♪ ♪ mike: one person is dead, at least 20 injured in a suburban illinois shooting early this morning as a large group was gathered for a juneteenth celebration that turned violent. an estimated 2-300 people were in a parking lot outside a shopping center when the shooting began. welcome to "fox news live," i'm mike emmanuel. police have yet to name any suspects. claudia cowan is live with the latest on this developing story. hello, claudia. >> reporter: shattered glass

and crime scene tape now mark the area where this shooting happened right around 12:30 this morning in the parking lot of a small strip mall in willowbrook, a town of about 9,000 people some 20 the miles south of chicago. one witness says she and her friends were just about to leave the june teeth celebration when they -- juneteenth celebration when they heard shots and everyone ducked for cover. several hundred people were there, you can just imagine how terrifying this must have been. sheriff's deputies in the area heard the gunshot is the and raced to that mall where the mass if shooting then triggered a huge emergency response. authorities spoke to reporters this morning and shared what they knew about the victims. >> preliminary witness and victim reports indicate there were at least 20 the individuals shot, at this time 1 victim is deceased. >> reporter:st the unclear if that person died at the scene or later at the hospital. at least 10 people were transported to local emergency rooms. at last report, five were still

in the hospital with two people listed in critical condition. several other victims, we understand, were able to drive themselves to get medical attention. it's unclear what led up to the violence or how many shooters police are looking for. investigators have not released any details about what they are learning there from witnesses or what evidence they've found, nor have police disclosed the age or genders of any of the victims. we do know investigators have set up a command center outside a liquor store at waffle house there at that parking lot which is now the focus of a massive investigation. police also looking for the public's help and any cell phone video people might have as the search continues for the person or people responsible of mike? mike: claudia cowan starting us off live. many thanks. a pennsylvania state trooper killed and another trooper seriousesly wounded after a shootout in central pennsylvania. the suspect was also killed in the shootout. charles watson is tracking the

latest. hello, charles. >> reporter: good afternoon, mike. pennsylvania state police say the department is in mourning after two of its troopers were shot, one of whom was killed in a shootout with an armed suspect saturday afternoon. this whole ordeal plaid out across two separate scenes this pennsylvania in the central portion of the state. pennsylvania police tell us an armed man first engaged troopers in mifflintown, pennsylvania, around 12:45 saturday afternoon. during that initial encounter which was reportedly near a state police bare rack, the armed man allegedly shot one trooper who was rushed to a hospital to be treated for serious injuries. after a manhunt, mike, for the suspect, police located him about two hours later in walker township about 7 miles away in the same county. troopers exchanged gunfire with the suspect there, and during that particular exchange pennsylvania police say both the suspect and a trooper were shot and killed. we just got video in a few

moments ago from someone who says they were nearby during troopers' second encounter with the suspect. take a listen as you hear what appears to be dozens of gunshots. [gunfire] >> reporter: yeah, you can hear all those gunshots in that video there. pennsylvania governor josh shapiro put out a series of tweets overnight saying, quote, pennsylvania state police trooper was killed in the line of duty, another trooper was shot and is now stable but in critical condition, each one put themselves on the line to protect their fellow troopers and to protect their fellow pennsylvanians. the betweens go on to say -- the tweets go on to say i just left the hospital, pennsylvania state police commissioner christopher pare race and i thanked his colleagues for their service and prayed for his recovery. lori and i send our love to the family of the trooper killed today, may his memory be a

blessing. so far the pennsylvania state police have not released the identity of the troopers who were involved in that shooting, nor have they released the identity of the suspect who was killed in that exchange of gunfire with those troopers. but what a sad situation for the trooper who passed away, mike, putting his life on the line to keep others safe. mike mike heartbreaking day for those law enforcement families. charles watson reporting live, thanks very much. ♪ mike: the biden administration's relations with china under the microscope this weekend with secretary of state antony blinken meeting with senior officials in beijing. the trip comes amid growing tensions between the u.s. and china as recent military confrontations heightened the strain. lucas tomlinson is live at the white house with with the latest. hello, lucas. >> reporter: the first green beret this in congress spoke earlier on "sunday morning futures" about what you will not hear secretary blinken say on his visit to beijing. >> we have the arm taiwan to the

teeth, we've got to get our supply chains out, we have to have a reagan military-style buildup, and we have to support our allies like japan, india and australia. i mean, that's what we've got to do. that should be the administration's strategy. >> reporter: it's the first visit by a u.s. secretary of state to china in five years. foreign policy experts say expectations are low on this trip. this is more of a door opener, if you will, to reassume high-level, face to face meetings. blinken is meeting with chinese officials in the same building that that hosted richard nixon more than 50 years ago, mike. china's come a long way, they now have the second largest economy in the world and has greatly expanded its nuclear arse that would. the pentagon says china will double its nuclear stockpile over the next decade, one reason why some republicans want to see arms control agreements that include china. >> all throughout the cold war we tried to have diplomacy with russia, we should continue to

have diplomacy with china. i think we should ongoing arms control talks even despite all of the things and all of the complaints, look, i've had a lot of complaints about the leak from the lab, but there's a lot of discussions and ongoing diplomacy that that needs to occur. so i actually wish blinken well, and i'm glad he's making the trip. >> reporter: some would like to see the u.s. expand its aging nuclear arsenal to be able to deter china the same way we deterred russia during the cold war, mike. mike: so, lucas, low expectations for this trip after secretary of defense lloyd austin was snubbed by with his chinese counterpart, right? >> reporter: that's right. secretary of defense lloyd austin was snubbed many singapore during that visit, but right now it seems that both sides are willing to be able to dip their toe in the water, willing to resume some kind of relationship and be able to talk at high levels. it's certainly important as you've seen these provocative military installations, the

chinese warship cutting off a u.s. guided missile destroyer in the taiwan strait. international air a space, international water, mike, certainly not far from china. with the chinese spying on the u.s., there's no question the u.s. is spying on can china as well. mike: lucas tomlinson, thanks a lot. for more on secretary blink in's trip, joining me now is michael pillsbury. michael, welcome. >> thank you. mike: so there are a wide range of areas for the united states to be concerned about chinese behavior. let's start with the spy base in cuba. concerns about chinese cranes at u.s. ports, the spy balloon incident, chinese-made cell towers and china buying up land near sensitive the sites. how should a u.s. secretary of state handle these matters with chinese leaders? >> well, he's got two days of talks, and he's already in the

last few hours released his hope that the chinese foreign minister will come to washington d.c. the chinese foreign minister said yes to this. so this is what the biden administration plan seems to be, to give the appearance of progress by the actual holding of meetings whether it's in beijing or in washington. i don't think this is very, a very good approach. frankly, some people are rather easily fooled that just because the two sides are talking, that means nothing will happen. a lot of historians that warned about munich and the idea that hitler would -- and he signed the communique, he wouldn't do anything. it just doesn't work that way. what's actually happening, i think, is on the chinese side, and i've written a book about this called "the hundred-year marathon," the chinese are getting worried that the house republicans and the china sort of bashing members of the senate are actually going to pass some legislation to the hurt china. this hasn't happened yet, it's

just being drafted. they want to head this off. they want to reduce the sense of threat they've been creating. now, whether they'll do anything concrete about it is another story. fentanyl is one issue. will they issue a communique saying we've stopped the precursors, will they close down the cuban spy station, will they stop the harassment of our ships in the taiwan strait and the south china sea. these are very specific issueses. we put together a hundred of them in a report called winning the new cold war at heritage foundation. we're just going to check to see if this communique on monday to or tuesday, does it solve any of these hundred problems or is it just going to be diplomacy for its own sake and trying to reduce the sense of threat among those house ore palins so hay don't really draft any legislation to hurt china. that's what's at stake, i think. mike: there's a divide today among some republicans about whether or not antony blinken should be there. in your view, should he be there? >> no, he should not be there

unless he's got a secret deal that was arranged in advance. we've got our largest e embassy, mike, is in beijing, 2300 people. our ambassador has contacts there. there could be a secret deal that's going to be announced in a day or two that shows the trip was a good idea. i myself doubt that very much. i want to wait and read the language of the communique. there may not even be a communique. it may just be this invitation to china's foreign minister chin who, by the way, was the ambassador here the last couple years. fluent in english, understands american politics. are hay going to finesse the blinken trip and nothing will come of it, that will mean there's a mistake. is there going to be a rabbit pulled out of a hat? if so, this is a great trip, right? so we have to wait and see monday and tuesday. mike: what should congress do the about china at this point. >>? >> oh, the key here is action. there needs to be legislation drafted by what they call the three mikes, mike rodgers with, mike turner, mike mccaul from

their committees to do various things like restricting chinese receipt of high-tech investment, punishment for the fentanyl precursor issueses, a long list of ideas we have in our heritage foundation report. but there's no actual draft legislation yet where you can say, congressman, what is your view on this bill. we're not there yet. that's what china's trying to head off, is our congress taking really specific actions and getting things passed. we're nowhere near that yet, i don't think, so the chinese ploy may succeed, mike. they may be able to tamp down the china threat in washington, d.c. by just showing a bit of friendship towards secretary blinken. mike: so the administration set expectations low, what do you make of that? >> very smart. that argues against the rabbit out of a hat theory that i just put forward that kissinger and others were famous for, a secret deal announced in a summit meeting. when they lowered expectations

mike: 2024 presidential hopefuls are courting voters in key states with president biden holding his first re-election rally in pennsylvania yesterday. meanwhile, governor ron desantis made an appearance in nevada as the looming trump indictment remains major topic of discussion. alexandria hoff has the latest 2024 campaign updates. >> reporter: hi, mike. president biden and governor desantis are actually both

taking their campaigns and fund raising efforts to california tomorrow. in fact, the president has 20 fundraisers lined up for the second half of june according to reuters. yesterday president biden held his debut re-election rally in philadelphia where he embraced labor union endorsements. >> who do you think's going to get stamping these products made in america? you are, you are. [cheers and applause] if -- but the republicans don't like this anymore. most of them oppose everything i've done. and most want to get rid of it all. is so we've not a fight on our hands. >> reporter: speaking to nevada if republicans yesterday, ron desantis spoke of dismantling woke policies and what he called a culture of losing. >> and you're not going to get a mulligan on the 2024 election, and you're not going to be able to make any excuses about the 2024 election. the time for excuses is over. you either get it done or you don't.

but i think you're right, that was clearly a targeting of trump. and targeting the weakest point for trump which is that he's lost in the last presidential election, the republicans did not do well in the midterms with trump as their standard bearer, and trump has been indicted in two different courts and could be indicted in two more. and until are republicans like desantis start to attack him and tell the truth to the voters about president trump, they're not going to gain ground because right now desantis is 30 points behind. mike: we see the untucked look out on the trail. how's he doing in the early states? >> i think he's doing great. right now it's mostly a two-man race between desantis and trump, and to david's point, yesterday he didn't directly take him on, but he did talk about what i think is going to be the key, deciding point in the 2024 primary which is who can beat joe biden. republicans want to win. quite frankly, republicans need to win based on the last three years of joe biden and his presidency. for the things that we care about, the country that that we

want, we have to the win many 2024, and i think you're going to hear more and more of this out of ron desantis, i am the person who can beat joe biden. mike: we've seen the back and forth between tim scott and former president barack obama, somebody you know. let's play senator scott. >> fighting is good but winning is better. we've lost seven out of the last eight presidential elections as it relates to the popular vote, three in a row. what we have to do as a party and what we need as a nation is someone who stands on american values with the power of persuasion. mike: so just win, baby, from senator scott. your thoughts on what his pitch is. >> i'm really glad senator scott is running. i think he'll be a good candidate. he is not very high in the polls, he doesn't have is a lot of name recognition. he obviously adds diversity to the republican nominees that are competing percent nomination. for the nomination. and he has some good things to say. he's been a good senator from

the south carolina, let's see what he can do. mike: what about senator scott so far? >> i think cost is definitely going to to be a player in this race. his story is just so powerful. his sump speeches are just so powerful -- stump speeches. once this thing gets onto the debate stage, he's going to have a platform form where he's really going to shine, and he brings a different look to the party that, quite frankly, we need, a different energy that i think the whole entire country can get around. at the end of the day, people want someone who can unite this country in 2024. joe biden's not offering that. let's be honest, donald trump's not either. mike: let's take a look at polling from the suffolk poll, on democratic voters' nominee preference, president biden, undecided, 21%. david, is that number alarming for folks at the white house? >> not really. it's very, very early in the campaign. president biden is far away ahead. he is the kind of centrist

nominee. likely he's the president, he has all the power of the incumbency, he has the best name recognition. his job approval ratings have gone up. they're still not great, it's 42%. you'd like them to be higher, but they're higher than what president trump trump's were at this time four years ago, is and i think he's in good shape. mike: 21 is %, does that say they're not that into you? >> joe biden is having the campaign dictated to him right now by rfk jr. he wants to go back to the basement, the campaign that the he wan in 2020 the -- he ran in 2020. when he comes out, we mow there are going to be gaffes, we mow there's going to be some moments where we feel a little uneasy that this man is the commander of the greatest, most powerful nation in the world. so he's out and about fund raising, doing rallies, not where he wants to be. so rfk jr. is having an impact on this race even though most people in the press are totally ignoring him. mike: let's take a look at some

numbers from quinnipiac, very early potentially head to head, biden, 48. trump, 44. david, your thoughts on these early numbers. >> well, biden's ahead a little bit. it's, you know, pretty much like the last presidential election. president trump is suffering a bit given all the things that have happened with him losing a civil case, being indicted in two courts, potentially being indicted in two more courts. i think that's going to to bring his numbers down even more and let's watch and see what happens. he also had a much more hotly-contested nomination process than biden likely will have. mike: do seeing those numbers say to republican voters who just want to win that they should broaden their search? >> absolutely. if you look deeper into the numbers, mike, on the job approval numbers, joe biden's numbers are horrible on the economy, on inflation, on national security, on handling of immigration. he's failing all those things and yet he's still up 4 points on a former president.

♪ mike: ukrainian forces claiming to have destroyed a major ammunition depot in a russian-occupied city along the southern coast of ukraine. this as heavy fighting continues amid ukraine's counteroffensive. senior foreign affairs correspondent greg palkot is tracking the latest live from kyiv. hello, greg. >> reporter: hey, mike. year, we are two week into this counteroffensive, and there is progress but it is slow and grinding, we are toll. another village retaken in the south by ukraine, more small gains at various points along that 600-mile front line and that russian ammo dump pit. described as more probing attacks of massive assaults, this as russians are hitting from the sky in nine different regions in the south and east,

missiles, rockets, airstrikes. they're fighting back on the ground as well there from some very well dug-in positions. meanwhile, myrrh putin's recent comments -- vladimir putin's recent comments confirmed the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons in neighboring bell -- belarus just in case. president biden this weekend called the movie dick louse, and it is father's day here too. president zelenskyy went online posting a lot of warm shots of dads with their kids, thanking in his message every strong and brave ukrainian father and family. a lot of love there. sadly, a lot of loss here too. back to you, mike. mike: greg, you've been to war zones around the globe for more years than you might like to count. 9 i'm curious at this stage in the war what the morale is of the ukrainian people that you come into contact with? how are they holding up? >> reporter: i would say determination is a keyword, yeah. this is our sixth trip here in the last 18 months, and every time there's a little bit

something different, but every time it's the same, this counteroffensive is underway going slower maybe than some had hoped, but what i hear from the officials and from the folks on the ground trusting the officials that it is the human beings that matter, it's the lives that matter. we spent the day at a cemetery here and talked to families who had lost their loved ones, and they trust the leaders here when the moves are made, when the massive assault comes, it'll be careful, and human beings will be uppermost in the mind as well as russia. mike. mike: thanks to my friend and colleague, greg palkot. thanks very much. we are learning more about the brutal attack on a ugandan school that left more than 40 students dead. the attack was reportedly carried out by a group linked to islamic state militants. trey yingst has more. >> reporter: good afternoon.

a rebel group linked to isis killed more than 40 people on friday in uganda. we do note the majority of the victims are students. they were studying at the time of the attack. grew gruesome details about what exactly unfolded. eyewitnesses say five militants set fire to the school's main dormitory and hacked to death most of the victims using machetes. six students were abducted by the men who crossed into the democratic republic of the congo after the attack. the ugandan military says they are pursuing the suspects and believe they are headed towards a national park. in a statement to the united nations, we saw words of sorrow saying those responsible for this appalling act must be brought to justice. funerals were held today for these killed in the tragedy, mourning families gathered to bury their children as local lawmakers called for accountability from the government in the capital. >> the security here told us not to fear, that because the border is secured. i'm surprised that our students

reminder though that there are thousands and thousands of fathers and families that are dealing with separation right now today on father's day but really every day of the year. so the uso, we've been around since 1941, as you said, and our goal is to strengthen our service members and their families, keeping them connected to the their home and country. so we have lots of programs to support those fathers and those families around world. for example, you know, i know early on on the show you were talking about the war ukraine, we have tens of thousands of soldiers sitting in eurozone europe all around the region there away there there their families. we provide them ways to connect back home when they don't have the ability to call or skype, reading programs to help them stay connected as well. here back home in the states our uso centers are hosting barbecues, tea parties, keeping families together because we know that that a strong military requires strong families that support them, and we want to make sure that our fathers know

that the american public is there to support and show their gratitude for their service to our country. mike: chief, you're just back from an eight-and-a-half month deployment aboard the uss george h.w. bush. you missed thanksgiving, christmas, new year's and probably lots of other family occasions. what does it mean for you to be home today? >> well, mike, it's been a long eight and a half months getting back here, one that we would gladly go coat anytime, so it's great to be back with family, great to be here with, you know, my kids, spending some power's day time with them after all the holidays and birthdays we've missed in the last eight months. mike: alan, you were raised as a military kid. you're also a retired admiral from the navy reserves, so you get it as a family member, you also get it as a deployed person. talk a little bit more about the impact that, you know, deployment has on families. >> yeah. you know, listening to the chief talk about that reminds me of my

experience and many other service members' experience being away from family and friends even just on a regular daily basis. particularly the holidays and special moments like father's day, it's particularly acute. you're away from your family, you're deployed in a hostile environment and really just, you know, longing for that connection back home. so, you know, it's a very difficult environment for our families and for those service members as well that deployed. organizations like the uso, we're here to make sure we keep them strong. the chief was just back as we mentioned earlier from his deployment on george h.w. bush. we have the exciting opportunity to put our first uso center onboard that ship and support that crew full time whether they're in port or at sea. and that's the kind of work that i think we as an organization but, more importantly, the american people can get behind to insure we're keeping our service members and their families strong. mike: chief, you've said the uso is a lifeline when deployed. tell us about that.
