more on this latest development, charles. >> good afternoon, eric. in important situation. the pennsylvania state police said the department is in the morning after to his troopers were shoppers when was killed in a shootout with an armed suspect saturday afternoon. this entire ordeal played out across to separate scenes in pennsylvania thus in the central portion of the state. the state police tell us an armed man first engaged around 12:45 p.m. saturday afternoon during the initial encounter was reportedly near a state police eric for the armed man ... shot one trooper. that trooper was later rushed to a hospital with serious injuries. after a manhunt for the suspect they located him about two hours in a walker township about 7 miles away in the same county troopers asked jada gunfire they are. through that particular saints pennsylvania state police say both the suspect and a troopers were shot and killed.

pennsylvania governor josh shapiro put out a series of tweets saying quote pennsylvania state police trooper was killed in the line of duty. another trooper was shot is now stable but in critical condition. each one put themselves on the line to protect their fellow troopers entered protect their fellow pennsylvanians. the tweets go on to say just left the hospital where the injured trooper is being treated. pennsylvania state police commissioner and i think there colleagues for their service and pray for his recovery. laurie and i send our love to the family of the trooper killed today. may his memory be a blessing but so far, eric, pennsylvania state police have not released the identities of the suspect who was killed in that shootout. as well as the troopers who were also involved. just a sad situation certainly for the trooper who lost his life and the ultimate sacrifice. before our thoughts and prayers here at fox news are with this troopers families, thank you

charles. arthel: the latest numbers on the economy show inflation is cooling my practice on many everyday essentials are still high. people continue to feel in their wallets foxbusiness correspondent lydia hu has more. >> the white house claims inflation is falling. but what is actually happening inflation still increasing but at a slower pace. that does not mean prices are falling. especially since inflation is accumulative. consider how inflation is compounded year-over-year project for example serial prices are up 9.3% over a year ago. but a year ago prices for serial port up 12.8% compared to 12 months before that. that means serial prices remain more than 23% higher over two years ago. there are similar in math for staples like butter and margarine up nine-point to

political science professor laruen wright joins us. lauren, good to see you. it's the increase in support for mr. trump after this indictment. do you think that's a temporary bulb? will we see a decline in the polls or hit is his support pretty solid among the gop? >> take it obsolete when what these numbers are some cracks in the numbers we do not yet have enough consistent polling to show how this indictment will ultimately affect his candidacy. largely because other candidates might come out and attack him. the actual trial may take place in the context of the campaign if it gets going quickly. we also saw polling, post indictment from abc says about 40% of republicans think the charges are serious about 15% of republicans think trump should be charged with a crime. you're absolutely right. we think about this in the

national context is very damaging among democrats and independents. among republicans i do not think there's evidence it helps him. but certainly you are right he's not losing support quite yet. eric: what if there is a cascading effect of more indictments more indictments, trousers got potentially in august potential indictments for the voter fraud accusations. you have got the trial again another lawsuit they've got generate six the potentially from jack smith. will there be a chipping away in the gop as the other candidates may start getting up on him? >> i cannot see how it helps them to be indicted on these very serious charges for that seems like such a simple take. it is not the mode i'll take these days allowed divorcing this helps them. we also have to realize there's

a lot going on in the immediate environment. these charges and indictments keep his name in the mix. other candidates have to respond to it. a lot of the support trump's has at the head of the party in the last republican president is already baked in. i don't think these very controversial very divisive news events can help him grow his base of support and get those moderates on board and those of voters who might not be that comfortable and are voting for these other one and 2% candidates and polls right now but he needs to grow the num numbers. right now is just keeping the numbers. >> you are saying he has a ceiling or floor depending on how you look at it? >> is a great way to describe it. the more candidates that jump in, that helps trump more. that helps him a lot more than the indictments and the new cycle does. i probably helps in more than

small dollar donors which she is very good at courting because frankly these people are faceless, nameless to the average voter in many cases do not have a hope of winning. that just makes trump even more error apparent too. steve art look at the mirrors: over numbing number of democrats and independents. they want him to drop out for 87% of democrats of course want him to drop out. look at the independent. 58%. can you in a general at that type of polling? it's very difficult. trump will be in a more divisive, tougher position than he was when he lost in 2022 joe biden. it's very hard to lose as an incumbent president to be ho honest. a lot of that is how trump dealt with the pandemic. a lot of it was ck off chaos of his administration.

i do not think you could win a national election with those numbers. we have to remember there's about 10% of republican voters that rolled the dice and with trump in 2060 but voted for joe biden in 2020. those people probably more so than diehard supporters are going to stick with him no matter what. eric: what percentage you think are this diehard supporters? >> been as high as 50 and as low as 30. facts are really wide range. it is always in their only look at polling progress we have the diehard supporters that see this in his view a witchhunt of independence and no it's not. let's take a look at two other polls from the mirrors pole. you've got 50% of those who are asked. think they believe he did something illegal.

once a very important fact to note is although this particular cyber attack was attributed and was acknowledged by the russian cyber criminal organization it is my professional intelligent assessment the russian state is behind it. the russian state is superior at the cyber warfare doctrine which they developed specifically to target the united states and europe. the pipe they hate path a variety pack of systems what is the damage? >> the damage is quite exte extensive. but it is not catastrophic. what do we mean by that? this particular attack was exploiting a filetransfer software called move it. it is a ransom type of attack.

it did not take out u.s. power grid. did not take out the department of energy which is at by the way an agency that manages our nuclear infrastructure and sets nuclear policy. but it could have been a lot worse. the russians certainly have the capability to inflict catastrophic damage on ticked on the critical infrastructure which includes financial services, electrical power grid et cetera. but at this point they are not doing it. those types of capabilities and operations are reserved for wartime but in this particular situation this is putin strategic messaging as russia and ukraine, but is escalating he is seeking to compel the u.s. to stop arming ukraine and provide assistance. >> is this the beginning of a wave of cyber attacks to come?

also what tools do we have to defend against future attacks what offense of tactics can we take? >> it depends. putin she had such achieves his objective. as i said he is likely ultimately the one who authorized this because the russian cyber doctrine requires the presidential approval for a tax on high value targets for u.s. agencies federal agencies. if pollutant have his objectives and we do stand down we will withdraw support from ukraine. he may or ratchet down the attacks. probably will ratchet down the intensive attacks. there is a certain baseline of cyber espionage that continuously goes on. in terms of her cybersecurity we are trying to beef up cybersecurity and are federal
