9:00 pm
out of time. emily, kat, good luck america. >> good evening and welcome to america's latent news. fox news at night. i am trace gallagher in los angeles. breaking tonight the 2024 primary field is about to get more crowded with two big names set to announce their run push for reparations in california bay area residents are pushing to be compensated for climate change but we begin with the debt ceiling fight in the bill heading to the senate with a june 5 deadline for the president's signature. chad is on capitol hill with
9:01 pm
the latest. good evening. >> reporter: good evening a big hurdle cleared with the debt ceiling the house overwhelmingly approvingdeal brokered by president biden and house speaker mccarthy. here is the breakdown 149 gop ea at 155 democratic yea. more democrat support of the deal than the majority even though the gop runs the house. >> you said democrats got nothing so how do you define nothing? >> i think they voted for it because they wanted to take up for their president. >> reporter: the right wing of the gop is seething at mccarthy. representative ken buck wants the house to consider a vote of no confidence against the speaker. >> we were told the first night there is nothing in this for democrats.and more democrats
9:02 pm
voted for this bill than republicans. democrats have joined with mccarthy to pass bills so there is a big reassessment of the coalition for bauer out of the house. screaming the bill travels across the rotunda to the senate tomorrow where conservatives could try to slow it down. mike lee is opposed. >> it may be hailed as some triumph of bipartisanship. the american people will bear the brunt of its shortcomings. not everything that is bipartisan and is in fact in the interest of the american people. >> reporter: the senate could wrestle with the bill around this time tomorrow night. the senate minority leader mitch mcconnell wants the bill passed by friday to ease tension wall street but this co drag into the weekend. trace? >> trea let's bring in a republican lawmaker who voted in favor.carlos, thank you
9:03 pm
for coming on we appreciate your time some of your colleagues call this deal insanity.you, on the other side say this is the path to fiscal sanity. give us an idea of what you mean. >> we control one half of one third of government i think what we accomplished today reducing the deficit by over $2 trillion is a step in the right direction. i have never said this thing is perfect but we have to face reality and we are not going to have a default. we are not going to do that. it would be devastating and so we use the leverage that we had in the house to get concessions from a president who said he would never negotiate so i am very proud of the efforts of the negotiators and the speaker and what we were able to accomplish holding just one chamber in congress. can you imagine if we could hold the senate and the presidency in 2024?we could
9:04 pm
go further into resolving the issue of our debt. >> as you say the bill passed big numbers tonight so you won the battle.what about the war? this could be held up in the senate, do you have any feeling of how it goes throughout the rest of the process? >> i would hope they would take it and pass it and give it to the president and move on to other business that we want to do in the house. we have kept our promises and our commitment but our promise always was, we were going to pass the bills out of the house that we promise to the american people. the president obviously, a much different story. that's important in 2024 we went the house a bigger majority, we when the senate and the presidency. >> your colleague, senator mike lee is a no and he said no and this is why. >> rather than offering substantive solutions to offer
9:05 pm
root causes to our fiscal woes, it appears to be a palliative pill. it's a bad deal for america. a missed opportunity to confront challenges and abdication of responsibility, to protect americans economic security and well-being. >> a lot of different opinions on this bill. >> he was not at the negotiating table and we don't have all of the power. it's really good to sit outside and not be the person in the arena doing the negotiations and then criticize whatever comes out.i hate to say it but that's reality.i think we got the best deal that we could with the cars that we had and i think we need better cars of that has to come in 2024 and if we have those better cards the results will be better for the american people. i'm not 100 percent happy with the results. i think we could have gone further but we could have gone further if we had two chambers and the president. i'm not so sure he could have
9:06 pm
gone further with the cars we are holding right now. >> thank you for your time. >> governor desantis is in iowa tonight and he has company. president trump is also in the hawkeye state. we are tracking the early campaign showdown. >> let the games begin. at least on the gop side of the presidential primaries. former president ronald trump and ron desantis in the hawkeye state. just santos has been on the stop all week long trying to draw a distinction between himself and 45 especially when it comes to their respective memories of the covid pandemic. >> if you say cuomo did a better job with covid than florida did, that's not what he used a sacred six months ago he would have never said that. he used to say how great florida was, hell, his whole family moved to florida. are you kidding me?
9:07 pm
>> the trump campaign has been returning fire saying this. one of the governor recent appearance his speech was light on substance and crafted to appease establishment. trump is looking for this as the former president remains on top of the list of declared and potential candidates 56 percent support for him leaving governor desantis by 31 points weexpense ike pence and chris christie to announce letek. let the games begin. >> let's bring in the chief communications officer mark, great to have you want. i will give you some rapidfire questions and we will go in depth. desantis in iowa. quick thoughts. >> he has to go. as the first stop in if you're going to try to defeat trump that's the first place you can do it. >> your old buddy mike pence jumping into the race.
9:08 pm
>> he is a midwest governor and he served for a long time. he has a connection to iowa. you have to give it a shot. this is the time if you are going to do it. >> chris christie? >> he is a puncher and donald trump is a counterpunch or so it didn't work out in 2016. we will see how it goes this time around. >> let's put the numbers on the board. donald trump leads by 53.22 desantis 22. that's a big spread. >> it really is. it's a one person race right now according to the polls and if you are ron desantis you have to pick up 30+ percentage points. if you are not named donald trump or ron desantis that's a bigger mountain to climb and the question is, how do you get
9:09 pm
there? if you attack the president you run the risk of alienating the base which you will need if you are somehow successful it's very difficult to see how anyone is going to all things being equal, they never are in politics but it will be difficult to see if anyone can top donald trump. >> president biden's approval numbers. brand-new numbers. approval of foreign policy 38 percent. approval on border security 33 percent. economy 33 percent. those numbers are anemic. >> they really are. all the issues that matter to the american people. joe biden is in the 30s and looking at massive disapproval. it's no wonder you have people like robert f kennedy junior and others who were pulling well. the question is, are democrats going to get a choice? the dnc has this thing baked for joe biden if the american people or the democratic primary voters want him or not. >> you talk about the dnc the actor who used to be on
9:10 pm
dawson's creek made this assessment of not debating much. >> there is no debate an 80-year-old man if he lives he will be the oldest sitting president in the history of the country and if he doesn't live as a vice president his approval late ring is worse tha. what about the will of the people? >> what is your take on that? >> i understand the president puts the party in power and he deserves to have a say of the seven majority of them supports biden but many want another choice and the only way you can do that is have other people get in the race. have a debate unless the voters decide. this is the anti-democracy. this is not democracy it's basically being told you have no choice. it's not the democrat party, is just what we say, you've got to do. >> good to have you on.
9:11 pm
>> good to see you. >> in the wake of anti-woke backlash against bud light and target chick-fil-a is dealing with fed up customers who hired a inclusion chief. more on that story. >> the culture wars are hitting the bottom line for a lot of big corporations as conservatives call out companies they believe are not reflecting their values. chick-fil-a has for a long time been strongly supported by many conservatives precisely because of the corporate mission to glorify god and its previous opposition to same-sex marriage but now, some conservatives are calling out to chick-fil-a for in their words, going woke because it has eye diversity equity and inclusion policy and
9:12 pm
a gei officer. is not clear why the cry is coming now given that the policy and the position have been in place since at least 2021. the financial impact of conservative anger against chick-fil-a is not clear but is far more obvious for other brands. target has been targeted for stocking a line of items for pride month that offended shoppers. two weeks ago the company's share price was above $160 it closed today at hundred $30. wiping billions off targets of value and anheuser-busch suffered after bud light used trans activist dylan mulvaney in a social media campaign. those losses are the result of a perfectly legal exercising of consumer power but threats against workers at target stores in particular and that's where company executives and law enforcement officials say a line gets crossed but there is clearly a cultural war going on
9:13 pm
here. >> indeed there is, jonathan. thank you. >> the fox news at night, since department noticed gavin newsom loves to tweet and he is pretty good at it. routinely getting 20 or 30,000 likes.unfortunately newsom likes to tweet about anything but the state he was elected to run. the governor has not used his personal account to post a single message about california in nine days. not a peep about the nation's largest state instead he tweets about gun laws in texas abortion laws in south carolina and imaginary book bands in florida for a guy who claims he has no interest in being president he tweets a lot about ron desantis.it's all odd because desantis does not tweet back. maybe he has bigger things going on. common sense thinks newsom should revisit the old adage
9:14 pm
about those who lives in glass houses because if you live your days criticizing other state policies it would stand to reason your state policies would be shipshape.you have a handle on crime, homelessness, power grid issues, taxes, budget issues, tax and housing prices and some of the lowest test scores of the country. common sense thinks that the next time newsom grabs his iphone to tweet he should put a pause on those aspirations and give california the once over. >> the purge aggressive push for reparations in california appears to have inspired a group of activists in west oakland demanding compensation for climate change or as they call it, climate justice. marianne is here with more on this story. >> some activists are telling npr reparations could be a form of climate justice alleviating health hazards experienced by communities of color like oakland where rising sea levels threaten to contaminate soil this comes weeks after a task
9:15 pm
force voted to approve recommendations that may california one step closer to becoming the first state in the us to pay reparations to african-american residents at a price tag believed to be in the billions per the task force reports suggest payments could be calculated based on losses due to certain kinds of racial harms and that includes healthcare disparities, discrimination in housing and mortgage lending, policing and over incarceration and evaluation of black-owned businesses. black californians are more affected by climate change due to redlining or clustering of black californians that constitute heat islands and the worsening heat waves that will propose health burdens on black californians. the reparations agreement has a long way to go is legislation must be voted through the california legislature and signed by governor gavin newsom. >> let's bring in reformed chairman great to have you on.
9:16 pm
climate reparations. it seems like we are just getting rolling on this whole reparations bandwagon. >> everyone is getting a whole package of reparation reparations in california. who's going to pay for this? i have asked it and i haven't heard. california used to create scholars and were used to create business innovators and now we create victims. everybody is a victim but i want to talk about reparations for californians who have schools that have failed their kids. what about blacks being disproportionately affected? two thirds of california students cannot pass math proficiencies and reading and writing but you cut the numbers by racial lines, 80 percent of african-american students failed both math and reading writing proficiencies. you want to talk about compensation, who is the victim of crimes? who has lost jobs all of these
9:17 pm
things are real policies that could be changed but they are doing monopoly money giveaways with these reparations. >> and the numbers are heartbreaking. but moving on to insurance companies leaving california a man moved his company from california to texas. >> i think in the pretext they are reasons but there is an unspoken reason and that reason it is california is a very difficult place to do business and i bet you state farm said we are done with this. >> he is not the only guy who says this people are saying this state makes it impossible to do business here. >> he is talking about state farm household insurance company representing 20 percent of the market. 1/5 homeowners has a policy. state farm announced we were pulling out and no more policies will be issued. why? it is a state that is killing business. it's hostile to business and people are fleeing. >> california this is
9:18 pm
california i'm going to play this. they want to go to herders. instead of paying 4000, they want to be paid 14,000 a week which the owners of the goats can't afford. here is the senior correspondent. watch great speaker oceanside california 200 goats hired by san diego gas and electric clear brush under power lines ahead of fire season. this could and by the california labor federation bill that turns goat hoarders into goat herders into farmers paying tied in and a half ? time and 1/2. and gonzalo says it's about protecting workers. >> to make sure the workers associated with it are being abused. if the union bill goes through their pay will jump to $14,000 a month, more than most can't afford.
9:19 pm
>> we cannot fix the current legislation we will be forced to sell these goats to slaughter. >> in a month this canyon will be dry and brown and wildfire would rip through here in a matter of minutes endangering home so the land owners spend $1000 an acre for the goats to clear the vegetation. they don't complain, they show up every day on time and sober. in oceanside california, fox news. >> the secret is, we need those goats because without them the fires are worse. >> environmentalists don't want other forms of fuel reduction in clearing of brush so they have accepted goats because it's natural. the individuals who are herders, many are from peru, they are here illegally earning $3600 per month plus housing is provided so it's a good job. none of them are saying they are being victimized as
9:20 pm
gonzalez falsely alleges but can you imagine 14,000 a month? we are in the wrong business. i will say the ratio of the la unified school district employees to students is one in four ratio of a goatherd or is one to 400 goats. it might be a bit more difficult than being an la unified school district teacher. >> you have any idea why gavin newsom just tweets about other states and not his own? >> he is obviously running for president. he is the guy at the back of the room. if anything goes wrong at the white house i am hanging out in the lobby. >> thank you. >> hundreds of amazon workers walked off the job because the company wants them in the office three days a week and they claim not being allowed to work remotely will screw up their schedule. the injustice is coming up and later, it's wedding season.
9:21 pm
are you up for an out of this world experience? many couples are rushing to be the first to say i do in space. would you get married in space? would you attend a wedding in space? let us know on twitter and instagram. give us your thoughts on boldly going where no wedding has gone before. >>

9:27 pm
he can view the document but only in a secure space. he said that does not hit the level of the fbi cooperating with a congressional subpoena. i asked former house intel committee chair nunez what advice he would have. >> there is no way in holy hell that ray should be able to get away with what he got away with in 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 and don't even get started with what durham uncovered where nobody was prosecuted, the doj and fbi. they are hopelessly corrupt if i can put it lightly. >> director ray issued a statement offering to look at the document in person. >> first up into nights crime roundup five teens were ? after they beat up three off-duty marines in california. a sergeant said more arrests are likely but no one else is

it was out of nowhere. just walking down the street and from what i learned it was a straight out assault. >> this man was arrested after he was caught on camera sitting this truck on fire the arsonist lit up dozens of cars over the past few months local residents as you might imagine are relieved. and a ross store manager in denver told cbs colorado they get ransacked by thieves four times a day on average. she said the company won't allow them to touch or follow the criminals where they could lose their jobs so the crooks could basically take what they please and off they go. >> hundreds of amazon employees walked out of their seattle offices today in a protest against the company's return to office mandate failure to reduce its carbon footprint. let's praying in seattle talk radio host jason, great to see you. let's listen to some of these employees reasoning for the walkout break

>> the options that seem to be given are do what you are told or quit. and that's why we're here. i am not going to quit and i am not going to do this. >> i am not na?ve that the shift to remote work will take some adjustments but the benefits far outweigh the adjustments. >> apologies i should have told you there was a soundbite but my favorite line, the person who says i am not going to go back. i am not going to quit but i'm not going to go back. >> what are you going to be doing at that point? >> you have a job. you are supposed to go to the office. there were a lot of folks who did not want to go back to normal. these are the people who are still wearing their masks outside and to them i say, i went on amazon and i bought the world's smallest violin and i shall play it in front of them as they complained constantly about the horrors of going into

the office three days a week. these are people who make 150,000 to 200,000 a year of this is what they are complaining about. all while pretending that they are more efficient working at home and somehow they are able to do their laundry, watch a show on television, make dinner early, get everything prepped for the rest of the week. you are clearly not as efficient at home. just go back into the office and be grateful you have a job at amazon. >> vase is has to be on his yacht thinking those people need to get it together. so quoting here over the weekend 500 peacekeepers were on duty in 102 designated hotspots. these are the ones who are replacing pea officers paid 14 neighborhoods that have accounted for half the city's laying 59 people got shot in chicago over the weekend. 11 of them horrifically died.
9:32 pm
>> you have two different groups of people we are looking towards to replace police officers pdf social workers and peacekeepers which are effectively trying to do the job of a social worker but without any training in the training that they have is folks who are former gang members, demographics that have been more likely to be involved and i think there's some value in hearing their perspective from a law enforcement position but putting them out there in place of cops is not the right move. how about if we put resources into the police department so they can do their jobs and if you're going to use these peacekeepers use them to create a bridge between the community and law enforcement so there is not so much distrust. >> usa today by nancy armour

what usa today calls fairness is bigotry. don't be fooled by the people who screech about fairness to cloak their bigotry towards transgender girls and women they have the audacity to want to play sports in particular, they have the audacity to be in male bodies bigger stronger male bodies and want to play sports against females. your final thoughts. >> here is something we should not be fooled by. lame comments like that that are meant to silence people who were purely pointing out something that is not controversial. it is unfair for biological women to have to compete against biological men. at the end of the day this has nothing to do with bigotry and everything to do with fairness. this is not controversial but you had a folks on the left who like to use transgender people as human props so they can signal their virtue. >> thank you. appreciate it. >> first up into nights real news roundup conservative christian rapper has topped itunes charts with his song called boycott target the song was released last week in

kershaw said this to the los angeles times. this has nothing to do with the lgbt q community or pride. this is simply a group making fun of a religion that i don't agree with. they were doing more than making fun but you get the gist. do you agree with him? what are your thoughts? >> i agree with him and what he is referring to is disgusting. and i love to see not just picture mac being red pill but thousands of families across the nation that want to deactivate the progressive machine that seeks to obliterate reality and morality and i am seeing that at these public libraries i am reading these books of virtue and wisdom that they are saying thank you for coming to these broken cities because we want the stuff for our kids. >> you go into these places traditionally are great cities and the past three or four years they have really taken a hit. >> seattle is stunningly
