>> that concludes our first show of little league baseball week. >> say goodbye to everybody, bear. >> bye. >> bill: thanks, guys, good morning. check out this traffic nightmare unfolding in realtime on the east coast that could stay this way for months to come. diverting some 150,000 drivers a day who use that overpass. for their commute. good morning, everybody. bill hemmer live in new york city. a brand-new week begins. >> dana: great to be here with you. i'm dana perino. this is "america's newsroom." summer has just gotten underway and you have this problem for all those commuters. it started more than 24 hours ago in philadelphia along one of
6:01 am
the most revly traveled countries in the country. a tanker truck erupted between an i-95 overpass and spread to the lanes above that. high heat caused them to buckle and melt and eventually cause sections to crash to the ground. >> bill: a mess and still is. crews got the fire under control in an hour. the damage was done. the governor of p.a. set to issue a disaster declaration later today. one car remains trapped beneath that collapsed roadway. listen to this driver earlier today. watched it unfold and described what he saw. >> hit a bump, again not unusual because it's philadelphia and that section is under construction. after coming back knowing what i knew at that time, that the highway collapsed, you see there on the video i hit a bump that was essentially the road getting ready to collapse. >> bill: we are on the ground in
6:02 am
philadelphia. how are they looking today? >> bill, good morning to you. we're not far from the scene of the collapse. look at the charred southbound lanes behind me. demolition crews already at work this morning. commuters waking up extra early racing for traffic headaches for the foreseeable future as the cleanup and recovery for i-95 and this collapse begins. it is now closed in both directions here in northeast philadelphia. state leaders say a tanker truck carrying gasoline caught fire under the overpass. moments before the interstate collapsed some drivers traveled over the southbound lanes with seconds to spare. governor said this situation could have been much worse. now the fire's heat is what sent a portion of the northbound lane crashing down reducing it to rubble and then compromising those southbound lanes. firefighters don't know what caused the truck to catch fire. emergency crews are trying to identify if anyone was caught in
6:03 am
the collapse. right now no injuries or fatalities have been reported right now and no details on the truck driver. >> i found myself thanking the lord that no motorists on i-95 were injured or died. just a remarkably devastating -- >> transportation secretary pete buttigieg says he is closely monitoring the situation and ready to help. governor shapiro says it indicates it will be a number of months to repair this portion of the interstate. back to you. >> bill: out for some time. nice to see you this morning, cb cotton watching that for us today. thanks. >> i've seen that press report. it is not accurate. we're watching this very closely. and we will and we have and will continue to take steps to might gait any potential threat that those activities might pose to make sure, we are positive that we can continue to defend this
6:04 am
nation. >> you are saying it is not accurate they're planning this? >> i'm saying we've seen the report. it's not accurate. >> dana: that was national security council spokesman last week denying a wall street report that china made a deal with cuba to build a spy base there. less than 48 hours and the biden administration is saying it is an ongoing issue, not a new development. the arrangement in the reporting does not comport with our understanding. what's going on here? joining us now mike gallagher of wisconsin, chairman of the house select china committee. is there a disconnect? did you know that china had this base and this agreement down in cuba? >> i think the question is why is the white house down playing incidents like this? why did they deny it and backtrack and blame the trump administration? it is not just this.
6:05 am
the exact same thing played out with the chinese spy balloon incident. i'm left to conclude they're misleading the public in order to preserve their policy of diplomatic and economic engagement with the chinese communist party. this policy will not work for the same reason it has not worked for the last two decades because the ccp is not interested in wynn cooperation. they're interested in domination. we need to take off these blinders and understand who we're dealing with and stand up firmly to ccp aggression. they respect only firmness and they have contempt for those who continually give in to them. that's what really concerns me about these series of incidents. >> bill: it appears to be the case they've been working on this thing since 2019. we can agree on that based on the reporting for the past four years. we have gitmo in cuba.
6:06 am
we have our own way to either assess what they are doing or to block it. >> more to your point this is our backyard. the attempt by the ccp to turn the monroe doctrine into the -- it is across the region even government in mexico. the ccp infiltration of the panama canal, an obvious critical choke point for the global economy. their involvement with a variety of governments in south america. we've neglected our own backyard for far too long and turned a blind eye to the increasing aggression and involvement of the chinese communist party, and now incidents like this should be a massive wake-up call like the balloon incident should have been, just like the opm hack.
6:07 am
yet the biden administration is persisting with this zombie engagement. >> dana: the headline on friday was the pentagon is freaking out about a potential war with china. the reason is because they've done war gaming and doesn't look good from our side. a quote from someone who played a role in the chinese leadership in the war games. the most common thread in these exercises is that the u.s. needs to take steps now to insure the conflict doesn't happen in the future. we're hugely behind the curve. this is our watershed moments. do you agree? >> i do. we conducted that war game on the select committee on the ccp in order to in a bipartisan fashion figure out what we need to do in congress to prevent war. that's what it is all about. we move heaven and earth to put
6:08 am
hard power in xi's path before it's too late. a war with china would be very destructive. how do you prevent it? by having a credible deterrent posture. what we see from the biden administration is -- diplomacy without arms is like music without instruments. we need to do better and producing more missiles, long-range precision fires and the conclusion of our recent policy recommendations for taiwan we put out on the select committee on the ccp. we need to deter world war iii before we stumble into it. >> dana: is this part of the 2024 election? you think it's bipartisan. would you like to see some commitments from the candidates about what they would do? >> it should be front and
6:09 am
center. every single candidate should be asked about this issue. it is at a minimum a top three issue. they need to be making the case it isn't just a distant over there problem. not just a matter of territorial claims in the south or east china sea. it is a matter of defending our sovereignty from increasing communist aggression as illegal police stations on american soil, the spy balloon shows, a variety of these incidents show. this should be front and center in the 2024 election. a republican nominee has to make an effective critique of the biden foreign policy and articulate a positive vision for peace through strength going forward. >> bill: sir, thank you for your time and coming in today. maybe the phrase of the moment zombie engagement. we won't forget that. >> dana: you think about that. you look at this stuff pretty carefully. to me it sounds dispopeian. >> my feeling is antony blinken

will go to china soon since mike -- the u.s. not being able to fight a war against china. there isn't a better fighting force in the world than america. we've been at it for more than 20 years plus. >> dana: we can ask general keane. >> bill: former president and republican frontrunner donald trump set to leave for florida later today ahead of tomorrow's federal court hearing in miami. tuesday will be something. that's where he will face dozens of charges linked to his classified document scandal. his supporters are calling out a double standard saying democrats are treated differently. team fox coverage begins now. gillian turner at the white house. we start in bedminster, new

indictment seems to be no comment. both senior officials and staff are staying mum on in terms of the merits of the actual charge trump is facing. his own former attorney general, though, is not shying away from weighing in with his legal assessment. take a listen. >> shocked by the degree of sensitively of these documents and how many there were. if even half of it is true, he is toast. this idea of presenting trump as a victim here, a victim of a witch hunt, is ridiculous. >> president biden's only public comment on trump's criminal indictment came friday insisting to reporters he is staying mum. >> president biden have you spoken to attorney general merrick garland yet? >> president biden: i have not spoken to him at all and i won't speak to him. >> in light of the trump indictment? >> trump's attorneys accuse the

>> the three main threats he repeated over and over was i'm going to kill you, i'm willing to go to jail for life and willing to die. >> dana: daniel penny talking about his side of the story after being charged with the death of jordan neely. what have you learned? >> bill: the first time we're seeing daniel penny on video, a big deal. the new video clips released by his lawyers he makes the case he acted in self-defense when he put jordan neely in the fatal choke hold describing how he stepped onto the subway train. ripped off his jacket and violently threw it at people before he began yelling and

threatening passengers. the scene was so troubling he felt compelled to act. >> a common misconception that marines don't get scared. we're taught one of our core values is courage. courage is not the absence of fear but how you handle fear. and, you know, i was scared for myself but i looked around and saw women and children. he was yelling in their faces saying these threats. i couldn't just sit still. >> penny says he was trying to restrain neely, not kill him. reports that he had neely in a choke hold for 15 minutes are false. the whole incident lasted less than five. >> some people say i was trying to choke him to death. which is also not true. i was trying to restrain him. you could see in the video a clear rise and fall of his chest indicating that he is breathing. i was trying to keep him on the ground until the police came. i was praying the police would come and take this situation over. >> the 24-year-old is charged with second degree manslaughter

accused of recklessly calling neely's death. prosecutors say -- penny reportedly plans to testify in his own defense in front of a grand jury and they have been hearing this case since may 31. it is a rare move and speaks to the fact that his lawyers feel confident of his ability to tell his story. >> dana: how long will it go on? >> the grand jury term ends june 18th. it will have to happen before then. >> dana: bryan llenas, good to see you. >> bill: george soros handing over his $25 billion empire to his younger son, alex. he says he is even more political than his dad promising to funnel more money to liberal causes. marc thiessen former speech writer to george bush. good morning to you. the quote, i'm more political as much as i would love to get our money out of politics as long as

the other side is doing it, we'll have to do it too. our side has to be better about more patriotic and inclusive. just because someone votes trump doesn't mean they're lost or racist. a lot in that quote there. what does it mean big picture, marc? >> i think the soros movement is doubling down on supporting left wing candidates. they've been enormously effective when it comes to electing the liberal prosecutors across the country. $40 million over a decade. not a lot of money but elected 75 liberal prosecutors around the country. one in five americans live under a soros prosecutor. how brilliant that is. rather than spending millions lobbying to change laws they don't like. they elect one person not to enforce them. a lot of these races are down ballot races. nobody is paying attention to in off years when there is low

happening, marc? >> it's on social conservatism in particular. it shows the narrative that republicans need to downplay the social issues in order to win at the polls is wrong. if you look at that poll, 69% of americans say they're conservative or moderate when it comes to social issues. only 29% say they're liberal. as long as they are handled sensitively it is a net positive for republicans on the ballot. the reason this is happening, bill, is because the democrats have gone so far to the left on social issues. take abortion. the democratic orthodoxy safe, legal and rare. now it is taxpayer funded abortion on demand up until the moment of birth. that's not a majority position. mark penn did a poll showed that 60% of democrats say we should restrict it to 15 weeks. even the 29% who say they are socially liberal don't agree with democratic orthodoxy when
6:27 am
it comes to abortion. >> bill: the point of being so radical on social issues. you now get an easy compareson point between issues and impressions and opinions. it's pretty obvious to see what's happened in great american cities, marc. over the past 3 to 4 years. it is those policies that -- walk around new york and see the homelessness and on and on it goes. final comment on that. i want to share this graphic here. among the age groups, 30 to 49 year olds are up 39%. 50 to 64 up to 11 percent. the older you are the more conservative you become. >> that's very true. the millennials are becoming more conservative as they get older, too. it's the left pushing this radical agenda. gallup poll came out 69% of
