for the want to remind people encounters with sharks are extremely rare. for more on this let's bring in director the florida tech shark conservation lab. she's also florida tech assistant professor. thank you for joining us today. >> inks for having me progress and glad to get to the segment with you. i made beach guy and around the ocean when i was located i was terrified of sharks to the start of the about the numbers and the odds. it a lot better i wasn't dying to a whole lot of other things were the numbers these days? one in several million chance of a shark attack? >> yes they're very, very few shark attacks per year in the entire world. very few here in the u.s. but should never eat but let you not get in the waterford everyone should use the ocean even though there sharks in there. but we are in the ocean we are really in their territory. bill: look over the numbers to get 2022 run the united states

there were only 41 unprovoked shark attacks. just to put that in perspective provokes there are more than three and 20 million people in nine states florida lead there's a lot of bull sharks. california at four. these are minuscule. so put those numbers into perspective for us for who's afraid to get into the ocean this holiday weekend. she's put that in perspective your chance of dying on the way to the beach are much higher than dying from a shark attack. i swear a shark attack is the numbers you quoted are really, really astronomically small. brunettes on my fatalities but most shark attacks are provoked by people and the ones that aren't, are usually very minor. very rarely do we have a fatality due to a shark. in fact in many years are not fatalities at all. bill: in your opinion to

systemic there's a rise in shark sightings and attacks because everybody these days has a cell phone or iphone everybody got a camera in their hand. do you think that contributes to the deal is more sharks there looking to get you? what's absolutely. in fact none of the sharks out there are not looking to get you. we are not their prey. short or long live careful creatures. think more like a wolf that will stop its break them back off within thing signals that prate might be dangerous. like you saw in that video, that kind of strike attack is really rare. it only occurs after shark is reasonably sure what is his attack is ousley prey. i was to that's not us. the shark bites something like a kayak we assume that the case of mistaken identity place going for something thanks is maybe a sea turtle. bill: what are things people can do to up their safety a little bit cosmic member as a kid and scared of the sharks he could

get on google say don't quit murky water, don't some at dusk or dawn do not wear shiny things don't go and when you're bleeding or go near people who are fishing. what are some of the easy things people can do to minimize any chance of an interaction with the shark? those are all good pointers. in general it's best to move slowly when you're in the water if you are an area you think a shark may be moved slowly, do not splash around purdue not act like wounded prey. number shark attack depends on people. the more people in the water, the more encounters will occur. we know shark numbers are in fact down. and, as you mentioned smart phones are everywhere. while it might feel like they're more shark attacks there really aren't more shark attacks. they are not going up in fact sharks in general are in tro trouble. >> last question to your 20 seconds for a response for just talk about how important sharks are to the oceanic eagles echo
