insight as always, thank you. now for the political side of this let's bring in washington examiner political and investigative reporter sarah bedford. this is a former president mike pence and he is talking about the investigation into hunter biden. >> i have a sense that while i welcome these charges and the guilty plea, i have a sense that this will do very little to allay the concerns of millions of americans that we simply don't have equal treatment under the law. >> trace: it's a fair point, sarah, as john was alluding to earlier, a lot of people saying five year investigations, slap on the wrist, i'm not buying it. >> that's right. a lot of what progressional republicans interest has been concentrated on is less what hunter biden actually did with regards to his taxes and this gun violation.
9:13 pm
it's more on how the justice department has handled it over the past five years. take the gun charge alone for example, either hunter biden checks the box certified he was addicted to a controlled substance or he didn't check the box, that should have been an easy one for the justice department to find out. tax evasion charges date back at least five or six years. and for the justice department to have sat on that for so many years and then entered into this sweetheart deal with hunter biden a few weeks after a whistleblower from the irs emerged alleging pretty serious slow walking from the justice department i think you are seeing a lot of frustration from congressional republican that now democrats have a way to sort of brush this aside and say there is nothing more to see here with hunter biden when their interest was never focused on the gun violation or the tax charges themselves. >> trace: it seems like the democrats did more than brush it aside, they forgot about it
9:14 pm
altogether. hunter biden plea deal sparks awkward silence from the democrats. very true. i mean, didn't hear much about it like oh, good it's over, let's move on. >> i mean democrats have been trying to play that card since hunter biden emerged as scrutiny during the 2020 race. the reason why he has been a subject of interest for republicans is because what he did goes really far beyond what he has pleaded guilty to, allegedly republicans are really interested in the influence peddling he was engaged in, this deal does nothing to look at that. the u.s. attorney in delaware did say that that part of the investigation is possibly ongoing, but certainly democrats are going to try to really move on quickly from this now that they have this guilty plea. >> trace: and through all of this, i just want to get your take on this, sarah, did you know joe biden apparently the
