residenced, a small aircraft crashed in rural vi virginia, lucas is live with more. reporter: it started with the loud sonic boom here. and felt as far as annapolis maryland, dc national guard, scrambling alert fighter jets, we received a statement from norad, i'll go through the highlights: a business jet. over washington dc, norad aircraft were authorized to tramp at supersonic speeds, the norad aircraft used flairs in an attempt to draw attention from the pilot, the civilian aircraft was intercepted approximately 3:20 p.m. eastern time, the pilot was up responsive.

norad attempted to establish contact with the pilot until the aircraft crashed, no radio contact with the pilot, sounds he was unresponsive. the flight path that cessna citation business jet took off from a city in northeast, tennessee, and up to long island, it was supposed to land in islip before it turned and flew back on a southwesterly course. the f-16s were moving at su supersonic speeds that is 761 miles per hour, there no indication that the plan plane was shot down by the f-16. >> thank you. >> we bring in jennifer

griffin. i know you have been learning new information in the last hour, what you can share with us. reporter: i spoke with norad several times in the last few hours, we have learned in addition to the two f-16s, that took off from andrews air force base. they responsible for the sonic boom that people heard here in washington, d.c., those two f-16s were joined by two f-16 fighter pilots from a new jersey base outside of atlantic city. there were 4 f-16s involved, i'm told dc national guard found the pilot unresponsive and intercepted the plane and watched as plane actually went down over the george washington national forest that sneer montebello -- that is near montebello, a lot of alarm, but we understand from secret

service that the president's security detail, there was no security hightened security for the president at that time. the plane had already crossed closer to stanton. we're getting unconfirmed reports there was one pilot and three passengers on board, but we're waiting to confirm the identities as well as more details of the flight. it is very notable that the pilot was unresponsive according to f-16 pilots when they fired the flairs. monorad reiterates they did not shoot down the plane. >> this is guy benson, we hear that term unresponsive, could that be a medical emergency or unwilling or a potential threat? or a tragic accident. reporter: i think if there

had been a threat you would have seen a greater security alert in dc area, we heard briefly that security was raised at the capitol but only briefly, i believe the pilots in terms of unresponse unresponsive. we don't know w at this time it is not able change in path of pilot en route to long island from tennessee. that you know it is not able it turned around at one point. it might have gone into an autopilot mode. the pilot being unresponsive clearly indicates there may have been some sort of a medical emergency. >> a quick question about

the airspace that just flew over, i heard jon scott reporting since 9/11 you have to have advanced permission to flyover washwashington d.c., can you comment on that? reporter: yes, these protocols having the f-16s on alert status at andrews and up and down the east coast, i have flown with those f-16 fighter pilots in the back of an f16 from andrews up to new york. circles aron the statue of liberty and back that was put in place after 9/11 for incidents like this, in case there were some incursion into airspace, they are always on alert that is why you have norad, they protect homeland, this is seems as though the system worked today, the four of f-16s

launched as soon as the threat was known, we don't know status of the pilot or passengers, but i can assume very serious situation. >> jennifer, mollie hemingway here, the f-16 pilots that inters intercepted this cessna citation. when we get an update on what they saw? when will we expect that and what would that type of update look like? reporter: i think, yes, i think at-this-point you have multiple agent agencies involved, not just norad, you have the national guard involved as well as norad. but you also have the faa, they will now takeover and investigate the ntsb, once you get the multiple agencies i also have state

troopers in virginia looking for the wreckage. now you have protocols in place where 'multiple agencies involved details have to go through those agencies, i imagine we will get more details, when they are released, at-this-point, i think they will want to know more about the status of the pilot, the passengers and the recover efforts now are still on going. >> jennifer tom shillue, i have a question about the way you work when something like this happens, the news is breaking, who do you call first? norad or pentagon or white house? or all of the above? who is your first go-to? >> the first call for me when this happened i wasn't working i got the message from fox. there was breaking news, my first call hearing the sketchy details was to call
