depending on which one of those if any of those emerge as candidates that should shade who they would take votes from. >> and liz cheney.
10:08 am
>> that would be good for us. >> alicia: let's go back and look at the possible gop ticket. we will look at the trump-desantis -- i'm sorry, trump-biden head to head. let's go to trump-biden if that's what we are looking at as of right now. right now if you take a look at joe biden and we are asking people in fox news poll, people saying to describe a trait they care about. first one cares about people like me, joe biden 45%. donald trump 37%. same with honest and trust worthy, joe biden beats donald trump but then you go down to has mental soundness to serve, joe biden 37% then it flips, donald trump at 43% and a strong leader joe biden 33%, actually donald trump at 51%. so it's really kind of all over the place in terms of how voters feel at the point about both candidates. >> absolutely, i think what you
10:09 am
see most people think that joe biden is a good person, good man, obviously there's issues about his mental health, but i think they look at donald trump as a stronger leader and i think that that's always been the case in the -- not even on domestic policy but also with international policy. so i think it comes down with those things. people don't like trump but some like his rhetoric but they also think he's a strong leader. >> you can be a strong leader but if you're going to lead poll box t the abiss i don't know if that's what you want. >> i think the most important part of the poll and favorable to my side is that more people think he cares about them and ultimately elections are about whether or not they think the person in charge is going to help them. and so i'm very hartened by that. alicia: ashley, though, doesn't it also matter where folks feel they are in their life at the time it comes to make that choice when the primaries and
10:10 am
disagree, i also think th after 2007-2008 that don't trust political parties anymore and they think that donald trump talks their talk and that's what brought them up so they do care -- they do think that he cares about them. maybe just not in the same way as like let's go have a beer together but he believes in america. he believes in america first. not that biden doesn't, but that is his number one message. alicia: you have folks look like they are sorting things out still because they have feel that is are really all over the place on both candidates. ashley davis, al mottur, thank you very much for your time today. >> thank you. griff: debt dealing negotiations back underway in the hill today after lawmakers signaled a deal may be close and the deadline quickly approaching this as president biden spends the holiday weekend in camp david and faces low polling numbers
10:11 am
ahead of 2024. we have fox team coverage on all of this with senior congressional correspondent chad pergram and lucas tomlinson outside the white house. lucas, we will start with you, what's the latest? lucas: president biden sounded optimistic about a debt dealing deal happening, in fact, he said, quote, very close when asked how close they are. now he also was a little more tight-lip when asked about the following question about welfare reform. >> what do you tell democrats to vow to work requirements? >> i don't vow to anybody. lucas: according to the news fox news poll more people would blame him if a deal is not reached, griff, as you can see here. now notable back in 2011 former federal reserve alan greenspan says the u.s. should never default in debt.
