harper's magazine. number one is sean hannity. be sure to catch this week's shows. bret baier has a big interview with president jump this week. "cross country" starts now. lawrence: welcome to "cross country." we begin in philadelphia are the president gave the first rally cry of his 2024 election. >> we have got a fight on our hands. my question to you is simple. are you with me in this fight? lawrence: the president should have had a fight on his hands, but he's fighting his own track record.
11:01 pm
from inflation to the border to crime and national security. but what happens when you press the president on any difficult issue? >> what a stupid son of a [bleep]. shush up. okay? why should i answer that question. wait, wait, wait, you are getting nervous, man, calm down. lawrence: here on cross continue are you * there is no such thing as a stupid question. so we gave folks in filly the chance to ask joe biden one of their own. >> i would say why don't you sit down and have an interview and explain all the things you have done since you have taken office. >> how is he going to lower inflation. >> when is there going to be caps on renting. >> i guess i would ask about just the general cut climate,
11:02 pm
how high the american debt is right now. >> mr. president, please help the homeless. please. the that's the one question. i ask you. please do something about it. >> student loans really. how come that's not happening. >> what is he going to do for people who already paid off their college debt and spent thousands of dollars paying it off. >> my question is when are you leaving. get out, stop destroying our country. >> what would you ask the president of the united states? >> can i have ice cream with you? lawrence: joining me, new york come up tonight and senator car carlucci. no president wants to answer questions when the approval rating is down and multiple issues are going down.
11:03 pm
he will have to get out there and talk with the american people. >> he's going to have to do that. there is no question about it. to see that response that president biden gave those reporters, it's not presidential. i'm disappointed the president did that. he has a reputation of not doing that. he usually has candor and he's open and treats the press with the dignity they deserve. you juxtapose that with our previous president who had a hostile relationship with the media. so to see that, i think it's a lip-up, it questions the best of us at times when you are on edge. but the president has to do better. he has to show himself to be
11:04 pm
presidential. lawrence: not liking the tough questions. none of the politicians do. but he was supposed to be different. >> he just ended a speech by saying god save the queen, man. the older he gets, it seems obvious his age is creeping up on him. he's just not as much with it. it's not an easy thing to acknowledge his age is clearly catching up with him. bernie sanders is his age and he's with it. that's why genera gen-z * pollss dropped. lawrence: this is a fox news poll. 8'poll.
11:05 pm
it's 88% of people say they are worried about the future. 90% were concerned about prices and inflation. higher crime rates, 81%. i was shocked about saying the future of america, that means the debt, what the country stood for. people are concerned about this. the preservation of the country. >> what's interesting with some of those surveys, it showed republicans and democrats are similar in terms of values. but they believe the other party is different from them. i think that's something we have to fight to overcome to say where can we come together instead of where do we differ? the politics today is not like we are campaigning, it's complaining. lawrence: where is the separation? the polling does suggest the republicans and democrats are relying on this issue. when you look at elected
11:06 pm
democrats. let's take crime as an example. it seems like the d.a.s have been lax on crime. so why the continues in the way they execute the policies? >> i think it's depending -- there are thousands of das across the country. lawrence: our major cities. >> it's about enforcement equal across the line, and that's what they are looking for. ultimately what will solve the problems is we get away from the personal attacks. let's attack the policy, not the pen. that-help us bridge to the next centurith terms of the issues that need addressed. let's go after the policy and thought the pen. i'm hopeful the '24 campaign as it heats up that the media will
11:07 pm
stay with that. lawrence: ricky, there is any candidate focusing on the policies for the american people. >> being moderate and speak to the middle. because our primary systems are closed. and independent have no say. then, you know, a republican never stand a chance here. that's part of our system thanks against that moderation that i think we both value and we both want. but date's more profitable and expedient to talk about our differences than our common humanity. >> thanks so much for joining me. a good civil conversation about the future of the country. the violence on the subway in
11:08 pm
new york shows no signs of slowing down. a good samaritan was slashed in the face after trying to break up a fight. reporter: that good samaritan was heading home which he saw a young man arguing with a younger man on the train. when the older man fell down, he approached the suspect. then gideon walked back toward the train doors. when the doors opened, he felt a tap on the shoulder and when he turned our the suspect slashed him and he had to get 100 stitches. it turns out the suspect had been released without bail on
11:09 pm
strangulation. he was grants a $7,800 bail in this case. lawrence: this story is coming out after another violent encounter on a brooklyn train. >> the ex-con was threatening to erase someone before punching a woman on the subway. williams is charged with manslaughter but his attorney says it was self defense and what he sees is a dangerous reality for subway riders. >> based on what people have been expressing to me the last two years, they have been asking can i carry a small knife or pepper spray. i have to say part of that is illegal. they say can i use it against someone who is assaulting me? i say you can from a safety standpoint but you will get
11:10 pm
arrested because that's what we are dealing with right now. reporter: the case is being compared to the case against daniel penny. the marine indicted in last month's chokehold death of jordan neely. lawrence: you can't even defend your wife and girlfriend without being punished. the exodus from san francisco continue because of things like this. a local reporter sharing this video of thieves steeling tens of thousands in merchandise from a downtown store. the california senate passed a law discouraging employees from punishing shoplifters. so even a good morning america reporter is acknowledging how bad it is. >> it is worth mentioning that we are at union square or the westfield mall this morning
11:11 pm
because we have been advised it's simply too dangerous to be there at this hour. lawrence: joining me to discuss is san francisco police officer and friend joe alworth. i appreciate these johnny come lately reporters talking about the crisis. but we have been talking about this for years. i guess this is the rock bottom point, joe? >> you and i discussed the terrible propositions like prop 47 that lid to incentivizing criminals to do these crimes. then you have radical d.a.s who allowed criminals to rub rampant and run wild. many of the politicians in san francisco limiting the police from doing their jobsf with restrictive policies. you have an apathetic police
11:12 pm
force and you are left with this. lawrence: i was just watching the interview governor newsom did with sean hannity. it's clear even the governor doesn't feel like there is a problem. he feels it's blown out of proportion by what he calls the right wing media and conservatives. he feels california is safer than republican states. as someone who policed the streets on a day-to-day basis, do you agree with the governor? >> the governor doesn't even touch the streets unless he's dining at the french lawn dri dry. lawn -- laundry. i counted 24 stores, not including whole foods. sfpd was working overtime at many of these stores just trying
11:13 pm
to get a grip on the crime to prevent the thefts and when can't control it even with the cops staying there 24/7. if crime were not an issue you wouldn't be paying cops overtime to control it. even with them spending overtime we can't controlling it. it's like mayor breed said, she is blaming on the fact people are going back home to work. lawrence: i was in san francisco three weeks ago. i just gat back from -- i just got back from l.a. how do we turn it around? is it strictly policing? is the homeless individuals on the street doing this? how do we attack this problem? >> i am always the guy who
11:14 pm
thinks the glass is half full. i believe over time they will be able to turn it around. but it will take time. this problem didn'tee occur overnight. it's a multi-faceted problem. you have got the homelessness and drugs incentivized by crimes being lax. it will just take time. i think we need to incentivize business owners and for people to come and spend money in san francisco. police officers need to be empowered. we are not going to arrest our way out of this problem. and it will take time. lawrence: what's the use of arresting these people if the d.a. is going to allow them to be back on the streets. coming up, an anti-christian drag show honored by the lax
11:19 pm
the honoring of the sisters of perpetual indulgence. the sisters were there to receive the communities hero award as part of the dodgers pride night. they were originally invited by the dodgers, then uninvited, then reinvited after they faced backlash on the move. joining me is tomi lahren. you and i were talking about this. i don't get it. you have the nba, the nfl. they suffered. people didn't want to watch. not because they didn't want to support people having different personal views, they just didn't want to see it. major league baseball stayed out of it.
11:20 pm
tomi activistism is the new currency now. do i think it will change the hearts and minds of these executives? i don't. i don't think they are beholding to their consumers or fans. they are beholding to a corporate inclusion index. lawrence: this is not the coaches or players. i know this specifically because i have been in the baseball world. my husband played baseball and he's a currents coach. you see a lot of players when they do well pointing up at the sky. they are pointing at jesus christ, they are pointing at god. why don't the players say we are not going to participate in this.
11:21 pm
i always wondered, during 2020. you could boycott and neil for george floyd and social justice, but you can't take a stand for your religion? you have the numbers, send a message. they can't play the game without you guys. lawrence: do you think the players wants to take a stand? people that don't know, the major leagues, they get paid the most. they have the capitol if they want to band together to make their voices heard. >> here is part of the problem. they want to stand up and send a message. but when you have sports writers that are predominantly liberal writing about you. they are not going to write, we stood up for christianity. they will say so and so is a bigot and intell aren't and
11:22 pm
anti-ing wianti-lgbtq. if 80% of major legal baseball conservatives. they can't play without 80% of y'all. realized your power. lawrence: i want to play this sound from joe rogan. >> did you lose friendships? >> yes. but not much. no one i really liked. >> did you just discovered you didn't like them? >> no. i knew there were a lot of cowards. i had casual relationships with cowards. some of them attacked me. good. i don't talk to them any more. i have a lot of friends. lawrence: i always said i would
11:23 pm
never lose any of my friends over politics. but that's no longer the playing field anymore. politics is now a religion. >> it's a litmus test how voted for you. in this case joe rogan. during that time that was the hot discussion. even last year that was the discussion. if you weren't pro vaccine. nobody wanted to talk to you. joe rogan is a perfect example. they tried to cancel him time and time again. he said you can't cancel me, i refuse to be canceled. liberals walk into every room and thinner afraid to share their beliefs. but conservatives we always have to weigh the consequences. it's not about perfectly trying offends someone. but if you have convictions, stand object them. but otherwise, do you really

lawrence: welcome back. if you are a parent, teacher or both, you may have noticed how common it is for students to be on their cell phone in the classroom. this is an issue schools have been dealing with for years. but the richardson school district began lock up students' phones in individual pouches for the day so they can't access them in the classroom. others are calling it a step too far. jimmy failla joins me now. are you familiar with this.
11:29 pm
in comedy, dave chappelle started this. then you open it up on your way out. do you support what they are doing in the schools. >> i'm a parent. this issue doesn't affect me because we have h-mobile and we can't get service anywhere. but i do 100% support it when we were in school it was hard for a teacher to keep your attention when you had two options. stare out the window or pass a know it to a girl you had no shot with. it shouldn't be in the classroom and you know this. we are at an all hands on deck points right now. we are getting crushed by china.
11:30 pm
lawrence: no one likes jimmy being a narc. you are saying take away the phones. i can have that position, but you can't have that position. >> i'm trying to help you by taking away the phone. you don't want to be 45 on national tv wearing this shirt. lawrence: he has a story where he turns out great. and you are telling the kids, don't be like me. it's unbelievable. i want to get your reaction to this. this is crazy. these are the cyclists. i can't stands them. this is what they are labeling as racists. he tolerates racist and transphobic comments on social medial emboldens people about
11:31 pm
the cyclists suddenly encourages those who would harm them. i can't stand the cycleists who don't follow the rules. but is everything a hate crime now? while driving on the bike? i need to understand. >> if there is any racist people who likes getting cuts off by a cyclist. >> i think it's the one issue that unifies us all. >> this is proof people have lost all concept of what real racism is. if you fought for real civil rights, you are not going to be on a march for the cyclist. dr. king wasn't on the bike. >> i'm half convinced that you covered this story because you
11:32 pm
want me to cycle more. lawrence: i would not dare suggest you exercise. >> the idea that they base anything on society on comments on social media -- social media is not a barometer for anything. twitter is a nightclub where people don't want to get hit. lawrence: so i don't get hit by your producers. >> i am hosting, hosting fox news saturday night. if it's going down tonight, he had 13 kids. tudor dickson is on the show. and my son is on the show because it's father's day. lawrence: i have got the fox app

include parents in decisions in over what constitutes books in schools. >> we put our kids in school. you teach them more effectively than we can and don't expose them to pornographic and indecent stuff. that was just a given. we didn't need laws from that. and then we woke up from covid and there are thousands of things all over the schools. lawrence: the state representative is making sure it's not being used to ban religious text. this campaign is being used to target schools and weaken our principles. >> the same school district that says the bible is not appropriate for children.
11:39 pm
just broad in a book with a woman with a gun in her hand having sex and shooting up a classroom with ar-15s. this same school district bought that for junior high school students. lawrence: typically when things go wrong in a society when turn to faith. why are we turning against faith and why are our institutions making it easy to turn away from faith. >> that's a great question, lawrence. it's not bad enough yet, i don't think we have felt the full consequences of the economic immorality, the constitutional immorality, the spiritual immorality. we haven't fallen to that place where the consequences have become apparent. when we do, then people are
11:40 pm
going to turn and look for that higher power that did allow western civilization to be what it is. it really concerns me that it's even a close call. >> a lot of republicans in there as well. i don't understand why this is not a firm red line in the state of utah. >> i don't either. i asked for it to be on the special session. saying this isn't even a close call. let's shut this down right now. and i couldn't -- we couldn't get that to rise to the level. rawrns * as these groups continue their efforts to remove core values from our schools, other groups are working to keep sexually explicit material in the classroom and even hide it.
11:41 pm
when you say kids should not be consuming that type of information. what do the schools say? >> well, a lot of them say it's not there, we don't have obscene or pornographic material. and they playing semantics game. it's sexually explicit. so we have to make sure to use those words so they don't get around the semantic games. when you show it to them and you use the right terms they are like well this usually depicts marginalized communities. i think that's such an insult. marginalized communities have beautiful literature. it's not the sexually explicit content that defines them. and some say so is insulting. >> now they want to get rid of
11:42 pm
the bible out of the school. >> yes. >> why? >> it's just a game. it's part of the politics. i equate it to solomon when a woman said it's my baby, no, it's my baby, let's cut it in half. if they remove the bible it sets precedence that so many other historical documents will be removed. lawrence: you don't wants the bad of history to be is the critique. what would you say to those folks. >> the law is specific, the law says sexually explicit content and it details what that is. it says nothing about. lawrence: raymond arroyo, i
11:43 pm
couldn't believe this. >> you were talking to the right people. the problem is the utah legislature did not properly define terms. though they are trying to target and remove sexually explicit material from the shelves for young eyes. they entrusted each district, each school district to sell --o set their own policy on how it's police. that opens it up to all kinds of mischief. they are not specific enough with the language they are using. they are saying they want the group to the review pornographic or indecent contents. it should be pornographic or sexual images. if that's what you are targeting, say that in the law. what you are seeing there, that lady you walked with was correct.
11:44 pm
you have activists who are upset. so they say school district this bible has racy content in it. and the school agreed. but the joy of cooking could be included because it says massage the bird. but we have a sexualized pornographic material available to young kids. nobody wants book bans. but i think you restrict certain books to age level and appropriate eyes and level of understanding. that's totally appropriate. when you are dealing with reading levels where they are in this country. we have the lowest reading levels on record post covid. one in three kids are at standard as to reading level. lawrence: they are not reading
11:45 pm
the sexually explicit contents. they are just look at the images. they are like coloring books for adults. >> kids should read anything that interests them. but you have to guide them and curate that as well. but you want them reading. not just look at images. it's not a replacement for the cell phone. this is your moment as a parent to lead your child down this lifelong journey and adventure. it's a pity schools aren't doing it, despite the billions we gave to the teachers union to retain teachers. the kids are not learning as they should. >> one of the things i found fascinating. one of the activists in utah told the parents they need to put this under diversity. if they put it under diversity then they can get away with it.
11:46 pm
this shows you how they have hijacked diversity and all these other words. >> again, who is making this determination. when you have local boards being appointed locally, i think it creates all kinds of mischief. create a law that works for everybody. but it has to be very clear. what are you after. otherwise they will outlaw everything. now the book of mormon is under review, too. lawrence: i asked them about that as well. they are not too happy about it. up next. colin mcgregor finds himself in a second scandal this week. we'll have the breaking news update next.

it shows them at a table holding drinks 30 minutes after she claims she was violently assaulted. saying this is a video that supports what my client has been saying and supports what she told the police since the inception of this incident. mcgreggor denied the claim. joining me now, lauren con lynn. you are always plugged in. what are you hearing? >> i want to point out, sandwiched in between these two scandals, conor mcgregor said he's having a fourth child with his fiance. sexual assault is very serious. i wasn't there. all i can say is if there were
11:52 pm
me and that happened to me in the bathroom, i wouldn't go out and party with him afterward. but if that was me, i'm not saying it didn't happen. there was interaction between connor and this woman. but he's no inqui d is no choir. he was also accused of sexual assault in ireland in 2019 as well. lawrence: if you are engaged or married. you have a girlfriend. you don't go in the restroom. i know they are not washing their hand together in the washroom. >> it doesn't look great for him. if you read the reports, she
11:53 pm
said the only reason i got away is because he couldn't make it happen. and you know what i'm saying. so he doesn't look great either way. lawrence: i guess the big question is where does this go from here. will this be a career destroyer for conor? >> i think we'll wait and see how it plays out. these ufc guys appear to be really angry. i just watched the video before this of the ufc president dana white punching his wife in the face on new year's eve. but i think that we have to wait and see what happens. i don't see this being super damaging to him because of the last few things that happened negatively haven't really hurt
11:54 pm
his career too much. but we'll wait and see. lawrence: wheel of fortune, who is going to be the replacement? i put it on my instagram. the first person i got from folks saying they want to see as a replacement was ryan seacrest. do you see that happening? >> i don't see that happening. anyone but whoopi goldberg. please, god, no. i think mario lopez should do it. i love him. i think he's so charismatic and so funny. he would check all the boxes and be amazing. lawrence: some people said joe biden. >> are you serious? lawrence: yes. some people said joe biden. >> no, i said to alejandro one
