8:09 am
i don't subscribe to the narrative that too many candidates in the race will help donald trump. the republican party is not the party of group think. but the question we should be asking ourselves is who can we' elect that can win in november? if we want to do things like bend back inflation, address the national debt. address the federal deficit and want to fix the border problem. the crisis happening at the border. if we want to win the cold war with china we need to win in november. we know donald trump can. a proven loser. we know we lost the house in 2018 because of him. lost the white house and senate in 2020 and the red wave didn't materialize. he hasn't grown his brand with independents and conservative democrats. that's the question republicans should be asking ourselves. if we elect donald trump, then we are willingly going to lose

to joe biden in 2024. >> julie: i want to bring that up. a couple things against him. for those maga supporters, the hard core trump supporters, they will see mike pence as a sell-out by turning his back not only on the president because, of course, donald trump is running for president, also they blame him for what they call stolen election. as we know the facts turned out to prove those theories. you've got that. then you have the other side that says look, we want a change. we want nothing to do with the former administration and therefore by reelecting a former vice president under the trump administration you don't get that, either. you are damned if you do or don't if you're mike pence. do you think it might be the case for him? >> well look, i think that the prognosis for mike pence in this race is not very good. a, because of what you said is he pro-trump or anti-trump, where did he come out on all this mess? he would say he is pro conviction and did what was right. the bottom line here is that he
8:11 am
was vice president for four years. he had tremendous national exposure. unlike the other candidates, the tim scotts who didn't have national exposure, if really vice president pence had a good shot, he would have very significant numbers in the polls today. he doesn't. so that suggests he is not going to really with this additional exposure get anywhere. i wonder really why he entered the race given this basic fact. >> julie: the former v.p. will try to disentangle himself from trump. pence's play will be to reintroduce himself as a tested conservative adding in an alternative universe mike pence might be leading the race for president in 2024. 12 years in the house, four as governor of indiana and then four as vice president. will, his conservative values,

okay? we haven't seen a staunch conservative in the white house in a while. old school republicans would like to see that back when it comes to abortion, he wants to enact banning abortion after 15 weeks and like to see the abortion pill be taken off the market all together. he is a christian. he would be obviously an appeal to the evangelical christians that very much want a conservative party figure. how much is personality going to play a role here. if you compare him to a ron desantis who also has very conservative values and views and the state of florida has been doing quite well since the pandemic, his personality stands out. that's where mike pence might be, i don't know, a little weaker as a candidate. >> we have to go back to the old school. do you want to have a beer with either one of those folks? >> julie: i say that every time i meet a new mom. would i drink with her? i guess it should apply to politics as well. >> people hang out. look, there is no question mike
8:13 am
pence is conservative. i enjoyed working with him when i was in congress. but again, he has four years is a lot of things to disentangle yourself from and so that will be a problem with a large part of voters. how does that help in november? we have to make sure we're putting somebody up who can appeal to independents and conservative democrats. that's the opportunity. joe biden's numbers are terrible. he is one of the worst polling at this time of any president. that's the opportunity for republicans and we have to make sure that we are putting forward a good candidate. we have to make sure we're making the case for a modern republican party. and i don't know if there are many candidates making that case. >> julie: look at joe biden. mark, he campaigned as a moderate but not a moderate whatsoever. i think this country would like to see a moderate.
8:14 am
it is hard to trust what we are electing into office these days. >> well, i think that's right. i think that the country has wanted a moderate for a long time. and people have run as moderates and then veered to the left or veered to the right and they are looking for, i think, the magic moderate in this election. we'll see if we get one or if they get the old choices. they'll be very dissatisfied. >> julie: pence said he never goes to an event without his wife is alcohol is served there. a follow up question as to why. i'm curious. i found it to be a fun fact. thank you both, appreciate it. later today newly minted candidate mike pence is joining america reports. it will be his first official interview post announcement at 2:30 eastern time. stay tuned to that. don't want to miss it. the big apple is in big trouble.

in birmingham, alabama. he has been transferred to another prison in peru as a temporary holding sight and handed over to f.b.i. custody tomorrow. van der sloot, who is dutch, is in the middle of serving a 28 year sentence for the 2010 murder of a woman from peru. peruvian authorities agreed to allow a temporary extradition to allow federal authorities to try van der sloot on alleged financial crimes against the family of natalee holloway, the alabama teen who disappeared during a high school graduation trip to aruba in 2005. van der sloot offered to reveal the location of her body in exchange for a quarter million dollars. when her mother made a down payment. he provided her a bogus location and no body has been found. although van der sloot remains the prime suspect in natalee's disappearance investigators are unable to gather enough evidence

to charge him in that case. it is their hope on trying him in financial crimes in the u.s. may uncover more information. >> it may be a negotiation point that the federal government here gives him an opportunity for a lesser sentence to come clean with proof of what happened to natalee in aruba. >> if convicted on the federal wire fraud and extortion charges here in the u.s. van der sloot would still have to first return to peru to finish his murder sentence before serving any time here in the u.s. julie. >> julie: thank you so much. jonathan serrie. leo terrell, civil rights attorney joins me now. this case dates back to 2005. i was in aruba with the parents when their daughter went missing. i've met van der sloot and met his dad and all the players. the holl ways never got justice
8:53 am
and sad the only way they may get justice is on fraud charges. >> the holloway family wants closure. not a conviction of wire fraud. they want to know the whereabouts of their daughter, natalee. what you are hoping for is some type of deal being cut with proof, with exact proof. you cannot trust this monster. he is a liar. he is a professional liar and as a tendency to traffic women, in my opinion. the whole purpose of this hearing is for him to hopefully cut a deal and find the whereabouts of natalee holloway. he gets to land on american soil and he will be in the hometown of natalee holloway. >> julie: he allegedly killed natalee in 2005. he killed a 21-year-old peruvian
8:54 am
girl five years later. he is serving 28 years behind bars. is it too late for authorities to try to strike a deal with him in order to get answers as to the whereabouts of natalee holloway's remains? >> first of all he is serving 28 years in that murder case. to answer your question, no. he will be on american soil and he will get convicted of wire fraud. he will have to serve another 20 some odd years. in order to avoid that, it is possible he can talk. he can squeal. but the f.b.i. will not trust him. they want verifiable proof. the key here is to find the whereabouts and remains of natalee holloway. that's what the holloway family wants. it is not impossible, julie. just a matter will this guy squeal. >> julie: a lot of theories that he didn't act alone. he was out with friends that night. his dad, a former sheriff on the island of aruba had to know something. he is no longer around.
8:55 am
it is sad. they may never get answers on her whereabouts. >> can i say this? if anyone honestly believes this man does not know where the remains of natalee holloway's body is, they are in a fog. this guy knows, julie. he knows. >> julie: i agree with you. i was there. i remember. he knows. thank you, thank you for watching "the faulkner focus." i'll be back here on friday. see you then. with carbsteady to help you manage your blood sugar. and more protein to keep you moving with diabetes. glucerna live every moment with 32 years in the navy, i know personally what it means to be deployed and how much we want to put down roots when we come home. as a veteran, you've earned the right to apply for a va home purchase loan, with no down payment. with the newday va loan, you don't have to save up to move up. helping veterans buy a home of their own. that's what we do. from newday usa.
