queer and trans nuns. correspondent jeff paul tracking that story from our west coast news room, hey, jeff. >> weeks of controversy for the dodgers finally coming to an end tonight, uninvited then reinvited lgbtq+ group of satirical nuns known as the sisters of perpetual indulgence with the team's community hero award. one hour before the game started and as can you probably see by this video that captured the moment, the stands were mostly empty. outside the stadium the message of thousands of protesters that they were sending it was abundantly clear. >> from fans to catholics, high ranking leadership within the church itself, and people of other faiths, well they are not too happy about the group being honored, grievances don't have to do with the group's
9:02 pm
charitable work, outrage is aimed at the over the top outfit that many feel mock not only nuns but the religion itself, calling it out right blasphemy, held a mass today to heal the harm caused by the dodgers. >> i have no idea why the dodgers would do this to a fan, they seen the outcry and they even apologized to the drag organization but they didn't issue no apologies to the catholics or christians. >> some who showed up to the counter protest say the outrage isn't about the outfits it's about what they stand for, lgbtq+ rights, the sisters of perpetual indulgence are targets for homophobic attacks. >> i love jesus people, people who are fighting for our future. genocide against all the people
9:03 pm
they hate, against lgbt people. even in a blue state you have drag queens dressed up as nuns this is what happened? like, this is atrocious. >> dodgers star pitcher clayton kershaw raised his objection to the group honored, he is not against pride nights, this is a group making fun a religion. kevin. >> jeff paul leading us off tonight. let's bring in andrea, a media fellow at the institute for human ecology at catholic u. before we get into our conversation, just a bit more context from what jeff was talking about, how folks lead off their pregame air monday knee, listen and watch as the dodgers celebrate this group. >> outstanding service.
9:04 pm
>> so, you heard the boos there, the crowd was sparse for pregame. i live i had in los angeles, there is a lot of dodgers fans, a lot of giants in the stadium. there was traffic to be fair, the protests outside, your thoughts on what you saw there, the dodgers said, for their service to their lgbtq community and they also said for their promotion of gay rights, i'm not sure how gay rights and offending catholics are in the same category, how about you? >> you know, kevin, thank you so much for having me on i think you are right. there is a disconnect here between any kind of aspirations of tolerance and community and what was going on. we haven't seen this kind of anti-catholic bigotry since the late 1800s. and it's really disappointing that after so much
9:05 pm
we've learned about how to treat each other well, to not discriminate, to enjoy religious plural pluralism we are back to square one where we are finding women religious being mocked and celebrated and honored instead of really focusing on a toller ration and celebration of religious belief. >> i heard a comment on sports talk radio today, someone made the point that if this were a group mocking jewish americans or muslim americans, would the dodgers have done the same thing? i think that is certainly a question that could be debated. this is from catholics -- for catholics share part of a statement, catholics around the world and especially those local to la should be outraged, a group that openly be whos and blas peoples the sacred traditions of the catholic church, catholic or christian and take your faith seriously you cannot let such an offense
9:06 pm
occur against the sacred heart of jesus, your thoughts on that. >> kevin, today is the celebration of the solemn knit of the sacred heart of jesus, and the catholic bishops called all catholics to pay for reparations to pray for blasphemy and litany heart of jesus, we call upon jesus' mercy, that is an important reminder for people of goodwill to realize when we are facing insult or injury or whether our faith is being maligned, that we should respond to this with an abundance of love, not with a hardened heart, but with a heart like jesus'. >> very clearly there was quite a response today, thank you andrea for your time. this is a story that will not go away anytime soon. have a great weekend, we appreciate it. >> thanks, kevin. >> in a matter of hours in philadelphia president biden is set to hit the campaign trail for the first time since

announcing his reelection bid seven weeks ago. this as many democrats are renewing concerns about the president's viability as a 2024 candidate. we welcome national correspondent griff jenkins, i know it's rather late for you, rather early. >> it's friday night, great to be here. good evening, kevin. talk about taking your time, president biden waited more than 50 days to campaign for the first time since reannouncing reelection bid coming on the heels of today's speech where he told a gun control crowd he is far from finished in enacting gun legislation, banning assault weapons again, and it comes after he just won dual labor ebb dorsements from the american federation of teachers in the afl/cio. >> working people got joe biden elected in 2020, he spent delivering for workers in our union. >> but kevin, the polls tell a

comment that has left many scratching their heads,. >> it's the least consequential part of this whole meeting for you. i promise. all right. god save the queen, man. >> so, no one seems to really know what that was about. the white house tried to clean it up offering note to the pool saying he was commenting to the crowd but doesn't really give us full context here. maybe he will talk about it at that rally in philadelphia tomorrow. >> clean up on asile five. >> congressman adam schiff under pressure as a freshman republican congresswoman pushes to discipline the california democrat over his previous assistance that he had evidence that former president trump colluded with russia to win the election. chad from cap call hill. >> cen sewering and condemning adam schiff. >> if at first you don't succeed

durham never existed. it starts to say, they may have the goods, what do you think? >> this is a man who has leaked information for a very long time, i mean one of the things that bothers me the most, the democrat party is going after the president, the current president's biggest political opponent. they do not care, they want to put him in jail for 100 years. the who has been a liar, spread misinformation. who has politicized his own office and this is an opportunity, and i don't really think that as a general censure is enough, they need to look at what they can do for the long term to make sure this man never sits on an intelligence committee again. >> you make a good point because if you even think back to eric swalwell. >> that's right. >> ashley's point is a valid one which is to say, spencer, the republicans didn't go after swalwell, they didn't have any success with schiff, and someone
9:14 pm
argued this is nowhere nearly enough. then you also add to this mayorkas, others, even joe biden himself, they feel like they they've had a ground to move forward, for some reason the gop seems hesitant, am i misreading that. >> that's a problem i think republicans had for a long time, especially within their base because if you look at as we were talking about democrats throw the kitchen sink at everyone, every time whether they have basis for it or not. republicans oversight committee, all this information that seems to move someone toward impeachment, towards censorship, anything that would hold them accountable, we never get to that point. >> i noticed that over the years and i've covered four administrations but there seems to be that pat everybody and i think american voters noticed that. we have talked about his viability for 2024. let me share again a sound bite where the president jokes about being --

9:16 pm
really what they are saying is, if you are voting for joe biden for 2024 are you not really voting for kamala harris to send to the job perhaps immediately thereafter. your thoughts as we wrap it up here. >> i think that is an interesting point haley has been making. it seems like he doesn't have gas in the tank to get through his current term let alone serve another four. i think you see democrats getting uneasy with that. his approval is low and polls are low, a vote for him is a vote for harris who has worse ratings. >> ashley your final thoughts as we look ahead. i know that 2024 if you are a democrat is a catch 22, would you love some fresh blood, perhaps they would, incumbent president, it would seem they are a bit painted in the corner, i guess. >> is your life better today than four years ago. >> reaganesque. >> historic inflation, historic

9:27 pm
it's a political badge that you stand with fauci and collins who are dangling the natural origin as if it had nothing to do with the wuhan lab. >> it boggles the mind, it's -- i can't even tell you the frustration when you hear stories like this and you see researchers like yourself, people medical professionals who know what actually happened. from sub stack public, first people sickened by covid-19 were chinese scientists, identifying the first covid-19 case as a wuhan institute scientist overseeing gain of function research has significant ramifications for investigators in search of a motive for a coverup. i mentioned that to you for two reasons i think one they are right about that, matt taibbi and others have been beating this drum as well. i mention it to you as well because it begs the question, what role did the u.s. government play in funding this research and having a hand in
9:28 pm
this research and was that part of the reason perhaps that there was all this incredible pushback? >> well, dr. fauci and collins would talk about this kind of research as if you could guarantee the highest level safety standards and anyone who has worked in a lab, any scientist will tell you, lab mistakes are common, experiments run into the night, you don't follow every exact protocol. when you are dealing with potentially dangerous viruses, you have to account for human errors, they didn't do that. it's 5 miles from the epicenter of the world. what are the odds and how can you not acknowledge that? >> just incredible of the a couple other topics i want to get to somewhere quickly. suicide and homicide rates of young people are at a high, i'm trying to get my arms around this, most troubling is the suicide rate. let me share this with some of the folks in home.

comes in and says not so fast, your take on whether or not if a package says it has no synthetic colors or synthetic preservatives, that's good enough to be called natural. >> yeah, well these are consumer protections. and they are very serious all across the country. especially in california. and what it is, it's pore the policy, it's for the policy to protect consumers. and look, when a manufacturer puts that type of representation on the packaging, they do it for a reason, it's a benefit, it's a unique selling proposition we call it in marketing. if this is true and this still has to be vetted, obviously, this third party that did this testing needs to be an expert to support this allegation in court. if true it goes against what the reputations had been to the consumers and i do believe it could be a problem for the retail giant if in fact they have these products that do not
9:44 pm
meet the representations on the marketing. >> lexi, david makes a strong point. the fact is it could cost them millions of dollars if they are playing slight of hand with their definition of natural, what say you? >> well, the plaintiff here are going to have to show that aldi mislead based on saying that there are no artificial flavors, it's all natural, the issue here is actually a chemical that i had a compound i had never heard of, i am a prolific process food eater, mailc acid which is naturally occurring chemical, it's demalic which is an evil twin because it's man made. by using this man-made chemical they can't say these cereal bars are all natural, aren't artificial, it's actually fact sensitive. i feel badly for whatever jury has to sit on this case, the chemistry of this food
9:45 pm
science is actually really confusing. ultimately in other cases it has happened a lot, a lot of companies have been sued, coca-cola, the suit actually got thrown out because it turned on whether the demalic acid was being used as a flavor enhancer or creating a flavor. it's really a fact-sensitive issue. i thought this was pretty compelling case for the plaintiff. some high profile companies have actually had these cases tossed out. >> well, the things you learn you walk into the deon your job and learn about malic acid. we have about 15 seconds for the -- for both of you. i went to get your take on this other case here, david. sometimes i always wonder if they are saying this is on sale and it's not really on sale. tell the folks at home what we are talking about here. >> yeah, we are in the same
9:46 pm
conversation about a retail -- retailer putting something on sale but also increasing the prices. and then basically saying it's on sale but the profit margin is just about the same. you know, i see it's a questionable problem for sure. it shouldn't be happening. but i don't see it as consumer fraud like i did the first case, so we'll have to see what lexi thinks. >> safeway is going to have their hands full with people saying what is going on with this, your thoughts. >> this is math i can understand. this is buy 2 get 2 which is not what the consumer wanted. they wanted a $4-pint of ice cream with an extra one sent in. so, they have actually gotten in trouble with this before with pork chops, ice cream in california or pork chops in oregon. albertson's has been in trouble for this exact same type of claim. so, i think this is a problem for them.
