hearing on capitol hill. fbi director christopher wray on defense over the agency's alleged preferential treatment of democrats. senior, national correspondent kevin corke joins us here in the nation's capitol. good evening, kevin. >> kevin: you could call it a bipartisan be down today. hobbled and pilloried by the right and left for that matter at that hearing today on capitol hill. while his opening statement offered a forceful defense of the bureau, house members wasted little time in taking aim at the director for what they called corruption. and historically poor lead leadership. >> you preside over the fbi that has the lowest level of trust in the npr's history. people trusted the fbi more when j. edgar hoover was running the place then you are. you don't give straight answers. you give answers that later in court are deemed not true.

>> kevin: wray fired back saying his agency remains popular. expect in your home state of florida, the number of people trying to come work for us and devote their lives working for us is over 100%. >> we are deeply proud of them and they deserve better than you. >> kevin: so is the fbi protecting the bidens? that was one of the many questions. and also where the feds in on the january 6 protest? were they there at the capitol or not and why did the fbi allegedly target, catholics and demanding answers about the disparate ways the bureau appears to be happening the trim document trauma over at mar-a-lago and how they are handling joe biden's. >> and in my experience, ballrooms, bathrooms and bedrooms. >> how about a box in -- >> mr. chairman -- is back in the biden center.

>> kevin: and he was not present at the time. the fbi had a statement tonight that said the fbi has never been in the business of investment -- investigating or policing speech at school board meetings or anywhere else and would never will be. our focus is and always will be on protecting people from violence and threats of violence. obviously he was questioned about the school board meetings and other topics. by the way, wray existed that he is committed to establishing procedures and safeguards to ensure that the agency is doing "the right thing in the right way." skepticism and charges of bias continue unabated, mike. >> mike: kevin corke, thanks. let's bring in one of the house judiciary committee members who questioned director wray, texas republic congressman lance gooden. welcome. >> congressman gooden: great to be here. >> he said that the notion that he is biased is insane.

let's play it. >> first off, i would disagree with your characterization of the fbi and their description of my own approach. the idea that i'm biased against conservatives seems somewhat insane to me given my own personal background. >> mike: what are your key takeaways from today's hearing? >> congressman gooden: after today's hearing, i have a lot of the same concerns i had. i saw a lot of deflection of the things i can't answer that question. he will not come out and say i won't answer that question but there were a lot of excuses for why he was not going to give us the information we asked for. he does have a conservative background as the democrats love to play out. he was appointed by president trump. but there's occlude bias within the organization. if he does not think that he himself is biased, maybe he is not. but under his watch, certainly there is quite a bit of bias that we have discovered with this fbi and a lot of the questions that we had today we just did not get great answers. >> mike: one of your college try to impress him on whether he is

investigating president biden. let's play it. >> so the president is under investigation. >> i'm not going to confirm or speak to who is or is not under investigation for what. >> so he is not under investigation? >> i did not say that either. long-standing department policy and practice, i'm not going to be confirming or denying who is or is not under investigation. >> mike: what did you think of that? >> congressman gooden: he was very consistent in his denials to provide information. everyone knows that the president's son is under investigation. the information that the fbi has put out that we have seen in the press that is publicly available, it is very clear that he is in legal trouble. but what we saw today was just more deflection, democrats were obsessed with donald trump. every time a democrat was on the microphone, with very few exceptions, they were wanting to talk about the president and one of the issues that there was

agreement there, was the visor of use that we have seen. democrats that are joining with us on the republican side asking very serious questions, you know, fisa up for reauthorization. the fbi wants a clean reauthorization. you're not going to get it and the abuses that we have seen that director wray seem to disagree with the numbers, matt gaetz from florida talked about the numbers of abuses he seemed to be unaware of how many times the fisa process has been abused by the fbi. there are just so many problems that are not trending in the direction of the fbi being a credible institution. >> mike: they issued a warning about attacks on the fbi and director wray. let's play that. >> the personal attacks of director wray, repeated calls to "defund the fbi." these are not victimless acts. your clarion call to antigovernment extremists and that call is being heard. >> mike: how do you respond? >> congressman gooden: this is

the same jerry nadler that was attacking comey during the clinton race when he did not like what kobe did talking about her being under investigation. so i don't take much seriousness in anything jerry nadler says. his comments are all read and prepared by his staff. he is obsessed with president trump. every time he gets on the microphone, it is a trap, trump, trump, trump, trouble. i respect those that want to talk about the issues but i think that the personal attacks against anyone whether you are appointed or elected or never appropriate and there are some agreement that we had on the committee. at the end of day today, the american people do not have faith in the fbi. director wray to share some of the responsibility at the leadership of that fbi unfortunately does not have the trust of the american people. >> mike: congressman, grateful for your time, sir. >> congressman gooden: thanks for having me. >> mike: president biden met with ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy. they talked about joining nato

allies in the future. matt finn joins us now with the full story. hello, matt. >> matt: villamayor zelenskyy shares a similar name to vladimir putin. they are different names and very different meanings and today president biden accidentally called the ukrainian president standing right next to him vladimir. >> president biden: vladimir and i -- i should not be so fam familiar. >> matt: the president corrected himself and referred to him as mr. lou -- mr. zelenskyy. the president was speaking during a crucial nato -- nato summit. the president zelenskyy is explicitly expressing his dissatisfaction that his country is being denied nato membership calling it absurd that neither a timeframe nor invitation is being offered to ukraine. in an interview earlier this week, president biden said that he does not support ukraine joining nato during its present war with russia and noted

president biden's speech to the nato summit and i will get you to react to it. >> president biden: it is not a day or a year. it is the calling of our lifetime, of all time. where the struggle ahead, our unity will not falter. i promise you. >> mike: how do you assess president biden's performance? >> rebeccah: i can see why zelenskyy would be frustrated. this is the defense of freedom itself and on the other hand, he has been very, very slow in delivering the kinds of weapons that zelenskyy has as for that are necessary to help ukraine actually pushed russia out of ukraine and so really president biden wants to have it both ways. he wants to say we are going to help ukraine as long as it takes. he does not define what it takes is. he is no longer using terms like victory like the brits are and so, you know, eight -- there were lots of good things that came out of the nato summit but president biden himself did not have a very good trip.

>> : made president -- reference to president zelenskyy. sounded upbeat. >> the outcome of the nato summit very much needed and meaningful success for ukraine and i'm grateful to all leaders in nato for very practical and the support. >> how important was this nato summit for ukraine. control of very important for ukraine and you see him expressing great gratitude. he was frustrated and you can kind of see why he would -- he needs to express gratitude for all the eighth he has received about being frustrated that he has not received for instance the cluster munitions that are just now going to be released from the united states. those are something that he has wanted for a long time, something that congressional republicans have been pressuring joe biden for. he also has to strike a gratitude, the tone of gratitude because he is receiving quite a bit of eight and we don't want a long war of attrition obviously

zielinski does not want it. he wants ukraine to prepare. >> mike: russians are understandably not happy with the g7 supporting ukraine, saying "we consider this extremely ill judge and potentially very dangerous by providing security guarantees to ukraine. they are infringing on russia's security." no surprise there. >> rebeccah: here we are now 18 months or so after russia's full-scale invasion of ukraine and nato is stronger. and weak nato has always been a lived -- a liability for the american people because it guarantees we provide. we have finland and with turkey now agreeing to the ascension of sweden. we got an arctic air force that is going to be coming online that is going to be great for the arctic region and also for the security of the baltic sea. and so clearly nato is getting stronger security guarantees to ukraine even though ukraine is not going to be a member of nato. it is going to be a formidable military providing great

security benefits to the entire region. that is to the detriment of russian. but that was a decision that was made. >> jonathan: to have the. republicans are attracting what they call wokeness in the military. number of proposals are being considered from restricting access to abortion funding to canceling diversity and in, and program. here is corresponded -- >> that is why conservatives believe the battlefield may be inside the pentagon. >> my amendment would ban critical race theory. >> reporter: republicans want to give wokeness a dishonorable discharge. >> a military that is focused on blowing things up and killing people, not on social engineering wrapped in a uni uniform. >> reporter: conservatives want to prohibit service members to pay for transgender treatments,

>> reporter: two terrifying moments. yeah, remarkably similar. the first one in washington, dc. a suspect posing as an uber eats driver trick space using a gun. his four-year-old son watched from a table. they ended up in a wrestling match and the gun slid away from them. the footage than shows the yablonski's boy climbed onto his dad. and dc police apprehended that suspect when he left the building. he does has accepted a plea deal and is back on the streets. the owner of the petite four restaurant stopped two suspects. one of them armed from rubbing one of his customers. he was able to take the gun away and both suspects fled empty-handed. mike. >> mike: aaron rafferty, thanks very much. law enforcement officials in southern california are using a new tool to fight crime. unmanned aerial vehicles also

known as drones. that everyone is comfortable with the move. correspondent bill melugin in santa monica tells us why. >> reporter: santa monica police are deploying a new eye in the sky to respond to 911 calls. drones. they can get to scenes faster than a patrol car. as quickly as 30 seconds. the police have been using the drones to respond to 15 to 20 calls per day and they say the technology is a game changer. >> they are getting real-time information and allowing them to go in and deal with the situation and it is a huge advantage for them. relieving their stress, giving them that situational awareness that you cannot possibly have without this type of technology in plain. >> bill: their operators can see what is happening in real time and relay that information to responding officers. >> take a look at fifth and broadway for a subject. >> bill: here are real-world incidents. teenagers were holding what looked like handguns but the drug was able to see they were actually bb guns.

this man was seen in shooting what turned out to be an air rifle and it is call about a potential man with a gun, the drone was able to say it was only a lighter. the drone use does come with privacy concerns. santa monica pd says there are only used for 911 calls and they do not record over private homes or anywhere where there's a reasonable expectation of privacy. legal experts to fox their use should have limits. >> what kind of privacy invasion do you have? are they using night vision capabilities on them? and then they should be very clear and they should have -- have it documented exactly what justifies the use of the drone. >> bill: police departments to have to have to have a special waiver if they want to fly these drones passed an operator's line of sight. only about a dozen departments across the country have that authorization to. more are expected to get approval in the future. mike? >> mike: rebelution, thanks a lot, map, a white, wild ones los

risk. it is summer. is hot. 20 million, carl? >> carl: this is not just wasteful spending. this is fear porn. during covid-19, we saw that they were able to use taxpayer money not just to talk about covid. that was the smoke screen. they use covid money to fund left-wing political groups and so mike, if you look at the details on the program, who are they finding? they are funding community organizing groups at the local level, democrat groups, left-wing groups, to campus door to door to talk about climate change and this is an off year. there's no election, and so there's a lot of out of work democrat and consultants who also get some commission on the ads that will be run to tell people what they already know during july and august in california, it may get a little hot.

>> congresswoman mainor: and those, the democratic bill in california that would mandate judges to consider race when sentencing criminals. the proposed new section of the penal code says "it is the intent of the legislature to rectify the racial bias that has historically permeated our criminal justice system as documented by the california task force to study and develop reparation proposals for african americans." what about considering race at sentencing. >> carl: well, not only is this racist in and of itself to try to suggest that judges should take skin tone, someone's race into account in giving different sentences. oh, sorry, you have the wrong skin color. we are going to go hard on you. you have the right to selected skin color, we're going to give you a break. it is illegal. it is unconstitutional. it does not follow the constitution equal protection clause. but it is a windowdressing. it will lead to lighter sentences on criminals and that is what has been the intent, mike, along.
