about a decade ago. it's been opened for 25 years. this memorial ceremony is where we have, we really remember those women who have given their lives in service to the nation all the way back to the revolutionary war when it was illegal for women to serve but they disguised themselves as men. mike: what do you want our viewers to know about the military women's memorial? >> the memorial is hidden in place. entrance at the arlington national cemetery and many people see the curved wall with the reflecting pool and they think that is it. behind there there's basically a museum that tells the stories of the military women all the way from the revolutionary war till today, over 3 million of us that are served and defended this country. mike: awesome. we have numbers from the pentagon in terms of women in active duty service. the army 15.5%. navy 20.5%. the marine corps 9.1% and air
10:53 am
force 21.3% all have grown in female service since 2005. what should folks at home now about the service of women in the united states military? >> well, this year is also the 75th anniversary, june 12th of this year will be the hall mark legislation, 75th anniversary that president truman signed that gave us the right to have a career in the military before that we could only serve during a war plus six months and then we were sent home. so in 1948, 75 years ago, we finally had that opportunity to have that career and that has really changed things for us. so 75 years great things have happened. initially, we have capped at 2%. so the fact that some of the services now exceed 20% and, again, many of the career fields were closed to us until just a decade ago. so great things are on the horizon for us. mike: what kind of events does your organization have in the works? >> we do a lot of programming
10:54 am
and education events to help america to know about these incredible women that have served. so as i said, june 12th, 75th anniversary party, celebration at the memorial and then we also do a lot that has to do with women peace and security which congress mandated several years ago that the department of defense be part of the planning and execution of the women peace and security program. so we look at that both retrospectively but also to the future. what can military women do to support the women peace and security programs? mike: a lot of folks think of memorial day barbecuing, going to the beach and the river, what do you say to folks about the real meaning of this holiday? >> well, i hope i don't get too choked up. it's about remembering those that gave everything, that did not come home. so, yeah, i work at the entrance to arlington when i'm done here.
