to the left. >> ainsley: right but i still want to hear from him. i want to hear from all the candidates. >> brian: right now 90%. >> ainsley: i hope he changes his mind. >> brian: i don't think he is debating. >> steve: big mistake. >> brian: up 30, 40 points. see if ron desantis can close the gap. very interesting the way ron desantis did did it yesterday. here the problem with the president but here is my problem with joe biden. what the president accused me of? i don't think so. here's my problem, where i would bring the country. interesting, i'm not avoiding the punch. i'll address it. but it's not going to be my focus and by the way he is big into eight years. i'm going to need more than four years to fix this. donald trump can only do four. i need eight. i will get you eight. if you get me four i will get another four. if you elect donald trump he can't give you another four. so that's a legitimate tactic without alienating the base. famous thing is whoever beats donald trump you have to beat him and get his voters. if you beat him and lose his voters you can't win.

>> steve: brian, you make the point we were talking about last week, if ron desantis wins, he can serve for two terms. but by the constitution, donald trump, who has already served one term can only do another. so on his first day he would be a lame duck and that is one of the considerations big donors have. and the worry from a lot of big donors is not only does -- if donald trump won the primary, it's a real good chance he would lose the white house. but, also lose the house. and that's one of the problems. but here's the thing about iowa. and i know the polls are way ahead. i heard kim reynolds yesterday, the iowa governor, she was talking about how the field is not set yet. and because it's so early, remember, the first debates aren't until later in the summer. and the first votes in the caucuses aren't going to be until july -- or rather january. she said in may of 2007, romney, mccain, and rudy were all in the top three. and mike huckabee was at zero

percent but mike huckabee went on to win the iowa caucuses. in may of 2015, the top three were walker, aruba and huckabee. and cruise and trump, who finished were not even at 10%. so much can hab in iowa. he is going to visit all 99 counties in iowa. so he kicked things off there yesterday. and to great enthusiasm he had a rousing speech and fox news channel carried it live. a lot of people run familiar with a lot of things he had to say. very forward look speech. >> ainsley: spoke at mega children about 500 people showed up e railroad against covid lockdowns and woke ideology in our schools and he said we must return to normalcy. he has four stops in iowa, sioux city, council, cedar rapids.

tomorrow new hampshire and then south carolina. then he agreed to go back over the weekend. we interviewed joni ernst and she was talking about roast and ride. traditional annual event. and all of the candidates usually go. so far we haven't heard if trump is going to be there or not. at the time when we interviewed her desantis wasn't on the docket now he has decided to go back to iowa over the weekend. shows you how important this state is then you have got trump who going to be there tomorrow for the town hall at 9:00 p.m. even though desantis has got -- his never back down which is his super pac and ted cruz is supporting that. he has hired political operatives in iowa to build up the field operations and he sent out mailers and showcased events and endorsements by the state lawmakers. when trump was asked about this. when his adviser chris loss vida, he said anyone under estimating president trump's willingness to campaign is making a huge mistake. people will see plenty of donald trump. >> brian: yeah. i don't think there is any question. governor christie got a super

♪ >> ainsley: nine teenagers arrested in connection with with the beatings of three off duty marines on a southern california pier. >> all caught on tape. officials say the attack was sparked by argument over fireworks on memorial day weekend. >> steve: todd piro joins us with details. >> shocking. not the least of which this is a nice area. brutal attack happening in the beach town of san clementy. broke out mob and teens. we want to warn you, video is graphic. one of the marines struck in the face by debris when a group of teens started setting off fireworks. the service members say when they approached them asking them to stop, the mob started throwing punches. take a look. you can see at least two of the marines in the fetal position as

the teens continue to stomp on them. orange county officials say five suspects now charged with assault with a deadly weapon. the other four with misdemeanor assault and battery. >> assault with a deadly weapon. anybody that kicks another human being in the head, [inaudible] internal injury to that magnitude will be arrested for a felony assault deadly weapon. >> this is wake-up call. it's especially tragic that we have this attack happening over memorial day weekend because we support our troops. >> officials say it is possible more arrests could be made as they learn new information about this attack. as for the marines, all three were treated at the scene for minor to moderate injuries and will make a full recovery. toss back to you. it's unclear whether or not these attackers knew they were marines but nevertheless, this is happening right in the middle of your memorial day weekend. and that's just tough. >> steve: that is tough. i had read one -- todd, thank you very much. >> you are welcome. >> steve: i had read one report

that apparently one of the marines, off duty marines said to the kids, hey, stop shootings off the fireworks. we're marines and you just hit me in the face with some of the debris. and next thing you know, one of those kids sucker punched a marine from behind and then it was just a melee. >> ainsley: bystanders were there and got in between. one lady held her arms out and said stop. stop. >> steve: they were so brave. >> brian: so many retired and active military members. there is going to be a lot of people in that area rally to the marines defense. think about this over the last three weeks marines stepping up to do the right thing guys easy with the fireworks people around you here and both end up in a line of fire. it makes you wonder how many times people are going to step up, even if you are serving, and when the most of the danger is stateside that's scary. >> ainsley: shows you if this can happen to the marines what would happen to any of us because there were so many of those jiewnchs. too many for the marines to fight back.

most common terms give them the benefit of the doubt 1.3 trillion over 10 years. annual basis of 133 billion with a growth in your national debt of somewhere around 2 billion -- excuse me $2 trillion. it doesn't seem like a great exchange. the problem is not -- has never been a willingness to deficit spend and grow the national debt. the problem has always been bending the spending curve down trying to balance out our spending to our revenue numbers. >> steve: sure. one of the problems for the house freedom caucus and for the republicans in general is you guys only control one half of one branch of government. you know, when the democrats had unified government, where they have the white house, the senate, and the congress, they could just steam roll over you guys. you guys only a little bit of leverage, really. >> yeah, but what i think should have been done here instead of that last bill that they sent over being the floor, from which

no negotiate up which is what happened here is, we should have done the very best product we could have gotten out of the house and that would have been turning the spending curve down, going back to 2019 levels. nobody would say that that was too little government and if you get those 2019 levels, we are excessive of that as far as our revenues we would be able -- i suggest we just try for a year to see if we could live within our means and then you wouldn't even have to raise the debt ceiling. we didn't do that. >> steve: yeah. and we are where we are right now. and it sounds like the house is going to have to pass this and it's got to clear the senate by monday to avert a default. ultimately, that's what a lot of americans are worried about is defaulting on our debt. >> yeah. well, here's the deal. i introduced legislation that would give us rescissions of $90 billion that $90 billion

would have immediately pushed off a debt crisis for at least probably 45 days. we thought it could go as far as 60 to 90 days. but they didn't want to do a short-term rescission. they would prefer to do this big monstrosity and it's a bit of a problem. >> steve: if you had to be a betting man, this thing going to pass tonight? >> yeah. i think it's going to pass. i think you are going to get 100 to 150 democrats and 100 or more republicans. >> what about the speaker, you know, the way that kevin mccarthy made the deal to become speaker is it just takes one member to call a vote and you could start the process to boot him. we heard some people yesterday, at least one person said this guy has got to go. what do you think is going to happen with kevin mccarthy, the speaker? >> well, you know, steve, i can't project what is going to happen with kevin. i know there is a lot of dissatisfaction. i have been focusing on the bill

and trying to get the word out on what i think are the problems with the bill. it's hard to say what will happen with kevin. i'm more concerned what is going to go on with the trajectory of the term. does this represent a new collcoalition and trajectory whe the speaker is going to go to the democrats more and more to try to put forward whatever he thinks his agenda ought to be. and that's really concerns with to me and i think it should be concerning to members of our conference. >> steve: ultimately, you would agree that the republicans got more out of the deal than the democrats. >> no, i don't think i would agree with that at all. not at all. >> steve: the speaker has said things to that effect. stephen moore, on the pages of the "new york post" said the "wall street journal" supports the passage of this bill. so there are some out there who think that the republicans are doing better than the democrats. >> yeah. and i understand that.

but i wonder if they read the bill i'm looking at admin pego $1.5 trillion worth of savings. admin pay go doesn't work. you can't have it traditional review the person the administrative have to use pay go is the director of office and management and budget who is a democrat and that program in itself only goes one year. so, steve, i don't view this as a victory for us. i view this as kind of a very -- as i said yesterday, it's a monstrosity. it it's a real problem and continuing problem for us as it careens us down over the debt cliff sooner rather than later. you got to turn your spending curve down. and this bill does not do that. >> steve: yeah. washington famous for spending a lot of money we don't have. congressman, thank you very much for starting the day and telling us where you stand on this. >> you bet. thank you, steve. >> steve: you bet. thank you, sir. all right.

good morning, greg. >> good to see you, ainsley. >> ainsley: good to see you too. yesterday we were talking about this. what happened? is this a slap ons wrist or cao, contempt can mean either criminal contempt or civil contempt. neither one of them are terribly good. criminal contempt gets voted out of the committee to the full floor they vote on it and then it gets sent to the u.s. attorney in washington who is appointed by joe biden. and who reports to merrick garland, appointed by joe biden. >> ainsley: we know what will happen there. >> who is the subject of the disputed document. , christopher wray the target of contempt he also reports to both the president and merrick garland. garland is required under law to recuse himself. he won't do it. so your other alternative is civil contempt, which means you file a lawsuit and it goes to a federal judge. if you get an impartial one. the judge could then order mr. wray, you must turn over this document. you have no legitimate basis to withhold it.
