[laughing] >> everybody loves a bargain, sandra. >> sandra: from your own backyard, thank you. trace? >> trace: nicely done between inflation, fuel efficiency and electric vehicle, gas profits down. looking to take a road trip, many states tack on mileage tax to make up the difference. arlington virginia, what are you hearing about this? >> what we are hearing across the board and across the country is that the money states collect from the sale of gas, it is plunging. number 1 gas powered vehicles a lot more fuel-efficient than they used to be, number 2, more and more americans are buying electric vehicles every year. leaving state governments with a lot less money for road improvement projects and upkeep.

there have anything creative. some critics might argue invasive. some states turning to mileage taxes for electric vehicle owners. organon, virginia, utah have programs in place for ev owners opt in to having mileage tracker placed in their cars so they are taxed for every while they drive since they are not paying gas taxes. some drivers have serious privacy concerns about putting government tracking device in their cars. another approach states are taking this attack on registration and other fees for hybrid and electric vehicle owners could cost hundreds of dollars depending on which state you're in. right now almost 3 dozen states have these fees. we have been talking to drivers at this gas station as given, gas into their vehicles. they tell us only fair for ev owners to pay up, even if they are not filling up. >> first of all, i have no

intention to ever buy ev vehicle. i would assume they need to be taxed for the electricity they're using to drive on same roads. >> the roads get beat up, you know, by vehicles on the road. so, why should they not have to pay for use of the roads? >> if all of those taxes and fees are not enough, new york city got approval from the federal government to launch first in nation congestion pricing program charging drivers as much as $23 just to drive into downtown area during peak hours they say will help with congestion and traffic. they also say, trace, better for the environment even though not been for wallet. >> trace: california highest gas tax, losing most money, scrambling to get ideas. grady, thank you. >> sandra: bring in our panel. chief economist and former

now is running half that. at the end of the day, problem consumers have in the country as a result of everything that has happened last few years is that total price level all the things i consume is nearly 20% higher today than it was before covid. level of increase over that period unlike that we have seen in multiple decades. remnants of the economy, policy, covid, etc. is higher price level people are going to be dealing with years to come. >> sandra: to that remarkable moment that i meant to put out a second ago. that is this claim about everybody just loving how the economy is going. >> president's economic policy credit there were incredibly popular. investing in roads, bridges airports.we asked people what they think about educating and empowering workers. when you ask people how they feel about manufacturing jobs and investing in america. incredibly popular.

>> sandra: you can pull up the boxes polling, current economic conditions are doing well for them. positively in the nation 18%, personally 34%. negatively overwhelmingly majority people see this economy, how can they make that claim, jason? >> if you look at the economic data as we agreed, unemployment only decade low. inflation too high. unbalanced people or worried about inflation than they are excited about unemployment rate. i think with the white house seemed to be saying, when you look at their policies. policies themselves are popular. if a structure they touted, bipartisan legislation. the chips legislation they did. bipartisan legislation. both parties joining together, president trump had also talked about and had been enthusiasti about doing .

dispatcher movement; wiser such a shortage? >> i think it is a really hard job.i don't think it is something comes to mind for a lot of people when they think of providing emergency services. we would not be able to do our job is police require without them. we call them the first, first responders. >> trace: amazing to me, you groundless. you forget it is not just police, not just fire, dispatchers are calling ambulances. they are calling suicide prevention hotlines. 9-1-1 dispatchers are literally saving lives because they are the ones who get the resources to where the resources need to go. talk about that if you would, sir. >> sure, like i said, a difficult job. they had to be on their toes. have excellent communication skills. they have to be able to work various computer programs. more importantly, empathetic, connect with people and provide excellent customer service. >> trace: is there any kind of, you know, the police officer

bonus is $8000 to get new police officers to sign on, dispatcher $10,000, to have any pushback on that from anybody? >> actually, the fairies. we offer $7000 new officer no experience but we do have a $10,000. conversations happen behind the scenes. at this point, critical need and do our best to fill positions. >> trace: i am here is, sergeant, if these are pushing bigger cities, do you think maybe national training centers for 9-1-1 dispatchers because they are so interval and important to the kind of orchestration of first responder; do you think there should be something set up like that like we do for air traffic controllers? to make sure we have plenty of people to do these jobs because it is so important as a national asset? >> that might be a way to get them in door. each jurisdiction operates differently and independently. they would have to be trained

on specifics of the organization. so, nothing replaces on-the-job training. but it is nima process to get a dispatcher upand running. so, it is not easy, but rewarding career. right there on the front lines with us . >> trace: i am curious when you see shortage, how have you filled the void? if teams out of the field and you've got different things coming in, how in the world ? do you have officers going in and sitting in positions? or what is the backfill situation there? >> when we do have those vacancies it means everyone else wears additional hats. ideal center when you have a fully staffed, you have someone who is the call taker. then someone simultaneously dispatching that out and getting the help where they need to go. right now, process does get slowed impact response times. we do what we can fill. merging different channels unfortunately, both police have hard times.
