president being the president meaning there would be no traditional stumping at least to start. and the campaign also signaled a fragmented media environment and what they called a need to meet voters where they are, meaning heavy use of social media platforms, influencers and a large coalition of surrogates. but while those surrogates have been appearing on tv and digital ads here and there, so far only the dnc has really weighed in much on who biden might be facing in the general saying if florida governor ron desantis. he got his start of the house freedom caucus where he wanted to end medicare and social security as we know it. worked to repeal the affordable care act and one thing is guaranteed, whoever makes it out will only have done so by catering to the most maga right wing republicans in the primary. president biden is signaling that he is trying to stay above

support. i got endorsed by 37 legislators. we have a lot in common. i think the ground swell of support has been strong and we'll press the case. >> dana: karl, how does it look so far? iowa is in the distance but not that far away. >> it is not that far aware and appears that desantis has adopted what has been a winning strategy in the past. that is promised to visit all 99 counties, put a strong emphasis on getting local endorsements and have a grassroots army already through a super pac they've knocked on over 100,000 doors of likely caucus goers and will keep at it. this kind of strategy has worked before. this is the iowa poll, a widely respected poll and run by a woman named sell stecher. in 2007 mike hub bee was 3% in

june. 27% in november and won with 34%. santorum was at 4% in june of 2011, 6% in november and won in january and 2016 ted cruz put a strong emphasis on winning the evangelical vote. 5% in may, 10% in october, and 28% and won in february of 2016. so desantis has a similar strategy. we'll see if it works. the last time somebody who led in the early polls was the winner on caucus night was 2000. donald trump won in 2020 with no opposition but in a contested race. >> bill: who does she have in the lead today? >> she has donald trump in the lead and ron desantis in second

this. let me ask in front of america. it is true historically that most presidents get a second term in america. rare they don't. but it does happen and we've certainly saw carter, george h.w. bush. trump. what does history tell you where biden is now in that scenario. >> i'm writing about this exact topic. the problem for joe biden is people don't see him as a strong leader and more importantly, they see him as too old to be effective. i will be talking about the polls that reflect that. nothing is going to change the fact or make him look younger. it's not going to change. i think the fact that he is seen as too old is in direct relationship to people seeing him as not strong enough to be an effective president. that's a bad place to be. he is okay it looks like inside the democratic party. when robert kennedy who has only
6:12 am
his last name to give him anything is running at 20% and marian williamson 10%. a third of dome congratulations say i'm looking for somebody else and little to commend either of those other two people. it is remarkable. the president is in a weak place even within his own party and i think potentially weaker in a general election. a belief he is too old and not strong enough, neither one of those things will improve over the next two years. >> bill: think about the campaign relying on surrogates and celebrities and social media. not a ton of campaigning. occasional trip to philadelphia looking for democratic votes in the state of pennsylvania. it will be an interesting campaign. maybe one we haven't seen quite before in our lifetime in the modern media and television age. karl, great to see you. talk to you later in the week. >> dana: thanks. >> thanks. >> dana: the race for the white house runs through milwaukee. the first republican debate is

mccarthy and biden are trying to sell it to their own parties. "wall street journal" said a debt ceiling deal worth passing and forced concessions from biden. there was a democratic staffer on background told a reporter that it could have been worse for them but they aren't happy with it. >> bill: remarkable thing that mccarthy got passed what he did. republicans were able to go on offense. the rubber will hit the road today. house rules committee. i don't want to get too deep in the weeds. we'd need round-up. but there are nine republicans and four democrats on this committee. two of those republicans have already said they don't support this deal. one of them, chip roy out of texas, said part of the deal that mccarthy made to become speaker was that he would only take a unanimous vote among republicans out of the house committee in order to go forward with bills, including this one here. so this is when we get into the

conflict has a civilian area of moscow been targeted. eight drones were fired, all shot down but falling debris damaged buildings as noted in the high-end area. there were some injuries and disruptions and streets closed off. it was branded a terror attack by the kiev regime. ukraine did not take responsibility but officials in kiev did offer cryptic comments to make sure all know they aren't displeased. this comes after yet another barrage on kiev and other parts of ukraine by russia. overnight 30 more drones fired at the ukrainian capital. most shot down. one person killed along with buildings hit. the intensity of the russian assaults clearly a sign that moscow thinks this long-expected spring counter offensive could be coming soon. russia is trying to expend kiev's air defenses or rattle nerves. the drone assault on moscow has done that by all accounts.
