officers got to the scene, they found her car and her cell phone but there was no sign of the 25-year-old or that young toddler. that she reported seeing walking alongside the highway for investigator now asking people to report any information they may have on the baffling case. senior correspondent jonathan is here with the very latest. >> hi eric and arthel the missing woman's parents are relying on their faith and help from the community to bring their daughter back safely. they are grateful for the outpouring of support they are receiving, take a listen. >> we have people, we do not know who are just reaching out to us with resources, with prayers, with information. we just thank you so much. and let it continue please request thursday night 25-year-old carly russell called 911 and inform the emergency dispatcher she had stopped to check on a toddler she had seen walking along the side of interstate 459.

she then called a family member, told this family member or a similar story for the family member heard carly ask the child if they were okay and then heard carly scream. police responding to the number one call found carly's cell phone which investigators are now analyzing for evidence along with video from highway traffic cameras as well as tips from the community. >> a single witness has reported possibly seeing a gray vehicle with a light complected mail standing outside of carly's vehicle but we have no further information on that individual or the vehicle at this time paragraphs carly's disappearance as shocked residents of hoover, alabama and upscale suburb just outside of birmingham. yesterday carly's neighbors organize a prayer vigil. >> our daughter just graduated from nursing school and travels down 459 all of the time. we know she would, in a heartbeat, stop if she saw a toddler walking along the road.

2010 and 2011. he is also a prime suspect in a fourth case. cb cotton is alive in new york with more. what more can you tell us? x hello arthel at some point rex sherman was confident he would never be caught. reportedly it made taunting phone calls to family members of one of the victims shortly after she was first reported missing. prosecutors say that confidence turned to concern as the years went by and they had to keep their investigation really tightlipped in order to keep information to offer now is officially charged in this case, his attorney is maintaining his innocence and colic this case very circumstantial. for prosecutors told fox and friends this morning, their cases buttoned up. >> i think if you look at all of the evidence and how it comes together i th think is very sol. it starts with the defendant's

activities. it is underpinned by the dna that is attached to the victims. >> he was arrested thursday night not far from his manhattan office from friday pleaded not guilty to charges in the killings of three women. 22-year-old megan waterman, 24-year-old melissa and 27-year-old amber lynn costello. he was also the fourth -- as a suspect in a fourth murder according to prosecutors and police say they are looking for more evidence that could link him to work killings. the murders have been unsolved murders mistreat for years at least 11 sets of remains were found within a quarter-mile stretch of the beach between 2010 and 2011. investigators say back in january of this year his dna was collected on pizza crust linking him to the murders but prosecutors say he was also linked to the killings bite burner front allegedly used to arrange meetings with some of the victims they were selling us this case has haunted them for years.

to follow the guy, wait for him to throw out something a pizza box which they apparently were able to match the dna from. what you think of this police work? >> outstanding police work. this guy it was the bore boy next door shall we say he went to high school there on long island, graduated, went to college there became an architect, set up a business and the manhattan port of new york. just a pillar of the community supposedly. what happened is about a year ago the d.a. rank tierney of the so-called county d.a. decided to reopen this cold case from 2011 time. and after he reopened it they were able to focus in on this guy rex heuermann. they were able to follow him. they were able to show he had

gotten burner phones and he had the audacity to call one of the victims sister and talked her about the death of her sister. there is overwhelming evidence for this guy, erica. i have got to take excellent excellent police work. eric: what surprises you the most? what i look at this they have video of him walking into phone stores the police say buying a burner phone. people would think you buy a burner phone they can't trace it or find it out but that's not true at all they can and they backtracked apparently all of his actions. >> you know you're absolutely right. not only did they have the burner phone, but they had some of the women were tied up. they found tape from there it they found heuermann's wife dna

at one of the tapes they found his body here on one of the victims. they have his truck. there are witnesses who said a person fitting his description was driving a chevy truck that he has. the authorities have overwhelming evidence. very surprising. eric: what do the police have to do can you bring us inside the set the investigation they have someone who is a sub suspect they have a dna as you said the hair from one of the victims. how did they do? how did they steak them out and get the dna sample from someone? apparently they got dna from his wife from bottle she had thrown out. you can tell the municipal garbage collectors were going to be at the end of the block you can stop the garbage truck on say we have a subpoena were going to get the bottles. that is amazing work you got to follow them and stick them out all of this time. >> patients.

what law enforcement officers had to do is be patient. over a period of over a year they followed this man. they saw it he was doing. he was contacting workers during the time. of this year they were following and surveilling him. and when he bit into that pizza and th through part of it away y were able to use that dna from that pizza to tie him to at least three of these four murders that took place there in long island. eric: he pled not guilty as cb cotton reported, we will find out more in august in his next court hearing. meanwhile the baffling case out of birmingham over carly russell 25 year old woman tells police, nine when there's a toddler in the highway. she stops and her family hears her screaming and she is gone. the car is still there but no phone. what do you make of that case?

>> this is so bizarre and such a mystery. if we go back and think about it was around 9:30 p.m. at night that carly russell called 911 and said that she saw a toddler walking along this busy highway. she stopped. the big question in my mind is for other people in that same vicinity, did they also stop? apparently not. that is the first question. so what they are having to do now is after she stopped and called 911 it is my understanding she also called a relative. so law enforcement officers are going to have to work backwards. they are going to have to check that vehicle. but they also are going to have to find out and know more about carly russell herself. this is such a bizarre thing. the child was not found. they did in fact find her car.

they have the cell phone. this is a very, very bizarre case they are working but they're going to have to work backwards from that vehicle. from that crime scene if it is a crime scene to try to determine what has happened with carly russell. but they need to know more about ms. russell and her mental and physical makeup. >> i imagine as you just said if it's a crime scene they're looking to see if anybody else had any calls about a toddler but maybe perhaps they're looking into the investigation maybe there wasn't one. or was she targeted question marcus someone have a toddler out there on the street was the toddler used as bait? >> you are absolute right. but i want you to think about it. at 9:30 p.m. at night it is completely dark out there in the section of the highway. they would not perhaps have targeted her. maybe they were targeting someone that would come alone. but the perpetrator or

whatever people are calling if there is real uncertainty about how russia is executing the war and that sort of a lack of confidence or doubts about putin exit easier to be cooperative and supportive. but in the end this is a good moment for nato. i hear from network two years from now or whatever it's going to be, what happens on the battlefield will largely determine how this goes for it how much confidence the members of nato have in supporting an ongoing war. an fortunes can change they can go up and down. the counteroffensive for ukraine is very difficult right now but obviously russia has problems i think that's helped keep the members unified. arthel: russia has problems but do you think this a promissory note if you will for ukraine to join nato will fuel putin to sit listen i've got to pull out all the stops now and do whatever i can to wipe out ukraine so they

cannot be around to join nato. >> one that is an outstanding argument arthel. absolutely that's in the range of possibilities. so yes that is possible. there will be a counter argument that says putin is all in anyway. so, it is hard to know it's in the mind of putin. i was surprised he would make such a gigantic mistake back when he invaded ukraine so i do not know. who knows how he is going to react to it he is in some trouble i do not know what news he's getting from his military. but he should not be surprised on the other hand preview invadw invaded countries and guess what, they join with their friends and they banned up against you. that is a fundamental law of international politics. whether he can accept that reality or not i do not know so your question is a relevant one. quick speaking of politics you know there is a mixed reaction in washington, i wo liked your e on that.

it also give us your take on the idea of ukraine joining nato. >> i think right now there seems to be different views about ukraine. the majority view is we should support ukraine against a russian invasion i think that's mostly what people think. but there are strong counter views saying we should not be tied down in this on some adventure we should keep our eye on china or some other think this is a waste of time and pulling us in. there is that view for those folks they think our deepening commitment to nato is moving in the wrong direction. and there are other folks who feel the opposite point of view and say look, the president is not doing and if he should've been faster. he should have given more stuff sooner. so it is not well-settled particularly in the republican party or another different

policy makers and officeholders taking different points of view. now, my own opinion i've got to say the idea of ukraine joining nato i never thought that was a great idea. obviously the invasion has changed things. now ukraine is angry at russia that is not going away. you do not want to have ongoing war in europe again and again and again so i think we are in a different space. but i would say i don't want to take a hard position. arthel, are we not constantly surprised by what happens in this war? every week there is something strange or unexpected so it will take time we will see what it looks like then. i don't think it's going to happen very fast but i do think it is a complex and difficult thing. arthel: i understand you not one to take a firm stand either way

participating in the first debate but it is pretty clear there is still a massive desire from voters for his candidacy so i guess we will see moving forward whether chris christie, ron desantis, nikki haley whether any of these guys can come close to where they're at. sue for what the former president skips the debate what will he do? >> i think it's likely he does skip the debate. to be honest he does not need to participate he has the name recognition pretty has the money. putting himself on that debate stage would open himself up to it attacks by the likes of desantis, chris christie will make it a lot easier for this canister go after him in a way he just might want to avoid right now. eric: would that diminish the debate if he was not there were others to be attacking him and the former president would not be there, on the other hand to bring out something the critics can say he is trying to avoid and heighten the criticism. >> absolutely. to be doing voters a disservice by not participating in this

debate. if he wants them to elect him as president of the nine states against the lease that he can do is put himself out there and get some answers as to what he deserves to be elected again. that is a basic requirement all of these other candidates have agreed to participate in. he should participate in the debate i hope he does but he might decide it's just not what he is interested in it right now this point. eric: in terms of the other candidates as you see in assess each one, do you think could most benefit from being on the debate stage? >> the obvious answer is ron desantis it'll be great to see desantis who is seen as the runner up in the gop primary right now be able to go face-to-face with donald trump and taken on directly. a lot of voters want to know whether desantis could take on trump it has been a hypothetical expectation that he is the only guy who could. but we have not seen the to go toe to toe yet. he would greatly benefit from it

as well but chris christie went to he is really sharpies take on trump before. i kind of almost one of chris christie's only goal in entering the race is to take on trump not to actually get into the white house itself. i think that is a service he is hoping to perform but to guess e will see what happens. stu varney who would say is running to into think that will gain any traction with these attacks? >> who knows. think a lot of these candidates entering the race do not expect to win the presidency but i think nikki haley is a great example of this as well maybe they're running for cabinet positions, maybe they're running for vice president siva course are not going to admit as much i don't think there is actually a realistic path for them to the white house. eric: and for those who do want to become present we are seeing a change in the republican party some supporting early voting after all those attacks what is going on behind that do they seek success and the democrats and say we should be doing that to? >> are certainly a sense republicans do need to adapt to

the current voting landscape virginia governor glenn youngkin governor glenn young isa great e supply were encouraging early voters and he is spending millions of dollars for this program in order to get it out there. his entire argument as we can argue against mail and voting we can argue against absentee voting we can say expansions that happen during covid were not for the best. the fact is they are here wouldr take advantage of them and take them to the success or the but let the democrats walk all of us again. it's a good strategy and help other publican leaders mimic it in other states. here's a president trump tweeted in 2020 i listen for what he says he said get rid of ballot harvesting is rampant with fraud the u.s. must have voter id the only way to get an honest counts and here he is attacking universal mailing.

senior correspondent jonathan seri is what life it is lancet with the very latest what more can you tell us? >> still a very active investigation. police are investigating what they are describing as an active shooter incident in hampton, georgia. this is a very small town of about 8000 residents it is located in henry county about 3. authorities say the shooting began around 10:45 a.m. this morning and dog dogwood lakes ia residential community in the town of hampton. local tv station wsb is reporting at least four people are dead we have not independently confirm that with authorities who described the investigation as active and ongoing. police say the suspect is still at large. and until they catch this person they are urging the public to avoid the area. again dogwood lake subdivision
