them so to be able to talk to these veterans while we still can is so important to share their stories and make sure young people hear their stories, that means everything. griff: and the story of why your museum and foundation is in bedford, virginia is a story of the bedford boys and thought to be the worst per capita casualty of anybody. there were some 19 bedford boys in that invasion that were a part of company a, 116th regiment, 20th bedford boy died from company f that day, talk to me about that story for our viewers that may not know it. >> that's right. the highest per capita loss of any community in the nation because this was a national guard unit. this was the national guard unit that went in on the first wave of the assault on omaha beach on d day. they took the brunt of that early fire as they are coming in and sadly as you said 19 from

company a, one from company f were killed within minutes of the landing on omaha beach. it was something that this community never got over. they never recovered from this. it's something that we feel very deeply to this day which is why the efforts many years to place the nation's monuments to d day, this seemed like an appropriate place not only to remember bedford boys, it's to remember all those who took parton the momentous day that enabled us to secure and have the freedoms that we have today. over 4,415 americans and allies would lose their lives just on june the sixth alone and we commemorate that as well as those who lived to fight another day to preserve freedoms for us. griff: you're seeing on the screen amazing pictures from the d day memorial there in bedford. i had the honor and coming and interviewing you can greta on the 70th anniversary 9 years ago

and people still continue to come all year long. why is it important, april, that young people come to the memorial and learn about d day? >> it's such a pivotal part of our history. truly it was the most momentous event of the last century and now that we are losing our veterans it's so important that young people understand their stories, that they understand why d day is important today, why d day matters. dye d -- d day matters and there was so much that was lost in terms of those sacrifices but so much that was gained to be able to move through france, to get get to germany to put an end and to rebuild europe, you know, d day allowed us to move forward with eventually with the marshal plan, the rebuilding of europe, taking care of those pow's and

those that -- giving hope to people everywhere and i think d day is the legacy that we have to pass on that june 6th matters that we have to let young people know that we should never forget the sacrifices that were made on the beaches that day by land, air and sea and let's let our veterans know who are still with us that we are passing on their legacy, that this will not be forgotten. griff: they are, indeed, the greatest generation and those studying history, d day was going to be on june 5th, the weather was bad but it was the sixth, eisenhower telling the troops that would launch into that some so young, inexperienced that the world was, quote, watching, i think their legacy is secure. april, thank you very much for taking the time. i just ask you in the last 20 seconds i've got, what are you doing on tuesday there at the museum? >> we are actually going to have a number of world war ii veterans was, quite a few of

them over 100 year's old. we can't wait to honor them. we can't wait to tell some of their stories, we will have a lot of people from all over the country as we take special remembrance of that day and commemorate those veterans who were with us. it'll be spectacular. griff: april, thank you so much for the work that you do and good luck on tuesday, that's really remarkable to have the world war ii vets still with us to tell those stories. thank you very much. >> thank you. so. thank you. griff: you know, aishah, when i went there it's amazing to see the history and know the world could be very different had they not made the sacrifice that day. aishah: somebody about visiting it in person. i went there right before the pandemic hit and i was looking at pictures during the interview. something to see in person. griff: fox news live continues with eric and arthel i'm griff jenkins. aishah: and i'm aishah.
