discussion it lasted about 35 minutes, during which time the chinese leader acknowledged that the two sides had candid and in-depth conversation and acknowledged common understanding. it appears that any talk regarding any more contentious topics may have happened away from cameras. remember, this visit was already delayed once after a chinese spy craft was found drifting over the u.s. president biden this weekend called that airspace intrusion silly. but blink's visit he said to the country could serve to ease tensions. the white house recently acknowledged that china had secured a i do buckeye base in china there had been tensions to sooth. this conversation between blinken and xi capped hours of high stakes meeting between the secretary and other chinese officials including top diplomat wang ye, according to the state department, the meeting with ye, quote, underscored the importance of importance and manageability competition between the united states and china through open channels of communication to ensure competition does not veer into

conflict. so really the point of this meeting of this trip was to open those lines of communications between high ranking officials that included military-to-military communication that had been severed after the chinese spy incident had occurred several months ago. guys? >> will: thank you, alexandria, for that report. so this trip to china has been characterized a couple of different ways. congressman michael waltz thinks it's a mistake that we should be putting ourselves. a more aggressive footing when it comes to china. they have given plenty of provocation, dictated the nature of the relationship. while senator rand paul has said we always need to have open lines of communication. that was the position of the trump administration of former president donald trump. i will talk to anybody he famously said. i think it is wise to always keep channel open, to keep a conversation going while being very, very clear-eyed about who it is you are having a conversation with. in this case essentially, a cold war enemy in china. >> ainsley: i think it's interesting, too that they didn't let anybody know or even
