just a month ago, yevgeny prigozhin was hailed by president vladimir putin for seizing the russian city of bakhbut. he was known as vladimir putin's chef because of his hospitality contract. rachel: he was a restaurant tour at a hot dog stand, he leads 50,000 mercenaries. will: he met vladimir putin when he was the mayor, they have been very close. the war has not gone well, vladimir putin has leaned on the wegner group to ultimately help bring the war back. for our viewers, this would be like him because it is not on moscow, the coup is not in the capital city, not as if he marched on washington dc to use our analogy. it would be like the war in iraq wasn't going well, not

comparing blackwater to wegner but they brower contractor group, marching down to kuwait where the centcom headquarters were and said you are not fighting this war properly, we want to take it over. some people are speculating he wouldn't be doing this without the blessing of vladimir putin but for vladimir putin to condemn this action and say you won't be tolerated, that creates a lot of uncertainty over this. these guys are leading the war in ukraine for russia and turning on their own defense secretary, not a good sign at the kremlin. pete: the only adjustment i would offer is it would be like blackwater marching into houston. the movements by the wegner group -- will: inside russia. pete: within the continent of -- if not a straight line, within russia, you can see on the map, just to the east of ukraine.

within the map of russia. it has nothing standing in its way. let's do a quick review, we debate whether to pronounce it waggoner or waggoner, it is named after the german composer wegner. in 2014 during the annexation of crimea, it has evolved to become a private contractor for russia's military. it is not legally registered, i guess legally recognized by any government anywhere in the world. it is a shadow we contractor that is taken on the military responsibilities for much of russia especially in ukraine. rachel: the prisoners are promised you fight for six months, we will take away your sentence and you will be free if you fight on the front lines. you wonder why would russia depend on this group? one of the reasons is they want

dan hoffman, former cia chief served in moscow. help us make sense of what is going on, troops not fighting in ukraine but going back into russia. >> reporter: let me start with background, vladimir putin made a faustian bargain by assigning yevgeny prigozhin the task of fighting in ukraine, they were equipped to do mercenary work in africa and syria but not to go up against a well-trained ukrainian army and they reportedly lost 20,000 men. many of them were prisoners, but still, 20,000 is a lot for his unit. yevgeny prigozhin led his guys to slaughter. that became an x essential threat to his leadership of the wegner group. he has to blame somebody, that is why particularly over the last we 6 weeks we've seen increasingly intense and derisive conflict between the

minister of defense and yevgeny prigozhin. yevgeny prigozhin has been outlandish in his criticism of the russian ministry of defense and the army for not supporting him. this is where it has led. the implications are quite significant for ukraine because the southern military district is responsible for operations inside ukraine. this is a 0-sum game and you know this from having served in the military. of russia is focused on their own internal dissent and treasonous behavior from yevgeny prigozhin at his forces they can't take the fight to ukraine as effectively as they otherwise would. this is another opportunity for ukraine. rachel: vladimir putin says it is a stab in the back and treasonous and he has to take care of this issue in addition to continuing to fight ukraine. how do you think this will affect the war? if anything, directly? >> reporter: vladimir putin issued a warrant for yevgeny prigozhin's arrest.
3:10 am
there's a unit from the federal security service, to make that arrest of yevgeny prigozhin. the concern i have about the war in ukraine as we haven't given ukraine the f-16s, the close air support they need with a long-range artillery they need. this will help ukraine, but the fact that we have been slow, delay giving ukraine what they need to take the fight to the finish could have an impact. pete: be on the war in ukraine how big a threat do you consider this to vladimir putin's maintenance of power in russia? the cover of new york post described as russian rebellion in the sub head calls it a possible coup. does yevgeny prigozhin have the power, does he represent a real threat to the power of vladimir putin in russia? >> reporter: i think the latter putin has the capability and capacity to put down this threat. moscow is on pretty high alert and vladimir putin is exercising great control over

cities along the border with ukraine but the longer impact beyond yevgeny prigozhin, are there others in russia's military, does this lead to russian military units deciding they are not going to fight against ukraine anymore? where this goes, my experience in russia, it never gets any better. i'm sure the intelligence community is tracking closely not even -- no longer vladimir putin asked plans and intentions but how the russian army, the ministry of defense, the security services, the svr, russia's military intelligence, how they are reacting, massive level of unrest for a country with a lot of nuclear weapons the just shipped nuclear weapons to belarus making the region less secure. pete: you have a sense of this head of the wegner group will comply with this arrest? will we see a showdown with vladimir putin's troops firing on his own reserves? >> reporter: i think he is going to not comply with any
