pete: we begin this 9:00 a.m. eastern hour, with a fox business alert. brand-new polls, coming out moments ago, highlighting the state of the gop field in the important states of iowa and south carolina. donald trump in the lead at 46%, a commanding lead, amongst gop caucus growers in iowa, 30 points ahead of ron desantis in second place. rachel: south carolina, nearly half of voters support trump,
6:01 am
48%, a huge lead over nikki haley in second at just 14%. ron desantis is a close third at 13%. south carolina senator tim scott is in fourth place at 10%. joey: as gop hopefuls gear up for next month's debate stage, donald trump hasn't committed to joining them, and 59% of iowa gop caucus voters say that shows weakness and nearly the same amount of south carolina gop voters agree. so you see that there. i don't know -- it will be interesting to see how much it matters, if he's in the debate or not. i think it may help clear the field of who is left but i don't know that it will hurt him. pete: these polls reinforce the argument that donald trump is making right now, if i have nearly half of -- 46 to 48% in south carolina and iowa, considering the prominent south carolina senators that are there
6:02 am
and considering the amount of time other candidates are spending in iowa, he has a commanding lead, half the republican party in both of these key states. so why submit yourself to being the target of all the incoming when all of these voters know you. what do the voters need to hear from donald trump that they haven't heard before. what debate is going to change your view of donald trump many it's all upside for the other candidates, not a lot of upside for donald trump. he may do it, he may not. we would love to see him debate. i can understand where he's coming from. joey: when he was president, i think it -- listen, there's a difference between strategy, good strategy, and maybe what i would prefer -- i would love to hear more of donald trump. i would love to see more of donald trump on these issues, a debate is the place it happens, not necessarily him junction a juxtaposedto other candidates bd like to hear where he is on issues we discuss every day. rachel: if you have a strategist on the trump team,
6:03 am
that strategist would have the same thought you have, why would you do this. the question is, does it make him look weak to not do it. pete: do people really -- rachel: i think devil's advocate, i get it. pete: they try to use the term, make him -- bait him into doing it. that's not a word people associate with -- rachel: 100%. also, he does so well. joey: that's the thing. rachel: could he improve his numbers or is there too much risk? joey: if i'm ron desantis, i'm happy. rachel: come on. pete: depends what donald trump wants to do. do you think there's a strategist looking at donald trump saying you know what, you should do this? he has never listened to strategist or pollster. he's going to make a gut call based on what works for him and who is someone to quibble with someone who won the republican nomination in 2016 and 2020. he's ahead in 2024. they can give him all the advice

they want. this is a guy who has won time and time again, especially in the republican primaries of. showed up in the debates in 2016 in epic fashion cutting against the grain. rachel: i kind of miss those days. pete: i'm not saying it wouldn't be fun. joey: as a voter, take my job out of this, take my preferences out of this, as a voter who is concerned that woke politics the is much different today than it was in 2016, that what biden has done to our country is a different place where even obama left it, i would love to hear him challenged on these things and see his answer. his answers in 2015, nobody was expecting those answers, it changed the way people thought about politics, changed how people understood priorities. i think that's a part of this and i don't want to wait until the general election to do it. pete: you want to see it as a voter. i want to see it as a viewer. i want to sit back, pop some popcorn. joey: ted cruz that way, there
6:05 am
are folks on this debate stage that are newer to that setting. pete: let's bring in david asman, a fox business anchor. you had a chance to look at the fox business polls. what are your take aways. >> the biggest take away is economics is what's driving people's success or lack of success. 51% of the people in iowa say it's the top issue that they're dealing with. i was surprised. 41% still plurality of voters in south carolina that think it's the number one issue but again, it's clear that this election is going to be focused more on the economy than anything else despite the attempt of biden to claim thaclaim that bidenomics s working. the key is inflation, let's be clear. inflation outpaced wages, no matter how the president tries to spin it. it's true, inflation is coming
6:06 am
down from its height. it's still twice what it was when he came into office and it's what's bothering americans most. and of course it affects other things like the stock market, which is up single digits even though inflation is up 16% since biden took over. so your savings, your 401-ks are down. of course, when interest rates went up in order to deal with inflation, that affected your ability to get a loan. it also affected all those people that have credit card debt, there's a trillion dollars in credit card debt out there now because of americans trying to make up for what they were losing because of inflation. so they were maxing out on their credit card. that's a big problem and they're paying more for it as interest rates go up and of course car loans are way up too. people are paying 750 to $1,000 a month in payments on car loans and of course there's mortgage rates up to 7% level now for a 30-year mortgage rate so it's the economy, stupid. i mean, not that anybody on that
6:07 am
bench is stupid but that's the old phrase and it's as true now as when jim carvel said it 20 years ago. joey: foreign policy and defense, it comes down low on the polls. when we look at foreign policy and defense, is it low because it wraps back into economic issues, that people see the money we spent on ukraine as an economic issue more than a defense issue? >> foreign policy has the tendency to peak and ebb very dramatically depending on the issue in front of you. after the awful afghanistan withdrawal it would be higher in concerns of voters. economic issues are a steady straight line, more than any other issue. same is true for a lot of social issues but really foreign policy depends on what crisis we're dealing with at the moment. right now, it's kind of like the
6:08 am
crisis level is not at a fever pitch on any particular issue so i think that explains that issue. pete: i'm going to rope you in real quick to the debate we were having on the couch. does a poll like this showing such a commanding lead for donald trump in key states for primary voters does it make him horror less likely to be involved in the first debate. >> i think it makes him a little more likely to be involved in the debate. i know with your popcorn desire, his presence there, but the interesting thing was nikki haley coming in number -- at the number two spot over desantis in south carolina. i know she's a home girl there because she was governor but tim scott is -- i believe tim scott is number three or number four after desantis. but the fact that she came in strongly should be a concern to a lot of people in the trump camp. again, it is her home state, one
6:09 am
would expect that. tim scott showed well in iowa by the way. so people in the second tier after trump and desantis are beginning to make very strong movements in certain areas and if they continue to show strong movement, i think it will put a little fire behind trump to get involved in the debates but if keeps that 45 to 50% lead that he's been having in most of these states, i have a feeling he's going to stay out of it but that's just my feeling. rachel: if he doesn't show up to the debate i don't know who is going to watch the debate. i mean, he's sort of the big draw. so that's a problem for them if he doesn't show up just in terms of eye balls. i want to move to another topic with you, david, which are gas stoves. as you know, have been attacked. i think this is a war on modern life, war on family. now they're moving now to water heaters and everything else. this cannot be popular with the
6:10 am
american people. why do they continue to do this? >> well, because they're zell zs that are convinced no matter what people think that they're saving the world and that's why they do it. the point is, we have two ways of making inflation higher. one is just to spend more money which the government has been doing in gobs since biden became president. but also in regulation. so a good part of the reason why inflation is high is because regulation is high. think of the first thing that biden did when he took office was to kill that pipeline, the keystone pipeline. that was a regulatory move and that caused inflation to go up. so it hits on two levels. one on the personal level when you're forced to change your personal habits whether it's stoves or air conditioners, all the other things they're trying to kill for everybody except them, by the way. you don't think president obama has air conditioning in his
6:11 am
palatial martha's vineyard place or john kerry doesn't have air conditioning when he flies in his wife's private jet? come on, the hypocrisy of the whole thing is another part. when you add on the inflationary cost to the personal cost to individuals, i think that's a terrible mistake coming into an election so either they're totally blind or i'm totally blind but you look at the polls and the polls show that people do care about their own personal lives and how these regulations are affecting their lives and they don't like it. they also make the connection now with inflation that the more regulations you have, the more inflation you have. there's an inflationary aspect to regulations that is hurting people as well and they put it all together. they're much smarter than what those harvard graduates think they are from their regulatory perches. rachel: that's a good point. pete: david asman, thanks for
6:12 am
breaking down the polls and everything else. >> great to see you. rachel: always great seeing you, david. joey: tell that recently retired marine we said hello. his son is a marine. pete: big supporter of the marine corpses. a big winner on the poll is tim scott, at 10, 11%, clearly in what is becoming sort of a more crowded second tier, kind of was desantis by himself. you've got nikki haley at 14 in south carolina. that's a stand alone. she's only at 5 in iowa. but it's tim scott who has the double digit numbers in both of those states. ramaswamy at 6 and 3%. it looks like a trump up here and then desantis, tim scott sort of coupling right now. we've heard that in the news, some voters, some donors saying if desantis' campaign flown camn deered, maybe tim scott is where he goes.
6:13 am
rachel: donald trump being nicer to tim scott more than ron desantis if you noticed that on the trail. pete: and tim scott being nicer to donald trump. rachel: how many are running for vice president? joey: if donald trump comes to -- the reason why i want to see donald trump come to the debate, i want to see who of them takes the leap to actually attack donald trump. who starts to try to show that there's a difference between them and donald trump. like so many of these candidates are embracing donald trump's platform and basically saying well, i'm just a better vessel for it and i don't think that resonates. somebody's going to have to change the script if they want to challenge him but where do you go from there? pete: no one figured out that tap dance. rachel: i would love to see a poll on how many of the people who are supporting donald trump, how much of it is like based on the kitchen table issues that david asman voted on. pete: a lot of gut there. rachel: how much is a revenge vote. pete: that's what i mean with the gut. rachel: there's a lot of revenge vote in there.
6:14 am
joey: the biggest concern with trump that i hear people talk about, love him, love his policies, love his presidency. if he becomes president again will it be donald trump working for the american people or working to get back at those who attacked him and is that the same thing. pete: i think a lot of people feel that's the same thing, a lot of voters out there. if he's getting back what was done to him, a lot of the reasons they're doing it to him because they're advocating for things people care about. i think we spent a lot of time worrying about the difference. i think there's a lot of similarity in that difference. joey: nascar, the leader gets out front, the second, third place, if they race each other, the leader gets further out front. that's what's happening here. as desantis is now scrapping with nikki haley and tim scott. that really just sets donald trump on his own trajectory. rachel: all right. we're going to turn now to your headlines. at least four people are missing including two children as nova novascotia reels from what somee
