minutes after it left. sunday morning from the mother ship on the surface. there is a fight and 4 mission specialists on board. the new york coastguard and canadian coastguard are using sonar in the search. >> it's a remote area and a challenge to search that area. we are deploying all assets to make sure that we can locate the craft and rescue the people on board. >> the subis the size of a min mini-van. the titanic is 2.5 miles down. the sub had 96 hours of air. right now 60 hours or 2.5 days of oxygen are left.

the sub is operated by ocean gate and charges customers $250,000 for the privilege to see the titanic wreckage for themselves. the company has yet to establish any communication with the crew. the sub is designed to surface by itself if it runs into trouble. so far there is still no sign of it. >> thank you very much. joining me now is michael, a navy diver for 20 years and former director of the dive program at florida state university. you called this a hostile underwater environment. what do you mean? >> any time you work in an extreme depth talking over 13,000 feet, it's going to be a

hostile environment. you have surface conditions to deal with. i don't know what the conditions are where the search is going on. if the vessel is on the surface would be difficult to see. the image you have on-screen you are looking at the top of the submarine. they are looking for radar to see it. >> no one knows where it is at this point? >> well, i don't know what they are doing in the search that is going on. you would know if they found it. >> that we know. one former british navy officer warned of a major concerned. >> they could be entangled in the wreckiage of the titanic. it could have had a catastrophic failure. we don't know. >> entangled in the wreckage.

>> it would have to sit right on it, unless there is some rigging that is floating. the sub would have to be on the bottom. that's a probably. if they are that close to it and had power and slights there is a good chance they could send type of signal to the surface saying we are stuck. i am not sure the equipment attached to that vessel. submarines typically have an emergency response to get to the surface. >> in the navy had any possibility of getting in touch with them even with a robot, they could do that. unless they don't know or it's entangled. you can't ready the tea leaves? >> i would not even attempt to.

there are so many variables at that depth. doing searches, the sonar sound images. down 200 meters the sound that penetrates is minimal compared to the sonar image sounds they are sending down. it's like a ping-pong ball hitting a table. going down 1,000 meters where the titanic sits is like the worst area to penetrate. in fact during the cold war submarines hid there because it's so hard to locate and identify and track any vessel in that area. surface searches with sonar and other technology, that makes it very difficult. they need to track and identify.
