contributor. thank you for taking the time with us today. >> hi, bill. happy memorial day. >> bill: like-wise. take a look at this graphic, the headlines coming out with the media in terps of president trump's chances as more and more republicans jump in to the race. a lot of the headlines saying for trump, the more gop people getting in to the race, the better it is for him suggesting they're going to fracture the vote for somebody like a ron desantis or another candidate. yes, we'll start with you. my question to you, do you find that to be true, the more people getting in the race? does that help donald trump? and i love the toy, by the way. >> absolutely. thanks, by the way. this could not setter better for now for donald trump. as we know, he has by far the most loyal core base of supporters of any political figure we've seen in modern times. the more candidates that jump in to this race to divide that other piece of the pie the more it bodes well for him.
12:24 pm
the biggest key for ron desantis, when 2023 becomes 2024, how many candidates polling below five, six, 7% and won't be many, people will put country over party and drop out of the race to make it a two-man race. we saw this movie in 2020. kamala harris dropped out in december of 2019. before super tuesday, pete buttigieg who won iowa and amy klobuchar dropped out clear ago pass for biden. for the florida governor, if you look at the average of polls in iowa where desantis is putting his chips in to the table, it's trump 40, desantis 38. >> bill: who do democrats want to see as the gop nominee? >> well, it's pretty clear. most democrats would prefer donald trump to be the nominee. his negatives are higher.
12:25 pm
his legal problems seem to be growing every day. and given the results of the 2018, 2020 and 2022 election, it's clear in the a general election at least donald trump is a drag on the republican ticket at the very least. i agree with joe's analysis. i think he's strengthened by more candidates. bottom line, the democrats hope and indeed now expectation is that the former president will be the nominee in 2024. >> bill: joe, if you're somebody like ron desantis, how do you try to work your way up the polls? with more people jumping in the race, that's going to fracture that piece of the pie. how does someone like desantis move up? >> well, bill, it comes down to

two events, the debates later this summer where ron desantis will be on the stage with donald trump. he stays out of the name calling. if trump goes down that route, they will be reminded of the trump fatigue as far as trump getting personal instead of talking policy. ron desantis has a story to tell in terms of florida. 2.5 unemployment, big wins on the education front and more people are moving to florida out of california, new york and ill illinois. ron desantis should run against joe biden instead of donald trump. if iowa goes well, it's a puncher chance for ron desantis when many people don't give him a chance right now. i'd say he has a very good chance if he does well during that debate, bill. >> bill: doug, final response for you. >> joe is right. desantis needs to make the case
