speedo? will: i grew up a swimmer and i played water polo in college, and i don't feel like many do and and i'm not saying you shouldn't feel weird in a speedo, but not for me when you're exercising. so i swam from new jersey -- can i did a pretrial run that pete and i are going to do in august with the seals, and one of the seals invited me this week to do a trial run. so we did the swim from new jersey to statue of liberty, ellis island. carley: well, that's very impressive. will: i will say the biggest takeaway is it's gross. the water, when you get to manhattan is gross. that water right there is clean -- i hope -- pete: except the water in the hudson is, like, 80 degrees -- will: yeah. it's actually not that cold in the hudson, you just have to wade through the floss -- carley: so you're okay with cold water. will: -- and tooth toothbrush brushes and bottle -- pete: i had a telephone pole go by me the first year.

will: a couple of those gigantic logs, i saw it and thought i'll cardiology that, but by the time time i get there, it's gone. stay tuned for that. we haven't gotten approved by management, but we're intent on swimming with the seals in august. pete: that's our plan. will: meanwhile, the yoits has committed to additional security to ukraine, another $can 800 million to ukraine. that brings the total up to $41.3 billion since russia's invasion of ukraine. but the news this week is that the biden administration is committed to serving cluster munitions, cluster bombs to ukraine. here's president biden. >> it's not used in certain areas. they're trying to get through those trenches and stop those tanks from rolling. and so, but it was not an easy decision, and it's not -- we're not signatories of that agreement, but i, it took me a while to be convinced to do it.

but the main thing is they have the weapons to stop the russians now from their, keeping them from stopping the ukrainian offensive through these areas or they done. and i think they needed them. pete: there's also reports that part of the reason this was approved is that both ukraine and the united states are running low on conventional artillery weaponry. so opening it up to cluster bombs opens up a difference part of the arsenal -- a different part of the arsenal because a lot of what we have otherwise is not available is. you mentioned hypocrisy, carley, and we can get into what joe biden said there, but it's a different tune than what last year jen psaki was saying from the podium because with russia a has been using cluster musician -- munitions, and here's what she said about russia's use of cluster bombs in ukraine. >> reporter: there are reports of illegal cluster bombs and vacuum bombs being used by the russians. if that's true, what is the next

step of this administration, and is there a red line for how much violence will be tolerated against civilians in this manner that's illegal and potentially a war crime? >> it is, it would be. i don't have any confirmation of that. we've seen the reports. if that were true, it would potentially be a war crime. obviously, there are a range of international fora that would assess that, so certainly we would look to that to be a part of that conversation. pete: so it's a a war crime if vladimir uses it but not if we supply it. joe biden's right, we're not signatories to this treaty that bans cluster bombs, neither is ukraine. so you can do that. but it's just another escalatio- carley: it's a difficult decision. yeah. and the reason that these cluster bombs are banned in i think it's 200 countries is because it's a big bomb when it drops, there's these little bomblets, and some of them don't detonate. so it could be years down the road a child picks them up, and

and it goes off. things like that have happened before. the united states is now saying that they're going to give ukraine a form of this bomb that has the least potential for these bomblets to not go off. apparently, russia is using them as well, and their detonation if rate, they have a dud rate, rather, of over 25%. pete: yeah. russian munitions have always a had had a very high dud rate. can. carley: so if you're dropping these bombs in a neighborhood say, for instance, and then many years down the road by a playground some little kid picks up something that's shiny and silver and then it go off, that's what you want to avoid. at the same time, i do understand what president biden's saying many that it was a difficult decision because if russia's already using them in trench warfare, pete, you were saying it's difficult to get -- pete: yeah. this is area a pep. a point -- weapon. this is meant to hit a broader area which means you don't know

the impact it will have. and if there's urban fighting, which there has been a lot of it, you're going to have civilians involved. will: my takeaway from listening to jen psaki is twofold. the quality of jen psaki as a press secretary is far superior to that of karine jean-pierre. [laughter] i think. but then i think, well, jen psaki gave a specific answer about cluster bombs being a potential -- in her estimation, the administering's estimation, a war crime. and here they are a year later having to answer for that specificity, and maybe karine jean-pierre's ability to say absolutely nothing at all in the most words possible is actually a tool to never, ever, ever hold the administration accountable for anything. maybe i'm wrong. maybe in the end the superior person is kjp who has mastered the art of saying nothing. but my second takeaway is it's just hard. just really, really hard when you're talking about something as important as war and the united states' commitment to it to, it's just hard. we expect trust from the

administration. and when you're faced with this kind of hypocrisy, it just continues to breed along with the disinformation and propaganda around this entire war effort to grant trust. it's just really hard to grant trust that we're serving the american interest and we're being real. pete: endless, it feels like an endless proxy war. how much are we spending, what is it taking away from our ability to defend ourselves, what's the end state? there's no answers to any of those questions at all. cr well, i'm sure that president zelenskyy is going to be very glad to have these weapons. if russia is using them already, this will be the counter to it and, who knows, maybe this can be one of the things that'll end this war sooner. pete: i doubt it but we'll see. speaking of the war front, this is a sad story that we cover this morning. there was an interpreter in afghanistan, a father of four who served alongside the u.s. army for over a decade. kind of a legend in afghanistan. grew up around green berets,

ended up fighting with them. well, when afghanistan collapsed and the taliban took over, he fled the united states. he moved to philly, but he felt unsafe there by the crime rate in philadelphia, so he and his family moved to washington, d.c., and this week he was shot and killed while driving a lyft washington d.c. so the question is where is it more dangerous, kabul, afghanistan, or washington, d.c.? we had a chance to talk to matthew butler, a lieutenant colonel, who served two tours with nasrat as well as jeremy malone who helped him escape afghanistan. here's their message. >> n -- nasrat was kind of a legend at bagram. he was essentially about a so-year-old -- 10-year-old boy when that happened in 2001. he just hung around us, so by the time i met him in 2009, you know, the stories were still

almost like a folklore so to speak about this kid that -- [laughter] sort of was raised by green berets. he gave us about 18 of those years in service of this country, not his. >> it was important to him to earn every favor that he got. he never wanted you to think he was taking something for free or that he took any help for granted. and he was also committed to helping other afghans that helped us as well. those people were his friends even if he didn't know them. carley: i hate that this happened. this man has four children, the youngest is 15 months also -- old. and his wife said she didn't want him to drive lyft that night for whatever reason, he said, no, i have to, i want to make a little bit of extra money. he was working an honest job and then this is what happens to him. the united states failed this man twice. first, it was in the way that we withdrew from afghanistan forcing him to flee from the taliban and then, second, it's the crime crisis here in the u.s. that ultimately ended his life. this is an absolute tragedy,

with the goal of mending relations between the communist chinese and the u.s. which are strained because of american support for the self-governing island. she's not expected to meet with president xi who called this week, this week he call for enhanced war planning. i think she strikes fear into everybody she meets. new york breaches -- new york beach, excuse me, are bringing in shark-monitoring drones to patrol the stores -- shores following five shark attacks in the span of two days. the new technology will scan for sharks several times per day, and parks officials now saying this video they shared earlier this week is actually not sharks as they originally believed, but instead harmless drone fish. a shark expert will be joining the show in the 9:00 hour to help us, tell us more about how shark drones can help keep swimmers safe. will: overhype the shark story?

pete: yep. it happens. tesla is now promising to promote, quote, core socialist values with chinese car manufacturers, signing a pledge in shanghai on thursday. this comes months after it started a price war with chinese automakers, but now elon musk's electric vehicle giant is vowing not to engage in abnormal pricing and to support economic growth in china. tesla was the only foreign automaker to sign that pledge with values closely linked to the chinese communist party. carley: why. pete: and those are your headlines. so they've decided they'll be socialists so they can sell their cars to the massive market in china because there's no other alternative? is that the deal? carley: yep. will: i think so. i think so. pete: am i right that tesla's headquartered in austin, texas? they moved to austin and now they're signing a socialist pledge in china? will: yeah. pete: i'm really confused.

soon be housed in public schools this summer as new york city mayor eric adams considers using up to 30 empty schools as temporary shelters. the move comes just months after protests erupted over the city's decision to use school gyms as shelters for illegal immigrants. with critic like our next guest slamming the city for using school resources to address biden's border crisis. here to react, new york congressman mike lawler. congressman, good morning. >> morning. thanks for having me. will: so these are in many instances middle schools across the country during the summer, i'm sure the argument being made that they're not occupied by students. but still, we're using our school facilities to house illegal immigrants. >> these are places of learning. they should not be used for housing of anyone, let alone illegal immigrants. we have a crisis in this country created by the biden administration and their failure to secure our border. over 5 million migrants have

crossed over illegally. and this administration's doing nothing to stop it. and eric adams along with new york city's sanctuary policies have created a mess. they've taken in over 80,000 migrants since the spring of last year, they have nowhere where else to house them. they've been trying to ship them up into the suburbs, into the hudson valley and long island, and now they're trying to use schools to house them. we need to secure the border, we need to increase border patrol, need to increase the number of court personnel that hear these asylum cases expeditiously, and new york city needs to change its sanctuary city policies. will: a spokesperson is saying, while this option's not ideal, none are, and we're in no position to take anything off the table. this is just, as you said, this is a consequence of sanctuary city policies. this is -- nothing is ideal, then why do you have this policy that creates situations that are not ideal? >> well, that's just it. i mean, they had this policy in

place, and now they realize they can't handle it. well, when you create this situation where you're willing to accept, people are going to come and people are going to send folks there. and so that is what has happened, and now they're overwhelmed. they're spending upwards of $4 billion of taxpayer money including $1 billion from new york state to handle this crises. the governor and the mayor have been an absolute disaster. they've failed to coordinate and communicate with local officials outside of the city. and it has created a calamity across the board. will: i want to is ask you about your seat. former democratic rep month dare jones is set to launch a comeback bid for congress, and he's looking to go up against a democratic primary opponent who would eventually end up the winner of which facing you. once brooklyn, now back to manchester. the campaign says i've never been washington's choice because i stand up to corruption, i

america, that speaks for itself. how he has -- he's so well loved in florida florida for what he's done there, it speaks for itself. notice how they're cheap shots to him as a person. it's not cheap shots to his policies or what he plans to do in office. it's personal attacks, and this is something i've experienced in my position, what i've been fighting for. when they have nothing else against you, they will allow labels your way -- throe labels your way, they will call you names that aren't through. carley: you know, riley, i think a lot of the gop candidates agree on the issue of biolodge ca call men in women's sports, so what is it specifically about ron desantis that made you support him enough to want to become a campaign surrogate? >> what it was for me, and i remember in particular after our ncaa championships in march of 2022 in the 500 freestyle, this

is where leah thomas, biological man, won the national title on the 500 free. the run runner-up, her name is -- [inaudible] and she's from sarasota, florida. governor desantis honored her i think during an appeal as the national champion in the state of florida, and i thought that was so powerful. he was really the first person with political power to send a message that we are not having this. this is a violation to women and our rights to privacy and safety and fairness in our sorts. in our sports. and since then, of course, as he's continued on, florida's one of the first states that passed the fairness in women's sports bill with him being an integral part in that. how he's handled the issues that americans and moms care about, that's how he garon garner -- garnered my support. carley: riley, thank you so much for joining us. coming up, it's rabbit

trying to ignore the ongoing investigation over the cocaine found in the white house. finish. pete: but who could have done it, and will we ever find out? let's go off the wall to learn more. so let's start, will, with the timeline because on sunday, if you were watching tv, it was a pretty dramatic headline, substance found at the white house. what is it, nobody knew at the moment. that's sunday. will: on sunday night turned out that substance was cocaine. at the same time, everyone has made a big point -- most notably karine jean-pierre, white house spokesperson -- that the bidens weren't at the white house. they were at camp david. when the cocaine was found. in fact, they were at camp david, she suggests, on sunday, on saturday and on friday. which pete brings up two interesting notes. one, it doesn't matter where they were when the cocaine was found, it matters where they were when the cocaine was lost. pete: yes. will: and then the question is, are you telling me the truth? because i think they were there on friday. pete: and do we know how long

the cocaine was there? we haven't been told there. of course, they were there on friday, they left together on friday evening, so they're already hedging, and they haven't definitively said, no, it's not hunter's, no, t not joe's. then on wednesday the lab tests came back, and it tested positive for cocaine which is when all the other questions swirled up. will: you know what's interesting about it coming back as cocaine? as this sits right now in the realm obviously unsolved mysteries, if it had come back as anthrax the, would we have big questions? no, i think we'd know. pete: we would know, and there would be -- the secret service has said we're going to wrap this investigation up on monday. if you really want to know, you don't set an end to your investigation unless they do know who it is. will: but they said they don't over and over, except they don't answer the questions directly. they've been asked does the cocaine belong to the bidens? pete: no, it does not, it would violate the hatch act -- will: run off camera quickly.
