supreme court set to release new rulings any moment. a big one we're waiting for will decide the fate of president biden's student loan relief plan. the court must decide whether the administration has the legal authority to cancel hundreds of billions of dollars worth of student debt held by millions of americans. welcome to a new hour of "america's newsroom." i'm dana perino. >> bill: good morning. >> dana: what? >> bill: for later. i'm bill hemmer, good morning at home. the nation awaiting the supreme court decision on the student loan bail-out. at stake forgiving more than $4 billion in student debt allowing people who received the federal loans to keep that money in their pocket. some lawmakers are pushing to repeal the president's plan for student hand-outs. grady trimble live at fox business on the hill. let's start there, grady. good morning. >> good morning to you, bill. the debt ceiling vote is getting most of the attention here right now.
7:02 am
but another vote could happen as early as today that would undo president biden's student loan cancellation plan. the resolution already passed the house. it would scrap student debt forgiveness of up to $20,000 under the president's plan and it would require borrowers to start making payments again. those payments have been paused since the start of the pandemic. >> for the party behind a long list of pandering giveaways, student loan socialism just might actually take the cake. >> we should be in the business of helping americans saddled with student loan debt not making their problem worse. >> despite the opposition from most democrats, senators joe manchin and john tester helped the resolution clear a key procedural hurdle yesterday along with kyrsten sinema. manchin says biden's proposal forces taxpayers who paid off their loans or didn't go to

college at all to shoulder the costs for those who did. the white house has already said it plans to veto this resolution if it ends up on the president's desk. but once again republicans are clearly sending a message that they do not agree with the president's policies in this case student debt forgiveness. >> bill: grady, nice to see you, live on when hill for us. >> dana: i think the president has been looking for an off ramp for this for a while. i think because the president knows it is not legal, he is waiting for the supreme court to say so and he can turn to somebody like elizabeth warren saying they are blocking the student debt relief plan and force borrowers to pay back and claw back debt relief from public servants. a slap in the face to working people. that's where the debate will go from here. >> bill: if we were student and signed a contract we would think we had to fulfill that contract and pay the money.
7:04 am
>> dana: unless you are told by democratic leaders for so long you won't have to and then you would be mad. >> bill: that would be a magical world growing up. >> dana: not the world we live in. >> bill: see what the justices decide. maybe comes down in a moment. >> dana: more from kevin mccarthy here. >> tonight we'll do something we haven't done before. tonight we are going to vote for the largest savings in american history. over $2.1 trillion. that's what we'll vote on. >> every great nation that has over extended itself has collapsed. >> dana: kevin mccarthy as the house passed the bill sending it to the senate. karl rove, former white house deputy chief of staff and fox news contributor. one question about the debt ceiling and we have a lot of

politics in 2024 to ask you about. kevin mccarthy, does he actually really face a leadership test from some of the republicans next week as they are intimating? >> well, i think they will talk about it. in the end it won't amount to much. think about it. step back a couple of months. he was not expected to be able to forge an agreement among republicans that would allow the house to pass a bill to -- for anything but a clean debt ceiling. he couldn't coble together enough votes to trim back spending and he did. then difficult to get it passed because he would face anger within his own party over the deal. again, it passed. and now the battle is over in the senate and the senate has already said we only have one alternative. to pass the bill that the house sent to us. the guy who has driven this truck, the guy the speaker of

the house who won after 15 votes and thought to be in a weak position to govern but has demonstrated even with that difficult victory to get elected speaker, he has been able to very effectively govern as speaker. >> bill: i think that line every great nation that overextended itself has collapsed. that's true. we're still at 31 trillion and growing. we're watching ron desantis last hour in new hampshire now and see donald trump later tonight at a town hall in iowa. the president in colorado making a speech later today. it really feels like we have turned the knob now on this election campaign. here is where we think we are in the republican field. fox news polling trump at 53, desantis 20, mike pence five and on down the line with haley and ramaswamy at 4% each. next week i think if we have this conversation a few weeks ago we would believe the field would be single digits.
7:07 am
can we agree on that? i thought that's how it was shaping up. mike pence is getting in next week, chris christie is getting in next week. sununu hasn't made a decision. how big does it grow, karl? >> well, i'm not surprised by any of this thus far. the question is and sununu addressed it in the previous hour. the question is not how big is the field now but how big is the field when we get ready to vote next year? he is right. there is a sentiment inside the republican party if you've got a shot. you get the opportunity to go out and do something this year. if you don't have it together and it is clear you aren't going to be able to get it together, then you need to get out and the field needs to be smaller. it won't be 17 people like we had last time to start. it will be less than ten, i think, this time around and it will slim up as we go along. but we are so focused on all these polls and the national
7:08 am
polls are interesting but the key will be what happens in the individual states. remember, each state has a different tempo. in iowa they are late to make up their minds and why people like mike huckabee and rick santorum and ted cruz were in single digits in the middle and fall of the year before we went to vote and yet won the iowa caucuses in january or february of their election year. iowa makes a decision and as a result we have surprises. the last time we had somebody win iowa who led at this point was in 2000 on the republican side. so we have to be a little careful. the national polls are interesting and nice to see what kind of movement there may be later on in the year as people get better known. the key is what's happening in the early states of

community. bill, we reached out yesterday to the loudon county sheriff's office to see if law enforcement is shutting it down. they tell fox news they are investigating the matter but no charges filed at this time. >> bill: nice to have you on. griff jenkins in d.c. further to the northeast we roll back to new hampshire. we told you the knob was turning on this campaign, right? this is democratic presidential candidate robert f. kennedy junior. he is in new hampshire at the state senate. drop on in. >> i am here because i am going to put my name in this primary and state. i oppose the dnc's decision to take away new hampshire's status. it is more of a tradition, new hampshire plays a critical role in vetting candidates for the rest of the country. [applause]
7:14 am
in other parts of the united states, the states are content with having politicians come in with money they have gotten from billionaires and with advertising or oh nationally rallies that are orchestrated where the crowds have been screened and they are a theater democracy. here politicians get real democracy and they encounter people at hair salons, barbershops, they have to talk to the 80-year-old lady who reads the financial time and economists every week and asks a follow up question that they will never get from cnn, never get it from "the new york times" even. and it is retail politics.
7:15 am
and they are vetting our candidates the same way they would vet the city council candidate or local mayor. and they do it for the rest of the country. the other thing that's very important about new hampshire is that 42 percenters of the people in this state are registered independents. the highest of any state. the importance of that right now is that those are people who are critical thinkers, independent thinkers and they are able to step outside of that paralyzing iceberg of partisanship that has our country at each other's throats. they're able to look at candidates without the ideology blocking their vision and really judge the candidates on what they say and be open to new ideas that are not locked in that ideological razor grip.
7:16 am
right now it's particularly important in new hampshire that we have a real democracy and a democratic election in new hampshire. there are so many americans who believe that this system is rigged. the economic system but also the political system. that the elections are fixed. new hampshire has the gold standard for political elections. people don't question the results and we ought to be the democratic party out to be making this election a template for democracy to our country and to the rest of the world and say we will have real democracy where candidates meet, human beings are questioned by them and have town halls and deal with all of the difficulties of retail politics. >> bill: sounds a bit old school for a politician. that's robert f. kennedy junior speaking in new hampshire dealing with a voice box issue for himself for years now so
7:17 am
that explains the voice there, too. if you listen to him talk, he is an old school democrat. he will go out there and talk about the environment and pollution and keeping the water clean. doesn't talk about solar panels or electric vehicles or green new deals or batteries. it comes from a different era trying to make a run in the democratic nomination. >> dana: if you are a democrat and looking for an alternative. he is there new hampshire is mad at president biden for trying to take away its first in the nation status and moving the first state to south carolina. so i think the republicans are more than happy to allow rfk junior to have this opportunity today and we were glad to bring it to you as well as the candidates roll on today. >> no longer are we going to capitulate to oppressors. no longer are we going to put our hope in their depraved consciousness. >> dana: public law school graduate in new york city
