10:02 am
c.b. cotton in new jersey, how are things looking there today? >> hi, bryan. severe weather this afternoon could be the biggest threat to holding up people's travel plans, faa is warning everyone to check flight itinerary. cancellations are more than double. threat of storms from southern new england to the northwest, and northern plains and the east coast. last week severe weather in the northeast and across the midwest canceled tens of thousands of flights. airline and air traffic control staffing shortages made matters worse. united airlines was the most impacted and gave 30,000 frequent flyer miles to those hit with flight delays. some travelers waited in long lines to try to reschedule. others slept in airports hoping to catch a departing flight.

10:07 am
wrong and who it hurts most. we appreciate a little of your extra time here around this special holiday celebrating the birth of america. when we talk about this crime that we are seeing and we go coast to coast, we can start in baltimore, on the hunt for a suspect in this very brazen shooting that occurred, and go all the way to san francisco, enormous problems around homelessness and drug abuse and drug addiction, and it's really having domino effect. i want to get your thoughts on the political situation as we are heading closer to potentially seeking some solutions. voters heading to the polls in 2024. your thoughts. >> yeah, i think the first step as with any public policy issue is admitting that there's a problem, and you know, for a while, particularly in the lead-up to the crime spike of 2020, there was a political split in terms of who was willing to admit that america was struggling with a crime problem.
10:08 am
many people on the left in the democratic party denying the crime spike as it occurred, telling people to essentially not believe their lying eyes. we do seem to have reached a point many on the left are willing to admit there's a problem but i don't think that we have gotten over the political divide as to the understanding of the nature of that problem. right now the political dynamics are such people on the right see the problem as one most effectively dealt with by police, other elements of the traditional justice systems, prosecutors, prisons. people on the left think they can solve it through public policy, spending on social programs and education and until we get to a point of agreement on the fundamental nature of that problem, i think we are doomed to fail in many of these cities as the statistics show us. >> a congressman from maryland was speaking earlier, he is seeking the senate seat in
10:09 am
maryland, he said this regarding the recent crime in baltimore. says i was with the mayor the other day and when he was here the city was over a million people, 300 murders. now we are at 575,000 people and still 300 murders. we have clearly lost control of the criminal system in baltimore city and talked about education being part of the answer. your thoughts on that being part of the strategy on some democratic candidates and if it would have a swift enough effect on what we are dealing with across the country. >> there are good reasons to invest in the public education system and why we should look at that but not a solution to the crime problem. this fundamentally misunderstands the nature of the problem, functions as a distraction from an uncomfortable reality on the left, any crime reduction plan
10:10 am
is going to have to put policing, prosecution and incarceration front and center, no getting around that. and until we come to the realization, we are going fob doomed to see the repeated crimes by repeat offenders. if we catch the suspects that committed the atrocity in baltimore, if you look at their criminal histories, multiple arrests, active criminal justice statuses and lengthy rap sheet we see over and over again. the only way to stop it to through the criminal justice system. >> thank you so much. appreciate your time. one of the issues talked about coast to coast is san francisco where they have the additional addiction and homelessness problems. we are seeing that in a number of cities across the country. we can talk about crime from the aspect of the really big crimes, the murders and violent crime, but also the aspect that drives businesses and homeowners to seek other places to live.
10:11 am
>> yeah, absolutely. the quality of life, the perception of feeling unsafe matters so much not only from the business side but whether or not you are going to raise a family and we are seeing that across the board. you were talking about baltimore. the mayor there, brandon scott, making a big deal out of the illegal guns, confiscated 1400 guns, and they want to go after ghost guns but a small percentage of the guns out there, so-called ghost guns. rafael hit on the point there, a difference in priorities. and we are not even in the middle of summer yet. we'll see what happens in baltimore, hope they catch those guys. >> and we have the holiday is not over yet. a lot of folks have tomorrow off. warm weather. we'll see. >> major changes at twitter. ceo elon musk announcing the platform is now limiting the number of tweets you can view. and as you might imagine, some users are not all that thrilled about it. >> plus, new scrutiny over the

doj handling of the hunter biden probe and some shocking new images of the president's son emerge. we will show them to you and get charlie hurt's reaction next. >> the question is, did his father profit and benefit from those particular dealings around energy companies in those places where his son had no experience in the energy business whatsoever. i brought in ensure max protein with 30g of protein. those who tried me felt more energy in just two weeks. uh... here i'll take that. -everyone: woo hoo! ensure max protein with 30 grams of protein, one gram of sugar. enter the nourishing moments giveaway for a chance to win $10,000. our ears connect us to the moments that matter. give them the nutrients they need with lipo. it's formulated with ingredients clinically shown to protect your ears from dizziness, ear ringing, and even hearing loss. never miss a moment with lipo flavonoid.

10:17 am
david, over more scrutiny how the doj handled it. mark, has the white house tried to distance itself from hunter from all of these legal issues? >> molly, good afternoon. no, not at all. we have seen the first son, hunter biden, making a few different appearances at the white house, both on social and formal settings over the last couple of days. scandals involving the first son could be complication, if not a liability for the president's re-election efforts. republicans up on capitol hill continue to talk about hunter biden, furious with the justice department after a plea deal ensures hunter will not go to jail for tax fraud, but lawmakers say it may not be fair after two whistleblowers came forward saying the investigation was not handled properly. over the weekend, the u.s. attorney in delaware told lawmakers he was not prevented from handling charges in multiple jurisdictions and will address the whistleblower
10:18 am
complaints eventually. republicans are seething mad and demanding testimony and documents, democrats say they have confidence in the u.s. attorney. >> isn't the source weiss? if weiss was saying that, i would have a concern. if weiss was saying i didn't have total authority, there was interference, but weiss -- weiss is the key person and he's not saying that. and there were charges that were pursued. >> meantime, the "new york times" published a deep dive on hunter biden's daughter in arkansas. hunter recently reaching a deal through child support, he will turn over some profits of the paintings he makes in order to cover the 4-year-old girl's expenses. "the times" wrote the president has not yet met or publicly ment mentioned his other grandchild, the white house traditionally does not answer questions when it comes to the first family.
10:19 am
they say hunter biden is a private citizen, but republicans of course continuing to say they are going to investigate, not only happened with past business dealings and the biden family but what's happened with the justice department in this case. so it's an issue, molly, that's not going away any time soon. >> molly: you covered a lot of ground for us, mark meredith, thank you for your reporting, mark. have a wonderful 4th of july. >> bryan: charlie hurt, thanks for being here. you heard congressman ro khanna say look, i'm going to take david weiss's word on this. he had -- he says he had the authority to pursue the charges and the full authority, but the same time in the same statement from david weiss he said he was geographically limited where he could charge hunter for taxes. i'm wondering, your republicans,
10:20 am
i imagine the first people you want to speak to. >> oh, yeah, absolutely and i think that -- and i think that a lot more about this is going to come out if for no other reason because of the statement. the statement made absolutely no sense. the very meat of the pressure that people suspect was born by weiss is the fact that he was geographically limited. so when he says i had free rein and ultimate authority any way i wanted and any place i wanted but was geographically limited, like saying yes/no, and i'm not guilty but i'm guilty. there is no doubt that hunter biden got unbelievable cover, and the entire biden family, not just about hunter biden, the entire biden family because of so many of the questions we are talking about here do extend beyond just hunter biden. there's no question that he was being covered by doj officials
10:21 am
in the -- in the district of columbia and in the state of california, and weiss's statement even as he says oh, no, i had a free rein, admits that. >> bryan: miranda devine writes, blowing the lid off the cover of hunter biden's plea deal, and writes now comes the messy business of covering up the cover-up. either weiss lied to his team on october 7th or garland lied to congress. he told congress weiss has full authority to bring cases in other districts if he needs to do that. and weiss said he had been granted the ultimate authority over the matter, including responsibility for deciding where, when and whether to file charges. he did not say full authority. do you think this is going to extend to merrick garland and pointing to the fact there seems to be a lot of legalese here as to ultimate authority, full authority, that you know, probably needs to be answered at
10:22 am
some point somewhere. >> absolutely, bryan. and no doubt they are playing sort of word games here and by the way weiss is playing word games which is extremely concerning because obviously you would like to think that weiss is trying to pursue the truth here and when you play word games about something like this, you think ok, maybe you are not trying to pursue the truth, maybe you are trying to cover things up. but all of this comes with the backdrop of hunter biden's ex-business partner, devon archer apparently is going to be testifying before a congressional committee. you've got two committees, judiciary committee and the house oversight committee looking into this and they are going -- there is no doubt they are going to get closer and closer, even with the ground work that has been laid by the irs whistleblowers who have raised additional very
10:23 am
disturbing questions about whether merrick garland, weiss and others have been telling the truth. i suspect that this is going to -- this is going to -- this is not going to go away any time soon. >> bryan: i want to switch over to the supreme court decision. democrats are coming out and saying essentially this is dangerous, the three decisions the past week by the conservative justices amount to a dangerous precedent, impeachment, buzz words thrown out there. threatening ethics guidelines, they want to put term limits, they are talking about expanding the court. is this different, does this hit differently with the american people and is this more real of a threat from democrats than what we have seen in the past? >> well, i think that it's a very crafty effort by democrats to try to discredit the supreme court at a time when they don't like the rulings that are coming out. and even -- you can cherry pick
10:24 am
through some of the rulings and you might find a majority of americans who don't necessarily agree with every ruling but that's sort of not the point of the supreme court. the supreme court is supposed to be, you know, outside the pursue of electoral politics, which is the whole point of having that third branch. but democrats are very upset about this. they have decided to try to do everything they can to vilify the specific members of the court. we have seen them, you know, calling justices by name, making threats against justices by name, they are creating a very hostile environment. again, this is not the way the supreme court is supposed to work. and -- but i think that it goes to show just how desperate they are because they have sort of relied on the judiciary for decades now to get things through that they can't get through electorally through the political system. and so you know, all of these
10:25 am
threats -- i think they would take advantage of them if they could because we have seen the lengths they go to to win their political arguments even if it's outside the political system, but i ultimately think that -- i don't think they'll be successful, largely because the upcoming elections are going to serve some pretty just desserts to democrats now in congress. >> bryan: president biden saying the court was not normal and thinks it would make the court more political. charles, thank you you, charlie hurt, appreciate it. >> great to see you, bryan. >> shocked, this thing happened, all my collection last 17 years, a lot of things are hard to find now, and everything is gone. there's nothing left. >> molly: a southern california wine store left shattered after an elaborate heist. you will not believe the value of all the bottles the bandits

10:34 am
what we have to remember, we live in a giant economy and a giant country. 350 million people of us plus, so there are a lot of regions doing better than others, industries doing better than others but many of them are also struggling and i have concerns going forward. we have seen construction industry and the technology industry suffer from a lot of job losses and manufacturing has been down for the past 5 to 6 months, according to the institute of supply managers. so, although there is some strength in employment in some areas, there is also a lot of concern in other areas, and molly, it all comes down to inflation and interest. i think those are the two driving things that are really going to have a big and unfortunately negative impact on the economy over the next few months. >> molly: i want to get talking about in a second, but the overperforming job sectors, what does that mean? you would think initially there is some good news there. but is there concerns about
10:35 am
where this goes as we round the corner, still facing high interest rates, facing the inflation and the supply chain issues. >> yeah, sure. here is the thing. a lot of these industries themselves are still benefitting from the end of the pandemic, and still are seeing some demand and that's really good news. but you know, the fed started raising interest rates only back in march of 2022, and they went from like 1% to like 5%, like five times they went up. it takes a while for those increase in interest rates to make their way through the economy. so, although it is great that some of these sectors have been seeing improvements, jobs, which is good news, i feel some of them are going to be hit by some rising interest rates, a real risk because of that. the real estate sector alone, many people are unable to sell their homes and buy new homes, not just because the price of housing is so high as it is, but mortgage rates are between 6 and 7%. so if you are sitting on a mortgage like 2 to 3%, you really can't afford to go and
10:36 am
sell yourself and get into another mortgage 3 or 4 more times. >> molly: and a new job, sell the house you have to go to another house and it would all be lost in the mix and in the move, which is a stagnant for mobility. even just something as simple as a car, you know, you might hold on to the old car instead of buying the new car and that has ramifications for a number of broader industries. >> and credit card rates as well are starting to seep up as well as credit card delinquencies. all of those are a concern. my biggest concern is small businesses. 30 million small businesses in this country. when i look and talk to my clients, let's not forget the banks prime rate is 8.5% for their best customers. most of my clients, people running retail shops, restaurants, smaller companies, looking at paying 10, 11, 12% when they want to refinance the working capital loans or expand
10:37 am
business. as a result, a lot of my clients are not doing that. it takes time to make its way through the economy and a lot of the clients i'm talking to are saying we have to put off, we cannot afford the higher interest rates, it does not make sense. i don't think that's really good news in the coming months. >> molly: and what does it mean for the average american family? >> as a lot of businesses start tracking their investments, hiring less as well. so a lot of people are seeing a tight job market, we are already seeing loosening in the job market as well. job openings themselves now, although they were always very high have started to fall as well. unemployment is at a very historical low, but seeing among a lot of my clients they are making less investments and less hiring because the cost of capital is so high. what we saw in the technology and the construction industry, molly, is the beginning. interest rate effects reverberate around the country
