good morning. we are 13 miles away from the town of lahaina. next to a road block. seeing heart breaking scenes of folks come out. pleading with officers, wanting to be let in because they lost their friends and family members residents aren't going to be let in for some time now. this is still an active search and rescue scene. they are still trying to get people out, busing people out of the evacuation zone this as the death toll unfortunately continues to climb. 55 people at least confirmed dead at this time. several fires burning on the island of maui since tuesday. none of them yet fully contained by officials here. yet unknown how they started. most destructive on maui's west side ripped through the community of lahaina driven by fierce winds high pressure to the north and hurricane dora as it passed hundreds of miles to the south. according to hawaii's governor the fire destroyed more than 1,000 buildings in lahaina and destroyed the town's ban i don't know tree the peaceful island

them. >> it's true. remind us, how would i ever run out of a cell phone singal right in the middle of a town. this is that case. it makes us ask ourselves are we ready for a similar emergency? our s. our phone set up for that? if we are on our phone how would do we check where that is. >> important to get life settings on today. iphone emergency sos is what they used in hawaii it. works on iphone 8 and later. the emergency setup is make sure that you can call by pressing five times on the side or you hold the two side buttons of your phone and then after a few seconds, it will ask you if you want to make an emergency call. if you don't respond it will go and do that can't get through 911 text them. many people did that iphone 14 or later which this family of

two weeks ago. we go there every summer as a family. my brothers, sisters and extended family. extended family of people i'm not related to who i have known there for years and years. my mom is still there, yes. steve, there is no power in waste maui but she is safe. we have spoken to her. it's hard to get through. the cell service is down. it's really hard to relay how how isolated this paradise is. one highway in and out. if you cut off communication, you're really down to word of mouth. my mom and her husband are there. and they said they would go to the car. they have been going it the car and listening to the radio for updates. almost as though we thousands of miles away have more information two miles away from them than those so close a disaster. they are safe and the plan to evacuate them saturday, steve. >> steve: i have been reading that certain places in maui, around where your mom is in lahaina, grocery stores have nothing. restaurants, if they are still standing have nothing.

ains the cost of farmland rose over 7% this year. pricing many farmers out of the market, especially the new generation. and this comes as the u.s. deals with an aging farmer population, sparking worries over who will grow the nation's food supply in the future. joining us now is tennessee farmer and agriculture advocate stephanie nash. hey, stephanie. >> hey, thanks for having me. >> ainsley: you look great. tell us about your family. you are a fourth generation farmer; is that right? >> yes. i'm a fourth generation farmer. we moved out of california in 2013 and now we are here outside of nashville milking 1200 cow. >> ainsley: how does this effect you when you hear corn is growing up, so i beans growing up we produce 80 pierce of the world's so i beans. how is that going to effect you and your family?

>> well, just for the education of everyday americans, you know, we have lost 25% of farm land 1950. the cost to raise animals and livestock has gone up 28%. and, you know, we are seeing 2,000 acres a day being taken up by urban development, by residential areas. and it's really scary to see how much land we are taking away from our family farmers and ranchers. i believe if we do not stop this dangerous trend that we're not going to have the land to supply the american people. >> ainsley: i mean, stephanie, how do you survive when the prices are going up and you say cost is going up 28% for your family to have a farm. >> it's really hard. we have to make tough decisions every day. we have to look at the economy of agriculture. we have to look at washington, d.c. and the policies that they are missing. i believe that the usda is weak right now. you talk about next generation farms and programs. there is no way that they are going to be able to afford 5,
