this, flight delays have just been catastrophic, more than 5,000 yesterday. with temporary at temporary ground stops at newark, lawrgsd and philadelphia international airport. predicted flight delays today. we could be looking at more than 300 of those. so this is going to continue to be a serious problem, both governor kathy hochul and mayor eric adams is speaking out today. we expect to hear more from them later on today. of the things they are trying to do to protect those living in the city is handing out masks as more than 100 wildfires continue to burn all across the quebec area. more than 400,000 high quality mask to be made for the public today. they are expecting an additional several tens of thousands coming from the department of homeland security, guys. these are just small things that they hope can help those people that do need to walk or commute to work today to try to give them some kind of protection from all of this pollution.
3:04 am
>> steve: there is plenty of pollution this morning. nicole, thank you for the live report. >> brian: better today than it did last night. >> ainsley: measures from 0 to 500. janice says the highest it goes is 500. and certain parts of pennsylvania it's almost all the way up there yesterday we had 353 in new york. normal for new york is about 100. >> steve: and look at that that is the view from one of our sky cams right now, courtesy of total traffic. yesterday, during the midday, it looked -- everything was yellow. it looked like -- if you were on the surface of mars, that's what it looked like. i have heard from family members all across the country said what's it smell like? what does it taste like? yesterday, when i was sitting here in the studio, when we turned on the air conditioner it actually smelled like some burning wood. >> ainsley: you could smell it. >> steve: you could shot smell it because covid: that's what
3:05 am
it looks like when it looks like the surface of mars. yesterday afternoon i realized it kind of smells like somebody smoking a pipe. just somebody smoking a pipe. it's not like bacon or wood punch. it was like a pipe yesterday. >> ainsley: all the moms in my daughter's class were writing us. we have a text chain. should we pick up the kids early? how do you feel about this. the school says they will do indoor recess and not going to go up to the roof which is where the kids -- that's how they play outside in new york city. she said we are going to keep the kids indoors today and then sent out email we're canceling the street fair. today is the last day of school. got that message last night. all the kids were upset they have had to cancel the last three years because of covid and it's so awesome. now different reasons. during covid we were wearing masks inside. now we are all wearing our masks outside. >> brian: i don't know if that will work. also the yankee game was canceled. maybe it should have been canceled two days ago on
3:06 am
tuesday. but they canceled it on wednesday. see if they get flights out on time. did i notice how much better it looked this morning come in. >> ainsley: i felt like it looked yesterday morning, too. it got worse as the day produced. >> steve: it absolutely did. it got much hazier, talking to my son down in washington. it started to redirect where the heavy stuff was through portions of pennsylvania. yesterday, in new york city, we had the worst air on the planet. it was 56 times over the world health organization's pollution limit. and we doubled tomi typical frontrunners like the united arab emirates and pakistan and india. it was absolutely hard to breath. the cover of the "new york post" today wraps it up. blame canada. the headline says canuck wildfires plunged new york city into ear eerie smoky hell. >> ainsley: that makes me sad because janice is from canada. we are not blaming you, janice.
3:07 am
>> brian: right. >> ainsley: they can't help it. a lot of wildfires that are there. the smoke is going south because of the winds and we are feeling the effect of it. >> brian: everyone is using this a.o.c. and senator schumer president biden as well. burning in 2020 record lows in canada was it not climate change then? >> steve: it's forest management. >> brian: could be. >> steve: it is. >> brian: better at it than us and that was one thing that we heard that we should do things like canada for the longest time when the president was walking -- when the former president was walking through the woods with gavin newsom. and now we see canada has their forests going on fire well just climate change. >> ainsley: is this what happens when we report on forest fires in california? is this what they go through regularly? >> brian: i don't remember. this. >> steve: they have better forest management in california. the problem is janice. >> brian: california is known as
3:08 am
awful forest management. >> steve: all because we had such a dry winter. >> ainsley: the snow. >> steve: didn't get enough snow. >> brian: it wasn't dry in california. >> ainsley: sending firefighters. put the fire out. >> steve: there are 400 fires. as i mentioned a moment ago, some of the worst air in pennsylvania. here's reaction from some folks in the city of brotherly love where yesterday just kind of hard to breathe. >> i just noticed like the smog in the air. so that's why i'm keeping a mask on just to stay safe. >> we slept with the windows open. i feel it. i have a headache. used to putting my mask on in the trolley. coming out of the trolley coming down the steps i think i want my mask on. i feel like i'm getting clean air when i breathe through the mask. >> we brought my little brother back to go inside. when i got back from school my head was hurting. i don't know i was having really bad headaches and my nose
3:09 am
started bleeding. >> ainsley: i feel fine. i was walking around the city yesterday. i feel fine. >> steve: i could feel it right there. >> ainsley: babysitter said she could feel it in her throat. our assistant this morning said her eyes are a little itchy. people are experiencing this even if they don't have breathing conditions. >> brian: janice dean is here. she put together six different walls to break down exactly what we are going through. so, janice, maybe we could start if we can about what's going on actually in canada and do you know the answer to this why we didn't get a heads up on this that this was about to hit us? >> janice: because we don't follow canadian news. we had this area of high pressure across the prayeries and it just remained anchored there for a very long time and that means sinking air and temperatures were warm and then we didn't have much of a winter like here in the northeast in parts of eastern canada. so to see the maritime provinces on fire is, you know, it's historic. >> brian: right. so here on average is the amount
3:10 am
of acreage that burns over the last 10 years 370,000 acres. >> janice: 5 times. >> brian: right. then you look at what we are dealing with in may of 2023 worked its way down here. obviously not done yet. so look at that number. >> janice: we are up to 9 million acres by the way. to your point what we are talking about, canada does not have the resources to combat wildfires like this. and some areas it's like you can't access the for rest industry. that's why we are sending 600 of our firefighters to canada right now because this is unprecedented but they cannot get a handle on something like this. >> brian: let's take a look at where it is actually burning and how thick it is and hard it is to access. will edmonton slammed right now. >> janice: this is known as the prairie states like the great plains here in the united states. the western parts of canada deal with wildfires, right? elisha british columbia and we get the smoke from that in the west every single year.
3:11 am
this has spread across ontario, into quebec and the eastern provinces of canada, which again, is unprecedented. nova scotia right now is dealing with evacuations and burning buildings. >> brian: right. but wind obviously coming south and by the way see this number 233. i heard that number was up to 400. >> janice: it is. yes. >> brian: that's a little bit low. >> janice: when we talk about the smoke we have a couple factors going on. this area of low pressure in new england that has remained there for many days so the counterclockwise flow around that area of low pressure is what is bringing the winds and the smoke southward. once we kick that area of low pressure offshore in the next couple of days as another area of low moves into the midwest, that's when conditions are going to improve. it's all about the wind direction. >> brian: what about this last night? look at. >>this that's the's what is scary. the orange hue that we saw over new york city.
3:12 am
i saw folks on social media saying janice dean, i live in california, welcome to our world. >> this is what they deal with you about because we don't typically see this, it was scary. >> brian: they say that new deli usually has the worst air temporarily. the worst was 10:00 last night. we have it worse. there is the air quality. here is the worst air quality cities we are looking at. first off, this is how we rate it. >> janice: right. this is the air quality index and right now a lot of areas are into the hazardous zone where they are saying officials do not go outside at all. kids not going out to play, adults not going to work today. and that's actually happening right now in parts of pennsylvania and new jersey. >> brian: major cities, too, we're told nothing. after school sports. obviously don't go to the yankee game. they are now playing against the white sox. >> janice: this is historic to see very unhealthy and hazardous conditions for millions of folks across the northeast.
3:13 am
unprecedented, historic. we are talking about 466 in honorsburg, pennsylvania, air quality. that's never happened before. >> brian: then we look at a live shot now in new york city. what do you have a projection i know it's almost impossible. projection of what we are going to be looking at today. >> today is going to be bad. especially areas of west and south. once we get that lohse offshore and not bringing those winds from canada, that's when conditions are going to improve. i think today is going to be bad. tomorrow a little bit better. saturday much improved. >> brian: what about flights? any sense of what the airports can deal with? because pilots say they can pretty much get this with the computer systems the way it is. they could get through this. >> janice: it's all about visibility. and when you have smoke and haze like that in places like philadelphia, i don't know that we're going to get a lot of flights off the ground. >> brian: i saw a lot of delays over laguardia and jfk.
3:14 am
check the local area airports including newark especially in the northeast. >> janice: it's scary. talk to your kids, too. my kids were scared. why are school activities canceled. >> steve: why is the sky yellow. >> janice: please talk to them because they are scared, too. >> brian: also, it's temporary. one of the things that happen. also make it exciting today let's stay indoors. let's make this fun. there's nothing you can do about it and nothing we did to cause it. this is what is coming from another country. >> janice: this too shall pass. >> brian: between the pandemic and everything else going on i think the kids have been pretty resourceful. steve and ainsley, back to you. >> ainsley: great job, guys. thank you. let's bring in our air quality expert and what an expert he is harvard trained, cambridge, board member of a mo pfizer. dr. helman, thank you for being with us. >> thanks for including me. it's a pleasure to be here. >> ainsley: janice brought up a good point how do we talk about our children about this.
3:15 am
living in the northeast area. north carolina, south carolina. my daughter said we are all scared i said baby, you are okay. we are inside. you are fine. another little girl went home early. her mom said she had a panic attack. so how do we handle our children? >> yeah. so, obviously, this is very hard for kids to understand. i remember when i was a kid and living in los angeles the traffic lights changed color. the first thing to do is to mirror that you are concerned and doing something about it. specifically we can't go out and play because the air is not safe and you can say that sometimes there are things that are not safe that we can't even see like the air the cause of pollution
3:16 am
hopefully we have an air filter or a way to protect ourselves just like with will covid. >> steve: we slept with a help that filter next to the bed last night. in the middle of the day, some parts of new york city the streetlights came on at 2:00 in the afternoon because it was so dim. so, if the sun cannot filter through, obviously it's -- there's a fine particulate. who is at risk and should people actually wear a mask? clearly if you are outside. should you wear a mask inside? >> so, when it comes to inside, i think it's great that you were sitting next to a hepa filter, the problem or the issue hepa filters are not perfect in that they don't remove the tiniest of the particles. the particles thinner than the width of a human hair. that's why there is new technology using sound waves to take those really tiny particles
3:17 am
and they are dangerous, these tiny particles are dangerous because not only do you breathe them into the lungs but then they go from the lungs to your bloodstream to everywhere else, to your brain, to your heart, to your liver to your kidneys. >> ainsley: what do we look for buying a filter? sonic filter. >> i'm a board member of this company but it's called at mow pfizer. basically just a box that uses found waves to take these ultra small tiny particles and make them into bigger atmo pfizer. i call it a snowmobile effect. you take tiny particles make a big snowball and remove yes. >> steve: i think will sell a bunch of those today if we don't use it today we could use it in the future. >> they are in stock and i have heard that a lot of filters are hard to get right now. >> steve: they absolutely are. >> ainsley: i will look it up. thanks, dr. hellman.
