quite a scare as you watch the alligator, he decides to take after the fisherman. you've been on enough golf courses to know this is a possibility. everybody was fine and safe. but the creature had to get returned to the pond. i would have screamed, too. >> bret: you have to run sideways. great to be with you today. >> dana: thank you for being here. "the faulkner focus" is up next. sandra smith is in for dana. >> sandra:. a revote threatening put-in. as the dust settles the world watches for put-in's next move. i'm in for harris. the wagner mercenary group led by prigozhin was supporting russia and a sudden rebellion in
8:01 am
a matter of hours they took control of a key military base in southwest russia. they got as close as 120 miles from the russian capital. their leader struck a sudden deal agreeing to go into exile in belarus and avoid prosecution. antony blinken calls the weekend's events extraordinary. >> we haven't seen the last act. we're watching it closely and carefully. 16 months ago russian forces were on the doorstep of kiev in ukraine thinking they would take the city in a matter of days and thinking they would erase ukraine from the map as an independent country. now over the weekend they have had to defend moscow, russia's capital of mercenaries are putin's own making. it raises profound questions and shows cracks. putin has more to answer for in the weeks and months ahead. >> sandra: a former russia ambassador said it is a fresh reminder of a long-held nuclear fear.
8:02 am
>> he is known quantity. hardened adversaries of the united states. the alternative could be worse. i think the biden administration is rightfully concerned. chaos and uncertainty in russia with their nuclear arsenal is very dangerous for the world. >> sandra: daniel davis is here to weigh in. first greg palkot is live in ukraine's capital of kiev for us with the latest at this hour. hi, greg. >> hi. we have new developments following a wild weekend in russia as the folks here in ukraine frankly around the world try to figure out what is happening there after a deal was struck the wagner group pulled out of locations it had seized in the russian city and closer to moscow. not known where they are now or what their future is. in the past ten minutes we got an audio message via telegram from the leader of the group. prigozhin said, i'm quoting.
8:03 am
let me pull it up one moment. sorry. one moment. he is saying we want to hold accountable those who made mistakes during the special military operation. didn't march to overthrow the russian leaders. we turned around to avoid spilling blood of russian soldiers. sounding still defiant there, sandra. a word from moscow is that he still could be liable for criminal charges, mutiny and treason. one of the targets of his anger was the defense minister shoigu touring a base in eastern ukraine. the kremlin issued a new video of russian president putin said to be addressing remotely a youth forum. russia media was unusually harsh in its criticism of the government's handling of the crisis. while ukraine looks to see how to take advantage of things, some russian units have been shifted during the unrest. ukraine military new reports today making important inroads
8:04 am
both in the south and the east. officials here including one member of parliament we spoke with think any loss of prestige for the russian leader is good for ukraine. >> how much damage was done to putin? >> i think huge despite -- huge absolutely. he lost a lot of reputation within the russia and deaf niftily he lost a reputation among countries and leaders. >> sandra, just to return to this message. the last ten minutes from prigozhin. the critical thing is we don't know where he is releasing this from or whether he is back in ukraine, whether he is in belarus or somewhere else. he still sounds defiant. the march showed serious security problems in the country is what he says. again, we turned around to avoid spilling blood of russian soldiers. what got folks in russia very angry was there was blood
8:05 am
spilled. several helicopters and a fixed wing plane of the russian air force were shot down by his fighters. according to russian media 13 russians soldiers were killed and still on the hot seat with russia. he sounds like he is still defiant. back to you. >> sandra: the latest developments at this hour. headlines on russia's internal rebellion. the u.s. needs a diplomatic blitz to fill the power vacuum the wagner coup leaves behind. one says americans know victory in ukraine matters. a win for ukraine is very or somewhat important to our own interests. the party breakdown shows it is bipartisan that opinion. 86% of democrats, 71% of republicans agree on the matter. retired army colonel davis joins us now. cull, thank you for your time.
8:06 am
i will get to the polling in a minute. do you agree with that statement that this revolt has done permanent damage to vladimir putin? >> it's impossible to say that right now. without question it has diminished putin. it has shown that really two things. first that these things did not happen suddenly. this was going on really since february and then it exploded in may where prigozhin was accusing the russian senior military leadership of actually attacking his forces, intentionally withholding ammunition to cause casualties. putin took no action and didn't do anything to change the dynamics there or to rein in prigozhin and it exploded when it came out over the weekend and where he will take heat internally and have to answer for some of that. but one of the reasons he was hesitant to do that is because the wagner group has been uniquely successful.
8:07 am
the only offeoffensive -- now h indecision has cost him both. >> sandra: now to the poll where a majority of americans say victory in ukraine matters. that is bipartisan thinking on this matter. what do you make of these u.s. -- calls for u.s. diplomatic blitz after this rebellion? what direction do you want to see us take this? >> there is no blitz to make. this is an internal issue that will be decided by russia and whether we do something internally, we're already enemies and it won't change anything. no one will make any different decisions in russia on any side of this. but one of the reasons you see these high numbers is because you have this incessant notes from the administration, from a lot of western media about how we have to defend and they say that it is important. but the real truth is that look,
8:08 am
militarily as i've said many times. there is no path to military victory for ukraine. to go down the path when it won't happen militarily is setting people up for some problems here. if we think and proclaim we can influence issues in russia with more diplomacy, i think again we're setting ourselves up for disaster. i don't see any of that is going to happen. >> sandra: i'll ask you what happens next while i put the fox headline on the screen for our viewers along with that map. the fighting along the road to moscow. this is the headline. china maintains support for russia after aborted wagner mutiny. to that you say what? china's involvement obviously has been key here. >> yeah. look, they continue to find the delicate balance. they don't want to alienate ukraine or europe or russia. and they want to keep that balance going.
8:09 am
so i don't see any chance that china would ever take a passive role if it looked like anything would happen negative to russia. they would step in there. they want russia as a counter balance and need them to remain viable but want to keep business aspects going on an markets in europe. a huge market for them. they get lots of food stuffs and other kinds of things that they need from ukraine. so they actually want this to go away but they don't want russia to lose. >> sandra: i sense your urgency. the grand question, what happens next? >> well, i think what happens next is that ukraine tries to take advantage of this on the battlefield and they will probably put in a new push within 24 hours, 48 hours, but unfortunately the fundamentals that have caused them to be unsuccessful in the offensive since the beginning of june continue to be the case. they don't have enough air power, defense, artillery shells and not enough demining continue
8:10 am
and they will lose forces and not gain much territory. >> sandra: i want to move on to china where the president there is a dictator according to our president. secretary of state antony blinken standing by his boss who took that off the cuff jab at xi last week on the heel of blinken's trip to beijing. he was asked about it yesterday. >> one of the things i said to chinese counterparts during the trip was that we're going to continue to do things and say things that you don't like, just as you are no doubt going to continue to do and say things that we don't like. if you look at what comes out of >> was that a strategic remark? >> the president always speaks candidly and directly. he speaks clearly and he speaks for all of us. >> sandra: biden spoke two days after blinken went to china to try to ease tensions talking to supporters as a campaign fundraiser, the president said
8:11 am
the reason why xi got upset when i shot the balloon down with two box cars full of spy equipment, he didn't know it was there. a great embarrassment for dictators. china reprimanded our ambassador over that. what are we to make of all this? >> unfortunately, to me this just shows that we continue to be a very poor at diplomacy in our country. there are lots of things we need to push back on china for and lots of things they're doing with stealing inelectric to all property and military and security issues in the south china sea. but we have to try to get positive outcomes for our side. if you just use really school yard taunts against their leader, it is not going to further american interests. it won't give our diplomacy a chance to influence chinese behavior. i have think the administration needs to change track and say look, there is a place and time
8:12 am
behind closed doors to be firm and tough and a place for diplomacy so we can have a chance to influence china. otherwise all they do is continue to work against our interests and maybe even accelerate that to our demise. i think the administration needs to get its house in order. more diplomacy between the secretary of state and president and it doesn't look like that happened here. >> sandra: thank you for joining us on all of that. appreciate it, sir. >> always my pleasure, thank you. >> sandra: president trump's indictment is not hurting him in the polls and the republican field is close to a dozen. so doe competition is really a good thing. plus basement biden was his 2020 campaigns like 2024 may be 20202.0. power panel next on that and his growing questions about his age and acuity. >> every week and every month there is a new gaffe.

>> sandra: it's back to the future for the biden campaign no matter what the polls say. axios put it this way. biden's 2024 vision, pray 2020 again. biden's decision to run on past legislative victories rather than make big promises for new policies reflects his top advisors' confidence the country is heading in the right direction. voters disagree. nearly 3/4 of those surveyed say the country is on the wrong track. e also growing concerns about the president's age, of course, even the networks are pressing democrats about that

issue. >> does he have the mental and physical health to serve? you were just with the president at the state dinner. do you have any concerns? >> he did so well at that state dinner. i think we all saw his power at the state of the union. our party is united behind him. why? we work in a results-oriented business, chuck. he has gotten results. >> sandra: former senior communications advisor to senator chuck grassley and former advisor to the democratic senate committee. you can't blame them. if they go with basement strategy it worked last time. is this time any different? >> much different when you have joe biden's team saying that they will get out there and sell his agenda. the issue isn't the american public isn't aware of the agenda but they are very aware of it and it has harmed the american public. votes don't approve it.
8:20 am
74%, almost 3/4 say the country is heading in the wrong direction. so you are seeing him, weird dynamic where they want to say everything is great but the american public isn't buying that. they want him to go out there and sell his agenda but no policy platform on his website. he hides from the press, voters, not doing many events. it is because any time he is out there he is gaffe prone and why you see in the poll, too, which i thought was interesting. 43% of democrats are questioning joe biden's age, stability, ability to do the job long term and stamina. that's a huge problem just there. other figures like 55% of democrats don't want him to run again. that's not getting to a general election. voters will ask themselves in a year from now were they better off four years ago? no. inflation is worse than it was. the border is worse than it was than three years ago. crime is worse than it was three
8:21 am
years ago. international crises are worse than they were three years ago. joe biden will have to do something different here if he wants to hide in his basement, i don't think people will buy that. he has to get on the campaign trail and tough for him to sell an agenda people don't like. >> sandra: you take one of those issues like gas prices. they tout the recent drop in prices but that's a recent drop from the highs we went up to under the presidency. why the insistent touting legislative victories when 75% of the country say we're going in the wrong direction? >> there is a lot to unpack. i hope i get to do all of that. first, you can't look at polls. the reason you can't, let's look at the mid-terms. you had very similar low approval rating for joe biden.
8:22 am
republicans saying i was going to drown as a democrat in the tsunami, a red wave and it did not happen. you can't believe the polls. i haven't believed the polls since 2016 and i don't think most people should. we have a number of outlying polls. we are far out from the election. >> sandra: you disagree that people aren't happy. >> i say as americans honestly we regardless of facts, it is feelings, right? it is our feelings as voters. but whether it's a democrat or republican. happy or unhappy or perceived to be happy or unhappy based on those facts, the overwhelming majority of us on the left vote for ou right vote for the republican candidate. the independent voters in the swing states is what it comes down to. five areas in the nation that end up deciding especially the general election and have for the past few election cycles.
8:23 am
in addition 2020 -- >> sandra: so what are the legislative victories they can run on? >> there are many and the legislative victories i would disagree with garrett were not only victories for the nation and american people they are what voters wanted. >> sandra: i just asked for one. >> when it comes to prescription drug prices, infrastructure, economy, child poverty, i could go on and list 24 but we don't have time. >> sandra: time is an issue. let's put it on the screen. former president trump does remain president biden's top republican challenger in 2024. in the latest polls, leslie, his lead has only grown since the federal indictment in the classified documents case. a new poll at 51%, up five points since april and 30 points ahead of his nearest competitor which is florida governor ron desantis from whom we just heard. the g.o.p. field grew to a dozen
8:24 am
candidates and people say it will only help president trump. one candidate doesn't see it that way. >> why are you better than anybody else in the republican field, a dozen candidates, to take on joe biden in november? >> i don't think a dozen candidates is too many. competition is great. for america it's great and great for the republican party and great for voters to have choices. >> sandra: competition is always great, garrett. is a bigger field better or worse for the leading candidate, which is former president donald trump right now? >> i think weather if this was a question of donald trump being 28% and next closest person at 17% i would say it is. donald trump is eating up 50, 60% of the vote. folks thought when florida governor ron desantis would get in it would change it and a non-factor. he sucks up all the occupational and king of the republican party right now until proven
8:25 am
otherwise. really that's been the case since he almost walked down the escalator in 2015. even if it was a one-on-one match-up. it will be tough to beat him. the attacks continue to help him and voters trust him in the republican primary to take on joe biden as well. i don't think the field necessarily matters. >> sandra: the same poll shows president biden beating former president trump 49% to 45% in a hypothetical general election showdown. biden's four-point lead is within the poll's margin of error and biden and florida ron desantis tying at 47% each. i know you aren't buying the polls, leslie. perhaps you could weigh in with your reaction. >> yeah, what these polls show you can always look at numbers and extrapolate something. what we extrapolate is a very divided nation, almost 50/50, which speaks to what i said
8:26 am
earlier, which is you have republican voters and democratic voters and the little sliver in between and that is within that margin of error and what decides the general election. i would agree with what garrett said. i would agree that donald trump is still the king of the republican party. i would also say that he will be. i said this before. he will be the gop nominee but i will also say as i've said before that joe biden will be victorious over him. the reason for that is, it's not even just about policies, a lot of my republican friends that voted for him once or twice donald trump, that is. don't want to go back to some of the shenanigans and want decorum brought back to the white house. >> sandra: i appreciate the discussion. great to see you. the white house still mum on the latest news about hunter biden and the big guy. also moving the goalpost on the president and his son's business dealings. plus the biden administration

judge about a possible injunction the state is seeking to block the implementation of this policy in the interim. i'm also hearing back from one of the three districts in new jersey in the past ten minutes they tell me their goal is to have a meeting with the attorney general and to craft some sort of compromise to amend the policy in a way that could possibly serve as a model here in the state and across the country moving forward. we'll send it back to you. >> sandra: nate foye, thank you so much. president biden and the democratic party are facing accusations of plotting to make artificial intelligence woke. a conservative watchdog group is claiming the administration is trying to populate a.i. platforms with its political ideology. the white house says it is just putting out a blueprint for an a.i. bill of rights. you should not face discrimination by algorithms and

systems should be used and designed in an equitable way. they say the prospect of a.i. being rigged by the left is orwellian. the woke never miss an opportunity to seize power. all americans need to know what biden and his cronies are up to. what could go wrong? >> what did ronald reagan once say? i'm here from the government and i'm here to help. frightening words that a politician could possibly say. in general, i am afraid of anything the government has its hands on, the more control they have, the worst usually is for us. but the scariest part is that at its core, wokeism is the rejection of objective truth. that onto itself is frightening

and combine it with a tool that has the potential to be the most wonderful or destructive force that man has ever developed, and i think that you have a potential recipe for disaster when the government gets involved. >> sandra: if they are going on offense, the other side is on defense. what are conservatives doing about it? >> well, i know there is a lot of talk about it. one of the most frightening things is that it's not like somebody like myself who started a business in his office basement a few months ago using some online tools where access is available to all of us, the people who are developing these a.i. are in silicone valley, the upper echelon of the tech realm and the barrier to entry is very frightening. i do think that even as a rule i

am opposed to government intervention on most things, i do recognize the need for it. i think that we need to be very loud and be very vocal getting ahold of your senators and representatives. most people don't understand it. i don't understand artificial intelligence, i write movie reviews. >> sandra: a lot of americans are trying to wrap their mind around it and it's here and infiltrating our lives. your website worth it or woke launched in february as you just mentioned, as an alternative to rotten tomatoes. my question to you is how has that been so far? what kind of response are you getting? >> well, it's really been amazing. a real blessing. just normally we were doing -- doubling month over month, which was incredible and i'm happy to have. just a month ago we had a rather mocking piece written about us

in the rolling stone and that has snowballed to the point where here i am live with you and our viewership we're sitting at almost 300,000 views this month alone. it has been incredible. really been a blessing and i'm excited to see how far it will go. >> sandra: people sit down and see a new movie and want to know if it's worth their time. you are setting out to help them do that. what did you give the disney little mermaid reboot? >> i'm not exactly sure of the exact number. i believe it was in the 30s. and to be fair, our website only considers wokeness as one fifth of its overall rating criteria. we are a movie review website and try to separate that. so even with its horrible woke score it was down in the 30s. we have movies we've rated

fairly low in wokeness -- high in wokeness but have been rated relatively high as a film overall. >> sandra: we'll check it out. worth it or woke. thank you for joining us. thank you for watching "the faulkner focus." i will see you back in an hour for america reports. we have a state department and white house briefing. stay tuned for that. "outnumbered" is after the break. take out an average of $70,000, pay off debts and high rate credit cards, and save hundreds every month.
