last year, wal-mart launched an innovative new career program which offered store associates the chance to become truck drivers as the retail giant faced a shortage of drivers. the new gig came with a serious pay bump, too, with drivers making up to $110,000 in their first year. for many employees, it has completely transformed their lives. like this next fella. marine veteran randall also known as reece niblet joins us right now. reece, good morning to you. >> good morning, sir. thank you for having me. >> steve: great to have you. so you've been at wal-mart for over 10 years and then you heard about this new program where you could essentially double your pay. did you think you were going to get accepted initially? >> i never thought i would be a truck driver. now that i am, i couldn't imagine myself doing anything else. >> steve: tell us a little bit about it and tell us about -- they've got a private fleet. wal-mart has their own trucks. 13,000 drivers. and because of the supply chain,

essentially they're growing their own at home. tell us a little bit about the process in learning how to drive. >> so i went through a 12-week associate to driver program with wal-mart certified driver trainers. these guys are the best of the best. they're like the top gun of truck drivers. we learned how to do everything the safe way which is the wal-mart way. it was absolutely amazing experience. they paid for everything. to get your c.d.l. permit to your c.d.l. testing in order to graduate the program, we had to do the exact same driving requirements that they do for their wal-mart driver hiring events for over-the-road guys. it's a top notch program, i would highly advise anyone that is a wal-mart associate to give it a go. >> steve: how much do you drive each day? >> so i'm a teams driver. i do a little over 600 miles and so does my co-driver.

we do about anywhere between 6200 to 6,500 miles on a six on, three off schedule. >> gotcha. we talked to somebody who is just learning how to be a driver. they've been driving a couple of months professionally. and they said before they got the job, and took the training they never in a million years thought about driving one of those great big scary trucks that you see out on the highway. tell us why it's not that scary when you're behind the wheel. >> i'm the night driver, so i get the bonus of not having to deal with a lot of traffic already. just like anything else, practice makes perfect and wal-mart instills the safety in you to give you all the tools that you need. so i think about things that they tell me all the time. you know, i'll be driving and if there's a turn that i'm questioning, i remember them -- i remember the advice and it's -- it just -- it's secondhand now at this point. >> steve: and the pay bump
