mike emanuel. the world waiting russian presidents next move. lucas thomason is live on the white house lawn, jeff paul standing by. we begin with greg who was live on the ground in ukraine track in the latest. hello, greg. >> it looks like we have walked back from the brink in russia. and a lot of damage done and a lot of questions to answer. the mercenary fighters left last night. they took over the russian city pretty easily as well as other locations including not too far from moscow. headed back to the base camp in ukraine with their boss. it was his anger with russian military and its running of the war in ukraine that triggered this attempted armed uprising. only to be disabused in a deal that came off the hook.

russian military leadership and, yes, sent to be sent to exile in belarus. something like this was going to happen. here in kiev, watching very closely. they have a huge stake in what is happening in south russia. a sign of chaos in the country. into the russian front line here yes, the loser backing most accounts, russian president putin hired fighters running rampant. that is not a good look for a strong man. it is also reported that they are airing an interview with putin today where he says confidence in the military operation. that is what he calls the war here. that confidence probably fairly

well shaken this weekend by the events. mike: what are you hearing about the drama next door and rushed out this weekend? >> they were watching it very closely. president zelensky went on air and said there was confusion, chaos and what we can expect from russia. we have the defense minister going online, tweeting the video , telling russian soldiers in ukraine to go back to their country. that is all when it was still up in the air. the group was going to continue its threat against the russian leaders here. that has passed. people are now assessing. the group, the leadership running operation may take a few days to get their houses back in order again. this is what, mike, the ukrainian military officials are

jeff paul joints being now live. hello, jeff. >> known as putin's chef, catering contracts he earned over the years, a new nickname as the exile mercenary commander heads to belarus with his future very much in the air. after redirecting his private mercenary group away from moscow and away, seemingly, from president vladimir putin. their recent development and its role within russian's invasion of ukraine is very much unknown. a relatively quiet figure outside of russia. the private military in 2014, his soldiers and troops have been instrumental in recruitment and the taking of ukrainian cities like in the east. most recently he started to criticize the russian government

for their missteps in ukraine. that frustration likely boiled over yesterday. >> it could very well be taking it to the defense saying you are all corrupt. i can do this better than you. i am doing it better than he. he is a brutal slaughter or. no better option than putin. >> the question remains what happens next. heading to belarus in exile. not supposed to face any criminal charges within the russian government, but will he ever role with the group? will he have some sort of role as russia continues their invasion in ukraine? that is all very much unknown at the moment. a very long and good memory. it would not come as a surprise to anyone.

if something were to happen to yevgeny prigozhin. >> fascinating. jeff, thank you very much. the attempted insurrection. joining me now as former u.s. ambassador to ukraine a vice president of the united states institute of peace william taylor. great to have you. i will try to boil the questions down for you. what does vladimir putin do now to hold onto power. >> he has a hard time. he has been damaged. he has damaged goods. he does not have the credibility that he had. here we have yevgeny prigozhin, a creation of vladimir putin challenging him. we have putin saying he is a traitor. stabbing people and the nation in the back. trying to have him arrested. and then strikes a deal with

him. so, they both blinked. they both lost credibility as they were heading for this confrontation. >> why did he stop the march to moscow? >> yevgeny prigozhin probably thought that there would be more support. there are a lot of military formations and russia. he thought that maybe some of them, some of these others would join him. that did not materialize and he said he was not going to try. willing to take some kind of deal. mike: let's take a look at the map. they were down here in then they just started marching on their way to moscow. all of a sudden stopped and forces agreed to come back. what happens to him in exile? is he needing to look over his

shoulder? >> bad things happen to people who cross vladimir putin. whether it is poison, whether you get too close to a window and you fall downstairs, there are problems there. as you point out, belarus is actually part of the union state with russia. it is very russia friendly there yevgeny prigozhin has to look over his shoulder. >> does he try again at some point? >> i doubt it. the group may be able to work in africa, latin america where they have worked. in terms of working now on the front lines around where they were, they are divided. the group, some of them, apparently, will go into the defense forces. did not participate in this insurrection. some are unclear.

it is not clear what will happen to them. >> did putin need these guys? >> the war was not going great for them. because they were well paid, they were not part of the ministry. it took them eight months in bakhmut. now they are gone. that gives the ukrainians and advantage. one is because the troops, even though a lot of them were prisoners, they were fighting out. they are now out of the defense. also, the people that are left, the russian soldiers still there trying to defend, this counter thank you they know what's coming. the soldiers are both, fewer of

them now because they see the same chaos in their own chain of command. the ukrainians have an advantage at this point. >> american politics. they worry about the american president in a bubble. i have no doubt that vladimir putin's bubble is more reinforced. what does yesterday and this week and tell him about his power and what his people think him? >> when putin saw the response of people, the civilians and russia to yevgeny prigozhin, they were cheering him. even the soldiers there. they were not opposing yevgeny prigozhin as he walks in. the other thing that putin is worried about is it is not just yevgeny prigozhin, there are other russian units, military formations that actually trained

only approach he can really take. our enemies enemy is not our friend. our enemies enemy is still our enemy, if you will. the fact of the matter is, what happens, what impact does this have on the ukrainian war? are they going to fight as hard and while this insurrection was a distraction over the last few hours, what was ukraine doing on the ground and pushing forward on all of these fronts? this will be an even weaker russian wargame for them. >> hunter biden, president son, takes a plea deal and then he is at the dinner the other night. he is traveling with president biden to camp david. how is all that playing in 2024 politics? >> it is hard to look at this

situation and understand how they are not two tears of justice. the hunter biden situation, you know, at the very least, there has been no investigation into these activities on behalf of foreign governments. if the president was there with him while he is trying to blackmail, i think we should be looking at that. the american people feel that they are owed an explanation as to why they are not considering any of these charges and why he is basically getting away scott free and allowed to attend whatever dinner he would like. >> if i may, i can answer those questions as a criminal defense lawyer. perception is not reality. it is been looked out by the house committee. it was looked by a trumped prosecutor. pursuing this for five years against hunter biden. he came up with two misdemeanors

means. that is still very much an open question. we saw yevgeny prigozhin, the man that started this whole mutiny yesterday as he was leaving that base in the south of russia that his soldiers had effectively taken over, blocked off. yevgeny prigozhin looking happy. looking as if, you know, he really was leaving they are as a hero on his way to exiled the country of belarus. he is a popular guy, but those pictures do not tell us how much support the mutiny itself garnered from the wider population and most importantly the military. lots of dictators out there saying not much. at least some people agree with vladimir putin's view. we also do not know what the deal he struck with the kremlin will allow him to continue his control of his private army. russia's professional army.

integrated into their chain of command. a spokesman said some of the members will not be swearing their allegiance to the ministry of defense. how many? not clear. no word if anyone in the military leadership will get fired. remember, that is one of yevgeny prigozhin chief demands. meanwhile, vladimir putin appears to have avoided a very bloodied internal conflict yesterday. he, too, did not make good on his pledges. he made that promise in his address to the russian people saying he would harshly punish the organizers. what happened? ultimately, we may not know the answer to what happened and what it means for weeks. we may get that information in the clues to what just transpired. we, like many russians right now will have to wait and see.

>> massive blunders. reportedly as many as 200,000 casualties. a massive amount of russian blood and treasure. russia has become a resource colony for china. they are importing cheap chinese manufactured goods. they have lost reportedly a million russian citizens in a massive brain drain and have not succeeded in any of those objectives that would claim to just take days. all of that has certainly brought us to today. his security is more perilous than it has ever been. as we know, that makes the security for the region and the rest of the world very tenuous. because of russia's massive arsenal. >> what are they picking up about this mutiny and russia and do they know if it is truly over >> frankly, i think that it is

just beginning. watching how they navigate the aftermath of this crisis. what i would expect is he would seek to assert control alternatively for any elements in his security services and in the military and purge them. it also means that he has to assert control externally and take the fight against ukraine and show that russia will be able to continue to mount defensive operations. i'm sure they will be launching missile attacks against ukraine. what matters most to vladimir putin, you just cannot betray him. he said that publicly. revenge for him knows no borders and i fully expect him to track yevgeny prigozhin, to use his infiltration of belarus security services to do that. i would not be surprised if he sought to mount the legal operation to target yevgeny

prigozhin. >> i have heard it described as a russian organized crime family with putin at the top and yevgeny prigozhin being one of his captains. how shocking does this make all of this? >> well, it is, i think, should not have been too shocking for us. yevgeny prigozhin has been very outspoken the last few months. he put his leadership on the line. he himself was in bakhmut and took 20,000 of his guys to slaughter their. had he not blame the ministry of defense for those losses, he would have facing an existential crisis himself as a leader of the wegner group. he took it to vladimir putin pretty hard. you typically do not get away with that. he crossed a redline. the larger question is whether this will be simply a dress rehearsal for some other anti-putin elements. i am sure that that is something we will be tracking very, very

begin their summer recess to break down the remaining opinions we are joined by carrie and robert. welcome to both of you. >> thanks, mike. >> affirmative-action. university of north carolina case. carrie, let me start off with you. ten public institutions consider race as a means towards admissions? >> the supreme court has dealt with this for years and years and cap on saying they are trying to get the government out of looking at race. that is what the 14th amendment looks like. not discriminating on the basis of race. the problem is, what we see is unc still having racial preferences in their admissions. it has a serious effect when it is a zero-sum game. if you are getting a leg up

because of their race, that means you are giving some people leg down and that is affecting a lot of asian americans across the country. it has not been as hurdles on this issue until now. >> the public university north carolina, the private school harvard university, how do you see these affirmative-action cases? >> it is going to be interesting. they have been all over the place with their view of jurisprudence. the race can be used as one of the many factors in order to promote diversity because diversity is in and of itself when it comes to college education. many expect this court will overturn the affirmative-action which will lead the way to overturning that and corporate america and other institutions. that is a slippery slope that many people are afraid of.

we could be undoing a century of this. >> staying on the education theme. abided administration wants to provide student debt relief. we know congress has the power. do we believe that the supreme court will hammer them on trying to wipe out student debt? >> i think it is pretty clear. trying to shoehorn one of the largest expenditures in american history into a law that really did not contemplate giving massive student debt relief beer trying to do that is just not legal. the question the court will struggle with is not whether it is legal, i think that is a clear thumbs down. it is whether these are the right parties to bring that down. i think if a court does get to the issue, there is no question they will say, sorry, this is something congress could do for sure but a president cannot unilaterally forgive that debt. >> i think we will get to the

issue because it will be thrown out. the court recently told justice kavanaugh throwing out a case on standings on immigration issues being thrown out on the questions of standing. the attorney general don't even alleged to any of these suits. because of that, if you give them the opportunity to bring suit on behalf of other people you will be changing years of jurisprudence. i do not see this as becoming an issue for the supreme court decision. >> what other cases are you closely watching? >> there are some really important religious freedom cases coming up this week. having to do with lori smith web designer who says she wants to make wedding websites and custom designed these sites but she does not want to be forced to do that for those that compromise.

the postal worker who chose to work at the post office. a very strong religious belief you should not work on sundays. they did not use our work on sundays and now they do and they are not giving him a religious exemption. we will see where they go with those decisions. >> i think those two cases are important. i think we will see a split decision on those cases. there is a case to be made. reasonable accommodations can be created. christian on sunday, but some work on ramadan and et cetera. the issue with the web designer case, i think that that will be ruled against the designer. that could lead to an undercutting of the interstate commerce clause. the federal government regulating private activity. simply saying i have a religious belief saying i don't want to make a website for gay couples, what will stop you from saying i've a religious belief i do not
